In general anodic gain boundaries, voids, inculusion and other stress concentration points, like dislocation, vacancies, etc. are the most preferential sites for metallic corrosion to take place. Incorporation of ultrafine ceramic particulates in lower concentration range, in metals and alloys, may be effective in the formation of a cathodic coverage on these anodic sites, such that the galvanic relationship between the anodic boundaries and other defects with the cathodic grain properties is somewhat reduced. This results in an effective reducion of the galvanically induced dissolution, from the surface of metals and alloys. Discusses all these aspects, in the light of thier roles in the improvement of their surface properties. The physico-chemical properties of the particulated Cu 6037> Zn 40% brass and polyaniline matrix, have been discussed, along with those of the ultrafine particulate reinforced copper-manganese class of marine alloys and nickel based metal-metalloid class of deposits on carbon-steel surface. Some correlations have also been made between the grain structure and the concentration of ultrafine particulates, stressing on their role in the reduction of surface corrosion including pitting. It is assumed that a particular metallic matrix has a quantified anodic sites, such that it can accommodate a critical amount of ultrafine particulates within these sites. It has been further observed that ultrafine boron carbide incorporated Cu60Zn40 matrix revealed very low leaching of both Cu and Zn - ions.

The ash ponds are the common disposal sites of ash generated from the thermal power stations. An attempt was taken to enrich the ash pond of Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd., Neyveli using organic amendments and microbial inoculants to promote crop growth. The oil seed crop gingelly (Sesamum indicum L.) was grown in two seasons and more growth and yield was recoded in the second crop, which was enriched in the second time also. The inoculation effect of the crop with VAM fungus Glomus mosseae and the acid tolerant Azospirillum isolate, A. lipoferum PAI - 1 was studied. The co-inoculation of Azospirillum with VAM enhanced the rhizosphere dehydrogenase enzyme activity, growth, yield, N and P content of the plant in the enriched ash pond.

The measurements of time integrated concentration of indoor randon and its daughters are important since indoor radon and its progeny is responsible for more than half of the total yearly radiation dose to human beings. Potential alpha energy concentrations (PAEC) due to radon progeny were measured in 40 rooms of different dwellings of Palampur city situated in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The region is known for soil, rich in natural uranium, Radon concentration measured by LR-115 type II detectors is found to vary from 59.5 to 133.2 Bq/m<>3 in bed rooms; from 61.3 to 110.3 Bq/m³ in living rooms; form 4.5 to 73.2 Bq/m³ in Varandahas and from 63.2 to 168.4 in kitchens. The effective dose equivalent received by the inhalation of radon progeny is found to vary from 1.6 to 6.4 mSv/year.

Scientific and environment friendly technologies for disposing the waste will reduce quantity of waste to be finally dumped besides generating substantial amount of manure and energy. In order to streamline the system based on preliminary studies, conducted on Jalandhar, it has been concluded the landfill gas technology is a vialable option for a city similar in nature to Jalandhar.

The ground water quality of district Dehradun in the State of Uttaranchal (India) has been assessed to examine the suitability of ground water for irrigation applications. Forty ground water samples (including 15 spring samples) were collected during per and post-monsoon seasons during 2002 and analysed for various water quality constituents. The suitability of ground water for irrigation purpose has been evaluated based on salinity, Sodium Adsorption ration (SAR), Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC) and boron content. In general the ground water of the region is safe for irrigation purposes. According to U.S.Salinity Laboratory classification of irrigation water, about 65% of the samples fall under water type C2-SI, such water can be safely used if an moderate amount of leaching occurs and plants with moderate salt tolerance can be grown in most cases without special practices for salinity control. About 15% samples fall under water type C1-S1 and 15% under water type C3-S1. The C3-S1 type water cannot be used on soils with restricted drainage. Even with adequate drainage special management for salinity control may be required and plants with good tolerance should be selected.

Frequency of shedding vortices in the wake of a bluff body is used to measure the flow rate in vortex flowmeters. A smooth bluf body shape may not generate stable vortices and needs sharp edges for the consistency of pulsed output. However, such bluff bodies give higher-pressure loss and drag force and therefore a need exists for optimising the body shape. In the work, the flow over various body shapes in a pipe have been analysed using computational fluid dynamics to study the effect of body shape on pressure loss and drag coefficient. It is observed that the body shape with sharp corners have higher-pressure loss and drag compared to the cylindrical one. However, a triangular body shape with splitter plate or diamond shape has low coefficients of permanent pressure loss and drags compared to the other sharp cornered bodies and hence are better suited for use in the vortex flowmeters.

Conveyor belts are required to transport different types of materials in industries under varying operating conditions. A number of materials for such belts are available in the market. However, it is impossible to identify one such material, which will perfectly respond to all such requirements in a given environment. Hence arises the question of optimization. The paper is based on one such optimizating technique known as analytic hierarchy process (AHP). It considers a number of alternative materials as well as design criterial and arrives at the most suitable material. The algorithm calculates the priority vector (PV) values by eigen-vector method of pair-wise comparison. These PV values are calculated through an interative process, and are accepted if the concerned matrices yield consistency ratios (CR) below a specific limit. Finally, composite priority (CP) values are calculated, and the alternatives are ranked according to their CP values. The algorithm is coded in FORTRAN language. The program is general, and can be used to handle smaller or larger number of criteria and alternatives as well.

In turn the nonionizing electromagnetic field interactions with biological systems have become important for it gives rise to a variety of phenomena which at times seem to be beyond the purview of the known laws of physics. The probable reasons are that there are so many uncontrollable parameters that need to be accounted for. The effects are broadly divided into two parts: thermal and non thermal. The dividing line between the two, though marked is now being questioned for its validity. On the top of this no such line is drawn for modulated fields and extremely low frequency field, where the bulk of data are now emerging. Inelastic response of an Equivalent Single Degree of Freedom (ESDOF) system under the excitation of two sets of earthquake records is evaluated. The ESDOF system is subjected to nine actually recorded earthquakes and to nine synthetic records representative of the range of dominant site conditions. The relationship between the force modification factor and the global ductility demand under the excitation of both sets of records is found to be highly correlated. On the average and from the statistical point of view, synthetic records tend to be on the conservative side. Response of the ESDOF to synthetic earthquake records has proved to exhibit levels of randomness and dispersion well comparable to actual records. Properly generated synthetic records, may be confidently used as substitute of actual records for practical engineering purposes.
