Macro invertebrate fauna of Rabindra Sarobar, a national lake in Kolkata was extensively studied for a period of one year. The macro invertebrate community comprised of 53 species belonging to 11 major groups. Gastropoda (61.6-73.8%), Oligochaeta (25.10-36.52%) and Bivalvia (0.72-1.60%) were the three most dominant groups with respect to number and percentage. Luxuriant growth of macrophytes and soft organically rich bottom favour the growth and propagation of molluscs as benthic community in this lake. The macro invertebrate species showed distinct seasonality in their population. Gastropod species like Bellamya bengalensis, Gabbia orcula, Gyraulus labiatus and Brotia costula were higher in post monsoon and winter seasons. Monsoon season exhibited surge in density of Thiara granifera and Thiara tuberculata. The density of Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri ranged between 726-2288/m² indicating an intermediate level of pollution of lake. The values of diversity indices ranged from 2.98 to 3.55, 2.01-2.55 and 0.54-0.70 for Shannon-Weiner index of diversity (H), Margalefs index of species richness (d) and Evenness index (e) respectively. From these values, it can be inferred that Rabindra Sarobar is moderately polluted with no obvious stress as the communities are stable with the available resources in the habitat of the lake.

Thirty-three strains of actinomycetes were isolated from the Gulf of Mannar based on standard microbiological techniques and the isolates were identified as Streptomycetes and Nocardia sp. However, a degree of variation in physico-chemical properties as well as in population was observed among the samples in different seasons. Highest population was observed during summer and lowest during monsoon season. All the isolates were screened for antibacterial activity against eight human pathogens by plate assay method. Two isolates belonging to group Streptomycetes showed antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens.

Zooplankton composition of 19 water bodies of Haveri studied in post and pre monsoon season of 2004-2005. A total of 71 species were recorded, 38 of them belonging to rotifera, 22 cladocera, seven copepoda and four ostracoda. Of these, five species i.e. one cladoceran and four rotiferans were reported for the first time from this area. A maximum of 29 species were recorded from Akkialur tank, and only five species were recorded from Makaravalli tank. Frequently recorded rotiferans were Keratella tropica, Habrotrocha bidens, Brachionus calyciflorus, B. diversicornis, Keratella cochlearis, Lecane luna, L. leonfina, Fillinia longiseta andF. opoliensis. Common Cladocerans were Diaphanosoma exicum, Ceriodaphnia cornuta, Moina micrura, M. macracopa. The regular copepods were Neodiaptomus strigilipes Heliodiaptomus viduus, Paracyclops fimbiatus, Tropocyclops prasinus and Mesocyclops leuckarti. Common ostracods were Hemicypris fossucula, llyocypris gibba and Darwinula sp. The species richness was high in pre-monsoon season compared to post-monsoon season. In Akkialur tank 15 species were found in postmonsoon season whereas 29 species were recorded in premonsoon season. Other tanks a/so showed the same trend.

Total of 12 taxa of odonata of nine Anisoptera and three Zygoptera were recorded during kharif 2000 in an irrigated rice field of Madurai. Among anisopterans, four species Pantala flavescens (Fabricus) Diplocodes trivialis (Rambur), Crocothemis servilia Drury and Tramea limbata (Desjardins) were dominant. Among zygopterans, Agriocnemis femina femina Brauer was the dominant species recorded in weeded and partially weeded ecosystems. The four species of dragonflies and one species of damselfly had comparatively more abundance in partially weeded rice ecosystem than in weeded rice ecosystem. Rare species like Orthetrum sabina (Drury), Rhyothemis variegata (Linnaeus), Neurothemis tullia (Drury), Anax guttatus (Burmeister) and Trithemis sp. with fewer individuals occurred only at the tillering stage of crop growth.

Five bryozoan species were encountered during a limnological investigation in Deeper wetland, a perennial water body situated between 91038'-91ø4O'E & 26ø6'-26) 8'N near Guwahati, the capital city of Assam. India. The identified species are Hislopia lacustris moniliformis, Hyalinella punctata, Pactinatella gelatinosa, Plumatella emarginata andFredericella sultana. Micro-structural features of the species are studied in limnological laboratory of Gauhati University. All the species are not reported earlier from this region. Some physical and chemical parameters of the wetland are also studied. As there is sporadic literature on ectoproctan species from this region, it is anticipated that the study will help in future research activities on this group of animals.

Microsporidium was isolated from larvae of Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) collected from Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu, India (10.22°N 78.00°E). This microsporidian is monomorphic, disporous, develops in direct contact with the cytoplasm of the host cell and the nuclear configuration of all stages is diplokaryotic. Infections produced are systemic with mature spores are being produced in midgut, nervous tissue, muscles, labial glands, gonads, tracheae, epidermis, malpighian tubules, and, most extensively in fat body tissues. The fresh spores are typically ovocylindrical in shape, with a mean size of 3.91 x 1.91 μm. Based on the light microscopic studies, this species has been assigned to the genus Nosema. Under laboratory conditions, this species is known to infect nine other lepidopteran hosts viz., Bombyx mori (L.), Chilo infuscatellus Sn, Earias vitella (F.), Spodoptera exigua (H.), Helicoverpa armigera (H.), Leucinodes orbonalis On., Pericallia ricini (Fab.), Plutella xylostella (L.), and Tricoplusia ni (Hb.). Laboratory bioassay with the first, second, and third instars of S. litura at different spore dosage resulted in a high mortality. Mortality was less for the fourth instar larvae but resulted in a high prevalence of infection among adults, indicating this species to be a potential biocontrol agent.

During 1999-2003 surveys were conducted in Hisar (Haryana) to know the occurrence of mesostigmatid mite fauna associated with stores. The mites identified under investigation belong to four families, six genera and seven species. The identified mites are Androlaelaps theseus (Zumpt), Haemolaelaps ovalis Costa, Hypoaspis aculeifer Canestrini and Hypoaspis sardoa Berlese from Laelapidae family, Ornithonyssus nitedulae Costa from Macronyssidae family, Phytoseius sp. from Phytoseiidae family and Leiodinychus parasiticus Choudhary and Mukherjee from Urodinychidae family. A key to the identification of mites has been provided in the text. L. parasiticus is the most destructive mite in stores and is responsible for bulk spoilage. Ornithonyssus nitedulae is essentially a blood feeding mite of rodents and birds that enter into stores and can be a health hazard to the workers in stores and godowns. Other mites observed are basically free living, feeding on harmful mites, fungus etc. in the stored environment. Out of the seven species identified, three are new report from India and six are first report from Haryana.

Four new species of phthiracarid mites, viz., Atropacarus (Hoplophorella) chaliyamensis, A. (H.) crenulus, A. (H.) reticulatus and A. (H.) calotropicus are reported from Kerala, India. This is the first report of this genus from southern India. A. (H.) chaliyamensis is characterised by the presence of two lateral carinae as a pair of stumps on the prodorsum which stop abruptly at the middle and the barbed nature of adanal seta ad?2. A. (H.) crenulus possesses an oval prodorsum with slightly pointed tip and an elongated sensillus with a round fan-shaped projection towards the tip with crenulation along its anterior margin. Exobothridial seta is absent while seta ad₂ is thin and smooth with pointed tip. In A. (H.) reticulatus lateral carina is well developed which bulges outwards towards the middle of prodorsum. Prodorsal integument shows a number of longitudinal striations which cross one over the other presenting a highly reticulated appearance. Rostral seta is thick, lamellar seta is elongated while notogastral setae are bare. In A. (H.) calotropicus, prodorsum is oblong with rounded rostral apex and without lateral carina. Prodorsum exhibit wrinkled ornamentation while notogaster is densely foveolate. Rostral seta is barbed while notogastral setae c₁, d₁, and e₁, appear foliate with uniform thickness.

The control fishes fed with pelleted feed recorded the highest growth rate followed by the fish muscles. The survival rate of the fishes was 100% as no mortality was observed during the experiment.

To minimize fertilizer use is one objective for sustainable development of aquaculture. Substrate-supported systems enhance food availability for some fish species thriving low in the food web. To promote organic farming and also in view of the paucity of information of periphyton production and its impact on growth performance of brackishwater species, the review indicates high growth performance of Mugil cephalus, Chanos chanos, Etroplus suratensis and Oreochromis niloticus were grown in ponds provided with substrate in comparison with controls (no feed no additional substrates) and feed ponds (only supplementary feeding, no additional substrates). Studies conducted by different workers also indicated that periphyton supported fish production technology offers considerable potential for aquaculture production enhancement. Installation of additional substrate for the growth of periphyton perhaps also ensure the complete utilization of the nutrients/nutrient pool released by the fertilizers, thus promoting organic farming without the use of costly feeds or any inorganic fertilizers. Therefore, this technology would prove to be eco-friendly and economically viable when applied on large scale.

Immediately after collection of semen, dilution was made (1:3) in BTS extender added with ascorbic acid as antioxidant and stored at 24°C and evaluated for Hypo-Osmotic sperm swelling (Hosst) for every stipulated hours viz. 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours. For Hampshire the values obtained were 55.33 ± 0.16, 50.11 ± 0.16, 44.11 ± 0.16 and 41.22 ± 0.16% at 0, 24, 48 and 72 hours respectively and that for crossbred were 52.45 ± 0.19, 46.95 ± 0.19, 40.01 ± 0.19 and 39.33 ± 0.19%. There was significance difference (p<60>0.05) up to 48 hours and between breed. However, within breed difference was not much prominence.

Knowledge of digestive physiology of fish larvae is the most crucial for the development of proper feeding strategies to fulfill their nutritional requirements. The yolk sac exhaustion, mouth opening and food consumption should be synchronized in such a way that the consumed food will be digested efficiently resulting higher survival and growth of larvae. Review focuses on the morpho-functional changes occurring in the digestive system of fish during ontogenic development. Mouth gape plays important role in larval feeding. Development and regulation of the digestive enzymes depend on the progressive changes in the digestive tract. This is either genetically programmed or induced by the corresponding substrate in the food. Protease and lipase activities show variations during the shifting phase of feeding. Trypsin and chymotrypsin play a major role among the serine proteases in the early development in all cyprinids, which lack a true stomach. The activity of these proteases is associated with pancreatic secretions. The pronounced amylase activity in some fish at the first feeding suggests the importance of carbohydrate metabolism in ontogeny of these species. Microorganisms play important role in digestion. The morpho-functional changes of digestive system during ontogenesis influence the gut evacuation rate. This information will be useful for the formulation of artificial feed for fish larvae.

A new species of Whip Spider (Phrynichidae: Amblypygi) is described from Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh, India. Phrynichus andhraensis sp. nov. is compared with the known Indian species Phrynichus phipsoni Pocock. The new species has small body, yellowish-brown in colour, darker on carapace, closely granular on dorsum of carapace, abdomen and appendages. Chelicerae and pedipalps long and'slender. Pedipalp bearing 32 spines in total, the distitibiae of IV leg with 33 trichobothria. Other morphological details of the new species are also given.

Clove oil derived eugeaol, a natural product proposed as an anaesthetic for by many fish biologists and it has been used in many countries with great economic advantages and no apparent toxic properties. During routine haematological procedures, author has also assessed the suitability of clove oil to anaesthetize Cyprinus carpio L. prior to any blood sampling procedure. Twenty fish in the batches of four each were exposed to five anaesthetic batches of clove oil namely 30, 50, 70, 90 and 100 mg l^-1. The times to reach total loss of equilibrium and to recover the upright position were noted. Cyprinus carpio exposed to 30,50,70 and 90 mg l^-1 of clove oil concentration could be anaesthetized in 381-1230 sec., recovered within 894-1782 sec. and survived 20 min exposure trials. Fish tested at 100 mg l^-1 could be anaesthetized in 195 sec. and did not recover/survive from 20 min exposure trials. A concentration of 50-70 mg l^-1 appear sufficient and is recommended for anaesthetizing Cyprinus carpio L. for measurement, weighing and blood sampling etc. and a concentration of 90 mg l^-1 may be needed to induce the deeper anaesthesia necessary for surgery and extended handling time, for fish ranging in length from 310-340 mm and weight 490-535 g at water temperatures ranging 20-30°C.

Limnological studies were carried out during monsoon months in Harihara stream of Shencottah, Tirunelveli district, south Tamil Nadu, which is a main source for irrigation and human uses. Values of water temperature oscillated within a narrow range of 27° to 29° C and velocity from 0.29 to 0.50 ml sec. pH values were always alkaline and ranged between 7.10 and 8.5. Dissolved oxygen content was between 4.17 and 7.50 mg/l and 2.92 to 17.54 mg/l, respectively. Primary productivity varied from 4.20 to 10.80 mgC/m³/day, net primary productivity between 0.48 and 2.76 mgC/m³/day and community respiration from 3.72 to 8.04 mgC/m/day. Entry of domestic sewage and waste from coir-retting might have led to low primary productivity in this stream. The values of physico chemical parameters were below the permissible limit of drinking water standards (ISI, ICMR, WHO & USPHS) except dissolved oxygen content of the stream.

Methoxy ethyl mercury chloride (Emisan-6), a nonbiodegradable heterogenous compound, is frequently used as an antifungal seed dressing. Entry of this pesticide into animal's body has shown to induce neurological and reproductive system toxicity in several animals. The study was designed to determine whether Emisan-could exert its adverse effects on visceral organs such as liver, kidney, lung and intestine of adult female rats. Emisan-6 was administered to rats through gavages at various doses (1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 mg/kg) for 30 days. The lowest dose (1.0 mg/kg) did not alter absolute organs weight and histoarchitecture of associated organs. Although 2.0 mg/kg dose of Emisan - did not reduce organs weight significantly, the initiation of histological changes was seen in some of the visceral organs. However, a significant decrease in absolute and relative visceral organs weight and severe alterations in histoarchitecture of these visceral organs were observed at highest dose of Emisan-6 (3.0 mg/kg) used in the study. These results clearly indicate that, similar to nervous and reproductive system, Emisan-promotes visceral organs toxicity in adult female rats.

The origin of egg-shell precursors, their chemical nature and formation of egg-shells were studied histochemically in two monogenetic trematodes viz., Hamatopeduncularia indicus and Mizellus indicus. The shell precursors such as basic proteins, phenolic substances and phenolases were found in vitelline cell globules. The presence of these compounds indicate the egg-shells are highly stable quinonetanned proteins.

Combination of progestin and androgen has received attention as a possible male contraceptive. The progestin is thought to reduce gonadotropin release and suppress spermatogenesis while the sex accessory organs and male characteristics are maintained by the simultaneous administration of testosterone. In the study the histology and ultrastructure of testis of Funambulus pennanti treated with medroxy progesterone (Provera, Upjohn) (1 mg daily/30 and 1 mg daily/60 days) alone and in combination with Sustanon (combination of testosterone ester). 0.1 mg DMPA + 1 mg Sustanon I 30 days were studied. The vehicle treated control testis revealed all stages of spermatogenesis and Senoli cells with normal cellular organelles while DMPA treated groups for 30 and 60 days showed damage to the seminiferous epithelium and arrest of spermatogenesis at tap phase spermatid resulting into azoospermia. Ultrastructural studies apart from revealing damage to Golgi, early cap and late cap-phase spermatids also revealed damage to the spermatogonial cells. The degenerative changes include commencement of degeneration of nuclear wall at Golgi and cap phase spermatid, appearance of vacuoles in between and within and an increase in the coarseness of nuclear material. Some necrotic spermatids were surrounded by Sertoli cells and parts of spermatids lay within lysosome-like structures in the cytoplasm of Senoli cells. Abundant lipid droplets, lysosomes and vacuoles were noticed in the Sertoli cells in the treated groups. But in the maintenance treatment partial restoration of spermatogenesis was observed.

The carcinogenic property of three commonly used organophosphates; dimethoate, methyl parathion and monocrotophos was evaluated by using microsomal degranulation as a parameter. Rats were treated with the three organophosphates (1/5 - 1/8 LD₅₀) for 90 days, and their livers were used for the microsomal degranulation studies. Monocrotophos caused maximum microsomal degranulation (25%) followed by dimethoate (18.07%) and methyl parathion (13.44%). Thus monocrotophos showed maximum carcinogenic activity. Moreover lesions were found in the livers of monocrotophos-treated rats. However, the studies are thus indicative of carcinogenic potential of these three organophosphates even in low doses.

The cell surface of eukaryotic organisms is endowed with various receptor determinant molecules which are collectively called glycoconjugates. The microbial organisms/pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites possess complementary proteins namely the lectins in their surface domains which bind specifically to the carbohydrate ligand sites of the host cells. The above cell surface molecular compatibility between the host cells and the pathogens enable the latter to adhere to the former and invade. The soluble lectins viz., the haemagglutinins represent the homing molecules in the immune surveillance of such pathogenic intruders inside the host tissues. They are also employed as diagnostic probes by virtue of their binding specificities with TSCSAs of (Tumour specific cell surface antigens) transformed tumour cells. The understanding of the various functions of lectin biomolecule will hold promises to frame a new profile in drug designing and vaccine therapy against dreadful diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, cancer and AIDS etc.

Five new species of Parastephanellus viz. P.zoniotus Narendran sp. nov., P.euphorbiae Narendran and Sudheer sp.nov., P.zandanus Narendran and Girishkumar sp. nov., P.gadagkari Narendran and Santhosh sp. nov. and P. picrocarpusi Narendran and Sheeba sp. nov. are described and illustrated. P.zoniotus Narendran sp. nov. is similar to P. gadagkari Narendran and Santhosh sp. nov. but differs in having the anterior two-thirds of preanular part of pronotum cross carinate and frons below anterior tooth reticulate-punctate with cross-carinae. P . euphorbiae Narendan and Sudheer sp.nov. differs from the closely resembling species of P.malayanus Cameron and P.rubripictus Elliot in having nine cross carinae and a median groove on the vertex. P.zandanus Narendran and Girishkumar sp. nov. can be distinguished from P. pygmaeus Endertein in the sculpture on vertex and post-vertex. P. picrocarpusi Narendran and Sheeba sp. nov. differs from the other species of the genus in having a short median sulcus on vertex and four deep smooth irregular pits on the peripeciolar depression . P. gadagkari Narendran and Santhosh sp.nov. closely resembles P. zoniotus Narendran but differs in having preanular part of pronotum cross reticulate-striate and frons strongly cross striate from base of posterior tooth to toruli. The species P. rubripictus Elliot is reported for the first time from Papua New guinea. A key to species of Parastephanellus of Papua New Guinea is provided.

Freshwater molluscs constitute an important component of the ecosystem. About 37% of all recorded animal extinctions are molluscs, which accounts for more than all the observed bird and mammal extinctions combined. For such reasons, the UN's Global Environmental Facility as well as the IUCN / SSC emphasize for more research on malacofauna. In the study, it has been analyzed and compared protein profiles from different tissues viz. gill, foot and mantle of two freshwater bivalves Lamellidens marginalis (Lamarck) and L. corrianus (Lea) that are predominantly seen in the riverine environment. Species-specific unique protein bands that are also tissue-specific could be found in all the tissues analyzed. These protein markers can supplement the classical meristic and morphometric characters used by taxonomists for species identification and can be used as tool for upgrading the existing information on molluscan taxonomy.

Vitamin-A is required for growth, reproduction and the maintenance of life. Vitamin A in low doses (7.5 mg/kg body weight) was injected intraperitoneally to albino rats on gestation day 11 (sperm + ve = 0 day). An equivalent amount of the vehicle (normal saline) was similarly injected to corresponding control group of rats. On 20th day of gestation, the rats were sacrificed . In the treated group various external malformations like corneal opacity with exophthalmos, shortening of upper limb and a significant reduction in fetal body weight and size (decreased crown rump (CR) length) were found. No such anomalies were observed in control group. On histological evaluation, there was infiltration of degenerating pyramidal and inflammatory cells along with dilated ventricle and loss of architectural pattern in different layers.

Lipids are most important structural components of the various biological membranes, hence the studies on the effect of the food colourant on it are likely to throw light on the biological functioning of the colour. In the study the sub lethal dose of the sunset yellow given to rats produced significant changes in total lipid and various lipid fractions. The increase in the lipid showed positive correlation with the dosage. Although all lipid parameters are elevated the maximum increase was seen in tryglycerides and the lowest elevation was observed in cholesterol. Sunset yellow administration produced liver necrosis and hence the changes incurred in the lipid metabolism caused by liver damage.

Biology of common leopard butterfly (Phalanta phalanta) was studied both in laboratory and natural conditions mainly emphasizing the duration and behaviour of oviposition, hatching, different stages of caterpillar, pupation and adult emergence of the species. It was observed that common leopard used only single host plant (Flacourita montanta) for egg laying. The study revealed that the common leopard has completed its life cycle through four different larval instars. During June, July and August, it required minimum of 13.7 days and maximum of 14.5 days frpm egg hatching to adult emergence, whereas minimum of 18.1 and maximum of 18.4 days required during the month of November. The fourth instar larvae were recognised as voracious stage, where they consumed 75.4 percent of food.

Himalayas are the main watersheds in the Indo-Gangetic region, having numerous rivers, streams, lakes and reservoirs. The Western Himalayas face a serious water crisis on account of the low inflows, which are the least during the last fifteen years. This area may face a serious water crisis in the coming years. The presence of the dams like Tehri in the seismically active areas poses a great threat to the mankind. The dams, big or small, create a habitat unsuitable for the hillstream fishes leading to the decline in the endemic fish fauna. The classic example of habitat destruction leading to the decline in the fish fauna, being the Gobindsagar reservoir, where the catch of exotic silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Val.) has risen from a mere 2.00% in 1978 to 84.73% in the year 1997-98 at the expense of two indigenous carps namely Catla catla (Ham.) and Tor putitora (Ham.). Advocates the need for the provision of fish ladders in dams to facilitate auto stocking in the natural water bodies and also for upstream migration of the native fishes.

The cyst membrane proteins can be used to identify unknown samples of Artemia and establish their taxonomic status. The conclusions of the study provide a means of differentiating mixed samples of Artemia.

Attempt was made to study the changes in the various protein fractions in the electrophoretograms of common carp, Cyprinus carpio Linn, exposed to 50 ppm of lead nitrate and copper nitrate. Significant changes were observed in the electrophoretograms and also in specific gravity of serum. Increase in protein percentage was observed in fractions, I, IV and VI but decreased in freactions II, III and V to lead intoxication. Serum specific gravity also decreased due to lead. Due to copper intoxication fractions II, III and V were totally disappeared, but protein in fractions I, IV and VI and serurn specific gravity was increased.

Objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of Sexual Transmitted Diseases on CD4 cell count in HIV positive patients. A total of 390 persons screened between January 2002 and July 2004 in three STD clinics in Adilabad. Andhra Pradesh. On screening 390 persons, only the overall prevalence of HIV was found to be 11 per cent, various Sexual Transmitted Diseases was found to be 27 per cent and STDs with HIV was found to be 21 per cent. In STDs Syphilis, Gonorrhoea were commonest and Candidiasis infection had a statistically significant. Fifty four per cent HIV infected patients CD4 cell count was recorded as less than 200 cells/cubic mm. those are having multiple Sexual Transmitted Diseases. A significant reduction of CD4 cell count among the patients affected by STDs, as compared to those unaffected. These data suggests that STDs may facilitate HIV Transmission by depletion of CD4 cell count. A high prevalence of STDs and HIV infection are found in a population characterized by low levels of knowledge about STD/HIV, and evidence of inappropriate health seeking behavior for STDs.

Toxicity of ammonium sulphate on the respiratory organs of the air-breathing 'murrel' Channa striata has been analysed using certain biochemical techniques for the estimation of nucleic acid (both DNA and RNA), protein and lipid contents. These important bio-molecules of all the three respiratory organs (gills, aerial respiratory organs and skin) showed considerable fluctuations at several stages of treatment thus severely affecting many of their physiological activities (like respiration, osmoregulation and excretion). Biochemical analyses of some of the aforesaid moieties of the respiratory organs may be used as potential bio-indicators of the disturbed aquatic environment, caused by various xenobiotics (including ammonium salt).
