Four sites around Bangalore city were chosen for survey of non-volant small mammals (rodents and insectivores). The sites were chosen in scrub patches and plantations that are typical of Bangalore landscape. Species composition, population and microhabitat preference were studied. The study asessed changes in species composition and community structure with the change in land use patterns and levels of anthropogenic disturbances. In areas of high anthropogenic disturbance, number of species, and abundance was recorded to be very low, as compaed to areas of relatively low disturbance. Shivanahalli (least disturbed site, and most representative of wild habitats around Bangalore) recorded seven species, with Cremnomys blanfordi and Rattus rattus wroughtoni being dominant. Microhabitat preference was studied only in Shivanahalli, as the other sites did not have sufficient captures for analysis. Most of the captures were recorded in rocky areas, with dense shrub cover. The two dominant species appeared to avoid each other's territories.

Effect of Mercury Chloride, Cadmium Chloride and Arsenic Trixoide on the oxygen consumption of a freshwater teleost fish, Amblypharyngodon mola was studied. The results were recorded for acute treatment after 24, 48, 72 and 96 hrs. Similarly the Chronic treatments were recorded after 7, 14, 21 days. The observations indicate that the rate of Oxygen consumption was found to be decreased with increase in the exposure period. The decrease was maximum in chronic exposure as compared to acute exposure to Mercury Chloride, Cadmium Chloride & Arsenic trioxide.

Effect of aminoacid enrichment with mulberry leaves on the economic characters of the silkworm Bombyx mori L. (L x NB₄D₂) was traced. Mulberry leaves enriched with aminoacids showed significant effect in larval weight, cocoon weight, shell weight, shell ratio and filament length. The aminoacid concentration (leucine) at 100 ppm was very effective. Mulberry leaves enrichedwith aminoacid (leucine at 10ppm) fed larvae recorded a maximum cocoon weight (1760 mg), pupal weight (1458 mg), shell weight (302 mg), shell ratio (17.16%)and filament length (510 M). Shell weight in this treatment (100ppm) showed an increase of 34.22% over control and filament length is also 15.91% increase over the control. Various growth parameters like relative consumption rate (RCR), relative growth rate (RGR), weight gain, approximate digestibility (AD), efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD) were modulated by the aminoacid supplementation.

Male reproductive accessory glands of Dytiscus verticalis consists of anterior, middle and posterior parts. The glands are externally clothed by muscle layers. It contains two types of cells, reserve and epithelial. The reserve cells have little cytoplasm with prominent nuclei they lack secretory granules. The epithelial cells have well defined structure with cell walls, cytoplasm and nuclei, further they contain secretory granules, which produce secretions. Secretions of accessory glands are positive to P.A.S when diastase digestion was carried out to eliminate polysaccharides and they were partially liable indicating the presence of glycogen in traces. This reaction was abolished after subjecting to acetylation suggesting they were rich in 1:2 glycol groups. The secretions show positivity for Bromophenol Blue, Sudan Black `B' and pyronin `Y' indicating the presence of Proteins, Fats and Nucleic acids. The investigation aimed at the chemical nature of secretions of the male accessory gland.

Feeding experiments on estuarine B. plicatilis with Chlorella, Tetraselmis, Baker's yeast, and chicken manure fertilized medium indicated higher preference of Chlorella than other feeds. Culture experiments indicated B. plicatilis peaking on seventh day of culture with Chlorella while other feeds produce comparatively lesser density of B. plicatilis than Chlorella. Importance of B. plicatilis mass production has been discussed.

Municipal sewage water is a dynamic fluid that varies from place to place and time to time in terms of its organic and inorganic pollution load, which was analyzed for estimation of the survival threshold of a larvivorous fishin sewage water. In urban areas, human activities often create mosquito-breeding sites or increase the production of mosquitoes in sewage water bodies. The aim of the work is to determine the survival rate of a fish in sewage water for the enumeration of mosquito larval feeding rate by the larvivorous fish in sewage water. Mosquitoes depend on sewage water in urban areas to complete their life cycle. In the study following fishes are selected based earlier work on their pollution tolerance ability: Anabas testudineus, Gambusia holbrooki and Poecilia reticulata. Among these, Poecilia reticulata exhibited greater potential to survive in municipal sewage water than the other two.

The departure from cubic law has been tested and correlation coefficient r and Kn value (condition factor) have also been computed. The study revealed that there was a close relationship between length and weight, and is a very important aspect of fish biological investigation.

Ontogenic changes in the activity of phosphatases in Drosophila ananassae revealed significant differences between larval, pupal and adult phases. The acid phosphatase activity showed increased values during III, larva I and II pupal stages. It declined in the III pupal stage and consequently increased in the newly emerged adult fly. The alkaline phosphatase activity also increased in the III larval stage but decreased in all the pupal stages (I,II and III). In the newly emerged fly, again its activity increased. The above differences in phosphatases construe both histogenesis and histolysis during the ontogenesis of D. ananassae.

Investigations were undertaken to evaluate the toxic effect of aqueous extract of the leaves of Cestrum nocturnum (Linn.) to a freshwater fish Nemacheilus evezardi (Day). The results reveal that the fish is very sensitive to the steroid saponins and alkaloids present in the leaves of this ornamental plant. Present findings are correlated with the changes noted in the organism after exposure to digitronin, a potent ichthyotoxin of plant origin. Deleterious effect was seen as histomorphololgical features of stomach showed ruptured epithelial cells, vacuolization in lamina propria, reduced length of mucosa and shrinkage due to crumpled mucosal folds as compared with effects observed in control group of animals. This extract at the same dose and duration of exposure causes changes in histomorphology of liver cells, as revealed from microscopic examination of tissues. Concomitantly, deviation from normal structure of liver was also recorded, this included ruptured cell membrane, hypertrophy, vacuolization and degeneration. Alterations in histological features of mucosal layers of stomach and architecture of hepatocytes are almost parallel with digitonin toxicated organisms. These results conclusively established deleterious effects of the toxic principles i.e., steroids, saponins and alkaloids of C. nocturnum on fish, which cause toxicity and ultimate death of animals.

The gonads of the bivalve, Parreysia cylindrica were fixed in the first week of every month for a year and the reproductive cycle was studied by calculating volume fractions and number of developing stages from gonadal tissues using the stereological methods as developed by Wiebel et. al. (1966) and Briarty (1975). Simultaneously, whole soft body, mantle, foot, gill, gonad and hepatopancreas were dried at 80<144>C and from the samples of each month, ascorbic acid contents were estimated. The average ascorbic acid contents were highest in hepatopancreas (1.51%), where as lowest in food (0.96%). When the gonads had more previtellogenic and maturing oocytes, the ascorbic acid contents of gonads were high which indicates its positives role during gametogenesis. In hepatopancreas, the ascorbic acid level was higher during rich availability of food in the surrounding water and presence of more vitellogenic ova in the gonad. Results of other tissues are also correlated with the gonadal activity and are discussed in the light of the role of ascorbic acid in gametogenesis and metabolism.

Multispecies predator group Ranatra, Diplonychus and Laccotrephes was exposed to various prey densities of small and large sized Culex larvae for 1 hour and 24 hours duration separately. The predatory performance of the mixed predator populations was directly proportional to increase in prey density. The trend in predation rate was the same with small and large sized prey population of Culex larvae. Variations in 24 hours treatment were phenomenal than the others. The interaction between the predator number and prey size was inversely proportional for one hour and 24 hours treatments. Also changes in the predatory performance for 1 hour treatment were distinct than the other.

The genus Necremnoides Girault is reported for the first time from India Subcontinent. Diglyphomorphomyia kairali sp. nov. differs from all other species in having a forked propodeal carina; Pediobius kalpetticus sp. nov. differs from its nearest relative P. sorror Kerrich in having different proportion of antennal segments, long ovipositor sheath and without bronze reflections.

Bats, like other mammals, produce an assortment of scents that aid in intraspecific communication. Hipposideros speoris possess specific modified skin glands at distinct regions to secrete odoriferous compounds. Social lifestyle studies during the breeding season of these bats reveal that besides acoustic signals, chemical signals are also involved in communication. The secretions of the scent glands of Hipposideros speoris were identified on the basis of Mass Spectra, obtained by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. The resutls confirmed that the secretions differ in chemical composition with respect to sex and the locations of the scent glands. These variations provide information on sexual identity, reproductive status and related communications among the individuals. The seasonal variations in the chemical composition of the scent glands play a key role in reproductive success.

An aqueous extract of soap nut Sapindus mukkhrosi fruit was tested against a very common weed fish, Nemacheilus aureus which is found in almost all water bodies and streams of Maharashtra. The fish is very sturdy and continuous breeder, which competes all culturable aquatic organisms, hence drastically reduces aquaculture productions. Sapindus mukkhrosi has foam forming property, which is utilized for wasing cloths & as a herbal shampoo in rural areas. The fruit has a toxic substance, the saponin. From literature it is evident that saponin has a property which can modulate the mucus membrane. It causes hemolysis. fishes exposed to the extract cause death due to respiratory failure. Tribal fisherman community often use the extract cause death due to respiratory failure. Tribal fisherman community oftenly use the extracts for catching fish. Drastic histopathological changes were evident in specimens exposed to S. mukkrossi fruit extract having concentration of 0.060ppm. Damage to gill tissue becoming chronic with increase in exposure time.

Nathsagar is one of the largest shallow wetland habitats of India,which was traced by the migratory birds 10-12 years ago. Now due to favorable environmental factors, ample food and safeness, this habitat is at the peak in fetching millions of the birds from November to February every year. Recorded bird diversity of this habitat is around 69 different species all around the world. In auditing the safeness of this habitat for the migratory birds, study was undertaken for analyzing fish diversity the prime food for most of the migratory birds. The study was undertaken for the year 2000-2004. Fish diversity comprises, 7 orders, 19 families and 67 species. Out of total 67 fish species 40 species are food fishes and 27 fish speices belong to weed fish category. The population of large carnivorous fishes is drastically increased which is 16% as compare to other weed fishes on which it feeds. Also this habitat is reserved as a bird sanctuary and officially fishing was banned in this region from last decade its effect was and appropriate suggestions were made.

Eleven species of the Scolopendrid centipedes, two species of Geophilid centipedes and one of millipede have been reported from the study area, of which Cormocephalus pygmaeus has been reported for the first time from Central India and Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve.

Six isocaloric and isonitrogenous semi-purified diets which contained graded levels of phosphorus (NaH₂Po₄2H₂O: 1 to 8 g/100 g) ranging from 0.714 to 2.306% were fed to fingerling Oreochromis mossambicus for a period of 60 days. The basal diet of 50% contained waste silkworm pupae used as the mainsourceof protein with fishmeal and oilcake. To investigate the growth of the fish, field trial was also conducted in the fish diet supplemented with optimum level of phosphorus. The growth rate, proximate composition (protein, fat, ash & water), enzymes transaminases (GOT & GPT, lipase and whole body mineral (Calcium, magnesium and phosphorus) content of the tested fishes indicated that between 1.112 to 1.511% dietary phosphorus was adequate for optimum growth and normal body mineralization.

Study reports the Zooplankton community in the Khatijapur Tank, near Achalpur City of Dist. Amravati (M.S.) has been studied for a period of 6 months from August 2004 to January 2005 showed great diversity. Out of the 11 species of Zooplankton identified 2 species belongs to protozoa, 5 species from rotifers, 2 species each from cladocera and copepoda were recorded during the study period. The seasonal changes of Zooplankton in relation to physico-chemical characteristics is still under investigation. The study of species composition, abundance, distribution and variation with respect to biotic and abiotic factors help in future planning for the management of intensive fish culture.

Mate selection in Siamese fighting fish, Betta splendens has been investigated under laboratoy conditions. The male provides full parental care and role of the female in reproduction ends with spawning. Females of B.splendens failed to exhibit preference for large males or males with enlarged ornamental fins. The area occupied by the male (territory size) or the size of the foam nest constructed by the male failed to induce any associative preference in females studied. By contrast, majority of males exhibited significantly higher frequency of courtship display orienting towards large females and females with greater belly distention. Male choice for large female and female with greater belly size is tenable since the reproductive investment of the male is greater than that of the females.

Food and feeding habits of Macrobrachium latimanus collected from Kallar River, Kerala, India was investigated in detail with special reference tosize groups. The relative importance of various food components was determined by calculating the index of preponderance. Detritus, sand particles, diatoms, crustacean remains andalgae were found in the order of abundance among the food items. There was no appreciable variation in the nature of food in the different size groups. Studies on the variation in feeding intensity in the population and in the different sexes revealed that the feeding index was high in December.

The species Winnertzia photophila forms the second record of the male individual from India. Previously Grover (1971) described one male Winnertzia indica and one female W. orientalis from Allahabad. The species W. photophila sp. nov. comes close to W. indica Grover but differs from it in the proportion of palpal and antennal segments, and the structure of the male genitalia.

Sublethal effect of mercuric chloride on the muscle glycogen and blood glucose was estimated in the fresh water crab, Barytelphusa guerini. The Crabs were exposed to the sublethal concentration of mercuric chloride. Fluctuations observed in the metabolites of glycogen indicates the possible arrival of anaerobic condition of the crabs exposed to mercuric chloride.

Laboratory experiment was carried out to study the efficacy of some synthetic pesticides as well as seed kernel extract against the adults of two spotted red spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch.) on one of its important ornamental host plant Acalypha copperencis L. The experiment reveals that among the synthetic pesticides used dicofol 18.5 EC was the superior while endosulfan 35 EC was the superior while endosulfan 35 EC and triazophos 40 EC have been found to possess acaricidal effects also. Neem seed kernel extract was found to be uneffective against this mite species.

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of macro-zoobenthos from bottomshore zone of two fresh water ponds of Dhanbad in relation to certain ecological parameters were undertaken for a period of one year. The physico-chemical factors showed variation in different months of the year. Pollution indicator species were also recorded. A significant correlation was also recorded between the population numbe of Chaironomus larvae and total alkalinity content.
