Spawning period of the Indian scad Decapterus russelli, as indicated by ova diameter frequencies is prolonged, extending from March to December with peak in April-May and September. Fishes with mature, ripe and spent gonads were noticed from March to December. The relative condition factor (Kn) and gonadosomatic index (GSI) values ranged between 0.93-0.98 and 0.75-3.85 respectively, with peaks in March-May. The size at first maturity of male and female is 143 mm and 155 mm respectively. The fecundity varied from 33,159 to 1,96,392 and the number of ova per gram ovary varied from 8,270 to 28,300, increasing with increase in length of the fish. The females dominated over males in the population.

Fishes of the genus Nemacheilus (Bleeker 1863) are represented by 10 species in Kerala. During fish species inventory surveys carried out in Periyar lake, three specimens of this genus collected were different in morpho-meristic characters and colour pattern from the species hitherto described. The new species is named Nemacheilus periyarensis after the water body from which it was collected. A key to the species of genus Nemacheilus reported from Kerala is given with a detailed description of the new species.

Marking animals with unique marks is necessary for estimating population densities when using the Capture-Recapture Method. The dorsal spot pattern method to identify individuals is considered best for such studies, as it does not cause any physical injury to the animal. Dorsal spot pattern in the bicoloured frog, Rana curtipes is shown to be an appropriate method to identify individuals. While studying the population size and density of Rana curtipes in the Western Ghats identified 160 frogs in the Western Ghats of Karnataka by the spot patterns on their dorsum. An identification catalogue, based on the total spot count, spotting patterns and size was prepared for each individual.

Glyptothorax manipurensis Menon, originally described from Barak-Brahmaputra drainage of Manipur (India), has hitherto been considered a junior synonym of G. sinense (Regan). Based on the type specimens and 7 specimens collected recently from Ukhrul district, Manipur (Chindwin drainage), G. manipurensis Menon is redescribed here as a valid species. It is distinguished from G. sinense in having a more broadly rounded snout, broader head, wider teeth band, origin of rayed dorsal fin equidistant between snout tip and adipose dorsal fin (vs. nearer snout tip than adipose dorsal fin), a caudal fin spotted or dusky with black spots (vs. plain) and granulated skin (vs. smooth). G. sinense (Regan) hitherto known from China and Myanmar is recorded here for the first time from India. The distribution of both the species is discussed.

New species of cyprinid fish Puntius muvattupuzhaensis is described from the River Muvattupuzha, Ernakulam district, Kerala, southern India. It is a small, elongate Puntius species with characteristics: dorsal fin with unbranched principal ray osseous and serrated; lateral line (LI) complete with 24-25 scales, lateral transverse scale-rows 4 between dorsal origin and lateral line, 2 1/2-3 between lateral line and pelvic fin base, barbels absent, body with two spots on the flank: a shoulder spot below 4th LI scale, and a caudal spot on 19th-21st LI scales, dorsal fin without spots. Its affinity to the closest species, P. punctatus Day, and other related species is discussed. A key to Indian species, including the newly described one, having a strong, osseous and serrated principal dorsal fin ray, is provided.

Some males of D. biarmipes- -synonym of D. rajasekari and D. raychaudhuri have a black patch on the wing. The patch extends from the apical margin of wing to the third longitudinal vein. Field and laboratory studies have been carried out in D. biarmipes to study role of male's wing patch in mating success. The field study shows that nature favors D. biarmipes males with patch. Although males without patch mated, males with patch have higher mating success suggesting the role of wing patch during courtship. Further, among mating males, males with patch had longer wings than males without patch. During courtship, males with patch oriented and mated faster; performed courtship acts such as tapping, scissoring, vibration, licking and twist dance more times than males without patch in both competitive and non-competitive situations. The results indicate that there is a casual relationship between the presence of wing patch, mating speed and success. Also there is a correlation between presence of wing patch, size of the flies and mating success.

The time-related effect (25 days and 45 days) of the increased Copper (Cu) concentrations (250 mg Cu/kg water and 500 mg Cu/kg water) on the livers of newly hatched chicks (broiler ross) was histologically investigated. Sections were stained with Hematoxyiin and eosin (Hein-Eo), Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) and Van Gieson. In comparison with the controls, cytoplasm of hepatocytes was stained to be darker in chicks, which were given 250 mg Cu/kg water. Whereas the liver was stained to be lighter than those of the controls in the groups given 500 mg Cu/kg water. The amount of collagen fibers covering portal veins increased at the low dose (250 mg Cu /kg water) although the amount of collagen fibers covering vessels decreased at the high dose (500 mg Cu/kg water). Again, 500 mg Cu/kg water caused endothelial cells to become more clear and led to degenerations of hepatocytes. While hepatocyte cytoplasm was affected less in this application, depending on the increased time (45 days), the content of glycogen was affected to a larger extent. In addition, the degenerations were observed at portal triads.

Administration of simvastatin (80 mg/kg, po. evening dose) and gemfibrozil (600 mg/kg, po twice) for 30 days produced significant decrease in the level of reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase and increase in the level of lipid peroxidation and various serum parameters (creatine phosphokinase, lactate dehydrogenase, serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, creatinine, urea and blood urea nitrogen). This suggested involvement of oxdative stress in rhabdomyolysis. Increase in the level of reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase and decrease in the level of lipid peroxidation and serum parameters after administration of antioxidant CoQ10 (10 mg/kg.ip) proved the protective effect of CoQ10 in rhabdomyolysis.

The safe concentrations of BHC, DDT were found to be 0.00128. 0.00151 mg/l, respectively.

Pitfall trapping, a commonly used technique for sampling arthropods in the field, often involves the use of either poisonous or non-biodegradable chemicals. Author explored the possibility of using a non-poisonous, degradable alternative, and edible oil in pitfall traps designed to sample arthropods. Results showed that a film of edible oil over water is an effective substitute for detergent solution for the capture of insect groups such as crickets, grasshoppers, ants, cockroaches and flies. Only in the case of spiders was detergent found to be significantly more effective than oil. For crickets, further showed that live trapping without the use of chemicals was a viable alternative to traps with chemicals. Pitfall trapping was, however, inadequate as a method to quantify relative abundance and habitat associations of crickets at the species level.

An experiment was conducted in rabbits to evaluate the possible involvement of oxidative stress in iron-overload animals. Ten adult female Newzealand white rabbits were divided into 2 equal groups with 5 animals each. Group II animals received intramuscular iron dextran injections (120 mg/kg body wt/day) on alternate day for 14 days (8 injections), while Group I animals did not receive any iron supplementation to serve as negative controls. The blood samples were collected by cardiac puncture before the start of iron dosing and thereafter, at weekly intervals for 28 days. The samples were processed to measure blood iron concentration, packed cell volume, erythrocytic lipid peroxide (LPO) level, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities. The blood iron concentration showed a rising trend following repeated iron administration, and the mean level recorded on day 14 was significantly higher than respective day 0 value. LPO level remained significantly higher from day 14 onwards till the end of the observation period of 14 more days after cessation of iron adminstration. Erythrocytic superoxide dismutase activities showed a transient significant rise on day 7, and thereafter, showed a declining trend, but remained statistically comparable to respective day 0 or corresponding value of the control animals.

Community structure of amphibian assemblages in three protected areas of Kerala - Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, Periyar Tiger Reserve and Agasthyavanam Biological Park - has been studied. Population census, diversity, evenness, richness, ecological distribution, niche breadth and niche overlap of amphibians were determined. There was high species diversity at all the sites. More than one female was available for each male of all the species. The amphibian community was evenly distribute at each area. Niche breadth was high in Agasthyavanam Biological Park, followed by Periyar Tiger Reserve and Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary. Niche overlap values indicate that the amphibian communities in the three protected areas show great ecological similarity among sympatric species.

Aim of the present work was to determine the protective and therapeutic effects of Panax ginseng extract on some neurotransmitters against carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄) in different brain areas of male albino rats. The administration of CC14 caused a significant decrease the content of epinephrine (E), norepinephrine (NE), dopamine (DA), serotonin (5-HT), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and gamma- aminobutyric acid (GABA) in all tested areas, on the other hand Panax ginseng extract caused a significant increase in the content of the neurotransmitters in rats pre and pot -treated with CCU₄. From the previous studies and the present results it is clear that CCl₄ caused a decrease in neurotransmitters content which may be due to the reaction of free radicals on cell membrane which led to increase the intracellular concentration of Ca⁺² ions and increase the release of neurotransmitters as the result the content is decreased. On the other hand, ginseng saponins act as free radicals scavenger and can suppress the membrane depolarization by reducing Na+ influx into the cells and consequently inhibit Ca⁺² through voltage sensitive current which led to decrease the release of neurotransmitters and increase the content. At the same time the extract can increase the viscosity of the cell membrane which led to decrease the release of neurotransmitters. Also, Panax ginseng can increase the synthesis of GAD which led to increase GABA content. In conclusion the work can suggest that Panax ginseng extract exerts a therapeutic and protective effect against environmental toxins such as CCL₄.

Reproductive activity cycle of Semperula maculata is divided into 3 phases, namely reproductive phase, post reproductive phase and prereproductive phase. Reproductive phase of Semperula shows condition of the genital organs according to arbitrary criteria. Semperula breeds from June to September. The rainfall is the most apparent of all the factors that might cause fluctuation in ripeness of female reproductive organ. It was evident that the reproductive activity cycle of Semperula was governed by prevailing conditions of weather. From the experimental data it is possible to correlate the indicated fluctuations with changes in conditions of female ripeness throughout the year.

Previous studies on silkworm, Bombyx mori L have revealed that PGF_2a showed improvement in the larval growth, development of post cocoon characters and lipid profiles of mid gt and the gonadal carbohydrate metabolism. It has been shown that different prostaglandins have different effects on enzyme activities and metaboklism of silkworm, Bombyx mori L. The ALKP activity of mudgut and ACP m haemolymph of 5^th instar silkworm larvae treated with PGF_2a, was much higher than that of control. But there was minor difference between control and PGE 1 treated. The LDH activity of haemolymph and fat body was increased from 18% to 58% in larvae treated with PGF_2a, But both in haemolymph and fat body, there were no big difference btween PGE1 treated and control. The catalase activity in silkworm haemolymph treated with PCF_2a was higher than that of control with per cent increase of 14 to 55 respectively, and the effect of PGE1 on catalase activity of haemolymph showed less difference. Generally speaking, PGF_2a significantly affects the experimented variables compared to PGE1. Therefore, it is reasonable to use PGF_2a as the promoter for improving the ecomomic characters of silkworm, practically.

There are, at present, at least 42 species of fish inhabiting Kaliveli floodplain and Uppukalli creek. Six species are confined to the floodplain, 19 are estuarine and 17 occur in both floodplain and creek. The IUCN Red List Category / Conservation status of 21 species could be determined: 1 Endangered, 5 Vulnerable, 14 Near threatened, and 1 Least concern. The only exotic was Oreochromis mossambica which is an Alien Invasive species. High concentrations of Chlorides around prawn farms exist, and this could have adverse effects on aquatic biodiversity.

As the basic necessity in biological control programmes, using parasitoids, is the mass propagation of maximum quantity of high quality females, it is necessary to know the factors that could maximise the prodution of daughters. Several factors have been recognised that influence the progeny production as well as their sex ratio in parasitic wasps. Host size had a greater effect on the reproductive success of several aphid parasitoid. In case of Lipolexis scutellaris Mackauer (very little known parasitoid) to deposit fertilised (diploid) eggs in large hosts (third instar nymph) and unfertilised (haploid) egg in small host (first and second instar numphs). Unpreferred fourth instar nymphs and apterous aphid adults also received more haploid eggs despite being lager in size than the preferred third instar nymphs. However, the perception of host size by themother was dependent of the extent of temporal variation in the host size distribution and on her previous experience of host size. Developmental period, logevity, mating potential, fecundity and progeny sex ratio of L. scutellaris emerging from small versus large hosts indicated that the host size affected the fitness of the daughters more than that of sons. The study could not provide any evidence of differential mortality of either sex of L. scutellaris in small versus large hosts. A study on the icthyofauna of Aymanam Panchayath was carried out. A total of 37 species of fishes belonging to 18 families and nine orders were recorded. Order Perciformes showed maximum family diversity. The highest number of species belonged to family Cyprinidae. Nine of the 34 freshwater species recorded are threatened. One exotic species Poecilia reticulata was also noted.

The study deals with the toxic effects of sevin, a carbamate and caldan, a cartap hydrochloride 50 sp, on the freshwater teleost, Channa punctatus. Static bioassay method has been used to determine the TLm (Median Yolerance Limit) values of these pesticides for 24 h, 48 h, 72 h & 96 96 h period which are 30 ppm, 25 ppm, 21 ppm, 17 ppm and 2.4 ppm, 1.8 ppm, 1.1 ppm, 0.6 ppm respectively for sevin and caldan. This shows that caldan is highly toxic in comparision to sevin. Toxic potency in solution decreased in both cases, more rapidly in sevin. It is concluded that sevin is less toxic if exposed for a longer period.

Twenty-eight species of short-horned grasshoppers (Acrididae) were recorded from 250 km² area of Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka, from September 2000 to June 2002. The surveys in 12 locations indicated differences in diversity and density of grasshoppers pointing to areas with anthropogenic influence, pollution and agriculture to be less diverse compared to less disturbed and polluted areas.

Sixty semen samples collected from three Barbari bucks were evaluated and diluted with tris-citric acid-fructose extender by adding 20% egg yolk and 5% glycerol as cryoprotective agent. The diluted semen was filled in 0.25 ml French straws, 0.25 ml in cryovials of one ml capacity and 0.25 ml pipetted out in tablet blisters made of PVC for pellet making. On completion of equilibration period of four hours all the semen samples in different packages were frozen over the liquid nitrogen vapour and stored at -196°C. The frozen samples were thawed at 37°C and acrosome integrity was studied using Giemsa staining technique. The overall mean acrosomal damage recorded for the ampoule, straw and pellet packaging were 19.10±0.55, 19.35±0.57 and 19.95±0.52 per cent respectively. The studies on acrosomal integrity during cryopreservation of buck semen revealed no significant differences between packaging systems, cooling rates and thawing rates employed.

Experiments to assess the toxicity of two heavy metals, arsenic and iron on fresh water chichlid fish Tilapia mossambica were conducted at different doses in aquarium of 25 liters capacity. The test fishes were exposed for 96 hrs to iron. It was found to be toxic within 24 hrs. at the levels of 50, 75 and 100 ppm. The LT₅₀ (medium lethal time) were found to be 7 hrs. 20 min., 3 hrs. 40 min. and 3 hrs. at 50, 75 and 100 ppm respectively. During ten days of exposure, the range of iron absorbed in the muscle was between 199 to 241 mg/gm dry weight. In case of arsenic, concentration up to 15 ppm was found to be non-lethal. Fishes started dying when concentration was increased to 15, 22.5 and 30 ppm, however 100% mortality was not experienced in any of the concentration during 96 hrs.

Toxicity of cypermethrin and fenvalerate to the freshwater fish, Garra mullya was studied using static bioassay method. The LC₅₀ values for 24, 48, 72 and 86 h were found as 0.179, 0.147, 0.116 and 0.0787 ppm respectively for cypermethrin, and 0.258, 0.218, 0.177 and 0.147 ppm respectively for fenvalerate. Erratic swimming, difficulty in respiration, jerky body movements, rapid opercular movements, loss of equilibrium, mucus secretion over the body, rolling the body and convulsions prior to death were observed in the fish under toxic stress. Cypermethrin was found to be more toxic than fenvalerate to Garra mullya.

Hipposideros lankadiva, a seasonally monoestrous bat, showed seasonal changes in accordance with th esex-cycle. Mucins elaborated by the glandular epithelium of Cowper's glands were studied by using a battery of histochemical techniques. During the active breeding period, Cowper's glands elaborated large amounts of neutral, sialo- and sulfomucins. Identical mucins were observed in the acinar secretion. During the post breeding and the sexually quiescent periods, the glands elaborated very small quantities of these mucins. Significance of mucins in Cowper's gland of bat and hormonal control over their elaboration is discussed.
