Mineralogical studies of Jammu coal of Kalakot coalfield (viz-Dali mine) and its low temperature ash (LTA) have been carried out for characterization of minerals, using scanning electron microscopy technique. The scanning electron microscopy technique established the presence of quartz, clay, pyrite framboids, kaolinite, and iron-oxide crystals in a matrix of other minerals in the L.T. ash of Dali mine coal. The mineralogy has been discussed in the light of the geological factors. The utilization potentials of Jammu coal of Kalakot coalfield (viz - Dali mine) on the basis of its mineralogy is examined.

Six models of the autoregressive moving average (ARMA) family were investigated for representing the monsoonal river inflow forecast models. The selected models were validated for significance of the residual mean, and for significance of the periodicities in the residents. The models which represent the monsoonal river Jakham monthly inflows are ARMA (1,0), ARMA (3,0), ARMA (3,0) II R constrained, ARMA (2,1), ARMA (3,1) and ARMA (3,1) II AR constrained. Whereas all the models have insignificant residual mean values, the models ARMA, (1,0) ARMA (3,0) II AR constrained and ARMA (3,1) have significant periodicities when the cumulative periodogram is plotied and hence these models may not be considered to be appropriate. The ARMA (3,0) model was found to be the most appropirate for representing Jakham river inflows. It is concluded that cumulative periodogram test should be perfomed to test the significance of periodicities of the residuals of the models.

Because of this the concentration of the pollutants in the atmosphere has the increase the adverse effects. Particulate matter having size les than 10 microns (PM-10) has been identified as critical pollutant causing potential health hazard for human being. A study was carried out to assess the concentration of PM-10 present in the ambient air in Chennai city during the summer season of the yar 2000 (April - June 2000). Sampling was done at Anna Nagar (A Nagar), Adyar, Kilpauk and Vallalar Nagar (V Nagar). The monthly mean concentraion of PM-10 concentration was found to lie above the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) values.

Magnetic cleaning using thermal as well as alternating field demagnetization techniques have shown a multi-component assembly of the remanent magnetic vectors in these samples. Mineral magnetic studies suggested occurrence of high coercivity anti-ferromagnetic minearls (goethite and hematite) in addition to the ferrimagnetic minerals (magnetite and maghemite). therefore a demagnetization strategy of initial thermal demagnetization up to 200°C to remove goethite and/or viscous/ pigmentary (SP) hematite components, alternating field demagnetization till 60 mT to remove the soft ferrimagnetic components, and finally thermal demagnetization above 550°C to isolate the primary component was found most successful. Total ten out of 27 reversals encountered were assigned ages based on iterative matching of the long normal event [`C5n' (9.7 to 10.95 Ma) of Cande and Kent, 1995] besides lateral correlation from the earlier reported sections in the hanging will of JT. The long normal interval of RK section has been extended laterally to the 900m thick part of Kotala section 35 km westward, using Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility (AMS) over channel facies. A basin-wide correlation of the magnetostratigraphic section in the KSB suggest that the magnetic polarity events; (a) base of the long normal (C5n) at 10.95 Ma, (b) base of C4n at 8.07Ma, (c) base of C3n at 5.23 Ma, and (d) the Gauss-Matuyama boundary (top of C2An) at 2.58 Ma are more distinct.

Published magnetic polarity data on Late Cenozoic sequences in the Indian sector, and discuss have been complied and synthesized, and discussed their utility for time stratigraphic inferences useful to constrain tectonic and climatic changes. Also the use of magnetic fabrics over channel sandstones and rock magnitic rations of the pedogenic horizons as correlation tools have been discussed.. It is observed that the magnetic polarity events (a) the base of long normal (C5n) at 10.95 Ma, (b) the base of C4n at 8.07 Ma, (c) the base of C3n at 5.23 Ma, (d) the Gauss-Matuyama boundary (top of C2An) at 2.58 Ma, and (e) the Brunhes Matuyama boundary (base of C1n) at 0.78 Ma, are the most characteristic events in the Late Cenozoic Siwalik sequence. The sediment accumulation rates derived from a total of 56 sections throughout the Himalayan foreland indicate a notable rise during 10.8 to 9.5 Ma (deposition of Nagristandstone) and records the largest fluctuation after 1.7 Ma (widespread occurrence of boulder conglomerates. A use of magnetic susceptibility for basin-source modeling has been demonstrated.

Two major events of sedimentation pattern and drinage organization at 10 Ma nad 5 Ma with minor interspersed events are recognized in a 10-0.5 Ma succession of the Himalayan Foreland Basin (HFB). The first event commencing at round 10 Ma records the predominance of thick, multistories, grey sheet sandstone over mudstone-dominated succession. The second event at around 5 Ma records the accumulation of extensive and thick conglomerate. These two events are related to tectonic activity along the Main Central Thrust and Main Boundary Thrust, respectively. Fluvial architecture of both the events suggests large river network, with high sediment flux and broad catchment area, which could either be provided by tectonically raised high relief and/or climatic change (high intensity rainfall.

Late Quaternary fluvial sediments have been identified as the immediate source of arsenic in ground water in the delta region of the Ganges in India and Bangladesh as well as the Red Rier in Vietnam. Rockweathering in the catchment area is the obvious mechanism by which the sediments have acquired the arsenic load, A hard rock terrain in central India offers examples of such weathering reactions. Mafic and felsic igneous bed rocks of this area contain arsenopyrite and arsenian pyrite. Residual soil profiles are lateritic with goethite and kaolinite as major constituents. desorption experiments indicated that the soil minerals had quantitatively retained arsenic. Similar adsorption sites could have contributed to the transport and deposition of arsenic in deltaic sediments. the recent mobilization into groundwater is apparently controlled by a series of competitive redox reactions.

The crustal thermal structures of the Godavari garben and coastal basin along the DSS profiles of National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) was delineated by 2-D thermal modelling using available geological and geophysical data. The study revealed that the Moho temperature varies between approximately 625 and 640°C along the Paloncha-Narsapur profile, whilst it is ~ 600°C along Kallur-Polavaram profile. The calculated surface heat flow values vary between 57 and 59 mW/M<^>2 along the Palonch-Narsapur profile and 59 and 64 mW/m<^>2 along the Kallur-polavaram profile except at Ashwaraopet where the value is 105 mW/m<^>2 due to hydrothermal circulation. The Curie isotherm in this region is found to lie approximately at a depth of 36±2 km and is in conformity with the value predicted from MAGSAT data.

Potential utility of satellite derived winds is investigated for better depiction of circulation patterns over Indian region. Daily satellite derived upper tropospheric Water Vapour Wind Vectors (WVWV) obtained from GMS-5 satellite over Port Blair 151-250 and 251-350hPa layers were compared with radiosonde (RS) winds of Port Blair (11.7°N, 92.7°E) fro the year 1997 (00 and 12Z). Making use of thisalgorithm, upper tropospheric winds at 150, 200, 250, 300 and 350hPa levels were generated for the complete life cycle of a tropical cyclone (14-21 May 1997) over the Bay of Bengal. Using this data an algorithm was developed to relate satellite derived moisture winds and RS winds. A higly significant correlation between satellite drived moisture winds and radiosonde winds was observed at 150, 175, 200, 250, 300 and 350 hPa levels for both U and V components.Root Mean Sequare (rms) errors of satellite derived winds were generally less than 6 mps as compared to RS data, for all the levels. Impact of these winds on objective analysis using Optimum Interpolation (OI)scheme during various stages of the above tropical cyclone (TC) was evaluated. These analysed winds were compared with subjective and NCEP/NCAR reanalyses. It was found that there was positive impact of WVWVs on wind speed, circulation and centre of anticyclone than NCEP/NCAR reanalyses and analyses with RS data only.

To study the main features of the seismic response of the building and its interaction with the soil when subjected to several small and moderate size earthquakes in a seven-year period. From the analysis of the seismic records, variations of natural frequencies and damping of the soil-sructure system were observed. It was found that the dynamic properties of the system are very sensitive to the intensity of the ground shaking. Significant stiffness degradation of the building was found as well. The variation of structural parameters of the system can be attributed mainly to different non-linearity sources of the structure.

The water level hydrographs against the rainfall show one-month time lag in the response of the water table due to the rainfall events.It has been also observed that aquifer reponds only to the rainfall during the period between October to December of each year and not to the total amount of rainfall. This could be probably due to the high groundwater, terperature and evapotranspiration during the rest of the year. It was observed from correlation coefficient computed for different wells at different time that more recharge is taking place in the wet period only i.e. during November and December of the each year. The correlation coefficient is used to clarify the basin into various recharge zones.

Field studies and interpretation of topographic maps have helped in identification and delineation of a large number of NNW-SSE, N-S and NE-SW trending active faults which post-date NW-SE oriented thrust system and shear zones of the Lohi region of the Eastern arunachal Pradesh. The northerely-trending faults have caused pronounced deflection of rivers and streams and damage to recently constructed river bridges along with subsidence of roads. Movements along the faults and thrust are also evident from abrupt rise of mountain front, occurrence of planar scarp and triangular facets devoid of gullies or with a few straight furrows, fresh hugh landslides, abrupt narrowing down of wide meandering rivers, uplifted fluvial terraces and blockage of streams.

The Late Quaternary sequences of Southern Mainland Kachchh show three distinct geomorphic surfaces-the featureless alluvial plain the extremely dissected surface characterized by deep ravines and a low flat terrace surface. The base of the exposed fluvial succession is marked by a coarse gravelly facies. This is overlain by a thick buried soil with abundant pedogenic calcrete nodules. It is hosted in fluvial sands and silts. Three radiocarbon dates of pedogenic calcretes from these soils indicate that the pedogenic phase is pre-LGM. the soil horizon is overlain by a planar to trough cross stratified sandy gravel followed by partially pedogenically altered fine sandy silts. The entire fluvial succession is deeply incised and shows deep gullies indivative of a post-depositional phase of severe erosion during Early Holecene. The decreasing intensity of gully erosion and the depth of incision towards south, conforming to the tilt block structure, suggest that fluvial incision and gully erosion was controlled by tectonics. The terrace sediments comprise coarse to medium fluvial sands and silts which are devoid of calcretes and pedogenesis. The fluvial geomorphology and exposed sequences in the various river valleys are correlatable, suggesting broadly coeval depositional and erosional phases, that may be linked to regional tectonic and palaeoenvironmental changes.

Majuli, the world's largest river island, is situated in mid of river Brahamputra in Assam. River Brahamputra flows in highly braided channels most of them are transient in nature, being submerged during high monsoon flows and changing drastically their geometry and location. Majuli island, home of about 1.3 million people in endangered because of the erratic behaviour of the river. In this study, an attempt has been made to observe the trends of erosion in a small part of Majuli island, the area near Kaniajan village in soth Majuli- a stretch of about 11 km, using satellite data of 1991, 1997 and 1998. Image processing of digital data has been done in ILWIS software. Supervised for delineation of river from land and then change detection analysis has been done to find out changes in river course from 1991 to 1997 and further from 1997 to 1998. Erosion and deposition maps of the area have been prepared and the erosion of island is measured at various sections at 1 km interval. Erosion 1900 ha has been observed during the period of six years from 1991 to 1997 and 845 ha during the period of one year from 1997 to 1998.

Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and their derivatives are routinely exploited for a wide range of planning and engineering applications such as land reclamation, calculation of cut-and-fill requirements for earth works or to determine other relevant geomorphological landscape parameters. The advent of computer (digital) manipulation of elevation data has opened up great possibilities for studying the geometry of our land surface in relation to physical factors such as climate, vegetation, soils and geology. Concerned with the generation, testing and validation of DEM and its derived terrain parameters viz. contours, drainage pattern etc. using IRS-1C stereo pair over a part of Alwar district, Rajasthan, India. In particular, it reports on the results achieved using indigeneously developed stereo- processing software along with standard GIS and terrain analysis package to derive DEM and associated terrain parameters of the study area. The results are encouraging when compared with Survey of India topographical maps at 1:50,000 scale in terms of point to point accuracy of DEM, data quality evaluation of orthoimage and higher order drainage delineation.

Results from theaerosol characteristics for different wavelengths suggested a typical pattern of increase in aerosol optical thickness with decrease in wavelength i.e. maximum AOT is observed at 380 nm region. Detailed analysis revealed that, maximum values of aerosol optical depth have been observed during afternoon and early evening hours.RH and water vapor showed a positive correltation with aerosol optical depth and air temperature showed a negative correlation with aerosol optical depth in all wavelengths. Total suspended particulate matter showed negative correlationwith AOT.Analysis of results from the PAR measurements showed negative correlation with Aerosol Optical Depth in the 500nm region over the study area. SUV values of different days of February suggested clear diurnal trend in minimal erythmal dose. Comparison of SUV values of Hyderabad with Delhi suggested a higher range for Hyderabad when compared to Delhi for the month of April. In the study, an attempt has been made to study the effect of aerosols on the visibility factor at different sites for the years 1999 and 2000. Analysis with respect to visibility for different sites suggested that during the year 1999, Balanagar followed by Charminar, showed a low visibility when compared to other sites. This is mainly attributed to the contribution of aerosols from the industrial souces.

Estimation of recharge, by whatever method, is normally subject to large uncertainties and erros. An attempt has been made to derive an empirical relationship to determine ground water recharge from rainfall in Upper Ganga Canal command area based upon seasonal ground water balance study carried out for a number of years.

The Yamuna-Karwan sub-basin forms a logical unit for hydro-chemical and hydrogeological investigations, and is bounded by two natural hydroboundaries, the river yamuna in the west and river karwan in the east. Chemical quality of water based on physico-chemical parameters and major ions has been investigated to ascertain its suitability for drinking and irrigational purposes. The results of analytical data show that the groundwater in the area is potable, hard, alkalines, moderately mineralized and alkali bicarbonate type. Most of the samples analyzed were found suitable for irrigational use except few which fall in the poor zone of water quality class. Environmental hazards observed in the area are soil salinization, water logging and human interference with the nature posing a threat to ecological balance of the study area.

Potential zones for artificial recharge in Agniar-Ambuliar-Southvellar river basins in Tamilnadu, India have been delineated through integration of various thematic maps using Arc view GIS. The study area, covers an area of 4566 km<^>2. Thematic maps pertaining to geology, permeability, effective soil depth, drainage intensity, soil texture, water holding capacity and physiography were prepared on 1:2,50,000 scale using conventional methods. These maps were scanned and registered with reference to a base map and are prepared as separate layers or coverages using Arc view. GIS has been used for the integration of various thematic maps to delineate the potential zones for artificial recharge. Each theme was assigned a weightage depending on its influence on groundwater recharge. Each class or unit in the map was assigned a knowledge based ranking from one to four depending on its significance in storage and transmittance of groundwater. The final map has been prepared showing four different categories of potential zones for artificial recharge.

Investigations have been made for groundwater exploration and artificial recharge for groundwater augmentation in Champavathi River Basin area (CRB), Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh following the concept of watershed. The basin has a drainage area of about 1410.87 sq. km. The area comes under the Eastern Ghat Mobile Belt (EGMB) consisting of Precambrian formation of high grade metamorphic rocks, constituting khondalites, charnockites, quartzites, migmatites and calc-granulites. Groundwater potential zones and recharge pockets have been identified based on hydro-geological data and geological data and geo-electrical data. Based on these studies groundwater potential of the area si categorised as good, medium and poor. Over 80 wells have been monitored to assess and 48 Vertical Electrical Soundings (VES) have been carried out. The primary parameters r and h and the Dar Zarrouk parameters T, S and λ are determined to demarcate groundwater potential zones and artificial recharge sites. Vertical geo-electrical sections and spatial distribution of secondary parameters are constructed. The areas with 1.0 and less than 1.5 anisotropy are considered for grounwater potential zones and for recharge pockets.This range of anisotropy indicates high porosity and permeability.

Pre-monsoon and post-monsoon surface waterlogged areas were delineated using satellite remote sensing data for Muzaffarpur, Vaishali and Saran districts of North Bihar. Digital data of IRS-1C LISS-III sensor acquired on December 7, 1998 and April 6, 1999 were analyzed using digital image processing software-ERDAS Imagine 8.3.1.The surface waterlogged areas were delineated using modeling technique which is the most advanced and accurate method. Using the modeling technique, a pixel is classified as water if the digital number (DN) value of its Near Infra Red (NIR) band is less than the DN value of the Red band and the Green band, and the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) is greater than or equal to 0.32. The pre-monsoon surface waterlogged areas are found to be 14.02, 23.61 and 9.61 km<^>2 while the post-monsoon surface waterlogged areas are found to be 231.83, 118.19 and 176.06 km<^>2 for Muzaffarpur, Vaishali and Saran districts, respectively. Also, land use/land cover maps were prepared.

The nonlinear triad interactive relationship between high and low frequency transients and time mean flow over tropics and extra tropics has been examined by use of the cross spectral technique with 3 year of European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) 850 hpa and 200hpa summertime wind fields, verticle velocity and temperature data. In the extratropics, at the upper troposphere, low frequency waves of period 45 days shows an overall gain of energy from its triad interactions with all other pairs of waves, particularly in the regions (20°N-30°N and 50°N-60°N). High frequency waves show an overall loss in this regard as well as through baroclicnic in scale energy transfer. The lower latitudes constitantly show sign reversals for both frequency bands. The nonlinear interaction of KE associated with low frequency motions in the tropics takes the opposite direction of that in the extra tropics. Tropical convection plays an important role for the maintenance of tropical intraseasonal oscillations. Low frequency oscillation of 30 days period is found to be very much interactive in the planetary scale dynamics of monsoon inthe upper troposphere. The results suggest that wave-CISK process and strong gradient of SST are the possible mechanisms associated with low frequency waves in the lower troposphere over the west Pacific and east coast of Africa.

Mapping in the Homs region of syria has revealed a hitherto unrecognized staircase of a least 12 gravel terraces of the upper Orontes River. The terrace gravels overlie Pliocene lacustrine marl and have been calcareously cemented into conglomerates, sometimes interbedded with cemented fine-grained alluvium. A tentative deting scheme, based on modelling the regional-scale surface uplift that has driven fluvial incision of ~ 400 m since the latest Miocene, and incorporating correlation with the dated terraces in the valley of the middle Orontes using height above the river, envisages terrace formation spanning at least the last 1.2 Ma.

Studies of the fluvial sequences exposed in river bank cliffs of Bhadar, Nali, Hiran and Singwado river valleys of South Saurashtra have revealed the presence of trough cross-bedded gravels (Gt), massive sand (Sm) and planar cross-bedded sand (Sp) facies. Thin palaeosol (P facies) layers developed on the substrate of basalt and limestone as well as on the fluvial gravels and sand are also observed. the clear influence of marine flooding in the river valleys is recorded in the form of bioclastic carbonate sand-dominated units that contain biogenic structures and associated tidal clays. Punctuation in the fluvial sequences in the form of pedogenesis, erosion and marine flooding provide clues for changes in regional climate and sea level. The maximum elevation of the marine flooding clusters around 10-15 m. Acheulian tools and radiometric dates of the associated miliolite limestone indicate that the marine flooding in these river valleys is possibly linked to the marine oxygen isotope stage five.

As part of the objectives of the biostratigraphy subgroup of the IGCP Project 449, these sequences in India and Nepal, spread over a distance of 700 km on the base of molluscan, ostracode and charophyte assemblages which, though facies controlled, occur abundantly in overbank mudstones are being correlated.

The total ozone dericed from TOVS data from NOAA 12 satellite through one step physical retrieval algorithm of International TOVS Processing Package (ITTP) version 5.0 has been used to identify its dirrnal, monthly, latitudinal and longitudinal variability during 1998 over the domain Equator to 26(F128)(144)(F255)N/60-100(f128)(144)(F255)E. The linkage of maximum total ozone with varmer tropopause and lower stratosphere has been re-estabilshed. The colder upper tropospheric temperature whcih is normally associated with maximum ozone concentration throughout the year elsewhere in the world has also been identified in this study but the relationship gets reversed during southwest monsoon months (June-September) over the domain considered. The moisture a available in abundance n the lower troposphere gets pecipitated due to the convective instability prevailinhg in the atmosphere during monsoon season and very little moisture in only available for vertical transport into the upper troposphere atop 500 hPa. The latent heat released by the precipitaiton processes warms up the middle and upper atmosphere. The warm and dry upper troposphere could be the reason for less depletion of ozone in the upper troposphere during monsoonal months and this is supported by the positive correlation coefficient prevailing in monsoon season between total ozone and upper tropospheric (aloft 300 hPa) temperature. The warmness in middle and upper troposphere which is associated with less depletion and/or production of more ozone in the upper troposphere may perhaps contrubute for the higher total ozone during monsoon months than in other seasons over peninsuslar Indian region. The minimum concentration is observed during January (226 DU) over 6(F128)(144)(F255)N and the maximum (283DU) over 18(F128)(144)(F255)N during August. Longitudinal variability is less pronounced that the latitudinal variability.
