The extent of pollution caused by the commonly used fuels, viz., liquefield petroleum gas (LPG), wood cowdung, pigeonpea sticks and tree waste was determined in a rural habitat. The amount of carbon monoxide was estimated by multiple gas analyser and the smoke density was determined by smoke density meter. The observation were recorded at the initiation of burning after 50 minutes, i.e. after the completion of the work. The emission of carbon monoxide from wood was 389.34 mg/m³ at starting and reduced to 135.33 mg/m³ after the completion of work. The emission was minimum in case of LPG which was ranging from 120.76 mg/m³ at starting to 14.57 mg/m^{3 after 50 minutes. The data further revealed that the tree wastes fall in most smokey category, cowdung and pigeonpea sticks fall in moderate smokey category, wood falls in partial smokey category and LPG falls in less smokey category. On the basis of results obtained in the study, it was found that LPG is the most preferred fuel followed by pigeonpea sticks and wood.}

Present a neural network based approach to detect and assess the structural damage. The basic strategy applied in the study is to train a neural network to recognize the behaviour of the undamaged structure as well as the structure with various possible damaged states. Curvature damage factor (CDF) is used as a possible candidate for the damage identification by error back-propagation training algorithm (EBPTA). When this trained network is subjected to the measured response, it should be able to detect any existing damage. This idea is applied on a cantilever beam and a plane frame. The results show the efficiency of the developed algorithm.

A boundary element method is presented for solving a non-linear free surface flow problem for a ship moving with a uniform speed in deep water. The free surface boundary condition is linearized by the systematic method of perturbation in terms of a small parameter. The surfaces are discretized into flat quadrilateral elements and the influence coefficients are calculated by Morino's analytical formula. Dawson's upstream finite difference operator is used in order to satisfy the radiation condition. The method of solution is based on the distribution of sources and dipoles on teh body and the free surface, which will be obtained by a matrix solution. The matrix is solved by the L-U decomposition method. A verification of the numerical modelling is made using the Wigley hull and validity of the computer program is examined by comparing the details of wave profiles and wave-making resistance with the experimental results. The wave pattern consisting of transverse and diverging waves around ships in deep water is well predicted numerically.

Ceramic top layers of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) have gained increasing imporatance as thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) of heat exposed components in advanced gas turbines. In air plasma sprayed (APS) coatings the low inherent thermal conductivity of YSZ is further enhanced by the numerous microstructural defects from the spraying process. However, these defects also influence severely the mechanical performance and integrity of the TBC. Based on results from an ongoing collaboration between the Research Centre Juelich, Germany, and the Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute, Kolkata, India, the impact of the defects on the elastic behaviour is addressed in detail. Various characterization methods, e.g. bending and compression tests as well as depth sensitive indentation are presented. The experiments include globla and local approaches with the TBC in tension or compression and after annealing. The obtained nonuniform stiffness results, which cover a range between 5 and 100 GPa, are discussed in terms of the lamellar microstructure and the crack-shaped inter- and intra-splat defects of an APS-TBC.

Experimental work based on 2³ factorial design has been carried out on Turn master T-40 lathe to establish the effect of the combined turning and two ball-burnishing parameters on the surface roughness and surface hardness of aluminum specimen. The results have been analyzed by the variance technique and the F-test, showeing thereby that the lubricant, force, speed, and feed have significant effects of surface roughness and surface hardness. A pre-machined surface roughness of 0.63-0.75 μm (by turning) can be finished up to 0.11 μm (by burnishing) and improved micro hardness is obtained.

Sonepat is famous for bicycle manufacturing industry. The city faces the problem of contamination of ground water due to the release of industrial effluents on land and sludge dumped in and around the industry. Industrial effluents and the sludge on analysis of their pollution potential showed to be highly polluted. Studies on their influence on ground water quality reveal the presence of chromium and cyanide in ground water of polluted area above the permissible limits for drinking water standards. High BOD level has been observed in all the ground water samples from polluted area. It is interesting to note that the level of nickel water samples from polluted area was very low, although high concentration has been observed in effluents and sludge. Pollution control measures and strict enforcement of pollution control laws have been recommended.

Single electron tunneling circuits hole out the promise of being the successor to present day technilogies. Single electron devices are the attractive candidates for the post CMOS VLSI and hybrid ICs due to their unique principle of operation, quantized nature of carrier transport, ultra small size and low power dissipation. All these properties can be incorporated to realize fast switching, low power and less space consuming logic circuits. Multiplier circuits are proposed to realize using single electron circuits. Two different schemes: combinational logic based repetitive addition method and sequential logic dominated Booth's technique have been proposed. Each category of the multiplier circuit is proposed to realize separately with both the conventional logic circuit and binary decision diagram based single electron logic circuits substantiating the present schemes. Ist is found that the execution time of a particular multiplication by single electron device based circuit is significantly lesser compared to conventional logic based circuit. The single electron device based circuit is approximately three times faster than its conventional logic version (for repetitive addition scheme) whereas the same is approximately four times faster compared to conventional logic based Booth's technique.

Genetic Algorithms, a relatively new technique of optimization, is used for the optimum design of prestressed concrete beam. Prismatic unsymmetrical I-section girders, simply supported at the ends and subjected to a uniformly distributed load are considered for the optimum design. The total cost to be minimized includes the cost of high strengthconcrete, high tensile steel and a cost to reflect the cost associated with non-tensioned steel, anchorages, form, labour work, curing, testing etc. As a function of perimeter of the beam. The design problem is formulated as a non-linear mathematical programming problem to satisfy the specifications of IS:1343-1980. The effectiveness of the present method is proved by comparing it with sequential unconstrained minimization technique. Limited parametric studies have been carried out to highlight the influence of various parameters, such as cost coefficients, generation number, crossover probability and mutation probability, on the optimum cost.

A proportion of pre-acclimatized seed for carbonaceous matter degradaion with nitrifying biomass was taken in the reactor to explore compined removal pattern. The experimental results indicated 76% COD removal achieved corresponding to and initial value of 826.4 mg/L after 48 hr. About 70% of nitrification has been found after 24 hr of contact time for a relatively lower value of initial ammonia as 100 mg/L. The kinetic coefficient was also evaluated by linearised plotting which depicts the yield coefficient (Y) 0.614 and 0.195 for COD and nitrification, respectively.

To this end, finite element computation and depth-sensing micro indentation experiments using polymethyl methacrylate specimens are undertaken. The validity of viscoelastic indentation theories is assessed by comparing with the finite element and expeerimental results. Finally, the creep response function is extracted from the experimentally recorded indentation displacement histories and is compared with that obtained from a conventional mechanical test. It is shown that accurate characterization of viscoelastic responsed of materials is possible from depth-sensing identation, which has potential applications to components with small size scales such as thin films and biological tissues.

The effect of rolling resistance R on fuel consumption of radial passenger and truck tires in discussed. The model equation for the rolling loss R was directly proportional to tire load W (R α W) and inversely proportional to inflation pressure p (R α 1/p^x). These relationships were experimentally quantified. Using manufacturer's recommended values for load W and pressure p as reference points the R values for different overload conditions (from + 10 to + 100%) at constant p were estimated. Similarly, the required p values to support 10 to 50% additional load to maintain original R were also estimated. Then the estimated R values for different overload/inflation pressure conditions were combined with the fuel saving factor F (obtained from published literature results). Then the relative change in fuel consumption of truck/bus tires for different load/pressure combination vis-a-vis the fuel use for the manufacturer's recommended W and p values was evaluated. The analysis showed that for the same amount of fuel use a truck carrying a 100% overload and making one round trip would correspond to slightly more than two round trips by a truck of same size carrying the recommended load. Finally, and possible method of optimizing fuel use by adjusting the tire load/pressure conditions was suggested. All these estimates were obtained for radial tires. Feels that the same methodology is applicable for bias tires also.
