Twelve dietary treatments employing groundnut cake (GNC), soybean meal (SBM) single or in combination with two vegetable protein mixtures (VPMA)=37.5% Mustard cake+37.5% Til cake+12.5% Cottonseed cake+12.5% Autoclaved linseed meal; VPMB=33.33% GNC+33.33% SBM+33.33% VPMA) and with or without supplemental lysine and methionine were evaluated with thirty six groups of eight broiler chicks each from 1.42 d of age. Results on body growth, feed efficiency and nutrient utilization indicated that the vegetable protein combinations such as GNC or VPMA replacing 50% SBM-N, lysine and methionine added PMA-N in lieu of total SHM-N, lysine and methionine supplemented diet with 50% GNC-N replaced by VPMA-N and VPMB-N replacing total SHM-N were utilized well for optimum performance by broiler chickens, besides GNC or SBM as sole vegetable protein.

Poultry viscera meal in place of fish meal at 5 and 8 per cent level was used in rabbit feed pellets with an objective of its effect on nutritional quality of pellets, growth performance and feed conversion ratio (FCR) in New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits. It was observed that per cent protein and fat content of pellets with 8 per cent viscera meal were significantly (P≤0.05) higher (22.72±)0.56 and 4.54±0.09) than control (20.56±0.58 and 3.68±0.11, respectively. The growth recorded was significantly (P<60>0.05) higher in Group III (8% fish meal replacement) from the control (Group I) but not from group II (5% fish meal replacement). The FCR was also significantly (P≤0.05) better in Group II and Group III when compared to the control group. Indicated that standard rabbit feed pellets could be prepared by using poultry viscera meal in place of fish meal upto 8 per cent level with better results.

Spray deposition of a commercial hypereutectic Al-Si alloy under various processing conditions has been investigated. The microstructure and wear properties of the alloy produced by spray deposition process are compared with those produced by conventional casting method. The microstructure of the spray deposited material showed considerable refinement of the primary Si phase and modification of its eutectic morphology. The primary Si phase varied from 2 5 μm in spray deposits against 70 to 130 μm in that of the as cast alloy. Electron Probe Microanalysis indicated considerable chemical homogeneity in the spray deposited alloy. In constrast, large segregation of alloying elements were observed in the as cast alloy. The results of X-ray diffraction analysis showed variation in lattice parameter of oversprayed powders as a function of their particle size indicating difference in cooling rate during solidification of droplets. The alloy produced by spray casting revealed its relatively low wear rate compared to that of the as cast alloy under a range of applied load from 6-10 kg and sliding velocity from 0.3-1.5 ms^-1. This behavior is discussed in the light of microstructural features produced during spray casting.

Fractorial design methods have been applied for optimizing the roasting condition to convert vanadium present in the vanadiferous titano magnetic ores to sodium vanadate. The different factors such as time, temperature of roasting and percentage of sodium sulphate addition were varied simultaneously unlike the conventional methods. However, these were based on the base level data obtained from routine laboratory experiments. Standard methods were applied to calculate variance, Fischer ratio and the Chi square tests. The upper and lower levels were determined and a few experiments were conducted to optimize the recovery.

Nickel extraction studies were carried out using Acorga P-5300 extractant. Various extraction parameters were studied such as pH, concentration of ammonium salt and common anion. Nickel extraction was observed to be more favourable in chloride medium than in sulphate or nitrate media. The increase of ammonium salt concentration results in the shift of pH0.5 to higher values due to formation of outer sphere complex. Stripping conditions were also optimised.
