Orientations of joints, river courses and ridges have been measured and analysed statistically on the three major islands (Mahe, Praslim and La Digue) of the Seychelles archipelago. An inspection of the results leads at once to the recognition of a remarkable consistency between the main directions of the joints, rivers and ridges on all islands (strikes NW-SE). A reasonable consistency also exists between the secondary directions. This supports the supposition that the joints and the physiography are closely related. If one connects teh physiography with tectonics on the basis of the idea that joints are somehow indicative of the shear of the tectonic stress field, then the bisectrices of their preferred strikes indicate the direction of the principal tectonic stresses. The latter would be about N-S and E-W. Such directions of the principal stresses could be very reasonable:An E-W stress-relief could indicate the direction of separation of the Seychelles (and India) from Africa and a N-S compression the direction of collision of Afro-India with Eurasia, completely in agreement with common plate tectonic interpretaitons.

176 Drinking water samples collected from 20 different tubewells and 2 muncipal supply water sources in the Darrang district were analysed for Na, K, Ca, Mg anf Fe. These samples were collected in 8 different seasons spreading over a period of 4 year (Nov 1995 to Oct 1999). The results indicated that the potassium concentrations were relatively lower than the sodium concentration. Similarly Mg concentrations were lower than the Ca concentrations. Iron concentration was above the permissible limit. However it was observed that the iron content of the water samples of mangaldai sub division was slightly higher than those of Udalguri sub division.

The Kulu-Rampur and Larji window make a window structure in the NW Himalaya. The rocks in the window zone have sufferd multiple deformation with six sets of Himalayan structures have been recognized. The isoclinal (recumbent)F<^>1 fold and associated S<^>1 axial plane cleavage in the parautochthons have formed during D<^>1 deformation prior to the thrusting along MCT zone durign early Miocene. The Lesser Himalayan crystallines of the MCT zone have been thrusted over the parautochthoms along Jutogh and Chail thrusts during D<^>2 deformation, which continued till middlelate Miocene. The S<^>2 shear foliation (C) and L<^>2 fabric suggest top to SW shearing. The NW-SE trending F<^>3, crenulaation and fracture cleavages (S<^>3) represented D<^>3 deformation fabric. The macroscopic F<^>3 has folded D<^>2 nappes prior to the initiation of MBT during late Miocene and possibly represent the faulat-bend-folds in the Lesser Himalayan duplex system. The F<^>4 cross folding is responsible for the doubly pluging charater of the window zones and growth zones and growth of S<^>4. The Jakhri-Sungri and Banjar thrusts cut across the D<^>2 and D<^>3 structures during D<^>5 deformation. The thrusting of the rocks of Kulu-Rampur window onto the rocks of Larji window along the Banjar Thrust made the later a window in window structure. The WGC is thrusted onto the Rampur Group in the window zone and higher-grade metamorphic rocks over the lower grade within the Jutogh nappe along the Jakhir-Sungri Thrust. Extensional shearing and faulting with associated neotectonic activity mark the latest D<^>6 deformation in the window zone.

In the beginning of the New Millennium, emerging problems on water resources of India primarily relate to the occurrence of water scarcity, water pollution and water as a source of conflicts i.e.inter-state water disputes. One of the burning problems of this decade is the water availability (basin wise/somainwisse) in our country. According to the observations of hydro-geomorphologists and environmentologists. Scarcity of water is affecting India with increasing rapidity. Through all the decades of development water resources have been taken for granted; today we are face to face with an acute water scaricity that is posing a grace threat ot the potentioal for the development of the country. Water resource management strategy in India has so far been guided by the philosophy taht 'water is strictly a fixed resource and we cannot really destroy it on any significant scale'. On the basis of this philosophy, which assumes that water is undestroyable because it is renewable. India has, in fact, extensively depleted her resources. Disrupted water cycles can turn water from an abundant renewable resource into a vanishing nonrenewable resource. This ecological risk assumes a tremendous significance in view of the fact that by 2025 A D the current maximum utilizable annual freshwater resource of India, which is estimated at 104 million hectaremeters will be utilized to the extend of 42. There are enough indicataors to suggest that even at the present scale of utilisation most parts of the country are already facing acute water shortage. The most alarming and exponential increases in water scaaricty in India cannot situtation in be exclusively linked to fluctuations in rainfall. Although rainfall has been deficient in recent years there has been no long-term deviation. This mecessitates a deeper hydro ecological look into especially in the undulating terrain associated with scarcity or drought situations in our country.

Liniar relationship model has been developed using the rainfall and chemical characteristics observed since 1991 in 3 borewells of Thiruppathur union. Correlation co-efficent value ranges from 0.016 to 0.92. Mixed trend of variation is found. For planning and management, the developed equations may be used with certain degree of accuracy.

With the digital output the following thematic maps have been prepared using arc view : (1) Total dissolved solids (TDS), (2) Salinity and sodium hazard, and (3) Chloride/Bicarbonate ratio. In three locations adjoining the coast saline water intrusion has been noted and in 3 locations along the interior part of the study area saline water has been identified. A few fresh water pockets have also been identified.

Water samples of groundwater were colected from various sources, that is deep bore-well, hand-pump and dug-well located in different zones of Ranchi area, capital city of Jharkhand and analysed for flouoride and other drinking water quality parameters. The results of groundwater analysis indicate that fluoride is distributed heterogeneously in groundwater of the city. Fluoride in high concentration was found in ground water of southern, western and southwestern zones of the city whereas, in that of the northern , northeastern and southeastern zones of the area it was found in low concentration. The water was found to be slightly acidic in nature and high in iron cincentration in most of the study zones. The present study is an endeavour to provide a systematic and scientific information to the planners to amke their endless effort more fruitful in maintaining a safe drinking water supply in the city.

First and last appearances of dinolagellate cyst taxa present in the assemblage, including Callaiosphaeridium straitoconus, Cyclonephelium compactum, Florentinia cooksoniae, R. mantellii, Heterosphaeridium difficile, Litosphaeridium siphoniphorum and Palaeopeidinium pyrophorum, suggest that the age of the member ranges from Middle to Late Turonian.

Star paper mill, copperative distillary, Nagdev nala, etc., is mainly responsible for the water quality degradation in the upper stretch of the Hindon river. The river Pedda Gedda is a minor watershed with an area of 184.9 sq.kms. The river Pedda Gedda has tributary namely Marikavalasa Gedda which is located south western part of the watershed. The drainage divided of two basins of Pedda Gedda and Marikavalasa Gedda have been demarcated based on drainage divide of the watershed. The river has developed over khondalite suite of rocks belonging to the Eastern Ghat group of rocks. The linear, areal and attained 5th order. It indicates the structural control of drianage pattern in the Marikavalasa Gedda which is turn controls the fluviatile cycle development. The morphometric parameters like drainage basin area and drainage density have been compared with the parameters like run-off and flood potential of Pedda Gedda watershed. The gradient of the study area facilitates to implement developmental programmes considering the watershed as a unit. The morphometric parameters have been measured and calculated for the two sub-basins and also for the total watershed to understand the fluvial cycle erosion, development and stage of the river basin.

The probable movement and mixing of contaminants within and through the Kundalika river estuary along the west coast of India are studied. Neutrally buoyant biplane drouges, floates and dye were tracked at different stages of the tide to assess the behaviour of the contaminants released in the estuary. The studies have shown that contaminants if released in the inner estuary trend to accumulate in the upstream regions and would not be flushed out effectively. However, downstream regions expressed larger tidal displacements with wider trajectories revealing better dispersion and transport over larger areas.

The Indian subcontinent with a long coastline distributed among nine coastal states and the islands group of Andaman-Nicobar and Lakshdeep Islands, requires prediction of tides at desired location, based on data from one place to another place, for planning and desing needs, especially at interior of bays or at the vicinity of civil structures. There is no exact analytical model that can predict tides at desired lactions, since the phenomenon involved is uncertain and random in nature. Artifucial Neural Network (ANN) model provides a non-hydrodynamic mapping between given sets of input and output values. Built-in-dynamism in network tracing, data error tolerance and lack of requirments of any exogenous input, etc, make neural network modelling attractive. This paper report a study to predict tides at Navalakhi station based on reference staion at Okha of Gulf of Kutch. Shows that the ANN results of prediction of tides at Navalakhia could be encapsulated in hydrodynamic model so as to save enormous efforts involved in CPU time as well as long duration of boundary conditions at Okha to be prescribed.

Investigation was carried out in the Kachchh mangroves of Gujarat to delineate its structure in a coastal stretch of 300 km. A clear trend of salinity increse from Mundra to Kori creek could be observed. Mean creek water salinity ranged from to 38.8 to 41.5 ppt. Station-wise mean density of mature trees ranged from a minimum of 832/ha to a maximum of 1900/ha with tree heights reaching up to 10 m. Mean density of mature trees decreased in the order of Kori-Jakhau-Mundra-Medi-Laki. Height and GBH classes in the range of 1.6 to 3 m and 21 to 40 cm, respectively predominated in all stations. Among 5 major station both maximum (491666/ha) and minimum (4545/ha) regeneration density were recorded at Jakhau. Density of recuritment class was fairly high at all the stations ranging from 2240/ha at Kori creek to 7783/ha at Medi. Mangroves of Kori creek had high regeneration potential as vidneced by high entry of recruitment class to mature tree category.

Analysis of hourly data on sea level collected at four station in the Cochin estuarine system has been made to understand the tidal and non-tidal sea level variations inside the estuary, for spring and neap phases during March 2000. Spring phase was dominated by semi-diurnal tides whereas neap phase was dominated by diurnal tides. Diurnal and semi-diurnal bands were together responible fo a high percentage of variance of the observed sea level. The dominance of shallow water tides was seen with increasing distance from the mouth. The sea level variance was dominated mainly by tidal signals, but the tidal influence decreased rapidly inside the esturay. Doodson's X0 filter appears to be efficient for de-tiding the observed sea level time series.

In the lower reaches of the Syr-Darya River vast land areas have become wet deserts because of salinity problem as a comsequence of rice-based cropping system. To investigate the reclamation strategy for such areas, one field was leached twice and cultivation trials, using furrow irrigation; were conducted after the leaching. The salinity (ECe) of 0 to 20 cm surface soil was decreased by leaching from 71.2 to 7.9 dS m-1. The groundwater level during trial was at 1 to 2 m depth. The ECgw values in the studied area varied from 3.2 to 87.9 dS m-1, and were almost constat regardless of the irrigation for cultivation. The mean ECe value at 20 to 25 cm depth in the trial field after cultivation was 6.0 dS m-1, while values in non-leached arable and abandoned fields were 12.7 and 50.0 dS m-1, respectively. The values increased with decreasing soil depth. In the trial field, correlation coefficients between the clay content and ECe values were high at the same depth at 0.77

The coastal region of the Indian Ocean is more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. An attempt has been made toestimate the recent SST (sea surface temperature) trends in the coastal zones of the northern Indian Ocean. For this purpose the satellite derived grid point SST data for the period 1985-1998 has been utilized. The SST has show consistent increasesing trends in all the seasons in the coastal belts of Pakistan and the northwestern India upto Bombay (Mumbai). In the coastal regions of hte islands the increasing trend is confined to the summer only. During the winter season the SSTs in the island regions have registered decreasing trends. This is indivative of an extension of the continental inflence towards the islands regions. It has been found that the interannual mode of SST variation dominates the linear SST trends which is characterised by the Quasi Biennial Oscillations (QBO) and the E1 Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) scale cycle. QBO having a periodicity of approximately two years and ENSO having a periodicity of about three to seven years are dominant oscillations of the tropical region. The results of the study can provide useful projections of the future scenario of SST trends and the associated impacts in South Asia.

The final concentrate shows promising grade and recoveries.

A new occurrence of incipient charnockite is reported from Kadavur area of Tamil Nadu. The incipient charnockite is developed within the amphibolite facies gneisses and its formation is controlled by a set of late E-W trending fractures. Geological, petrographic and fluid inclusion data of the IC at Kadavur indicate that its formation post-dates the regional granulite facies event (M1) and shearing activity in the area.

Pyrrhotite - arsenopyrite intergrowth indicates localised conversion of pyrrhotite to arsenopyrite which is of significance to the paragenesis of gold. Thus, there appears to be a time lag between the initial sulphidisation of magnetite into pyrrhotite and subsequent arsenopyritisation of pyrrhotite by As and Au rich hydrotherms. It may be further emphasised that the presence of graphite in close association with arsenopyrite, though in minor quantity, is suggestive of the role played by carbon in scavenging and fixation of gold in arsenopyrite. The ore minerals are also associated with muscovite, light green biotite, sericite etc. Presence of tourmaline as gangue indicates the influx of boron. Fluid inclusion (primary and secondary monophase and biphase) study carried out on mineralised quartz veins show slightly elevated salinity and CO2 density compared to barren quartz in the area. The temperature of homogenization of the mineralized quartz is also higher.

Numerous occurrences and deposits of base rare noble metals and refractory minerals are present within and near the margins of the Sakoli Fold Belt (SFB) along distinct lineaments. An attempt has been made to genetically link the lineament pattern with the characteristics of ore localization and the mineralization episodes. It is observed that within the SFB, individual deposits occur along small limited strike lengths (≤ 1 km), though the mineralization is discontinuously traceable over several kilometers. Important mineral deposits have been established at Pular Parsori, Adyalkitari - Garara (gold-copper), Kuhi - Khobna - Agargaon (tungsten - molybdenum with minor niobium - tantalum) and Dahegaon - Pipalgaon, Nawargaon and Pohara (kyanite - sillimanite). Besides, several small and isolated occurrences of polymetallic mineralization and refractory minerals are observed in other parts of the SFB suggestive of a regional distribution of mineralisation.

Morphological and grain size studies have been carried out at monthly intervals (February 1993 to February 1994) to understand sedimentation pattern. Eight study sites were selected for morpholigical studies and five for grain size studies. It is observed that the morphological changes are cyclic i.e. erosion during monsoon and deposition during fair-weather season. The beach has experienced a loss of about 951 m3/m1, a gain of about 1677 m3/m1 and hence a net gain of about 725 m3/m1 of sediments along the line of transect (all the 8 stations together) over a period of one year. A secondary cycle of erosion is observed between December and February. In general, the sediments of the study area are fine grained, well sorted, and symmetricla and platykurtic in nature. Mean grain size decrease, sorting improves and percentage of fine sand, positively skewed grains increase from north to south (G1 to G 8). Beach experiences moderate turbulent energy conditions and the sediment movement is towards south in this beach. The prevailing conditions in this beach are ideal for recreational development.

Western Turkey form the eastern part of the Angean extensional province. In the 1980s it was accepted that vertical crustal motions in this region are caused solely by this active normal faulting, with footwall localities uplifting and hanging walls subsiding. The presence of marine sediments, interpreted as Pliocene, at altitues in excess of 400 m in some hanging wall localities provided - in the late 1980s - the first clear evidence of Pliocene-Quaternary regional surface uplift. However, it has since been argued that the incision of river gorges in this region has been caused instead by localized uplift in normal-fault footwalls. Available geomorphological and sedimentary evidence from the Denizli area, within the drainage catchment of the Buyuk Menderes river, in support of ~ 400 m of Plio-Quaternary regional surface uplift. The gorge reach of Gediz river near Usak, where a staircase of four high terraces, formed of cemented fluvial gravel at ~ 360, ~330, ~ 255, and ~ 225 m above river level, is identified. Farther downstream a similarterrace, ~ 200m above the river. Tentatively correlated with the ~ 225 m terrace upstream, was also identified within the Quaternary volcanic field around Kula. Nearby, a slightly lower (~ 190 m) terrace gravel is capped by basalt, K-Ar dated to ~ 1.2 Ma; below this, other similar terraces form a lower-level staircase.

Geomagnetic polarity reversals and excursions in the quaternary correlate well with interglacial-to-glacial transitions and glacial maxima. In the Late Plesitocene, geomagnetic excursions directly correlate with the brief phases of rapid ice growth that accompany falls in global sea-level, notably during the Younger Dryas stage, Dansgaard-Oeschger interstadials 5 and 10 that precede the rapid melting events during Heinrich events H3 and H4, and during the transitions between oxygen isotope stages 5c-5b, and 5e-5d. As a result of the transfer of some of the mass of the oceans into polar ice sheets, the climate instabilities that initiate these rapid ice accumulations redistribute angular momentum and ratational kinetic energy between the Earth's mantle and inner core. The subsequent phases of rapid ice meltings, Heinrich events, reverse this effect: strengthening the field. River terrace aggradation in Europe likely to be concentrated during Heinrich events. The most important of these can now be dated throughout the Middle and Late Pleistocene, as they are expected to lag the geomagnetic excursions by no more than ~ 2 ka. Timings of these fluvial aggradations could also be constrained by observation of in situ production spikes of cosmogenic nuclides such as <^>10Be, which would allow direct correlation with the geomagnetic excurisions.

Published data are used to construct an approximate sediment budget for the 1.656 x 10<^>6 km<^>2 catchment of the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers. from these data, it has not been possible to identify the major sources of sediment. Recently published Nd/Sr tracer results suggest that the High Himalaya is the main source of sediment, providing for the first time a focus for more detailed research on the role of land use and other factors in the generation of sediment. Much is yet to be learned about this globally important catchment, and the budget provides a framework for further research.

This enhanced irrigation water use in some areas is causing decline in water levels and reduced yields. Erratic and low rainfall is also responsible for reduced groundwater recharge. The various aspects related to the above issues are discussed.

Middle Miocene to Early Pleistocene fluvial sediments (about 6 km thick) of the siwalik Group are widely distributed in the southern frontal area of the Himalaya. The Siwalik Group along the Bakiya Khola (Ricer) in Central Nepal consists of many fining-upward cycles on a scale from several to tens of metres, but comprises a stratigraphic coarsening-upward succession as a whole. In order to estimate palaehydrologic parameters and evolutional changes of the fluvial depositional system in the Bakiya Khola section, grain diameter, sedimentary structures, and thickness of fining upward cycles are considered. The palaeohydrolic estimate based on straigraphy suggests progressively increasing flow velocity from 0.22 to 4.93 m/s, and steeping channel slope gradient from 2.14 x 10<^>5 to 1.05 x 10<^>3 m/m. These changes reflect the southward propagation of the thrust activity in the Himalaya (e.g, Main Central Thrust, MCT; Main Boundary Thrust, MBT; Main Front Thrust, MFT.

Objective analysis of height field using cumulative semivariogram (CSV) technique has been carried out for 850, 700 and 500hPa levels. Normally in any objective analysis scheme we assure homogeneity of meteorological phenomena i.e. circular radius of influence, but in reality it is not so. Experimental CSV methods yield irregular radii of influence depedning on the regional heterogeneous behaviour fo the phenomenon. The experimental CSVs for daily height data over India and adjoining region have been computed. These experimental CSVs have been converted into experimental CSV weighting functions, which are available in meteorological literature. It is found that none of the geometric weighting functions completely represent the regional variations. Unlike Optimum Interpolation (OI) in which at each grid point matrix inversions are carried out to determine the weights, there is no such matrix inversion in CSV technique. As such analysis using CSV scheme required small computation time as compared to OI scheme without hampering the analysis.

Since effect of inverted metamorphism has extended into the footwall zone, therefore an attempt is made to coorelate the deformation and metamorphism associated with the MCT, with the observed finite strain and corresponding microstructures in a 5 to 7 km thick footwall zone.

The Bouguer anomyl over Dharwar crustal province is predominantly negative and at least a part of which seemsto be related to the Indian Ocean geoidal low. Zero-free air-based (ZFb) analysis of the geoidal corrected Bouguer gravity values in the Dharwar crustal province suggests that the gravity field may be separated into isostatic regional and residual components. The isostatic regional component, caused by the compensation of the regional toporgraphy, was subjected to a gravimetric single density-interface inversion procedure giving a gravimetric Mohorovicic model which is generally in good agreement with the Moho-depth drived by refraction and reflection seismology. The isostatic residual gravity component correlates well with main surface geological units of the Dharwar crustal province. Apparent desnity mapping by applying an inverse density deconvolution filter to the isostatic residual gives density values for the upper crust, which corresponds well with the average density values from rock smaples.

The Ganga Plain, a part of Indo-Gangetic Foreland basin system, is geomorphologically diverse. The Piedmont zone is the northernmost geomorphic element in the Ganga Plain. divisible into gravelly Bhabar zone developed adjacement to mountain foot, and distal sandy Terai areas, the Piedmont surface shows uneven topography, a low drainage density and sub-parallel to radiating drainage pattern. The rivers are incised and do not contribute any sediment load to the piedmont surface. Both clase-and-matrix-supported gravel horizons representing channel fill and debris flow deposits respectively, constitute the bulk of the Piedmont succession. the individual fan explasion cycles (15-56 m thick) forming the Piedmont zone, indicate that with time, the fan-building activity has diminished and successive events became smaller. The Piedmont surface is vertically accreting by mass wasting and sheet flow processes.
