The parity between production costs of ring and rotor yarn is reached around 8-tex. The comparison is based on the rotor speed of 90,000 rpm and ring spindle speed of 16,000 rpm. Studies also show that low strength of rotor yarn does not translate into poor weaving performance in fine counts. Because of rotor yarns better uniformity than ring yarn, rotor yarns gave an equal weaving performance of ring yarns. In Europe, rotor spinning machines have been used for a wide range of yarns counts and wide range of end uses, every thing from denim to find cloth of blouses and shirts. The worldwide share of different fibres in rotor spinning clearly establishes the manufacture of blended textiles in rotor spinning. However in India, still rotor spinning has not been exploited for spinning fine counts and blended textiles. One of the reasons may be due to excess availability of ring spindles and limited availability of rotors, rotor spinning has not been used for the fine counts, when adequate number of rotors are available, rotor spinning will enter into medium and find counts.

Discusses two specific case studies respectively in the field of thermal spraying and plasma spraying. It appears that thermally sprayed aluminium surface may be made resistant to corrosion by increase of layer thickness, but, plasma sprayed coating does not respond to that extent, as a result of increase of layer thickness.

The corresponding methyl and ethyl ethers are prepared likewise by replacing water in the reaction mixture with methanol and ethanol respectively. While the methyl ethers are obtained in 75-80 per cent yield, the ethyl ethers are accompanied by the corresponding alcohols in equal proportion, in overall yield of 60-75 per cent.

Microemulsion (M E) and conventional emulsion (C E) copolymerizations of the monomer pairs, methyl methacrylate (MMA)/acrylonitrile (AN) and methyl methacrylate (MMA)/styrene (STY), are carried out at 70°C with five different compositions of these monomer pairs in the initial reaction mixtures. Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), n-hexanol (HA) and potassium persulphate (KPS) are employed as surfactant, cosurfactant and free radical initiator, respectively. FTIR, HNMR, TG/DTA, GC, and GPC techniques are employed to characterize these copolymers. Kelen-Tudos (K-L) method is employed to evaluate the reactivity ratios for M E and C E copolymerizations of the monomer pairs, MMA/AN and MMA/STY, in the study. The K-T method yields the reativity ratios, rMMA and rAN, for M E copolymerization of MMA/AN as 2.50 ± 0.02 and 0.30 ± 0.02, respectively, and rMMA and rAN for the C E copolymerization of MMA/AN are obtained as 1.60 ± 0.02 and 0.30 ± 0.02, respectively. The rMMA and rSTY for the M.E. copolymerization of MMA/STY are obtained from K-T method as 0.45 ± 0.02 and 0.65 ± 0.02, respectively, and the rMMA and rSTY for the C E copolymerization of MMA/STY are obtained as 0.74 ± 0.02 and 0.79 ± 0.02, respectively.

Whole seed Sunflower cake, partially dehulled cake, completely dehulled cake flours and their protein isolates were utilised in the preparation of biscuits and other Indian food items pakodi and chapathi. Different grades of sunflower cake added at 10% level enhanced the protein content of the snack items from 11-21 g/100g (control) to 13-24 g/100g. Protein isolate added at 5% level increased the protein content of food items to 14.5-25 g from that of control. At 10% level the protein content was around 17.8-28.9g/100g. Taste panel acceptability was 50-90% for the protein biscuits and snack foods as against 100% for the control. There is a good scope for utilisation of sunflower cakes and protein isolates as food ingredients in view of their higher protein content and acceptability.

Cashewnut shell liquid (CNSL), a potential natural source for monomers, cannot even today be said to have found its niche in terms of an appropriate industrial application. Recent investigations, however, have revealed that the constitutents of CNSL possess special structural features which can be chemically transformed into speciality and high value products/polymers. Simple chemical modifications such as introducing phosphorus and/or bromine gave a series of multi-purpose resins and processes for use as flame retardants (FRs), adhesives, matrix resins for brake linings and composites, etc. Thus, phosphorylated CNSL prepolymer (Anorin-35), a multi-purpose resin with a lap shear strength of about 400 N/Cm² can be used as a bonding agent for plywood and matrix resin for brake linings. A fully brominated CNSL product (Anorin-53) was found to impart self extinguishing flame retardant (FR) behaviour to EVA based cable so that low smoke FR grade material was obtained. As the dark brown colour of CNSL and its products restricted their use in surface coatings, a transparent resin, poly (cardanyl acrylate) (PCA) was prepared by introducing free radically polymerizable moieties. PCA can be blended with various pigments to produce CNSL surface coatings of any colour. Aqueous CNSL resins such as stabilized Anorin-35 in water were found to give properties to replace aqueous phenol-formaldehyde resins/vinyl resins in plywood bonding...

It is argued that oxygen in OH^--ions, in presence of photonic fluxes, motivate the OH^- ions to interact with each other electrocatalytically, forming H₂O₂ on selective metallic sites and the peroxides formed performs the function of a convenient surface oxidizers. It is further argued that in ambient air corrosion, the peroxides may be effective during the formative stages of surface deterioration, where energy barriers are to be crossed. The hypothesis has been supported by a set of experimental test results.

Transparent gas barriers are receiving considerable attention in the plastics industry for roll coating applications. The three principal vacuum deposition processes, evaporation, sputtering and plasma processing are the focus of transparent gas barrier work at various converters, resin producers and equipment manufacturers. Evaporation produces coatings at very high rates, but plasma processing has reported the best gas barrier results to date [<60>0.06 cc/100 in²/day for single-sided coatings on 0.5 mil polyethylene terephthalate (PET)]. Sputtering rates are lower than evaporation rates, but can produce a wide range of transparent oxides including the material of interest, silica. Evaporated, sputtered and plasma deposited coatings were produced and compared in terms of oxygen gas transmission and film stoichiometry. The plasma deposited coatings provided the best gas barriers and initial results show that the plasma processed barrier coatings are commercially feasible.

Gas diffusion properties of transparent thin film coatings have been under investigation by a number of investigator for application in food and medical packaging. Work on the oxygen permeation properties of high barrier film coatings is reviewed, with emphasis on the coating thickness dependence of the oxygen permeation properties of evaporated, sputtered, and plasma-deposited transparent oxide and organic coatings suggests that the reduction in permeation due to the coatings is limited by transport through coating defects (e.g., pinholes, grain boundaries, or microcracks). The usefulness of such measurements as a probe of coating microstructure is assessed by reviewing structural and permeation investigations of metallized coatings on polymers.

Sterile palm sap samples fermented by pure culture of individual palm wine yeasts and bacteria were analysed by Gas chromatography, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectometry and sensory evaluation, to determine the role of these microorganisms in palm wine aroma. Palm wine volatiles and aroma were reproduced in yeast-fermented saps, while bacteria-fermented ones tended to retain the volatiles would be critical to palm wine odour. It was concluded that these organisms should, therefore, constitute important components of any standard inoculum for palm win and its analogues.

In view of discrepancies in the available information on the hardness of lithium niobate, a systematic study of the hardness has been carried out. Measurements have been made on two pure lithium niobate crystals with different growth origins, and a Fe-doped sample. The problem of load variation of hardness is examined in detail. The true hardness of LiNbO3 is found to be 630 ± 30 kg/mm². The Fe-doped crystal has a larger hardness of 750 ± 50 kg/mm².

An alloy containing Pb-12% Sn-12% Sb small addition of copper and arsenic was spray deposited employing two different atomization gas pressure and nozzle to substrate distances. The temperature of the spray-deposit was measured during deposition at a distance of 2 and 10 mm above the substrate-deposit interface. Thermal profile data indicated small variation in temperature with time during deposition stage whereas during post deposition stage an exponential decrease in temperature was recorded. Second phase particle size along the thickness of the deposit varied from 4 to 8 μm compared to 70 to 80 (F128><109>m size of these particles in the as cast alloy. Maximum porosity occurred in the section of the deposit near the contact surface of the substrate and also in its peripheral regions. X-ray diffraction analysis exhibited the formation of additional Cu2Sb phase in the spray-deposit and CuSn and Cu3.3Sb phases in atomized powders compared to that of the as cast alloy. The microstructural evolution during spray deposition of this alloy is discussed.

Pigeonpea grains, variety `UPAs-120', were given different pre-treatments (water soaking, water spray, oil treatments, sodium bicarbonate treatment and enzyme treatment) and the changes in protein content both in cotyledon (manually dehulled) and finished product (dhal) were assessed. All the pre-milling treatments except sodium bicarbonate treatment caused significant loss in protein content in cotyledon over untreated sample. Oil treatment resulted in maximal loss (3.18%). Protein contents of dhal ranged from 20.71% to 22.45%; maximum being in enzyme-treated sample and minimum in oil-treated sample.

There losses were 23.61, 14.46, 21.28, 33.06 and 35.15% for thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin B6, folic acid and vitamin C, respectively. During storage of khoa for 24 h at room temperature, a general decrease in water-soluble vitamins was observed. The losses in vitamin B2 and vitamin C in khoa stored under light were 16.35 and 8.16%, respectively. The corresponding values for khoa stored under darkness were 1.37 and 4.28%.
