Study on ten species of genus Dendrocalamus Nees was undertaken to assess the diagnostic value of the anatomical features of leaf cross-sections. The various anatomical features observed include: shape of the leaf blade, structure of midrib, presence or absence of adaxial and abaxial girders of sclerenchyma opposite the vascular bundles, number of bundle sheaths, presence and arrangement of bulliform cells, structure and arrangement of mesophyll tissue, presence and arrangement of fusoid cells and colourless cells in the mesophyll. The variations in these features have been found useful in the formulation of an artificial key for the identification of various species of the genus Dendrocalamus.

High performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method was developed and validated for the determination of two xanthones, 1,2,6,8-tetrahydroxyxanthone (SRI) and 2,8-dihydroxy-l,6-dimethoxyxanthone (SR2) in leaves and rhizomes of Swertia speciosa. The extracts were analyzed on C18 column using an isocratic mobile phase which consists of MeOH and H2O at the flow rate of 1 ml/min. Identification of xanthone derivatives was done by using UV variable 'k detector at 260 nm. The limit of detection obtained for the analytes were in the range of 0.86-2.24 ppm. We had planned to quantify the major bioactives in S. speciosa and to compare their variation with seasons and altitudes. Maximum concentration of SR 1 and SR2 was found in S. speciosa rhizomes collected from Hemkund (4000 m high), Uttarakhand, India. Overall, results show that the concentration of bioactives increase with altitude and in samples collected in between Sep.-Oct. which seems to be the period of prime potency and should be the harvesting period.

Embelia ribes commonly known as 'Vayuvidang' is an important medicinal plant resource in different Traditional Medicinal Systems of India. In Ayurveda, it is prescribed in anti-estrogenic, anti-fertilitic, cardiopathic and psychopathic formulations. Unsustainable harvesting in wild has led to total depletion of its genetic resources in places like Kolli Hills in the Eastern Ghats. No information is available on the life history traits of this species. Hence, a study was carried out for a period of three years in Silent Valley National Park, Western Ghats to quantify phenology, breeding system and reproduction. E.ribes is pollinated by bees and wasps. Fruits are dispersed by birds and seeds remain dormant for a long period. About 105 individuals were tagged during the study period. E.ribes is poly-gamo dioecious with low male female ratio (1:5). Male flowers were short-lived compared to female flowers. Though the female flowers have anthers, they do not produce pollen. The implication of the breeding system and possible species recovery strategies is dealt in detail.

In vitro screening of antibacterial properties of root, stem and bark of Zanthoxylum rhetsa (Roxb) DC in alcoholic and acetone extract were carried out. Alcoholic and acetone extracts of bark and stem showed antibacterial properties against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimarium, Bacillus megatarium and Escherchia coli. Root extract revealed less anti bacterial properties as compared to bark and stem extracts.

Pathogenic fungi like Curvularia lunata (SPCF1), Fusgrium oxysporum (SPCF2), Oidium heveae (SPCF3) and Pestalotia palmarum (SPCF4) were isolated and identified from diseased leaves. Pseudomonas fluorescens strainA, Pseudomonas fluorescens strainB and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were tested against each of these fungal pathogens. They exhibited biodegradative potentiality in varying degree against these fungal pathogens. Among these bacteria, Pseudomonas fluorescens strainB exhibited better antagonistic effect. More inhibition is noticed in the case of Oidium. The other strains ofPseudomonas exhibited antagonistic property but to a lesser degree than strainB. Pseudomonas strains can be exploited in controlling fungal pathogens.

Reports deals with study of diversity of Desmids from different sites of Jalgaon viz. Hartala lake, Velhala lake, Tapti river, Waghoor river at monthly intervals from October 1998 to September 2000. Twenty five species belonging to the genera Closterium, Cosmarium, Euastrum and Pleurotaenium of family Desmidiaceae were recorded for the first time from this region. Maximum population of Cosmarium was recorded in the month of May while Cosmarium pseudoconnatum and Cosmarium obtusatum were dominant during winter. Closterium sp. flourished well between February to June. Euastrum and Pleurotaenium were rarely observed.

Phytochemical investigations of Stemona species have revealed the presence of alkaloids, stilbenoids, tocopherols (chromenols), etc. Stemona alkaloids constitute a unique chemical feature of the Stemonaceae and cannot be detected so far in any other plant families. Their alkaloid structures are characterized by a pyrrolo[l,2-a]azepine core which can be classified into three types based on biosynthetic consideration i.e. stichoneurine-(tuberostemonine-), protostemonine- and croomine-types of alkaloids. Tuberosa group contains stichoneurine- and croomine-types, demonstrating antitussive activity, while non-tuberosa group contains protostemonine type alkaloid which promotes potent insecticidal activity. Biological testings showed that insecticide and antitussive activities of Stemona are depended on Stemona alkaloids while antifungal activity against plant-pathogenic fungi is depended on the presence of stilbenoids. Moreover, preliminary tests on anticancer and antioxidant activities of some Stemona species have also been reported.

The plantlets survived during screening were transferred into the soil simulated with salinity levels (4 and 6 Ece). The number of tillers per plant were significantly more in variety Co. 7714 (27.93) and Co. 86032 (27.06) against the variety Co. 671 (21.15). Though salinity affects tiller formation, Co. 7714 and Co. 86032 varieties were relatively salt tolerant.

The observations revealed that changes in the mesophyll of mottled cowpea (Vigna Sinensis L.) leaves were more closely crowded, longer and narrower in comparison to healthy leaves. The mesophyll in green areas of infected leaf were identical to healthy one, however mesophyll in yellow areas were reduced in number and smaller in size. In the stem of infected plants, xylem vessels were enlarged and reduced in number. The phloem and xylem were affected in later stage of the growth and showed marked deviations than normal. They were reduced in size. In infected roots, important anatomical changes were also observed in vascular region which shows less developed conducting tissue viz. phloem and xylem.

The effect of different concentrations i.e. 0%, 50% and 100% of distillery effluent on the chlorophyll content of Lawsonia inermis L. (Lytherace) is studied. Distillery effluent was collected from jublbilant organosis Ltd. Gajraula (District J. P. Nagar). The amount of total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and protochlorophylL was found maximum in plants treated with 50% concentration of effluent. However 100% concentration of effluent was found to be inibitory for chlorophyll synthesis. The present findings recommend Lawsonia inermis as a potential plant which can be cultivated near those area affected by the toxicity of distillery effluent. It will not only decrease the soil pollution but will also yield beneficial leaves which cao be commercial used.

In the present study an investigation was carried out to understand the effect of different concentration of Gomutra on seedling growth i.e. root and shoot length, seed vigour index, seed germination inhibition and biological efficiency of seedling. The growth pattern was studied after recording the percentage germination of Lens seed, under the influence of Gomutra (various concentration). At lower concentration the seedlings were observed to have better growth than that at higher concentration. 2% and 4% had a growth promoting effect while beyond 10%, growth was nil. Same types of results were also obtained for the fresh and dry weights of seedlings.

The amount of starch, nitrogen and chlorophyll contents were decreased in both the varieties of infected mango plants compared to control (non-infected) plants.

Reproductive biology of two endemic Aloe species, A. pulcherrima (with rare occurrence) and A. debrana (common) was investigated in central Ethiopia. A. pulcherrima lacks seed germination and hence no recruitment from seed mode; it entirely depends on vegetative mode of propagation in spite of good seed set, satisfactory pollinator activity and high percentage of pollen viability. A. debrana on the other hand showed adequate recruitment from both vegetative and seed modes. The extent of flowering, fruiting and seed set was greater when compared to those in A. pulcherrima. The two species differ in their flowering time in the habitat, A. pulcherima with flowering during June-August and A. debrana during December-February. Therefore, temporal separation of flowering season enables to avoid competition for the same pollinators and also to prevent hybridization between them.

Melissopalynological analysis of honey samples collected during winter and autumn months from the bee hives of Apis indica kept at various localities in Kupza village of Mokokchung district have been investigated. The winter honey samples collected during the months of January and February exhibit pollen grains of 85 genera belonging to 45 families of dicot angiosperms, 5 families of monocot angiosperms and two families of conifers (gymnosperms), whereas the autumn (August - September) honey samples collected from Kubza village contained pollen grains of 37 genera belonging to 23 families of dicots and 3 families of monocot angiosperms. The gymnospermous pollen grains were absent in autumn samples of Kupza village. This quantitative variation in the presence of pollen grains during winter and autumn months has been attributed to the diversity of flowering plants and their periods of anthesis in and around the Kupza village of mokokchung district, Nagaland.

The present article gives comprehensive information on distribution, habitat, local names, present status, market value, taxonomic description, active ingredients, traditional and contemporary uses, propagation, agrotechniques and post harvesting process of the species. We suggest that this technology package should be adopted for increasing crop productivity ensuring sustainable supply of raw material and thus, mitigating harvesting pressure on wild populations of the species. Besides effective conservation management and sustainable utilization, the potential of the species should be adequately harnessed for socio-economic development of rural communities in Himalayan region.

Monthly conidial concentration per litre shows marked seasonal fluctuations for the occurrence of water borne conidial fungi. Attempts were also made to correlate the conidial concentration per litre with the pH, temperature (°C) and dissolve oxygen. Maximum conidial concentration per litre was found during winter season ( 54.90 x 104 conidia/litre in higher altitudinal stream), while minimum conidial concentration per litre was found during summer season (upto 8.00 x 104 conidia/litre in lower altitudinal stream) in both the streams.

Currently the Government of India, realizing the value of the country's vast range of medicinal plants, has marked on a mission of documenting the traditional knowledge about medicinal plants and herbs. One important result of the survey that it revealed a total of 56 different plant species having ethnomedicinal uses. Taxonomically, the plants used by the villagers of this area were classified under 33 families of afigiosperms.

The distributions of most pollinator species are poorly documented despite their importance in providing ecosystem services. While these and other organisms are threatened by many aspects of the human enterprise, anthropogenic climate change is potentially the most severe threat to pollinator biodiversity. Mounting evidence demonstrates that there have already been biotic responses to the relatively small climate changes that have occurred this century. Pollinators such as birds, bees, butterflies, moths, flies, wasps, beetles bats and even mosquitoes are essential for food production because they transfer pollen between seed plants-impacting 35% of the world's crops. Along with providing an essential service to human populations, pollinators also have a key role in maintaining other ecosystem services including ensuring biodiversity and helping nature to adjust to external threats such as climate change. The "pollination crisis" that is evident in declines of honeybees and native bees worldwide is due to disruption of critical balance between the two mutually interacting organisms. Anthropogenic climate change is widely expected to drive species extinct by hampering individual survival and reproduction, by reducing the amount and accessibility of suitable habitat, or by eliminating other organisms that are essential to the species in question. The potential disruption of a ubiquitous mutualistic interaction of terrestrial habitats, that between plants and their animal pollinators, via climate change is at risk.

The combined effect of IAA and low temperature exposure at the seed germination stage, on the process of floral induction in cucumber was analyzed in this experiment. The low temperature exposure to the seeds decreased the days to anthesis of both male and female flowers to 43.25 and 52.25 respectively. Similarly, the average nodal position bearing first male as well as female flower also decreased as compared to control on providing low temperature and/or IAA, alone or in combination at seed germination stage, the reduction being more noteworthy when IAA and low temperature were given in combination. The total No. of female flowers formed, however, increased with the application of low temperature and IAA and, consequently, the ratio of male flowers to female flowers decreased with the increasing concentration of IAA, the reduction being more when low temperature was provided with IAA. The sucrose content was 240.0 μmol/gm fresh weight in control which declined to 237.5, 235.0 and 233.7 μmol g-1 fresh weight in plants which were treated with 25, 50 and 100 mg L-1 IAA respectively at seed germination stage. Exposure to low temperature, however, increased the sucrose content. The application of IAA, on the other hand, resulted in the increase in the starch content during both pre-flowering stage as well as flowering stage. The application of IAA also resulted in a gradual increase in the protein content, and this increase was more when IAA and low temperature were given in combination. However, in contrast to starch, the protein contents were found to be increased when plants experienced a shift from pre-flowering to flowering stage. Application of IAA at seed germination stage, however, decreased the activity of sucrose synthase, the decline being proportional to the concentration of IAA applied. Activity of acid invertase, though, showed a tendency just reverse to that of sucrose synthase. At both, the pre-flowering and flowering stages, low temperature exposure of seeds resulted in a decline in the activity of acid invertase while application of IAA at seed germination stage caused an increase in the activity of the enzyme in a concentration dependent manner. The activity of IAA oxidase at pre-flowering stage was significantly lowered in all the treatments as compared to control with the reduction in the activity being proportional to the concentration of IAA applied. A reduction in the activity of IAA oxidase was observed in all the plants when they experienced a shift from pre-flowering to flowering stage. Polyphenol oxidase, though, showed a trend just opposite to that shown by IAA oxidase. At flowering stage, again just opposite to the IAA oxidase, the activity of polyphenol oxidase increased from that in pre-flowering stage in all the plants. The highest activity during flowering stage was recorded in plants that were raised from seeds treated with 100 mg L-1 IAA at low temperature (0.252 DOD g-1 fresh weight). There was, however, not significant alteration in the peroxidase activity in all the treatments over control; though the peroxidase activity increased slightly on the application of IAA and low temperature as compared to control at both pre-flowering and flowering stages.

After two weeks five seedlings from each petridish were transplanted in pots. The days to anthesis were highest in control for both male and female flowers, which gradually reduced as the increasing concentration of IAA was applied. Similarly, the average nodal position bearing first flower was highest in control which consistently decreased with increasing concentration and duration of IAA treatment. The total No. of male flowers showed a declining trend with the increasing application of IAA. However, percentage of pollen sterility were increased in plants raised from seeds that were applied with 25, 50 and 100 mg L-1 IAA for 24 hr respectively. Number of female flowers formed, was markedly increased over control with the elevation of IAA concentration. Total sucrose content during pre-flowering stage was highest (240.0 μmol g-1 fresh weight) in control but on treatment with IAA it decreased to significantly lower value of 197.5 μmol g-1 fresh weight in plants grown from seeds treated with 100 mg L-1 IAA for 72 hr. There was a decline in the sucrose content as well when flowering took place in all the plants. The highest concentration of starch at pre-flowering stage was observed in plants raised from seeds that were given 100 mg L-1 IAA for 72 hr (0.350 mg g-1 fresh weight), a significant difference from control. The starch content, however, was lowered at the flowering stage as compared to pre-flowering stage in all the plants. Total protein content, also, increased over control with the increasing concentration and duration of IAA application. During pre-flowering stage the sucrose synthase activity consistently decreased as compared to control with the increasing concentration of IAA. Activity of acid invertase, though, showed a trend just opposite to that of sucrose synthase. At pre-flowering acid invertase activity was 104.24 μmol g-1 fresh weight in control which increased to 116.25 μmol g-1 fresh weight when 25 mg L-1 IAA was applied to seeds for 24 hr. In contrast to the activity of IAA oxidase, the activity of polyphenoloxidase (PPO) as well as of peroxidase increased in both the conditions - when plants switched from pre-flowering stage to flowering stage and also when IAA was applied, the concentration and duration again show a cumulative effect.

Seeds of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), variety Jyoti Green Long, were exposed to low temperature (4°C) for - 0 (as control), 24, 48 and 72 hr and then allowed to germinate and grow in normal conditions for two weeks inside the laboratory. After two weeks five seedlings from each petridish were transplanted in pots and their development patterns up to anthesis were observed using morphological and biochemical (metabolites and enzyme activity) parameters. It was observed that exposure of seeds to low temperature had a profound effect on the flowering response in cucumber. Except the pollen sterility and the total No. of female flowers formed, all the morphological parameters studied viz. days to anthesis of male and female flowers; number of node bearing 1st male or female flower, total male flowers formed and ratio of male flowers to female flowers were decreased as compared to control, when low temperature was given for 24 and 48 hr; but different effect was observed on exposing to low temperature for 72 hr. The sucrose and starch content was found to increase with an increase in the duration of low temperature exposure to seeds up to 48 hr, beyond which it decreased significantly at 72 hr exposure, both at pre-flowering and flowering stages while the total protein content showed a different trend though. The activity of sucrose synthase increased significantly with increase in duration of low temperature up to 48 hours beyond which it decreased when compared to control. Similarly the activity of sucrose synthase decreased from pre-flowering to flowering stage in plants raised from seeds that were exposed to low temperature for 24, 48 and 72 hr respectively. Activity of acid invertase showed a trend just opposite to that of sucrose synthase. IAA oxidase showed a definite reduction in the activity with the increased duration of low temperature exposure. While at pre-flowering stage it was highest in control, the activity decreased significantly in plants which were raised from the seeds subjected to low temperature for 24, 48 and 72 hr respectively. The polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity also increased markedly when plants experienced transition from pre-flowering to flowering stage. A similar trend to that of PPO was observed in case of peroxidase activity.

Induction of mutation has been used to create additional genetic variability in grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.). During the ongoing investigations on different induced-morphological mutants, the author detected three types of dwarf mutants in grass pea. One mutant, designated as dwf1 type was earlier identified in colchicine-induced C2 generation of grass pea variety BioR-231 while the other two, designated as dwf2 and dwf3 were isolated in 250 Gy and 300 Gy gamma ray irradiated M2 progeny of variety 'BioR-231' and 'Hooghly Local', respectively. As compared to their parental varieties (controls), all the three mutants manifested stunted, erect and determinate stem, early maturity and tolerance to pod shattering habit. The mutants differed from each other, as well as with controls, in number of primary branches, nature of stipules and internodes, length of peduncle, leaflet and seed coat colour, seed yield and seed neurotoxin content. The three dwarf mutants were monogenically recessive and bred true in successive generations. F2 segregation pattern obtained from the crosses involving the three mutants indicated that dwarf mutation in grass pea was controlled by two independent non-allelic genes, assigned as df1 (for dwf1 type), df2 (for dwf2 type) and df3 (for dwf3 type), with the df1 locus being multiple allelic. Primary trisomic analyses revealed the presence of df1/df2 locus on the extra chromosome of trisomic type I, whereas df3 was located on the extra chromosome of type III. Linkage studies involving five other phenotypic markers suggested linked association of df1df2 locus with Ifc (leaflet colour) and wgn (winged internode) and df3 locus with cbl (seed coat colour). Both the loci; however, assorted independently with flower colour and stipule character. The dwarf types can be utilized as valuable tools for further cytogenetic research and breeding of grass pea.

Abscission of debladed petioles in two varieties viz. altissima and sabdariffa of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. was observed following application of lanolin-plant hormone(s) paste at the cut ends of debladed petioles. Plant growth hormones viz. GA3, KN, 1AA, ETH, and ABA were used in different concentrations. The two tested varieties showed the same response to the applied plant growth hormones in lanolin paste. Investigations again confirmed the abscission retarding nature of GAs, KN, IAA and abscission accelerating nature of ETH and ABA in this plant as shown in experiments with intact leaves and explants petioles. The retardation and acceleration effects have been highly significant and progressive with increasing concentrations of the hormones.

The growth characteristics of Pyricularia grisea (Cook) sacc (teleomorph, Magnaporthe grisea (Hebert) Barr, the blast pathogen of more than 50 graminicious hosts, including rice and small millets, can be easily studied on artificial medium. For this, oat meal agar medium is widely used for in vitro culture as well as sporulation of P. grisea, which however is quite expensive. Therefore, a study was designed to develop and evaluate cultural characteristics of P. grisea isolates obtained from Eleusine coracana (finger millet) on media derived from rice and finger millets, viz. rice leaf agar, ragi leaf agar, and ragi flour agar. Growth characteristics such as vegetative growth, sporulation and production of perfect stage were recorded and compared with those obtained on oat meal agar. Results revealed that ragi flour media recorded better growth and sporulation of P. grisea at 28°C and pH 7.5 than other three media. Abundant perithecia were produced on ragi flour media at 20-22°C when compared to other media. The study revealed that ragi flour media was the cheapest and effective medium, and a good replacement of the expensive oatmeal agar medium for the growth, sporulation and production of perithecia of P. grisea under artificial conditions.

Variegata, B. tomentosa are identified on the basis of variously coloured petals, number of leaf veins 7-13, number of fertile stamens varing from 3-10, and size of the fruit.

Jatropha curcas L. attracting considerable global interest due to its potential use as a biofuel crop as well as its potential to grow in any type of soil type. The phytotoxicity imposed by cadmium (Cd) and its detoxifying responses of Jatropha curcas L. have been investigated. J. curcas L. exposed to various concentrations of cadmium (0, 10, 25, 50, 100 mM) and accumulated good amount of cadmium in various plant parts with increasing concentration. Effect on biomass, photosynthetic pigments and protein level were evaluated as gross effect, while lipid peroxidation reflected oxidative stress cadmium induced lipid peroxidation with increase in metal concentration. Toxic effects of cadmium on plant were reflected by the reductions in photosynthetic pigments, protein at higher concentrations. Enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants were monitored as plants primary and metal detoxifying responses. Enzymes viz., superoxide dismutase guaiacol peroxidase and ascorbate peroxidase showed stimulation at lower concentrations except catalase which showed declining trend. Initially, cysteine, and non-protein thiols was found increased at lower concentrations, which depleted with increase in concentration. However plant showed progressive increase in proline content at all concentrations. The study concludes that plant could grow under cadmium stress and protect themselves from phytotoxicity of Cd by altering various metabolic processes.

Five different herbicides fluchloralin, metlachlor, pendimethalin, oxadiargyl and oxyfluorfen were evaluated against S. rolfsii in three different concentrations i.e. 0.5 X (half of the recommended), X (recommended) and 2X (double of the recommended) and periodic observations were recorded on the radial growth of S, rolfsii with a view to find out a suitable herbicide having suppressive action against S. rolfsii. All the herbicides showed marked inhibition in radial growth of S. rolfsii however fluchloralin drastically reduced the radial growth of pathogen.

During this survey identified 221 species of plants belonging to 63 families, wich consist of Algae 20 species, Lichens 2 species, Bryophytes 08 species, Pteridophytes 08 species, Gymnosperms 06 species. Angiosperms including Monocotyledons 27 species, 23 Genara, 04 family, and Dicotyledons 150 species, 121 Genera, 46 Families, were recorded. Three species i.e Hyptis suaveolens, Lantana camara, and parthenium hvsterophorus, were found as invasive weed species.

Anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive activity of ethyl acetate leaf extract of Caesalpinia bonducella were studied through carrageenan, histamine, hot plate and acetic acid induced models, respectively. In this investigation, of the two doses i.e. 166.7 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg body weight, 250 mg/kg body weight was found to be more potent and efficacious towards the anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity when compared to control and the activity was dose dependent. Since, there are no reports on anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive activities of ethyl acetate leaf extract of Caesalpinia bonducella, the present study evidences the traditional use of C. bonducella as anti-inflammatory and an analgesic.

Indigofera is a large genus of about 700 species of flowering plants. Variation in legume species and their wild relatives are of prime importance to the successful breeding of improved crop cultivars with added value and durable resistance to pest. One such important but obscure wild legume is Indigofera. Morphological features have proved to be of immense assistance in interpreting problems related to plant classification.
