Five insecticides recommended on tomato against Helicoverpa armigera in the Punjab were tested for their deleterious effect on three trichogrammatids, viz. Trichogramma chilonis, Trichogramma pretiosum and Trichogramma brasiliense. All the test insecticides affected the trichogrammatids, however, endosulfan followed by deltamethrin proved comparatively safer than other insecticides. T. chilonis showed the highest emergence and parasitization efficiency followed by T. pretiosum and T. brasiliense.

Efect of different storage conditions (SC) of Corcyra cephalonica eggs on parasitization, emergence, sex ratio and longevity of Trichogramma chilonis was studied. Four different storage conditions were SC-1 - Deep freezed (-4 °C) for 24 h and then kept constantly at laboratory temperature (25.1±1.1 °C); SCª2 -Stored in refrigerator (4°C) and dally exposed to laboratory temperature (25.1±1.1 °C) for 1 h; SC-3 -Stored continuously in refrigerator (4°C) and SC-4 -Deep freezed (-4°C) for 24 h and then kept continuously in refrigerator (4°C). The results revealed that the parasitization and emergence were affected by the duration of storage as well as the storage conditions, whereas no effect was recorded on sex ratio and longevity of T. chilonis. The mean parasitization and emergence was maximum up to 2 days after storage and thereafter declined gradually with prolongation of storage. Among the storage conditions, the maximum (60.14%) mean parasitization up to 40 days of storage was recorded in SC-3 and least (16.66%) in SC-1. The maximum (45.93%) mean emergence recorded under SC-3 followed by other storage conditions upto 35 days of storage. The parasitization and emergence by the T. chilonis progeny reared on C. cephalonica eggs stored under different conditions also showed the similar trend and thus SC-3 was most suitable in terms of parasitization, emergence and performance of the progeny followed by SC-2, SC-1 and SC-4.

Toxicity of six commonly used insecticides on cotton was evaluated against American bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera populations collected from seven different cotton and non-cotton growing areas of Punjab. These populations exhibited differential susceptibilities (LC₅₀ value) to different insecticides, which ranged between 0.572 and 1.167 (fenvalerate), 0.562 and 1.223 (cypermethrin), 0.405 and 1.060 (endosulfan), 0.163 and 0.326 (deltamethrin), 0.074 and 0.164 (chlorpyriphos) and 0.034 and 0.066 (quinalphos) per cent. In general, populations from cotton growing areas were relatively less susceptible to all the test insecticides compared to populations from non-cotton districts. Molecular differences amongst populations were also observed which established the existence of genetic variability amongst these populations.

Experiments on the management of stem borer complex with insecticides alone and in combination with fungicide conducted at Rice Research Station (HAU), Kaul for two consecutive kharif seasons during 2001 and 2002 revealed that phosphamidon 40 SL @ 1250 ml combination with carbendazim 50 WP proved the most effective in managing stem borer complex, viz., Scirpophaga incertulas, Scripophaga innotata and Sesamia inferens at vegetative and reproductive stages and resulted in higher grain yields.

Linn to study the effect of salinity and low pH on the Vo₂, RBC counts and Hb concentration all were significantly higher in fishes aclimated to 30% sea water than in control group and those subjected to low pH. Biological characteristics of a local strain of Trichogramma chilonis were studied by exposing immature stages of the parasitoid for six hours to high temperatures (30±1°C, 33± 1°C, 36± 1°C, 39± 1°C, 42±1 °C or 45±1 °C each at 80±5% R. H.). Temperature shock at ≥ 39±1 °C, applied to different immature stages, prolonged development of the parasitoid. Mortality of immature stages was high when temperature shock was applied during egg or larval stage compared to that during pupal stage. Exposure of the parasitoid at ≥ 39±1 °C during different immature stages resulted in 53 to 75 per cent reduction in the fecundity. Exposure at ≥ 33±1 °C during egg or larval stage and at ≥ 39±1 °C during pupal stage resulted in significant decrease in female longevity. No effect of high temperature shock was observed on female proportion in the progeny of treated generation. Exposure of the parasitoid at 45±1 °C during immature stages proved deleterious to the parasitoid.

A significant variation in mite and nematode population was detected at each sampling period. Amongst abiotic factors, relative humidity, minimum temperature and rainfall had significant negative correlation with mite population while significant positive correlation was observed between sunshine and mite density.

Four selected phagostimulants-adjuvants, vlz. two flours: cottonseed flour-`CSF' and soybean flour `SBF' (each @ 7.5%) and two oils: cottonseed oil `CSO' and soybean oil `SBO' (each @ 1.5%) were fed along with HearNPV (PAU-1 Strain) @ 7.3 x 10⁵ viral occlusion bodies per ml to 2nd instar Helicoverpa armigera larvae through feeding sunflower leaf discs for 48 h in laboratory bioassay study for recording their potential in quantum increase in larval kill as well as the speed of kill. The 'CSF' and `SBF' each @ 7.5 per cent proved to be the most promising phagostimulants-adjuvants for tank-mix use with this virus with 100.9 and 96.8 per cent increase over virus-alone in larval mortality at 7 post-treatment days (PTD) and with 28.7 and 27.5 and, 55.1 and 54.6 per cent reduction in the lethal time values- `LT₂₅' and `L T<sub>50</sub>', respectively. The virus alone and the combination of virus with either `SBO' + Tween 80 (0.004%) or Tween 80 alone (0.004%) or `CSO' + Tween 80, respectively inflicting 42.5, 42.5, 43.7 and 47.1 per cent larval mortality at 12 PTD were the least effective treatments, compared with highest significant mortality of 74.7 and 69.0 per cent achieved when the virus was combined with `CSF' (7.5%) and `SBF' (7.5%), respectively.

Effect of Bt-cotton hybrids and Bt Cry1 Ac toxin on the mortality of Helicoverpa armigera revealed interaction of maximum mortality on leaves and bolls of hybrid RCH 134 followed by that on RCH 138, RCH 317 and MRC 6301, respectively. The maximum mortality on leaves was observed in 90 day old plants followed by that on 60, 120, 140 and 180 days old plants. However, in bolls, maximum mortality was observed on 140 day old plants followed by on 90,120 and 180 days old plants. Similarly, the amount of Cry1 Ac protein was the maximum In RCH 134 followed by on RCH 138, RCH 317 and MRC 6301 while the maximum amount of tannins was present in MRC 6301 followed by on RCH 317, RCH 138 and RCH 134. In leaves and bolls, a significant positive correlation of 0.96 and 0.97 between mortality and Cry1 Ac toxin content, while a negative correlation between mortality and tannins in leaves (-0.96) and bolls (-0.61) was observed.

Eleven mite species were recorded on 15 commonly grown vegetables in Ranchi district of Jharkhand, India. Seven species belonged to Tetrancynidae (spider mites), two to Tenuipalpidae (false spider mites) and one species each to Eriophyidae (erineum or gall mite) and Tarsonemidae (yellow or broad mite). Mite incidence was pronounced in hot summer months (April to June) followed by in post monsoon periods (September and October). Rainy season and winter months proved unfavourable for mite prevalence.

Growth (length, biomass and mean growth rate) and reproduction (total duration, clitellum appearance, clitellum completion, cocoon commencement, rate of cocoon production, incubation period, hatching success and mean number of hatching per cocoon) of indigenous Lampito mauritii (Kinberg) in comparison with exotic Eudrilus eugeniae (Kinberg) cultured on three feed substrates-clay loam soil, cowdung and pressmud (filter cake) have been studied over a period of 360 days under laboratory conditions (30 ± 2°C, 60-65% moisture). There is a positive relationship between length and biomass of both worms cultured on three feed substrates throughout the period of study. The decrease of worm length and biomass observed slightly on 63- 70th days in Lampito mauritii and 42-49th days in Eudrilus eugeniae cultured on three fed substrates are the results of the onset of cocoon production. After 270 days both worms in all these fed substrates show decreasing trends of length and biomass which are due to continued reproduction and aging. Among the three fed substrates, pressmud supports significantly maximum worm length and biomass (between 90-130 days in Eudrilus eugeniae and 110-170 days in Lampito mauritii), earlier attainment of sexual maturity (between 51-76 days in Limpito mauritii and 27-37 days in Eudrilus eugeniae), earlier commencement of cocoon production (37.7 ± 0 0 days in Eudrilus eugeniae and 76.4 ± 0.10 days in Limpito mauritii), shorter incubation periods (16.3 ± 0.28 days in Eudrilus eugeniae and 26.7 ± 0.81 days in limpto mauritii), more hatching success (98% in Limpito mauritii and 86% in Eudrilus eugeniae), more mean number of hatchling per cocoon (3.2 ± 0.03 in Limpito mauritii and 2.6 ± 0.06 in Eudrilus eugeniae) and shorter duration of life cycle (108.8 ± 0.07 days in Limpito mauritii and 60.2 ± 09 days in Eudrilus eugeniae) than cowdung and clay loam soil.

In cotton field, Trichogramma chilonis could go up to 10 meters in search of its host but with very low (0.34%) parasitization. The parasitization upto 5 meters was 15.93 per cent. There was considerable reduction in parasitization from 6 meters (9.69%) to 10 meters (0.34%). Host searching ability of Bathinda strain was better (17.03%) compared to multiple insecticide tolerant strain (14.81%). The mean parasitization during September and October was higher than during July and August.

The total red cell counts, Hb content, PCV and MCHC were found to be significantly reduced in C. catla on exposure to domestic sewage. On the other hand, the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) showed gradual increase in relation to sewage concentration and exposure period. Dose and time dependant changes were observed in all the blood parameters of the fish. The changes observed confirmed the impact of sewage on the physiology of fish which affects the growth.

Community structure parameters, viz. mean density (MD), relative frequency, per cent frequency, relative density and dominant value index for grasshopper community of Banni grassland were studied during 2002-04 and seventeen species were recorded from the ecosystem. MD of different species varied among different months. Phlaeoba cinctalis showed highest MD of 16.00 in December, 2003 followed by recognizable taxonomic unit (RTU) in December, 2003 and January, 2004. RTU was more prevalent in the community in comparison to rest of the species followed by P. cinctalis and Conocephalus maculata. No species was uniformly distributed within the sample units except for a few species, viz. P. cinctalis (July, Agust, September, November, December and January), Hieroglyphus nigrorepletus (December), Oedaleu sp. (July, September, October and January, 2004), Locusta migratoria (September, December and February). Among the various species, Oedaleus sp. was more frequently observed, followed by P. cinctalis. Community structure parameters revealed that Oedaleus sp. was the most dominant followed by P. cinctalis and RTU.

Oziotelphusa senex senex (Fabricius), commonly called, the freshwater tropical rice-land crab, belongs to the family Parathelphusidae (Sub-family : Spirolothelphusidae) of the class crustacea. Being a typical crustaceans; the body remains covered by a hard cuticle in the form of rigid exoskeleton, thereby exhibiting a characteristic discontinuous growth. Relative growth among crustaceans is usually deduced by isometric and allometric growth equations. Change or discontinuity in the relative growth has been reported in many of the species at the time of attaining maturity. The present studies aim at understanding the general morphometrics and relative growth of the crab species under consideration. The parameters considered for this purpose include carapace length (CL), Carapace Width (CW) and the body weight (BW) of the males and the females. All the relationships exhibited simple allometric growth pattern. Distinct sexual dimorphism was also reported in terms of the finite size attained, size of the chelate legs, growth rate and the shape of the carapace.

Seven insecticidal and one mechanical treatments were evaluated against sugarcane whitefly, Aleurolobus barodensis. Imidacloprid 200 SL @ 100 ml/ha proved superior over control against nymphs and triazophos 40 EC @ 1500 ml/ha against pupae over all insecticidal and mechanical treatments after 7 and 15 days of spray. Removal of pupae- bearing lower dry leaves was inferior to most of the insecticidal treatments tested but superior over control.

Exotic spiralling whitefly, Aleurodicus dispersus is reported in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra states of India. The pest is polyphagous infesting about 280 plant species in the country. Nymphs and adults suck sap from the leaves. Development of spiralling whitefly from egg to adult occupies 20 to 30 days. Heavy sporadic rains and cool temperature result in a temporary reduction in A. dispersus population. The population of spiralling whitefly is relatively higher during summer months and the density of the whitefly was positively correlated with maximum temperature and negatively correlated with relative humidity. Application of chemicals like dimethoate, triazhophos and monocrotophos and, cultural practices like pruning the heavily infested plants result in only temporary reduction of population of the whitefly. The local predators, viz. Axinoscymnus puttarudriahi, Cryptolaemus montrouzieri, Mallada asturand Cybocephalus sp. are unable to suppress it effectively. But the aphelinid parasitoids, Encarsia guadeloupae and Encarsia (?) haitiensis have been reported to be highly useful in suppressing the spiralling whitefly in Pacific Islands, African and Asian countries including India.

The present work is designed to understand the impact of the detergent (Henko) on fish, cyprinus carpio. Var.Koi. the fish were exposed to different sub-lethal concentration of detergent for three hours. Oxygen consumption and opercular activity increased with increasing exposure time and sub-lethal concentration of the detergents. The increased respiratory rate and opercular movement might be due to a sudden response of the fish to the impending toxicity of the the detergents.

Experiment was carried out from June'06 to May'07 to culture Clarias sp. and Heteropneustes sp. in paddy-fields along with paddy-crop in ranchi District of Jharkhand. The adult fishes of the two species were inoculated in two plots of area 30 d each @ 8 kg/plot in June'06 and were allowed to reproduce and grow till the last week of December'06 without supplying any supplementary food. The fish yield was found to be 201.5 kg per acre. The fish harvested were successfully stocked for four months in earthen pots @ 2 kg fish per pot without supplying any supplementary food except changing water of the pots every evening. The fishes died of starvation were picked out for daily consumption while changing water. The low land in Jharkhand was found suitable for fish-culture along with paddy-crop.

Mannose-binding lectins from snowdrop, Galanthus nivalis and jack bean, Canavalia ensiformis have anti-insect potential against a number of lepidopterans and coleopterans. The anti-insect potential of these two lectins was assessed for melon fruit fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae. The effects of various concentrations (ranging from 0-200 ppm) of affinity purified lectins from snowdrop (GNA) and jackbean (Con A) feed ad lib to the second instar larvae (64-72 h) in the artificial diet, revealed that both the lectins significantly prolonged the total remaining development period of larvae and reduced the pupation and emergence compared to untreated larvae. LC₅₀ values of GNA (37.50 ppm) and Con A (87.00 ppm) were calculated on the basis of adult emergence.

These two genotypes have been identified as `resistance-donors' against whitefly and MYMV for use in breeding programme to evolve insect resistant varieties of black gram.

Searching ability of Trichogramma chilonis adults was studied at Ludhiana during July to October, 2005. Maximum mean parasitization (25.93%) was observed in October which was significantly higher than in all other months. The minimum parasitization (8.49%) was noticed in July. The higher mean parasitization (52.07%) was recorded at one meter distance from the release point and it reduced significantly with every one meter increase in distance from the central release point. However, parasitization by T. chilonisadults up to 5 meters distance was considerable (17.69%).

The adult male and female measured 21.86 and 21.95 mm in length and 61.64 and 62.98 mm in wing-span, respectively.

Attemp has been made to study the effect of cypermethrin and fenvalerate on glycogen content of different tissues like ovary, intestine, gill and abdominal muscle of the freshwater hill stream fish, Garra mullya (Sykes). The fishes were exposed to sub lethal concentration (1/10^th of 24 h LC₅₀) of cypermethrin (0.018ppm) and fenvalerate (0.026ppm) for a period of ten days. The treatments of these pyrethroids brought about significant decrease in glycogen content in all tissues as compared to control. The maximum decrease was observed in ovary. The percent decrease of total glycogen content was in the order of: ovary<62>liver<62>intestine<62>gil l<62>muscle. The obtained results indicate that cypermethrin has more toxic effect than fenvalerate. The Significance of these studies as bioindicator for assessing the toxicity and economic importance of the fish, are discussed.

Based on fruit damage, yield loss and marketable yield,. four sprays of DOR-Bt (2.0 kg/ha) at 10 days interval proved effective for management of the pest. However, It was on par with chemical control (three alternate sprays of endosulfan and deltamethrin) and DOR Bt (1.5 kg/ha).

Toxicity of emamectin benzoate and indoxacarb towards larvae of Plutella xylostella was assessed in the laboratory using leaf dip technique of bioassay. Larvae and pupae of the pest were collected from infested cabbage and cauliflower fields and reared in the laboratory under controlled conditions to obtain F₁ generation. LC₅₀ values for the new molecules were calculated and compared. Emamectin benzoate was found to be more toxic as compared to indoxacarb. The susceptibility data generated will serve a useful purpose to monitor the change in susceptibility status of P. xylostella to these compounds.

Light traps were operated at Ludhiana during 1990, 1994, 1995 and 1999 to 2003 and at Kapurthala during 1999 to 2003. During the crop season, seven rice insect pest species appeared in succession in light trap. All started appearing in April but their population did not increase during May - June due to prevailing high temperature and low relative humidity. All insect pests attained peak during warm and humid months of August-September and then showed decline with the fall in the minimum temperature and evening relative humidity. Among various stem borer species, Scirpophaga incertulas was the most predominant.

Response of Helicoverpa armigera to transgenic Bt-cotton from three locations in Punjab, viz. Bathinda, Muktsar and Mansa was studied during 2003 kharif season. The field collected larvae were reared in laboratory and F₁ generation neonates were tested for their response to transgenic Bt-cotton. Fresh leaf tissues from 50-60-day-old plants of Bt-cotton hybrid RCH 134 were used as source of Cry1Ac toxin (0.87 to 0.91μg/g). The neonate survival (%) and average weight gain (mg) was the maximum in Bathinda population (92.5, 1.68), followed by those from Mansa (72.5, 0.95) and Muktsar (42.5, 0.71) populations. Comparative RAPD-PCR analysis of individuals from these locations with five primers, OPB-20, OPC-01, OPF-01, OPF-03 and OPF-04 identified several polymorphic DNA regions which established the existence of genomic differences among these populations. Computation of RAPD-PCR data for genetic similarity using NTSYS pc UPGMA established that Muktsar and Mansa populations were genetically correlated (0.73% GS), whereas the Bathinda population was highly divergent (0.43% GS) from the former.

Hymenopterous chalcid wasps represent an economically important group of natural enemies of insect pests of various crops. this is the largest super family of the order Hymenoptera and comprises several thousand of species from the world. the vast majority of species are parasitic in the egg or on larvae of other insects. some are, however phytophagous also, the importance of the taxonomic assessment of this group increases because of the fact that a majority of them are used in biological control programmes. The applied biologists have to rely on it because unless and until the identity of the pest or pests is accurately determined no control measure can work. A wrong identification may upset the entire control strategy. It is a cost effective control measure and works without adversely affecting the environment.

Studies conducted at Chhindwara Forest Circle during 1999-2000 and 2000-2001 revealed that infestation of Rhesala imparata on siris seedlings initiated from 25th to 26th Standard Meteorological Week (SMW) with 2.54 to 6.54 per cent incidence and mean larval population from 1.25 to 5.03 per quadrate (0.5 x 0.5 5q m) and reached to maximum during 32nd to 33rd SMW with mean incidence and mean larvae per quadrate being 25.18-32.77 per cent and 15.53-20.60, respectively. The infestation declined gradually and ended in 40th to 41st SMW. The correlation coefficient of the incidence and population of R. imparata vs max. temp. of the corresponding period was correlated negatively. The value of the correlation coefficient of maximum temperature for incidence and population, respectively was -0.44 and -0.43 during 1999-2000 and -0.42 and -0.44 during 2000-2001.

Oreochromic mossambicus (Perciformes, cichildae) reported from Jammu (river Tawi) present a new record for the Jammu and Kashmir State (J&K). The fish is described from thirty-three specimens collected from tributaries of river Tawiin Sehi and Falain regions of Jammu. The fish identified and described on the basis of main meristic and morphometric characters. It is found that all the meristic and morphometric features are significantly related (p<60>0.001) with each other and show a high value of Correlation co-efficient (r<62>0.9).

Estimation of losses to spring maize (JH-3459) by Atherigona naqvii under simulated and natural condition at Ludhiana during February 2004, revealed that the crop without dead hearts under both the conditions produced more yield (6.71 and 11.78 q/ha, respectively). It was also observed that the protection given at an early stage (5-day-old) to the crop resulted in minimum yield loss (18.77 and 21.9% under simulated and natural conditions, respectively). Delay in protection (15-day-old) increased the reduction in yield (30.99 and 32.42%) under simulated and natural conditions, respectively.

Organic contents like protein, carbohydrate and lipid have been quantitatively estimated after injecting fluoxetine to a female fresh water prawn, Macrobrachium lamarrei. Tissues such as haemolymph, hepatopancreas, muscle and ovary were tested and results shows that all the organic contents increased in the ovary and decreased in the hepatopancreas and muscle. The organic contents were mediated. via haemolymph. The deposition of organic contents in the ovary shows the ovarian development.

Effect of Folidol at three different sub-lethal doses, 100 ppm, 200 ppm and 300 ppm was studies on total liver glycogen in full-grown specimen of Channa punctatus. The total glycogen content significantly decreased as compared to control group. The change may be due to breakdown of glycogen to glucose under the pesticide stress.

Field study conducted to evaluate certain new insecticides against Plutella xylostella on cauliflower revealed that indoxacarb at 90 g a.i./ha recorded the highest mean larval mortality (67%) followed by spinosad at 75 g a.i./ha (62%), fipronil at 75 g a.i./ha (65%), thiodicarb at 750 g a.i./ha (57%), dichlorvos at 115 g ai/ha (49%), endosulfan at 350 g a.i./ha (43%), nimbecidine at 75 g a.i../ha (370%) and B.t. at 1000 g/ha (14%) one day after the first spray and all were significantly better than control. In general, there was an increasing trend in larval mortality with the lapse of time. After two sprays at ten days interval, larval mortality was 100 per cent in fipronil, indoxacarb and spinosad. The overall order of efficacy recorded was: indoxacarb <62> spinosad<62> fipronil<62> thiodicarb<62> B.t. <62> dichlorvos<62> endosulfan<62> nimbecidine.
