Effect of alternate feeding of clam and pellet and fish and pellet on the growth of juvenile spiny lobster Panulirus homarus held in indoor tanks was studied. The mean weight of lobsters fed with clam and pellet feed, alternatively increased up to 166% while that fed with fish and pellet feed increased to 150%. In control the mean increase weight percentage was only 37%. Survival was highest in clam and pellet feed treatment (88%) and slightly lower in fish and pellet feed treatment (84%). The lowest value of 24% was found in lobsters fed with pellet feed treatment.

Effects of six pesticides including three organophosphates (dimethoate, methyl parathion and malathion), two organochlorines (endosulfan and heptachlor) and one botanical pesticide, neem oil on the activity of acetylcholinesterase in worker bees of five days old, fifteen days old and twenty five days old' of Italian honeybee Apis mellifera L. were examined. The observations were made by using two different concentrational levels (1/2 and ¬ of 96 hours LC₅₀) of each of the pesticides (dimethoate 0.030% and 0.015%, methyl parathion 0.05% and 0.025%, malathion 0.10% and 0.05%, endosulfan 0.070%, and 0.035% and heptachlor 0.09% and 0.045% & neem oil 0.030% and 0.015%). Two aspects were considered during this study are one age dependent changes in activity of AchE in control group of worker bees and other age age dependent inhibitory action of pesticides on activity of AchE in worker bees.

When 20 fishes were introduced in field condition per dip larval density reduced to 17.38 and 11.39 after 30 and 45 days, respectively from an initial value of 26.78. The larval density increased up to 21.2 and 24.37 after 30 and 45 days, respectively after removal of fishes.

Thar Desert of Rajasthan, comprises 13 districts stretching from Sri Ganganagar in North to Sirohi in South and Jaisalmer in its West. Eighty fish species were collected during 2000 to 2005 from here, belonging to 6 orders, 20 families and 37 genera. Three new records for the Thar Desert were; Mystus tengara, Erethistes pussilus and Nangra viridescens. Four north and north western districts of the state namely Sri Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Bikaner and Jaisalmer have a high fish diversity due to the presence of Sub- Himalayan water and Ghaggar river, while Pali and Sirohi district have a substantial number of fish fauna due to the presence of three perennial waters. The number of fish species increased in Jodhpur after the extension of lift canal upto kailana lake. The Sikar and Churn districts are devoid of the fish fauna during the study. Cypriniformes remained most dominating order with 41 fish species followed Perciformes with 19 species and Siluriformes with 15 species. The maximum numbers of species were collected from Jaisalmer district.

Over the last decade, a drastic crash in the vulture population is believed to have taken place in India and the probable causes of a such a decline are believed to be diseases, pesticides, poisoning and killing of vultures around airports etc. The study was undertaken in and around Jodhpur, to find out the ecology and population dynamics of the vultures, both resident and migratory and was carried out the ecology and population dynamics of the vultures, both resident and migratory and was carried out between 1996-2003. The population of Long-billed and White-backed vultures shows a decline of about 24% and 40% whereas the Egyption vultures have increased, by 36%. Migratory vultures have doubled in 2003. the population starts increasing from October touching peak in January-February and decreasing from March onwards, and is the least during May to August, Migratory vultures are not seen from May to September. They feed on dumping ground of carcasses. Loss of nesting and roosting sites was due to mining and cutting of trees. Further conservation and management programmes are necessary.

Quality of the semen of the common table fish Puntius sarana was evaluaied by analyzing milt volume, concentration of spermatozoa, percentage viability. duration of motility and scoring of motility of spermatozoa. The fertilizing solution was found to be the most suitable medium for activation of spermatozoa. The duration of spermatozoan motility was found to be highest at pH 8, temperature 5°C and salinity 5.23 x 10^-3. The duration of motility and percentage viability of the spermatozoa were considerably enhanced by storing semen in oxygen than storage in air. In short-term preservation at 4°C the undiluted oxygenated milt showed better results than the milt stored in extenders.

The concentrations of lactate were found to be significantly lower than control, in hemolymph and muscle. The hepatopancreas showed higher values than control. The pyruvate level also showed concurrently lower values than control in the treated crabs. The lactate/pyruvate ratio in both control and treated crabs revealed below unity. The results infer hypometabolism in the mercury chloride exposed crab.

It differs from E. vinciguerrae in having wider head, its width 88.9 (85.2-91.6) vs. 105.1 (105-108) % HL; smaller eye, its diameter 9.6 (7.3-11.6) vs. 16.2 (16.0-16.4) % HL. It also differs from E. stuarti in having shallower body, its depth 15.8 (14.2-16.9) vs. 18.1% SL; longer snout, its length 59.5 (58.1-61.5) vs. 47.6% HL; larger eye, its diameter 9.6 (7.3-11.6) vs. 4.7% HL; deeper caudal peduncle, its height 49.8 (44.1-56.7) vs 42.8% caudal peduncle length. Exostoma vinciguerrae and E. stuarti that synonymised under E. labiatum have been examined and found to have distinguishable differences from E. labiatum, and therefore have been resurrected as valid species.

Cytological investigations were carried out on two species of Pierids, Catopsilia pyranthe Linn. and Catopsilia pomona Fab. by using colchicine air drying technique. Mitotic and meiotic metaphase of C. pyranthe and C. pomona both revealed diploid count of 2n=62 chromosomes respectively. All the chromosomes have been observed to be holocentric in nature. The 'ZZ' male sex mechanism (homogamety) has been observed in C. pyranthe but the sex chromosomes of C. pomona were not distinguishable. Diplotene and diakinetic figures of both species confirmed the haploid number of chromosomes (n=31). Chiasma frequency at diakinesis was found to be 38.20 ± 0.52 in C. pyranthe and 47.60 ± 0.46 in C. pomona.

Distributional pattern of cladocera was studied in the five basins of the Dal lake, Kashmir, in relation to several physico-chemical parameters. Thirty species of cladocera belonging to six families were recorded from the lake. Main contributors of cladocera in the lake were Chydorus sphaericus, Bosmina longirostris Macrothrix rosea, Ceriodaphma sp., Graptoleberis testudinaria. Cladoceran community has changed significantly during the past seventy years, which seems to be related with the trophic evolution of the system. Marczewski and Steinhaus index indicated the highest similarity in species distribution between Nishat and Nigeen basins, while the Brarinambal basin recorded the least similarity with other basins due to its advanced trophic level.

Population of leopard is on increase in Gujarat State and has doubled during last two decades as a result of conservation measures. Population management is a new challenge to wildlife managers to reduce increasing man-leopard conflicts in some areas, especially around Gir and in Panchmahals where concentration of the animal is beyond tolerance limit. Unlike other cats, leopard is capable of exploiting degraded habitats, rocky hills and ravines for shelter and uses village sites in night to manage food by killing domestic animals, mainly goats, sheep and dogs. Level of man-leopard conflict has season variation in the study area due to change in availability of food and water. Average data of last eleven years reveals that summer (May/June) predation on resident livestock was 2.5 times higher than the predation in winter (February). Removal of some leopard from high concentrated area, especially problem animals, improvement of herbivore population, translocation of wild boar and hanuman langur from problem areas to the leopard populated zone and implementation of water hole management plan in summer may be some options to reduce the conflicts in the state.

Spiders hold a unique position in nature certainly due to their remarkable characteristics like construction of web, their use as predators and their morphological variations (Comstock, 1965; Patel and Bradoo, 1972; Patel, 1985). While exploring the spider fauna of the District Unnao (U.P.) a peculiar member belonging to the genus Amaurobius Koch (Family: Amaurobiidae) was found new to the science. The spiders of the family Amaurobiidae possess a special spinning apparatus the cribellum, other than spinnerets. Due to presence of cribellum they are known as cribellate spiders (Sadana, 1974). They construct the web with irregular snare having hackled bands that differentiates from other webs. The specimen showed marked differences from the known species (Tikader, 1970, ab and Yaginuma 1953) and hence it is a new species and named Amaurobius cribellatae sp. nov. after its group's name. The other genuses of this family are well reported in this country but very less information is available about the distribution of species belonging to the genus Amaurobius.

Studied sex ratio, population structure and roost fidelity in Indian false vampire bat, Megaderma lyra for four years using mark-recapture method, in a free-ranging colony at Pannian cave, Madurai, South India. Jolly-Seber analysis of mark-recapture data showed variable fluctuation in population size of both sexes. The population size from 2001 to 2004 varied from 138 to 37 for males and 213 to 61 for females. In all the years, females outnumbered males and sex ratio ranged between 0.2 and 0.3. Compared to males, females exhibited low roost fidelity, and also showed high percentage of emigration across four years. However, there is no significant difference in percentage of immigration between the sexes. It has been predicted that bats exhibit sexually dimorphic dispersal behaviour that depends on time and space, similar to other mammals and also hypothesize a few reasons for this dispersal, including population density, habitat destruction and inbreeding avoidance.

An investigation was made to study the relationship between mandible length and body weight in six species of small mammals, which are the chief prey base of the Barn Own Tyto alba. Regression equations for four species of rodent pests, B. bengalensis, M. meltada, T. indica and R. rattus are given for the quantification of prey biomass by using mandible length as a function of body weight. The prey biomass for S. murinus (40g) and M. booduga (12g) can be estimated by using mean body weight values.

Studies on birds of Summer Hill, Shimla (H.P.) revealed a total of 70 species, of which 64 species showed seasonal-local or long range migration and rest 6 were residents. Out of these 64 migrants, 44 were seasonal-local migrants, 15 summer visitors, 4 winter visitors and one was monsoon visitor. Further, 34 species were found to be very common, 19 common, 15 uncommon and 2 were occasional in nature. Human habitation (63) supported the highest number of species, followed by open-oak forest (52) and conifer forest (29). In addition, 17 species were exclusive to human habitation, 5 restricted to open-oak forest and rest 48 species were observed in two or more habitats. Moreover, one globally threatened (critical) and 10 biome-restricted species were observed in this area.

Study was designed to study the population dynamics of waterfowl at Kishanpura talab, Indore (M.P.). The results obtained revealed that 20 species of waterfowl belonging to 6 orders and 8 families were present during the study period. There was reduction in waterfowl population from 1087 (2002-2003) to 917 (2003-2004). The one of the major cause noted in the investigation for reduction of waterfowl was uncontrolled pouching of birds by local peoples for food and recreation. Other minor causes also discussed.

Forestry management and biodiversity of Ngengpui and Palak Wildlife Sanctuaries were studied by Rapid Appraisal Method on study tour held in April 2003. Ngengpui Sanctuary is the third largest in Mizoram and that of the Palak Sanctuary is the smallest one which falls under the jurisdiction of the Mara Autonomous District Council in South Mizoram. Both the Sanctuaries are quite rich in biodiversity but with different status of species richness and ecological habitats. Ngengpui Sanctuary is richly bestowed with plants and animals in such clearly defined ecosystems and the Palak Sanctuary is endowed with a beautiful natural lake (Palak lake) with thick canopy of canes around the lake. Wild elephant living alone in a limited habitat of Palak forest was found critically endangered. Study on forestry and wildlife management is presented in this paper.

An intensive survey on abundance of arthropod fauna was made at fortnightly intervals in the six rice cultivated districts viz., Varanasi, Chandauli, Deoria, Basti, Sant Kabirnagar and Siddarthnagar of Uttar Pradesh. A total of 226 species of arthropod fauna were recorded. Out of these 128 species of preys and 98 species of predators were observed. In these districts. The highest predator-prey ratio was found in Chandauli (1:5.76) and lowest in Varanasi (1 : 2.78). Nilaparvata lugens was recorded as the most abundant prey species in Chandauli, Deoria, Basti, Sant Kabirnagar and Sogatella furcifera in Varanasi and Siddarthnagar. Among the predators, Microvelia atrotuipeata was the most abundance in Chandauli, Deoria and Sant Kabirnagar, Arctosa himelayensis in Varanasi; Cyriorhinus lividipennis in Basti and Lycosa pseudoannulata in Siddarthnagar. The species richness of arthropods was highest in Varanasi and lowest for prey species in Siddarthnagar and predators in Sant Kabirnagar. Siddarthnagar was found more diverse in prey species and Deoria in predator species.

Vermitech involving culture of earthworm as well as bioconversion of solid organic waste into ecofriendry vermicompost provides a wider range of opportunity for all people. Work carried out at the preliminary level in the laboratory revealed that there is an increase in the number and weight of anecic earthworm, Lampito mauritii, locally available in the campus. The quality of vermi compost also depends on the solid waste - organic raw materials used for bioconversion. Soil enriched with vermicompost showed flowering earlier than that without vermicompost.

The secondary metabolites of Streptomyces aureofacians were found to attract and stimulate oviposition by gravid female Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito at four different concentrations. The highest effective attractancy of 96.84% was observed at 100 μl/ml of the culture filterate of S. aureofacians. The lowest effective attractancy of 65.18% was observed at 25 μl/ml. The maximum oviposition active index (OAI) of 0.94 was observed at 100 μl/ml concentration and the minimum OAI 0.48 was observed at concentration of 25 μl/ml of the culture filterate of S. aureofacians.

For purposes of studying the impact of developmental activities and tourism on Pench National Park, the entire Park has been divided into three zones : area adjacent to the village boundary and allowed use of NTFPs by the villagers; area open to tourism, and core area. The results indicate that peoples' proximity to the reserved areas does not affect the biodiversity much as their dependence on forests is limited to NTFPs only. Biodiversity is negatively affected by tourism pressures and developmental activities such as construction of roads, dams which cause disturbance to the biota of the area.

Antimicrobial activity of selected spices such as clove, pepper, coriander and cuminum was assessed against two pathogens namely Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Screening was performed by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion and plate dilution technique. Among the four spices tested the highest degree of antmicrobial effect was exhibited by the extracts of the buds of clove Syzygiu aromacticum. and the seeds of pepper Piper nigram. The seeds of coriander Coriandrum sativam and Cuminum Cuminum cyminum had least effect on Staphylococcus aureus. Escherichia coli was susceptible to all the spices extracts.

In an investigation of the potential adverse effects of the food colorant erythrosine on the spermatogenesis process, fifty male Swiss albino mice were orally intubated with varied dosage (0, 64,128 and 256 mg /kg. b.wt.) for a period of 30 days. The normal average epididymal sperm counts as well as the percentage of motile sperms were significantly (P <60> 0.001) inhibited with increased dosage. Moreover, erythrosine was shown to disrupt the normal morphology of the sperm head, a dose dependent increase in the percentage of abnormal sperms (microhead, macrohead, deformed head, broken head, coiled sperms and broken tails) were observed in all the treatment groups. These findings indicate that erythrosine in the used doses has a potential toxic effect on spermatogenesis in mice and in turn it may result in testicular dysfunction and reproductive performance.

Akysis prashadi is redescribed and reported from India. Laguvia manipurensis, whose generic placement was disputed has been assigned to genus Akysis and is redescribed. A. prashadi is distinct in having comparatively slender caudal peduncle, skin with tubercles all over body, lateral line incomplete while A. manipurensis, in having deeper body, deep caudal peduncle, skin sparsely granulated and lateral line complete.

Sisorid catfishes of the genus Glyptothorax of Manipur, India is revised. Glyptothorax ngapang .sp. nov., G. granulus sp. nov. and G. chindwinica sp. nov. are described from Chindwin basin of the state. Characteristic differences in the new species include: G. ngapang sp. nov. m its well tuberculated skin and slender caudal peduncle; G. granulus sp. nov. in having granulated skin and thoracic adhesive apparatus width 78.9-85.0% its length; and G. chindiuinica sp. nov. in having large head, depth at nape 55.8-56.7% HL, teeth on upper jaw as broad patch, lateral extent of lower jaw tooth band more than that of upper, and thoracic adhesive apparatus with a shallow pit in the centre. G. manipurensis is differentiated from G. striaius and its status and synonymy with G. sinense is discussed. A key to identification of species of the genus of the state is given.
