River Tambraparni forms an estuary at Punnakayal along the Bay of Bengal. Surface sediment samples analysed by standard methods, have indicated high organic pollution levels especially around Zone I with fine sediments (Clay: 21.6% and 18.36%) both during the premonsoon as well as post-monsoon seasons (Organic carbon 1.28% and 1.54%). The minor and trace elements have also recorded higher values in this region where an industrial complex is situated (Mn: 720 and 519 ppm, Hg: 52.75 and 48.28 ppm, Cd: 13.6 and 1.5 ppm, Zn: 218.4 and 2.22 ppm, Pb: 30.3 and 27 ppm). The Geo accumulation indices of certain trace metals are found at alarmingly high levels (Hg: Zn: Cd = 9.24, 0.45 and 4.54 pre-monsoon). However, sequential extraction studies have indicated that most of the trace elements remain only as sedimentary and not released to the water column.

The use of herbicides has intensively increased mainly due to their massive pollution of the soil and environment. As these herbicides are directly or indirectly toxic to a wide range of organisms, their potential for contaminating soil, surface water and groundwater makes these xenobiotics of special interest from a health and environmental point of view. The sum of total energy (E_T), NBO charge on atoms, dipole moment, differences between HOMO and LUMO and geometrical parameters are calculated for difenoxuron (Dif), diuron (Diu), linuron (L) and metoxuron (M), at B3LYP/6-311++G (3df,2p) level of theory. Among these herbicides, linuron (L) is more effective and powerful, whereas metoxuron is the least effective herbicide. The highest HOMO-LUMO gap for L shows their high stability among these herbicides.

A series of some novel 2,4-diaryl-3,5-bis(arylimino)-1,2,4-thiadiazolidine derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity. In the SAR study, the phenyl ring on 3 and 4 position of 1,2,4-thiadiazolidine ring substituted with chloro, nitro and methoxy groups showed better activity. The title compounds were synthesized from two steps; the first step involved the synthesis of diaryl substituted thioureas then, it was cyclised to give the 1,2,4-thiadiazole system in the presence of oxidizing agent (hydrogen peroxide and concentrated hydrochloric acid) in the second step. The purity of the synthesized compounds were judged by their C, H and N analysis and the structure was analyzed on the basis of IR, H¹NMR, C¹³ NMR and Mass spectral data. The anti-inflammatory activity of new compounds was determined by λ-Carrageenan induced mice paw edema method using diclofenac sodium as a standard. Among the compounds tested four compounds, B2 (2,4-diphenyl-3,5-bis(3-nitrophenylimino)-1,2,4-thiadiazolidine), B4 (2,4-diphenyl-3,5-bis(3-chlorophenylimino)-1,2,4-thiadiazolidine), B6 (2,4-diphenyl-3,5-bis(4-methoxyphenylimino)- 1,2,4-thiadiazolidine) and B7 (2,4-diphenyl-3,5-bis (2-methoxyphenylimino)- 1,2,4-thiadiazolidine) were the most active compounds in these series.

The influence of substrates, oxidant, H⁺ ions, ionic strength and dielectric constant on the reaction rates at various temperatures was studied. The stoichiometry is 1:1 and the product of oxidation is the corresponding ketone. Activation energies and related thermodynamic parameters have been calculated and the plausible mechanism for oxidation reaction is discussed.

2:1 Zinc complex monoazo acid dyes have been prepared. Six commercially available Omega Chrome dyes and other three dyes based on 1-amino-2-naphthol-6-sulphonic acid and the couplers 1-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid, 2-naphthol and 2-naphthol-6-sulphonic acid were used in preparing the complexes. All these dyes were analyzed using atomic absorption spectra and thin layer chromotogrphy. The dyeing of wool fabric was carried with these dyes and their antibacterial activity of dyed fabric was assessed. Dyeings using zinc complexed dyes showed prominent antibacterial activity. The performance properties such as wash fastness, fastness to dry cleaning and light fastness were also measured Intense colour value was obtained for all the dyes synthesized. Very good fastness to washing and dry cleaning has also been observed, where as light fastness of the deyings was of moderate to good degree.

The impact of sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) on the protonation equilibria of L-aspartic acid, citric acid and succinic acid has been studied in various concentrations (0.5-2.5% w/v) of SLS solution maintaining an ionic strength of 0.16 mol dm^-3 at 303 K. The protonation constants have been calculated with the computer program MINIQUAD75 and the best fit models have been calculated based on statistical parameters. The trend of log values of step-wise protonation constants with mole fraction of the medium has been explained based on electrostatic and non-electrostatic forces operating on the protonation equilibria. The effects of errors on the protonation constants have also been presented.

The complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2₁/a with a minimal tetrahedral distortion of the ZnCl₄^2- ion, a = 7.448(1) Angustrum, b = 38.486(3) A, c = 8.298(1) Angustrum, β = 112.52(1) °, V = 2197.4(4) Angustrum³ and Z = 4. The crystal structure was solved and refined to R = 0.047 with 3270 independent reflections. It can be described by inorganic layers of [ZnCl₄.(H₂O)₂]^2- parallel to (010) plane, between which the 2,6-xylidinium cations are located. The grouping is maintained by different types of interactions (electrostatic, H-bonds, Van der Walls and π-π stacking). A characterization of this compound by thermal analysis and IR spectro-scopy are also reported.

The protocol of rapid identification system consists of three chemical color reactions; two group tests for fluoroquinolone class and a compound specific test each for norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, gatifloxacin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin and sparfloxacin. The group color reactions are based on (a) Oxidizing behavior of quinolone and (b) Fluorine functional groups, both of which are characteristic of fluoroquinolone class. The compound specific color reactions are developed taking into consideration unique chemical behavior of each compound. The proposed chemical color tests have high selectivity/specificity, are ideal for screening purpose. The color of each test was defined by two standard color systems namely CIE lab and Munsell color. A suspected counterfeit tablet of any of the above mentioned drugs can be identified within 10-15 min using this rapid identification system.

The kinetics of iridium(III) catalyzed oxidation of D-mannose by potassium bromate in aqueous perchloric acid medium has been studied. The reaction rate shows first-order dependence on KBrO₃ and Ir(III). Zero-order kinetics with respect to D-mannose, negative effect to the medium i.e. [H⁺]. There is insignificant effect of ionic strength (μ), (P.T.S.) and KCl, Hg(OAc)₂ on the reaction rate. Elevation of temperature increases the rate of reaction in oxidation of reducing sugar. The activation parameters have been calculated. Mechanism consistent with the above kinetic results has been suggested.

In this study, AM1 semi-empirical calculations are used to investigate the structure and hydrogen bonding with nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen in N-H group containing in these compounds.

Microwave-assisted organic reaction enhancement (MORE) has emerged as a new 'lead' in organic synthesis. The technique offers simple, clean, fast, efficient, economic and environment friendly method for the synthesis of a large number of organic molecules. During studies, the conventional synthesis of N-phenyl-3-(substituted phenyl) propenamides required a longer reaction time (12-16 h) and the yields were often poor (36.9-46.6%). Hence, application of microwave technique for synthesis of the title compounds with an objective to reduce reaction time and increase yield was explored. Using microwave irradiation, all the reactions could be completed in very short duration (4-7 min) with considerable increase in the yields (53.2-79.8%). All the synthesized compounds were evaluated for their anti fungal activity against three different strains of Candida albicans. The minimum inhibitory concentration was found to be ranging between 12.5-19 jug/ml.

Studies were carried out, for the first time, to investigate the charge-transfer reactions of Pregabalin (PRE) as n-electron donor with various π-acceptors: 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ), 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ), 2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (chloranilic acid, pCA), tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) and 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (chloranil). Different colored charge-transfer complexes and radical anions were obtained. Different variables affecting the reactions were studied and optimized. The formations of the colored complexes were utilized in the development of simple, rapid and accurate spectrophotometric methods for the analysis of PRE in pure form as well as in its pharmaceutical preparation. Under the optimum reaction conditions, linear relationships with good correlation coefficients (0.9995-0.9999) were found between the absorbance and the concentrations of PRE in the range of 8-400 μg mL^-1. The limits of assays detection ranged from 0.60 to 8.11 μg mL^-1. No interference could be observed from the additives commonly present in the capsules. The methods were successfully applied to the analysis of capsules that contain PRE, with good accuracy and precision; the recovery percentages ranged from 100.19±0.83 to 100.50±0.53. The results were compared favorably with the reported method.

Minor quantities of Ketol and Michael addition product were easily removed by recrystallization. The results indicated were correlated with solvent-free synthesis. The compounds have also been screened for their anti-fungal activities.

The effect of different factors, such as current density (CD) and annealing temperatures, on cathode current efficiency (CCE), microhardness and quality of electrodeposited nickel which obtained from a bath containing 0.2 M nickel sulphate and 0.2 M boric acid as electrolyte and buffer respectively in a glycol-water mixture, was investigated. Bright and adherent nickel deposits with high CCE were produced at a CD of 2.0 Adm^-2 and 30°C. The microhardness of the deposits decreased with increasing annealing temperature. The structural features of the deposits were examined by SEM and TEM. The results have been explained by taking into account the hydrogen content in the deposits.

Effects of phenols on the corrosion of mild steel in various concentrations of nitric acid have been evaluated. Per cent loss in weight was found increase linearly with increase in acid concentration. Among the phenols used, p-cresol appears to be good inhibitor followed by m-cresol and phenol. 2-Nitro phenol reveals its oxidizing nature as indicated by increased loss in weight when compared with control. In case of naphthols; 2-naphthol seems to be more effective inhibitor as compared to 1-naphthol. An e.m.f. measurements in nitric acid media indicated that they are inversely related to corresponding weight losses. The trend observed in I.E. values is in the order as p-cresol > m-cresol > 2-naphthol > phenol > 1-naphthol > 2-nitro phenol.

Ab initio molecular orbital methods at the CBSEQ level of theory have been used to study the structure and acidity of formic and silanoic acids derivatives in aqueous solution. The calculations are performed at the SCF level with inclusion of SCF-level thermochemical corrections to yield free energies of dissociation, using the basis sets 6-31 G** and the recently parametrized continuum-solvation method PCM-UAHF for the solvation contribution. The model furnishes pK_a values in relatively good agreement with experimental data. Scaling different parts of solvation energies provides a significant improvement in results and signifies the importance of balance of individual contributions from electrostatic, cavity, dispersion and repulsion interactions. The result shows that the investigated acids are weak and for C-acids the acidity increases in the order: CCl₃COOH > FCOOH > CHCl₂COOH > CH₂ClCOOH > HCOOH > NO₂COOH > CH₃COOH > NH₂COOH > BrCOOH > ClCOOH; their Si-acidity order is: CCl₃SiOOH > CHCl₂SiOOH > FSiOOH > CISiOOH > HSiOOH > BrSiOOH > CHClSiOOH > CH₃SiOOH > NO₂SiOOH > NH₂SiOOH.

Amperometric determinations of Co(II) and Ni(II) have been carried out successfully with the help of thioglycolic acid (TGA) at d.m.e. in 0.1 M NH₃ + 0.1 M NH₄C1 supporting electrolyte. Metal species-TGA molar stoichiometric ratios of 1:1 for Ni(II) and 1:2 for Co(II) have been obtained using metal ions solutions as titrant (anodic titrations). Both methods seem to be the consequence of complexation reaction between the acid and the respective metal ions. Solutions as dilute as 5.86 ppm [Ni(II)] and 2.94 ppm [Co(II)] have been estimated with high degree of accuracy. Tolerance limits for foreign ions have also been worked out.

Condensation of thiourea with diethyl malonate under microwave heating in the presence of sodium methoxide furnished 4,6-dihydroxy-2-mercaptopyrimidine. Methylation with diazomethane followed by oxidation with H₅IO₆ / CrO₃ in ethyl acetate gave 4,6-dimethoxy-2-methylsulphonylpyrimidine. The latter on condensation with 2-mercapto-6-chlorobenzoic acid in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst, tetra butyl ammonium bromide and sodium carbonate gave the title compound with an overall yield of > 42% starting from thiourea. Standardized this method for the synthesis of °C labeled sodium 2-chloro-6-(4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinylthio) benzoate, for further evaluations of environmental fate of this compound, in soils and plants.

Nickel(II) complexes of the type [Ni(N₃)2(X)₃]₂, where X = pyridine/2-picoline/3-picoline/4-picoline have been prepared and characterized on the basis of physico-chemical methods. The magnetic susceptibility data reveals that the complexes are high spin and six-coordinate with octahedral geometry. The spectroscopic data of these complexes show that they exist in the form of dimers with distorted octahedral structure. The analytical, magnetic moment and spectral data along with the geometry of nickel(II) complexes are discussed in the paper. The green coloured nickel(II) complexes correspond to the dimeric formulae: [Ni(N₃)₂ (py)₃]₂, [Ni(N₃)₂(2-pic)₃]₂, [Ni(N₃)₂(3-pic)₃]₂ and [Ni(N₃)₂(4-pic)₃]₂.

Later the compound (2) was condensed with different substituted aryl aldehydes to yield 11 new Schiff bases (3a-3k) of this series and in second series the compound (2) was reacted with freshly prepared acid chlorides to form 4 new title compounds (31-3p). All the 15 compounds were characterized by spectral data and were screened for antibacterial activity. Some of the compounds exhibited promising activity.

The resulting 5-[1(H)-benzo triazole methylene]-8-quinolinol (BTMQ) was characterized by elemental analysis and spectral studies. The transition metal chelates viz. Cu²⁺, Ni²⁺, Co³⁺, Mn²⁺ and Zn²⁺ of BTMQ were prepared and characterized by metal-ligand (M:L) ratio, IR and reflectance spectral studies and magnetic properties. The antifungal activity of BTMQ and its metal chelates was screened against various fungi. The results show that all these samples are good antifungal agents.

Halogenobenzoates are commonly applied in industrial and medical fields. Four novel mixed ligand complexes of Co(II) with p-florobenzoate, p-chlorobenzoate, p-bromobenzoate, p-iodobenzoate and N,N-diethylnicotinamide were synthesized and characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopic study, solid state UV-Vis spectrometric and magnetic susceptibility data. The thermal behaviour of the complexes was studied by simultaneous TG-DTA methods in static air atmosphere and the mass spectra data are recorded. According to the microanlytical results, formulae of complexes are C₃₄H₃₆N₄O₈FCo, C₃₄H₃₄N₄O₈ClCo, C₃₄H₃₆N₄O₈BrCo and C₃₄H₃₆N₄O₈ICo. The complexes contain two mole of coordination waters, two mole of p-halogenobenzoate and two mole of N,N-diethylnicotinamide (dena) ligands per formula unit. In these complexes, the p-halogenobenzoate and N,N-diethylnicotin-amide behave as monodentate ligand through acidic oxygen and nitrogen of pyridine ring. The decomposition pathways and the stability of the complexes are interpreted in the terms of the structural data. The final decomposition products were found to be the CoO.

Aims was to find out reflection of dietary zinc to that of serum and hair zinc contents. Forty volunteers' students of Nigde University (24 females and 16 males) participated in the first step of research. Three years later, 17 females and 10 males from this group participated for the second stage of research. Students nutritional status was evaluated according to their food consumption and physical examination. After analyzing the collected blood and hair samples, the mineral status was also evaluated. At the two steps of research no one had any serious mineral and other nutrients deficiencies. Only one female student having mineral deficiency at the first step of work recovered after the treatment. Regression analysis showed that there was a statistically significant correlation between dietary zinc concentration and hair and serum mineral levels (r_diet.hair = 0.500, n = 40, p < 0.01, r_diet-serum = 0.470, n = 40, p < 0.01).

Uvaria chamae P. Beauv and Clerodendron splendens A Cheval are known to have various medicinal and therapeutic properties. Their anti-inflammatory and oxytocic properties were assessed in the study. The extracts and aspirin were found to inhibit carrageenan-induced paw oedema on albino rats and mice with a strong activity in aspirin having (80.43%) inhibition while U. chamae and C. splendens have 69.57% and 47.83% inhibition respectively. The plants extract exhibition and uterine contraction activity on guinea pig. Phytochemical studies on the plants revealed the presence of bioactive components comprising flavonoids (0.70 - 5.70 mg. 100 g^-1), alkaloids (0.81-5.40 mg. 100 g^-1), tannins (0.40 - 3.60 mg. 100 g^-1), saponins (0.38 - 2.10 mg. 100 g^-1) and phenols (0.08 - 0.10 mg. 100 g^-1). These bioactive compounds may be responsible for the medicinal properties of U. chaemae and C. splendens that form the basis of their use in herbal medicine in Nigeria.

The interaction of acridine orange (AO) with heparin was studied by voltammetric method. In Britton-Robinson (B-R) buffer solution (pH 2.3), AO showed a sensitive linear sweep voltammetric reductive peak at -0.94 V (vs. SCE). The addition of heparin into the AO solution caused a decrease in the reductive peak current without any change in the peak potential. The results indicated that a reaction occurred between the positively charged AO and the negatively charged heparin, which led to the decrease of the free AO concentration and subsequent decrease of the reductive peak current of AO. Under the optimal conditions, the decrease of reductive peak current of AO was proportional to heparin concentration in the range of 0.8-6.0 mg L^-1 and the data reductive peak current were correlated as Δip"(nA)=807.58 C (mg L^-1)-542.51 (n=10, correlation coefficient γ=0.995) and the detection limit was calculated as 0.13 mg L^-1(3 S₀/S). The new method was successfully applied to the determination of heparin content in heparin sodium injection samples with satisfactory results and good recovery. The interaction of the reactants was also confirmed by UV-Vis absorption spectrophotometric experiments.

2-Hydroxy-4-n-propoxy-5-bromoacetophenone oxime (HnPBAO) was developed as a new analytical reagent for the gravimetric determination of pentavalent vanadium ion. In the pH range 4.0-6.0, the reagent gave a brown coloured precipitate with V(V). Job's method and Mole ratio method revealed that the stoichiometry of the complex is 1:1 (metal: ligand). Beer's law is obeyed up to 20.38 ppm of V(V). Molar absorptivity and Sandells sensitivity at 450 nm were found to be 10.22 x 10² L/mol/cm and 0.049 μg/cm² respectively. The stability constant of V(V)-HnPBAO complex is found to be 1.195 X 10⁶. Gibb's free energy change for complex formation reaction was found to be -8.34 kcal/mol. The reagent can be used for the analysis of vanadium in ferro-vanadium alloys.

A process was developed to recover boron from the waste stream of liquid crystal display (LCD) industry using 2,2,4-trimethyl-l,3-pentanediol dissolved in carbon tetrachloride as an extractant. Several parameters such as contact time, boron concentration in the aqueous phase, extractant concentration, equilibrium pH and phase ratio were studied for process optimization. Equilibrium conditions for boron recovery were optimized from the batch test results as: 2 stages of extraction and 2 stages of stripping with an organic: aqueous (O:A) ratio of 1. Maximum boron extraction was achieved at a pH range of 1.0 - 6.0. Overall 95.6% boron recovery was achieved under the best experimental conditions.

The concentration activities of ²²⁶Ra and ²²⁸Ra were determined at ten stations around Pulau Redang, Malaysia, where high dissolved activity of ²²⁸Ra was found at the coastal stations. Meanwhile, activities of ²²⁶Ra and ²²⁸Ra isotopes in the suspended materials were slightly similar with ^{228Ra/226Ra ratio ranged from 0.88-1.86. High distribution coefficient (K_d) of radium isotopes found around Pulau Redang indicating that radium are strongly absorbed onto paniculate phase. The K_d values of 226Ra and 228Ra were ranged from 0.78 x 105 L g-1 to 5.56 x 105 L g-1 and from 0.21 x 105 L g-1 to 1.86 x 105 L g-1, respectively. The impact caused by the amount of suspended particle material (< 10 mg L-1) on the particle concentration was not found during this study.}

Transition metal(II) complexes of the type ML₁ [where M = Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II), L₁ = Schiff base derived from 5-nitro salicy-laldehyde and p-anisidine] have been prepared characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductivity, IR, electronic spectra, magnetic susceptibility studies and X-ray diffraction spectra. Molar conductivity measurements indicate that the complexes are non-electrolytic in nature. The analytical data indicates that the metal to ligand ratio in all the complexes is [1:2]. IR spectral data suggests that the ligand behaves as a bidentate O, N donar system. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicates paramagnetic behaviour of all the complexes except Zn-complex. X-ray diffraction studies suggests monoclinic crystal system for these complexes.

The kinetics of oxichition of metochlopramide hydrodiloride (MCP) with sodium N-chloro p-toluenesulfonamide (CAT) in perchloric acid solution has been studied at 313K. The reaction rate shows a first order dependence on [CAT], fractional order on [MCP] and inverse fractional order on [H⁺]. There is a negative effect of dielectric constant of the solvent. The addition of the reduction product of CAT has no significant effect on the rate. The rate remained unchanged with the variation in the ionic strength of the medium. The reaction fails to induce the polymerization of acrylonitrile. Thermodynamic parameters have been computed by Arrhenius plot. The stoichiometry of the reaction was found to be 1:2 and oxidation products were identified. The Michaelis-Menten type of kinetics has been proposed. CH₃C₆H₄SO₂NHC1 have been assumed to be the reactive oxidizing species. Thermodynamic parameters were computed by studying reactions at different temperatures. A mechanism consistent with observed kinetics is proposed.

Some substituted Schiff bases viz., cyano acetyl benzalidene hydra-zone (CABH), cyano-acetyl salicylidene hydrazone (CASH) and cyanoacetyl 3:5 diiodo salicylidene hydrazone (CAISH) have been synthesized and the effect of substitution in the ligand molecule on stabilities of Cu(II) complexes has been studied. The metal ligand ratio was found to be 1:1 conductometrically following job's method. The stabilities of the complexes have been determined by Bjerrum-Calvin pH titration technique. The log k_H values of these ligands were found to be 9.24 (CABH), 9,10 (CASH) and 10.15 (CAISH). The order of stabilities of Cu(II) complexes with these ligands has been found to be Cu-CABH > Cu-CASH > Cu-CAISH which has been explained on the basis of π electron delocalization possible in the ligand molecules.

Current multiple tube lactose fermentation technique (MTFT) has been modified for a rapid detection of coliforms in drinking water.The modified technique completes in 24hrs, in two stages, involving new chemically defined culture medium. In the presumptive stage, 3 sets of tubes are taken using modified broth. Incubation was carried out at 40°C for 8- i 2h for bacterial growth. Positive test is indicated by evolution of gas and color change from bluish green to yellow. Based on number of positive tubes MPN (Most Probable Number) coliform per i 00 mL can be determined. The conformation of coliforms can be done by second stage using modified agar medium. After 10-12h of incubation, characteristics colonies with dark red centers 2-3 mm in diameter with metallic sheen appears which confirms presence of coliform. The paper is based on the research undertaken by using this technique, for testing the drinking water and assessment of the same to understand the potability of water.

A rapid and accurate colorimetric method has been proposed for the estimation of nickel (II) in aqueous solution. It is found that nickel(II) ions have maximum absorbance at 393 nm in distilled water and in aqueous sucrose solution (0.3 mol dm^-3). In both case, the Beer's law was obeyed over the range from 0.04 to 0.08 mol dm^-3 of nickel(II).The value of molar absorpitivity was constant 5.1310.03 mol dm^-3. This method is more rapid than the existing spectrophotometeric methods for the estimation of nickel(II). The variation in the results obtained by the method is ±2.1%.

The millimeter-wave rotational spectra of the symmetric top molecules CH₃CN. ¹³CH₃CN, CH₃¹³CN, CH₃¹⁵N. CD₃CN, ¹³CD,CN, CD₃¹³CN and CD₃C¹⁵N have been investigated again in their ground and v₄ = 1 states. The analysis of spectra and fitting the frequencies in these states give rotational parameters with higher accuracy compare with previous works. The parameter H_J = -0.107(96) mHz was determined for CH₃C¹⁵N for the first time.

A series of complexes of Pb(II), Co(II), Cu(II) and Ni(II) with a tetradentate ligand, 1,3-bis[(5-mercapto-4-phenyl)-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl] propane, [H₂-(BMPTP)] was synthesized and characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, molar conductance, diffused reflectance, magnetic susceptibility, spectral, thermal and X-ray studies. The antimicrobial and antifungal activity of the metal complexes have been checked. All of the metal-cpmplexes are of 1:1 (M :L) stoichiometry. The IR spectra show that the tetradentate ligand coordinating through the SN-NS donor system. Various ESR parameters for the Cu(II) complex have been calculated. The complexes are polymeric in nature and non-electrolytic in nature. Magnetic moment value indicate diamagnetic nature of Pb(II) complex and paramagnetic nature of cobalt, copper and nickel complexes. The electronic spectral data suggest a tetrahedral geometry for Pb(II) complex, an octahedral geometry for Co(II) and Ni(II) complex and a pseudo-tetrahedral geometry for Cu(II)complex. The metal complexes show high antimicrobial activities and do not show any antifungal activity.

In many uranyl compounds the most often literature found is for the fundamental vibrations of the uranyl ion while there is negligible literature on the anion vibrations which mostly fall in the far-IR region. The crystal structure studies of many uranyl compounds have shown the UO₂ bond as being almost linear. In the present study of UC₂Cl₂ and UO₂F₂ the UO₂ bond is assumed to be very nearly linear and belonging to the C_2v point group of symmetry. A normal coordinate analysis has confirmed the linear configuration of the UO₂ for the two molecules. A complete vibrational assignment of the anion vibrational modes in the IR spectra is well supported by high values of the potential energy distribution calculated from the force constants.
