The Harbour water of Calcutta and Haldia port complexes and Paradip port were collected and analysed for the assessment of their quality. Twenty-five parameters were analysed including heavy metals in each sample. The occurrence of high levels of pH, conductivity, dissolved solids at some locations and high levels of suspended solids at all the sampling locations in the dock waters of Calcutta and Haldia port complexes were discussed keeping in view of the activities in and around the port. The existence of anaerobic conditions and hence occurrence of high levels of nitrite, sulphide and low levles of dissolved oxyger in the harbour and dock waters of both the ports were also discussed.

In this study the impact of the recycled water of the soild physico-chemical properties, has been carried out and a comparative study also carried out with the tubewell irrigated soil. In this comparative study both sties wre agricultural land and cultivated crop was rice. One site was situated near the oxidation pond in Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL) , Haridwar and irrigated with recycled water from this oxidation pond. Another site was situated near Bahadarabad and irrigated with tubewell water. In the study, the results have indicated that the recycled water irrigated soil was more fertile due to nutrient availability (like moisture content, pH, EC, calcium hardness, magnesium hardness, salinity, organic matter, carbon contet, available phophorus, potassium and CEC) than the tubwell water irrigated soil. Concludeds that recycled water have a beneficial impact on soil properiteis and as well as on crop yield.

Out of the selected sampling sites water quality of a deep tubewell in Chutia areas shows higher values of nitrate, chloride, calcium and magnesium. In general total hardness of water from deep tubewell/borewll was higher than dam water and PHED supply water.

The study involves the physio-chemical analysis of various samples from different stations in the Amritsar, Patiala and Bhatinda districts. As these districts are most developing and urbanized regions of Punjab state and major pollution in the studied area are due to the various industries and unsatisfactory sewerage system. Water quality is determined by measuring certain water quality parameters, which indicates that these districts are polluted due to organic pollution. Heavy metal although naturally occurring, has been found in some sufficient concentraion of few places. The metals, which have been analyzed, were Cu, Fe, Mn, Cd, Ni and Zn. Sources of these metals in the studied area are mainly from industrial waste, atmospheric release, domestic sewage discharge and land run off. Pb is absent in studied area. The high concentratrion of metals and other pollutants cause serious disorders in human being and disturb the metabolic function. So the studies in the above region are presented.

Four hand pumps, one power pump scheme and a rainwater harvesting pond (Oorani) are the existing drinking water sources in the habitation. Among the available sources, people prefer pond water both for drinking and cooking. People also report that the ground water is not good for cooking purpose. Demarcation of catchment area and protection from defecation practice in addition to chlorination after every rainfall is suggested to prevent bacteriological pollution of pond water. Alkalinity in ground waters cause coloration of rice etc. Boiling and blending of ground water with pond water can render fit for cooking. Turbidity in pond water can be brought down by keeping it in vessels undisturbed for 30 day.

The measurement of potential alpha energy concentration (PAEC) due to radon and its progenies was made in some dwelling in 2 floor levels at Kalpakkam. The measurements were made using the passive time integrated method by employing CR 39 solid state nuclear track detector (SSNTD).The data obtained were compared for the variation in teh radon level between the ground and first floors. The geometric mean of PAEC due to indoor radon in the ground and first floors varied marginally. However, the levels were found to be within the action level prescribed by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) for dwellings.

Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Pb, Cd and other dissolved ions leached at significant concentration levels while Cu and Zn leached normally at low concentration levels. A study was carreid out to evaluated the impact of treated dairy effluent in vermicomposting. Megascolex maritii were used for the study. Three different kinds of wasts, that is garbage (heterogenous waste), fruit and vegetable waste and meat wastes were used separately. Six eco-bins, 3 maintained as control in which good quality water was used and 3 was maintained as treated, in which good quality water was used and 3 was maintained content of 55-60%. Nutrient values were determined from the compost obtained using treated dairy effluent and compared with that of the control. From these results, it was found that NPK values varied in compost obtained from different types of wastes. It has also been found that the composting period was greatly reduced with the use of treated diary effluent. NPK values were maximum in compost obatined from garbage with the use of treated dairy effluent. In other wastes the NPK values varied.

Sensors attached to a vertically moored array showed large variability in the depth values (<126> 13 m) as recorded by CTDs. During the observational period, though fair weather conditions prevailed, very strong sub-surface currents (<62> 90 cm/s) with abrupt change in the direction (within 1 h) were noticed. The tidal amplitude in this region was less than 1.5 m, as indicated by the depth sensor attached to the bottom moored acoustic buoy and the ADCP. Hence, the large variability recorded in the depth sensors was attributed to the tilling of the array in the direction of strong subsurface currents.

The major source of Hg appears to be the industry located near the esturary. The concentration of Hg has been observed to be decreasing from 0.51 μg/gm in 1991 to 0.16 μg/gm in 2000. The present Hg concentration is well within the natural background value of average shale (0.18 μg/gm).

Use of the key parameters of drinking water quality standards is made to evaluate water quality index (WQI), an mathematical outcome of transforming large volume of water quality data into a single number that represents a level of water quality eliminating the subjective assessments of water quality and bias of the individual quality expert. Correlation coefficients are worked out for the observed water quality parameters. Water quality indices derived from analytical results of the river Betwa in Bina region show that, water quality may be rated as 'good' (WQI-38.90) and physico-chemically fit, whereas groundwater quality may be rated as 'poor' to 'very poor' (WQI-79.90) and unfit for human consumption. Both surface and groundwater were found to be contaminated and need to be disinfected for potable use.

The case studies described reveal the existence of well-defined boundary layer layer with a height of 1.5-3.2 km during pre-monsoon period. Water quality assessment survey was carried out in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu particularly for problem villages. Ground water in the district is available in 4 zones : (a) shallow fresh water zone, (b) deep and confined fresh water zone (c) moderate quality zone, and (d) saline water zone. Water quality was assessed from 61 water sources consisting of Ooranis (rain fed village ponds), shallow open, wells, tube wells and form the distribution system of organized water supply. Most of the open wells and tube wells have high turbidity and gross hardness, TDS and nitrate content. Oorani water though potable was having high turbidity and gross pollution. It was observed that Oorani water had high chlorine demand and also high bacterial count. Dug wells also showed presence of total, Escherichia coli, Faecal coliform and Faecal Streptoccocci contamination. Except iron, concentration of heavy metals in all the samples was below permissible limits. Suggestion are incorporated to improve the water quality management from the organized water supply systems.

¹⁸O/¹⁶O variations of the precipitation recorded in carbonate sediments of a high-altitude Himalayan lake have been investigated by analysing samples from a varve deposit in Goting, Garhwal Himalaya. ¹⁴C ages of four samples from different depths suggest that the sedimentation in the lake started <126> 42 ky BP and continued till <126> 28 ky BP. Fluctuations in δ ¹⁸O values are interpreted in terms of water-source variations. A trend showing the enrichment of δ¹⁸O values between 32 and 28 ka indicates slow cooling as one approaches the Last Glacial Maximum (LMM). There are six strong δ¹⁸O excursions (depleted ratios) coinciding with low δ¹³C valaues at around 40.2, 38.2, 36.2, 34.2, 32.8 and 29.4 ky BP, denoting enhancement of the southwest monsoon. In addition, three positive shifts at around 40.7, 37.2 and 35.2 ky BP were observed, which indicate weakening of the southwest monsoon. Fourier analysis of the δ¹⁸O time series shows a significant <126> 740 year periodicity, similar to that reported in the Arabian Sea and the South China Sea.

At stations 1 and 2 pH value was more during monsoon than summer, which may be due to addition of excess water in these station in monsoon. The minimum conductivity was found in monsoon at sation 4 may be due to addition of rainy water in river. The higher value of total solid was found in postmonsoon and monsoon at stations 1 and 2 may be due to soil erosion in monsoon season. The study quantities of the nutrients (Na) were more in river water in monsoon and post monsoon, however the potassium were analyzed more in summer and monsoon season. The nitrogen concentration was observed maximum in monsoon season and minimum in summer and winter season.

The waste effluent generated during various manufacturing process of bulk drug was characterized for different water quality parameter. The toxic effect of waste effluent was evaluated with respect to soil was very high and cannot be recommended for any agricultural use.

The prevalence study of dental and skeletal fluorosis undertaken in Rapthadu and Kuderu mandals of Anantapur district with 2 different water F^- levels showed high prevalence rate in Rapthadu mandal which had higher water F^- and food F^- levels compared to Kuderu mandal. These levels corresponded to the total F^- intake, serum F^- and urinary F^- levels. Positive correlations were found between F^- intake and dental and skeletal fluorosis prevalence; F^- intake and serum F^- levels; F^- intake and urinary F^- levels. Body Na and K levels were found to be with in the normal ranges for all the subjects. However, serum Ca levels were lower than the normal limits and decreased with increased serum F^- levels.

Timjore is a small village in Lathikata Block, Sundargarh district, Orissa. The village is on the bank of river Brahmani, about 35 km away from Rourkela, the steel city of Orissa. Being far away from Rourkela Steel Plant and Fertilizer Plant, it faces less amount of environmental pollution. The present work aims at the study of water palatability of river Brahmani and ground water of the river basin. Different physico-chemical parameters of the experimental water are analyzed and compared with the standard values prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMRF) and World Health Organization (WHO). Results show that the amounts of iron present in the grounwater are above the prescribed limit whereas the river water is suitable for drinking purpose.

The degree of pollution by ash containing effluents discharged from koradi thermal power plant of Maharashtra State Electricity Board, into the Kolar river has been studied by ionic, microbiol and physico-chemical analysis. Samples were collected during the months of November 1998 to October 1999 from 6 different sampling points along the kolar river. Some important ionic constituents including variables, such as % sodium and SAR were calculated. BOD and COD values correlated with the MPN. The bacterial load of coliform, faecal coliform and Esherichia-coli was evaluated. The work has been undertaken with the aim to evaluate the degradation if any of river water due to thermal power plant effluents in the form of fly-ash slurry (ash bund disposal wastewater) being discharged into the water body.

Middle Miocene to Early Pleistocene fuluvial sediments (about 6 km thick) of the Siwalik Group are widley distributed in the southern frontaal area of the Himalaya. The Siwalik Group along the Bakiya Khola (River) in Central Nepal consists of many fining-upward cycles on a scale from several to tens ofmeters, but compreses a stratigraphic coarsening-upward succession as a whole. In order to estimate palaeohydrologic parameters and evolutional changes of the fluvial depositional dystem in the Bakiya Khola section, grain diameters, sedimentary structures, and thickness of fining-upward cycles are considerd. The palaeohydrologic estimate based on stratigraphy suggests progressively increasing flow velocity from 0.22 to 4.93 m/s, and steeping channel slope gradient from 2.14 x 10<^>-5 to 1.05 x 10<^>-3 m/m. These changes reflect the southward propagation of thrust activity in the Himalaya (e.g., Main Central Thrust, MCT; Main Boundary Thrust, MBT; Main Frontal Thrust, MFT).
