Study suggests that pork available in market is highly contaminated with cadmium, followed by buffalo meat, sheep meat, chicken and mutton. Freshwarter fishes, Heteropneustes, Clarius and Channa were also found to contain cadmium. Vegetables retained less cadmium in comparison to flesh samples.

Investigation deals with the comparative study of the concentration of heavy metals in the blood of Achatina fulica Bowdich with special reference to Durgapur Industrial Area. The results show that the concentrations of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Mn, and Fe present in the hemolymph of A. fulica were significantly higher in amount in the snail individuals fed with the vegetation grown by using the effluents mixed water and sludge manure compared to normal vegetations. The results further revealed that the concentrations of heavy metals in the hemolymph of the snail collected from the field of the industrial belt of Durgapur were appreciably higher than that of the snails collected from Joypur forest area and from the Gangetic plains of Diamond Harbour subdivision respectively.

The activity of GOT, GPT, and LDH showed marginal changes over their control values. The difference might be due to the cumulative toxic effect of dimethoate and disruption of enzyme systems by blocking the active sites and tissue damage.

Recent survey conducted to explore existing status of bats in and around Jaisalmer of Great Indian Desert (The Thar) revealed that this region had seen remarkable change with respect to number of chiropteran species reported four decades back. Out of three microchiropteran species (Rhinopoma microphyllum kinneari, Rhinopoma hardwickii and Tapozus perforates) reported from the region during the early sixties of twentieth century, two (Rhinopoma microphyllium kinneari and Tapozus perforatus) have vanished while one new (Taphozus perforatus) has occupied the various sites of the region in due course of gaps in bat research.

Freshwater fish Cyprinus carpio when exposed to the sublethal concentration (83.60 ppm) of plant toxin from Sapindus laurifolius, significant decrease in total protein, lipid and glycogen content of liver, muscle and kidney was observed after 96 hrs of exposure period. Maximum decrease in glycogen was recorded as 19.33, 14.64 and 15.15 respectively in liver, muscle and kidney. Percentage decrease in calories was as 14.61, 12.51 and 9.84 cal/100 gm respectively in muscle, liver and kidney. The results were discussed on the basis of metabolism of the fish.

Enzyme measurements reflect more clearly the feeding conditions during the early life larvae than coventional survival and growth parameter. In Clarias gariepinus amylase activity was found in adequate amount while protease activity was found inadequate in the fish group upto 5 g and protease activity was adequate in the fish group above 5 g. Decreased amylase and protease activity was noticed just after feeding, after then their activity increases. Protease activety was absent in the oesophagus and intestine in fish group under 5 g but above 5 g fish group protease, activity was absent only in the oesophagus. During unfed condition (1.5 days) amylase secretion was found in good amount in the oesophagus, stomach and ghepatopancreas above 5 g fish group. The results indicate clearly an omnivorous nature of the studied fish.

Variation in physico-chemical characteristics of the ecosystem influences the number and distribution of planktonic population in the aquatic system. Plankton also acts as the indicator of water quality and degree of popullation. Water quality of Sahastradhara hill-stream has deteriorated considerably due to increased human interferences and anthropogenic activities in several ways viz. Bathing, dumping of domestic waste, sewage discharge etc. An investigation was conducted on planktonic diversity and water quality of Sahastradhra hill-stream during 2004. The distribution pattern of plankton was found as Bacillariophyceae <62> Chlorophyceae <62> Cynophyceae.

Study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of caffeine (1,3,7-Trimethylxanthine) in arsenic induced toxicity in an experimental model, the freshwater gastropod snail, Bellamys bengalensis. Significant decrease in protein content was observed in arsenic trioxide exposed snails as compared to control. The groups exposed to arsenic trioxide along with caffeine showed more protein content in the tissue than those exposed to heavy metal. Pre exposed snails to arsenic trioxide showed fast recovery and higher protein content in caffeine treated snails than those which were allowed to cure naturally.

Month wise percentage distribution of each species is discussed separately in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry coast and Andhra Pradesh coast. Species abundance was more in Mandapam and less in Kattumavadi.

Biodegradation of BHC, DDT and Endosulfan by a bacterium Pseudomonas species has been reported by thin layer chromatography. After degradation Pseudomonas converted P'P' DDT to P'P' TDE, P'P' TDEE and P'P' DDA. No detectable amount of DDE was observed upto 30 days of Pseudomonas in broth culture. Pesudomonas degrades BHC by isomerization produce α-BHC and δ-BHC. TLC detected some of the unidentified spots of BHC metabolites. Beta-endosulfan isomerized to α-endosulfan, which further metabolized into endosulfan sulfate, endosulfan diol, endosulfan hydroxyether, endosulfan ether by Pseudomonas. Two hydrophilic and one lipophilic unidentified metabolite were detected in the Pseudomonas culture upto 30 days of incubation.

To date as many as 3000 fish species have been karyologically analyzed. In the study Ompok malabaricus was selected for karyotypic studies. The usual colchicine-trisodium citrate - flame drying - Giemsa staining technique was followed. Metaphase chromosome spreads were analysed under low and high powers of microscope and photographed. Karyotype analyses revealed the presence of 2n = 54 chromosomes (n = 27) and also the presence of 36 metacentric chromosomes; 12 sub metacentric chromosomes and 6 telocentric chrosomes in a diploid set for Ompok malabaricus. The chromosomal information described here should be useful in monitoring gynogenetic population, triploidization and hybridization in this species.

Cellular reponses of ovaprim in Labeo rohita was conducted on the basis of histological observation of pituitary gland. It was found that, ovaprim injected fishes show conspicuous changes in GtH cells activity in proximal pars distalis of pituitary gland. The GtH cells of proximal pars distalis show large quantity of granules in the cytoplasm. It is also found that fish injected with hormone by any other mode induce increase in cell size, nuclear size and cytoplasmic granulation compared with untreated fishes. It also reveals that increase granulation of GtH cells on ovaprim treatment receptive role of brain for mediating has been noticed for the successful breeding in L. rohita.

Data on 2040 records of halfbreds (FG and JG) and three breed Group JFG and BFG) Gir crosses were collected and analysed by least-squares method. The genetic group, period and season of calving, parity age and weight at first calving were considered as sources of variation. The overall least-squares means for calving interval of first five lactations and their pooled were 419.604±4.38, 02 401.89±7.02, 401.32±5.82, 400.62+8 .16, 387.33±12.58 and 403.45±3.45 days respectively. The calving interval of first five lactations were non-significantly affected by all the sources of variation except genetic group effect (P<60>0.05) on first calving interval. The genetic group lactation order (P<60>0.05) and period of calving (P<60>0.01) had-Significant effect on the pooled calving interval.

Study was carried out for a period of about 20 months i.e. February 2000 to November 2001 covering two consecutive cropping seasons. Shrimp culture conditions remain under stress due to frequent fluctuation of water quality parameters beyond the tolerance limit. The parameters like temperature, hardness and salinity influence the prevalence and distribution of parasites in the bheries of low saline region. the common protozoan ectoparasites identified were Zoothamnium sp., Vorticella sp., Epistylis sp. and Acineta sp. in the study. The only dominating endoparasite found were microsporidians (Nosema sp.) that to with low parasitic frequency index (PFI). Poor water quality, no feeding practice and poor health management were some of the key factors leads to stress and subsequent attachment of parasites.

Microzooplankton is an important component in the diet of first feeding stage of marine fish larvae and their role in the economy of the aquatic ecosystem depends on their ability to convert plant material into animal substance. A simple method for the use of microzooplankton as feed in copepod culture was attempted. The copepods are abundantly found in the tropical waters and are considered to be important fish food organisms in fish hatcheries. Adult females or Acartia spinicauda, Paracalanus parvus, Euterpina acutifrons and Oithona rigida, collected from Vellar estuary, were maintatined in 25 litre capacity of each plastic tanks and daily fed with a mixed ration of Tintinnopsis tocantinensis, T. directa, T. beroidea, T. tubulosa, T. nucula, Favella philippiensis and less number of rotifers, Bracbionus plicatilis, B. calyciflorus and phytoplankton like Thalassiosira sp. Skeletonema costatum, Rhizosolenia sp. Ceratium furca and Dinophysis caudata were used as feed for copepods at the density of 5000 cells/l. The cultures were gently aerated; salinity, pH and temperature were maintained between 30 and 35%, 7.2 and 8.2 and 27 and 31°C respectively. The cultures were screened every 12th and 15th days to harvest maximum growth adults and copepodites. In this method, more than 6,500 nauplii/l was produced out of 50 per individual copepods and the copepod cultures were maintained for short duration for development.

Fish species from various aquatic bodies of Dibru-Saikhowa National Park were collected and identified during the study period 2000-2002. Altogether 76 species of fish from 24 families and 49 genera, including 7 endangered species were recorded from the study area. The status and abundance of all these recorded species are discussed, with the natural and anthropogenic pressures that they are facing.

New nemacheiline fish species, Schistura tigrinum is described here from the Barak river (Brahmaputra drainage) of Manipur, India. The species is characterised by 18-30 dark brown transverse bars on the body, irregularly arranged, often fused at different points, width of each equals pale white interspaces, moderately high adipose crest on dorsal and ventral sides of caudal peduncle, a long head (26.1-27.9% of standard length), dorsal fin with 8 1/2 branched rays and an incomplete lateral line.

New cyprinid fish of the genus Garra is described from the Khuga river of Churachandpur district of Manipur state, India. The species differs from Garra lissorhynchus (McClelland) in having a smaller number of: scales in lateral line (30-31 vs. 33-34), lateral transverse scale count (3/1/3 vs. 4/1/3), pre-dorsal scales (11-12 vs. 14), gill rakers (6 vs. 12). The fish also differs from Garra rupecula (McClelland) in having a smaller number of: gill rakers (6 vs. 8), scales on lateral line (30-31 vs. 34) and also in the presence of scales on the back. G. rupecula is characterised by the absence of scales on the pre-dorsal region. The new species also differs from both the species under comparison in its colour banding pattern on the caudal fin.

Sundarvan Nature Discovery Centre in Ahmedabad (Gujarat), collected data on the frequency of occurrence of snakes and other reptiles during the period June 1996 to July 1998. Twelve species of snakes were encountered/released, Cobra (Naja naja) being the most frequently encountered species, closely followed by Checkered Keelback (Xenochrophis piscator) and Rat Snake (Ptyas mucosa). Studies on the seasonal abundance of snakes suggested that their peak occurrences, corresponding to the monsoon rains, are due to additions to the populations. Predictably, there is some evidence that snake abundance is positively correlated with ambient temperatures during the non-breeding season. An analysis of the habitat preferences of various snake species suggests that the occurrence of a species inside or outside residential premises is roughly correlated with its food preferences.

Effect of sodium fluoride was carried out on rat intestinal epithelial cell lining, and the in vitro effect on a facultative gut bacteria E. coli. Intestinal loops were filled with sodium fluoride solutions (0, 24, 48 and 96 mM) and incubated in situ for 30 min. Results revealed a concentration-dependent increase of alkaline phosphatase and cholesterol in the luminal fluid indicating the release of enzyme and sterol from the epithelial cell membrane. Concomitant decline these in the brush border preparations were also evident. Ca²⁺- Mg²⁺- ATPase activities of brush border also found to be declined. In vitro effect of fluoride on E.coli also revealed a concentration-dependent decline in growth parameters. These results indicate substantial damage to the epithelial cell membrane and gut E.coli with higher fluoride concentrations.

Effect of neem compound (nc) and dimilin (igr) was observed on nucleic acids and protein contents of pulse beetle (calbsobnichus analis) After 24, 72 and 144 hrs of treatment by glass film method. The nc (neem compound) treated sample showed higher reduction in nia contents than dimilin, whereas dna content reduction was higher in dimilin treated samples. In protein content's quantity both compound showed similar trend.

Seasonal fluctuation in population of some important families of spiders in a rice agro-ecosystem of Kuttanad was studied during 1999 to 2001 by standard sweeping and handpicking method. The data was analyzed for species diversity, evenness and richness. Out of the four sampling sites, site-2 in upper Kuttanad exhibited maximum species diversity. A total of 22 species of 14 genera, from 8 families, were reported during the study period.

In the study, the possible role of free radicals in aminophylline-induced seizures was evaluated in albino rats. Aminophylline (theophylline in ethylene diamine; 50-300 mg/kg) induced convulsions in rats in a dose-dependent manner, and both incidence of seizure and mortality were maximum at 300 mg/kg. Conventional anti-epileptics, diphenylhydantoin and dizocilpine, as well as adenosine agonists were ineffective in antagonizing these seizures. On the other hand, phosphodiesterase inhibitors, pentoxyphylline and rolipram, showed insignificant seizurogenic effects. Pretreatment with antioxidants (ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, and melatonin) showed differential attenuating effects on aminophylline seizures and lethality. Further, prior administration of 1-buthionine sulfoxamine (BSO, glutathione depletor) and triethyltetramine (TETA, superoxide dismutase inhibitor), precipitated seizures and enhanced lethality in response to subthreshold doses of aminophylline. The results suggested of the possible involvement of oxidative stress during aminophylline-induced seizures.

The roundworms Haemonchus fatimaae sp.n. has been described and figured from the Indian gerbil Tatera indica trapped from Pipri Rice godowns, Karachi, Pakistan. These specimens are characterized by having body length 12.07 - 15.38 (13.72). with maximum width at midbody 0.17 - 0.19 (0.18) in male and in female body length 17.25 - 24.65 (20.95), with maximum width at midbody 0.15-0.17 (0.16). Cephalic end simple, rounded, devoid of lips or vestibule or distinctly scleretoized structure. Esophagus simple. Male bursa with large lateral lobes, bursal rays terminate at bursal edge. Spicules relatively short, slightly unequal. Vulva in the posterior part of the body, covered by a prominent flap, projecting caudally, while in some female specimens the vulva opening is obviously button-like in appearance. Eggs large. thin shelled 0.064-0.06 x 0.036 - 0 037 (0. 062 x 0 036).

New subgenus Neotetrastichus Narendran of the genus Tetrastichinaeluliday is rarsed with the type species Tetrastichus (Neoteinvuichus) vatlaiiana Naraidran sp nov. The new subgenus differs from the nominal subgenus Tetrastichus in liavini; unusually large falcate mandibles, Inpopygium ending before middle of gusler and relatively long epipygium. Another interesting new species Iniostichus kamijoi Narendran is also described from Borneo. It differs from its nearest relative L. kumatai Kamijo & Ikeda in having speculum present, funicle not separated from clava and in several other features.

A new species of the genus Salixocoris Ahmed and Abbasi is described from Karachi, Sindh with special reference to metathoracic scent gland ostiole and male, genitalia. This locality appears to be the new record of the genus in the existing literature. Its relationship with closely allied species S.sindellus Ahmed and Kamaluddin also known from Sindh and S. pesliawarensis Ahmed and Abbasi is briefly discussed.
