Wild-Olive, belonging to family Boraginaceae, is a North American evergreen tree. This small tree is very rarely found and is even reported close to extinction. Its conservation and multiplication, therefore, requires its ex-situ conservation in Botanical Gardens and arboreta. It introduced plant in the Desert Lead Botanical Garden at Jodhpur are now 3-4 m tall with 3.5x4 m crown spread. In order to further multiply it, phenocycle and other details were investigated. Results revealed that of the three times flowering in a year, it is the early winter flowering that yielded mature fruits and seeds. Some success in seed germination and survival is also reported.

Macroscopic fungi were collected from a few localities in Tamilnadu to document their distribution and diversity. Gilled mushroom are short lived, abundant soon after the monsoon where as the Polyporus species could be collected for a prolonged periods. The present survey includes 26 species from different habitats. Maximum number of species were belong to the family Agaricaceae followed by Polyporaceae. The most common genera are Polyporus. Agaricus nivescens, Calocybe gambosa, Ganoderma lucidum, Geastrum fimbriatum, Lentinus tigrinus, Pleurotus ostreatus, Polyporus badius, Polyporus umbellatus, Schizophyllum commune and Panaeolus papilionaceus are edible. This is the preliminary survey of collection and identification of macroscopic fungi as this has not been done in this part of India. This study also envisages further study on the usefulness of these fungi in terms of their nutritive and medicinal values.

Kunda Khoh is one of the famous Khohs of Baran district of Rajasthan, India. This Khoh is one of endemic species centres of Vindhyan range. A field survey of the study area was carried out from 2007 to 2010 in all the seasons of the year to document the biodiversity of the area. During the survey a total number of 221 wild plant species belonging to 186 genera of 70 families were recorded from the study area. Systematic enumeration of flora of Kunda Khoh has been mentioned along with their family. This area is especially rich in Mellettia extense, Vitis auriculata, Naringi crenulata, Ziziphus oenoplia, Schleichera oleosa, Buchanania lanzan, Mimosa himalayana, Lagerstroemia parviflora, Ficus microcarpa ete.

Diseased tomato fruits of cv. Marglobe collected from markets of Jammu city yielded 25 isolates of A. flavus. These isolates were analyzed for their aflatoxin producing potential after inoculation into healthy and ripe tomatoes of the same variety. Results showed that 64% of the pathogenic A. flavus isolates were toxigenic and were detected to be positive for aflatoxins AFB₁ and AFB₂ Quantitatively, AFB₁ and AFB₂ detected in the A. flavus infected tomatoes cv. Marglobe were considerably high, ranging from 141.6 - 1481.3 and 49.0 - 2497.6 μg^-1 respectively, that was much beyond the regulatory limit of 20 μg kg^-1 fixed by WHO, and represents a potential hazard, considering that these toxins may be transferred into processed food products.

Floristic study was conducted in Mandargiri hills of Angul district, Odisha. Total 190 species belonging to 159 genera and 62 families were identified from these sites. The contribution of dicotyledons, monocotyledons, gymnosperms and pteridophytes was 86.84%, 10.52%, 0.52% and 2.1% respectively. Acacia, Dioscorea and Ficus were the most dominant genera having 4 species each. Fabaceae was the most dominant families having 17 species followed by Rubiaceae (8), Verbenaceae (8), Apocynaceae (8), Mimosaceae (7), Euphorbiaceae (7), Lamiaceae (6), Combret-aceae (6), Caesalpiniaceae (5), Anacardiaceae (5) etc. Among the total number of plant species 82 (43.15%) were trees, 22 (11.57%) shrubs, 61 (32.1%) herbs, and 25 (13.15%) climbers including lianas.

Among the different types of anastomoses type II is most frequently and type III is less in amount, and other intermediate types are type IV, type I and type V in accordance with percentage anastomoses. Total numbers of dichotomies in each petal varies from 13 to 30. Very rare case, type "A" (after Arnott, 1959) and blind vein ending within an areole have been noted.

Trichoderma species are well known antagonists which have strong bio-control potential against soilborne phytopathogenic fungi. Five potential isolates of Trichoderma hazianum were isolated from two different types of soils in which two were from alfisol (mango and litchi orchards) of the ICAR RCER Research Centre, Plandu, Ranchi, Jharkhand, India and three were from the inceptisol (Eastern Uttar Pradesh) India using Trichoderma Selective Medium (TSM) and characterized. Two alfisol (native) isolates (Th-4 and Th-5) along with three inceptisol isolates of Varanasi (Th-1, Th-2 and Th-3) were used in screening of antagonistic potential against two phytopathogenic sclerotial fungi Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium rolfsii in dual culture. Among the isolates, the local/native ones isolated from alfisol have shown potential antagonism and inhibited R. solani with percent inhibition of 46.77 and 50.34 as compared to inceptisol isolates with inhibition percentage of 22.33, 26.21 and 23.08 respectively. The alfisol isolates also showed potential antagonism against S. rolfsii with percent inhibition of 44.67 and 47.88 as compared to inceptisol isolates with inhibition percentage of 3.97, 7.97 and 28.72 respectively. Compared to inceptisol isolates, biomass accumulation and total phenol content was also reported high in the alfisol isolates.

Vitex trifolia Linn., a small tree belonging to the family Verbenaceae, is a potential drug in Homoeopathy. The root bark is used in sprains, headache, pains in joint, abdomen and testicles. It is also considered as Indian Arnica. The root bark is brownish grey, rough, with lenticels over the surface. The phellem or cork is scanty, undulated and stratified. The phelloderm possess tangentially elongated cells with dense contents often traversed with groups of stone cells. Secondary phloem is abundant, interrupted by 2 - 4 seriate medullary rays, and interspersed with bands of stone cells. Besides, powder microscopical and organoleptic characters are presented. Physico -chemical parameters of raw drug, viz., extractive values, ash values, formulation besides wt. per ml., total solids, alcohol content and HPTLC and U.V. studies are given for the mother tincture.

Various chemicals and growth regulators can improve seed germination, seedling growth and vigour. Such biologically active compounds are also present in smoke. Available research literature from the most reputed sources indicates that the discovery of role of smoke in enhancing germination was done by De Lange and Bowsher in 1990. But, in fact, credit of this discovery should be given to Indian scientists (P. Parija, PD Dixit and GV Challam) who found in 1940 (50 years earlier than De Lange and Bowsher) that dormancy in paddy can be broken by smoking the seeds. The growth promoting response due to smoke treatment is due to the presence of butenolides (or karrikins) and cyanohydrins. In the present study, maize seeds were imbibed in different dilutions of smoke water derived from wheat plants and the seedling growth was measured at 21 days after sowing. The diluted smoke water (200x) treatment lead to enhancement in growth as compared to control. It was as follows : seedling height (12.2%), maximum root depth (44.3%), leaf area per plant (30.4%), leaf area per leaf (26.6%), total root length per plant (106.3%), root weight per plant (37.5%), shoot weight per plant (19.3%), leaf weight per plant (30%), leaf weight per leaf (27%) and total dry matter per plant (23.6%). The most significant increase was observed in :terms of root growth. Such smoke based treatments also have several potential advantages in terms of simplicity, cost-effectiveness and no risk to environment and health. Further research studies and standardization can make smoke water treatment a useful technology for better management of different crops.

Barak Valley of Assam falls under the part of three districts - Cachar, Karimganj and Haila-kandi, with the boundaries of North Cachar Hills District, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura and Sylhet of Bangladesh. This valley is, although, covered with vast tracts of the forests in southern, eastern and northern sides, but due to rapid depletion maximum areas are now altered with mixed floristic elements influenced by a number of exotic species. Moreover, the climatic condition of the valley is one of the ideal home for the growth and establishment of herbaceous and shrubby species. With the result of survey of 10 years (2001-2010), nearly 53 species are recorded which have invaded the valley, and a few have formed thick populations replacing the indigenous flora. Being most of them of tropical origin, the tropical climatic conditions of valley have been favourable to their establishment, growth and development.

Abundance and flower visitation rate of the pollinators of Cadaba fruiticosa (Linn) Druce (Capparidaceae), a butterfly pollinated shrub was studied over a 3-year period. The objective was to elucidate interspecific differences in the "quantity" component of the plant-pollinator interaction. The plant was solely visited by three butterfly species of the family Pieridae. These 3 pollinator species differed in flower visitation rate (0.046 - 0.113 flowers/min). This variation was explained by differences in flower handling time (HT) i.e. TF/NF. Though the proboscis length of Colotis eucharis and C.danae were equal (17mm), the HT was differed. Anapheis aurota had longer proboscis (20mm) than the other two species and HT were also high. The total no. of visits that each pollinator contributed to the plant (NFV) was estimated as the product of abundance and visitation rate. The results revealed that C. eucharis was more effective pollinator to C.fruiticosa and the pollinator effectiveness influenced by foraging behavior.

Chlorophyll fluorescence analysis provides a sensitive and near instantaneous measurement of the behavior of photosynthetic system during and after stress. The photosystem II (PS II) activity during gradual re-hydration and de-hydration of desiccation tolerant cyanobacterium Scytonema geitleri was studied in intact cells/mats. Three types dry, GSDR (grown but slowly dried) and GQDR (grown but quickly dried) mats of the cyanobacterium on re-hydration at 0 MPa osmotic water potential for different time periods in light, showed enhancement in the values of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters Fo (minimal fluorescence level with all PSII reaction centers open), Fv (variable fluorescence in dark adapted state), Fv/Fm (maximum efficiency of PSII photochemistry in dark adapted state), ΔF/Fm' (quantum yield of PSII electron transport), Fv'/Fm'(efficiency of excitation capture by open reaction centers of PSII) and qP (photochemical fluorescence quenching coefficient; oxidation state of PSII) with increasing incubation periods in intact cells/mats. Contrary to this, qN (non-photochemical fluorescence quenching coefficient) showed first gradual increase and then decreasing pattern in all the mats A decreasing pattern in the values of Fm, Fv, Fv/Fm, Fv'/Fm' ΔF/Fm' and qP in cells/mats on lowering of the water potentials (dehydration) was observed. Different pattern of first increase then decrease on lowering of matric water potentials was observed in qN. Decrease in the values of fluorescence parameters on de-hydration of wetted mats may be accompanied by an alteration of the inner structure and composition of the thylakoid membranes. Increase in the values of fluorescence parameters on re-hydration of dry mats favor the possibilities of `repair' by means of re-synthesis and/ or re-arrangement of the damaged/changed composition of thylakoid membranes of the desiccation tolerant cyanobacterium Scytonema geitleri, on re-wetting.

Ethnobotanical investigation carried out by the author in different village localities, forest areas, eco regions and agro climatic zones of Madhya Pradesh from 1986 to 2007 inspired to prepare and contribute this paper. Paper presented an account of 733 plant species belonging to 126 families and 385 genera utilized as food, famine food during scarcity by the tribal, local villagers, forest dwellers, etc. in Madhya Pradesh. Individual Edibility Percentage (IE%) of each species revealed that IU% classes A represented (16%) plant species whereas B (33%), C (50), D (60%) and E (more than 60%) recorded 459, 189, 61, 1 and 11 species. Different part(s) namely (1) Rhizomes/Roots, (2) Stem/Shoots, (3) Leaves, (4) Flowers, (5) Fruits/Berries/Pods and (6) Seeds represented 80, 114, 240, 68,361 and 204 respectively.

Mycorrhizae are ubiquitous in terrestrial ecosystems throughout the world. There has been a great appreciation and the importance of AM fungi for improvement of the plant growth. Detail field studies are necessary to understand the abundance and type of Indigenous Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) present in the rhizosphere. Specially, the rhizosphere soil features are very essential to study, because it plays key role in mycorrhizal distribution. The authors have aimed at the detail study of AMF species to investigate the characteristics, occurrence and distribution in rhizosphere soil from Akola region. There were 21 rhizosphere soil samples collected from different places in Akola district. These samples were analyzed for their mycorrhizal status. The spore density and their taxonomic status were worked out. Altogether 29 different AM fungal species were recovered from these samples. The results depict that the Glomus fascicultum and Glomus aggregatum are the most dominant AM fungi. Present work would confirm the occurrence of mycorrhizal fungi in rhizosphere soil and will open new vistas in this fascinating field of mycorrhiza.

India occupies third place to produce oil seeds in the world. India has vast area of about 19 million hectares under oilseed crops In order to formulate management practices for the control of necrosis disease of sunflower; reliable tests are required for its detection. Such tests are lacking in India. Sunflower is widely cultivated in India. Sunflower crop is extensively cultivated in Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh. Sunflower showed symptom of virus disease characterised by severe mosaic, necrosis of leaves, necrosis along the stems and floral parts, malformation of young leaves, markedly reduced leaves and stunting of plants. Hence, in this study, direct antigen coating-enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (DAC-ELISA), Double antibody sandwich-ELISA (DAS-ELISA) and Dot-ELISA tests were evaluated for the detection of sunflower necrosis a tospo virus (SfNV) causing necrosis disease of sunflower in Andhra Pradesh in India. In DAC-ELISA, Sunflower Necrosis Virus was detected up to 0.370 μg/mL in purified virus preparation and up to 10-4 dilution in leaf sap extracted from virus infected sunflower leaves. In Dot-ELISA, Sunflower Necrosis Virus was detected up to 0.0370μg/mL in purified virus preparation and up to 10-5 dilution in leaf sap from infected sunflower leaves. Where as in DAS-ELISA the virus was detected up to 370 μg/mL and 10-3 dilution in purified virus preparation and in leaf sap extracted from infected sunflower leaves, respectively. Hence, it is concluded that DAC-ELISA and Dot-ELISA were found to be the suitable tests for the detection of Sunflower necrosis virus.

Influence of different concentrations (1, 2, 5 & 10%) of Spirodela polyrrhiza extract in distilled water on germination and tube growth of Hordeum vulgare has been studied. Pollen grains from fresh flowers of H. vulgare were collected early in the morning before anthesis. Obsevations were recorded 60 minutes after pollen culture at 20 ± 0.5°C and 100% relative humidity. Results showed that lower concentrations (1%, 2% & 5%) enhanced pollen growth. Maximum percentage germination (76.0%) and tube growth (234.509μm) were observed with 5% S. polyrrhiza extract in the evening followed by morning and noon. Finally one can conclude that S. polyrrhiza extract enhanced pollen germination and tube growth of barley plant.

The results were statistically analyzed to determine correlation and coefficient of correlation between them and conclusion was drawn. Scatter diagrams and values of coefficient of correlation between number of diatom and fourteen parameters are presented in paper.Result obtain suggest that area under study is pollution free.

In this communication, 22 plants of ethnobotanical importance have been made which are used today by tribal people in Jhargram block, Paschim Medinipur. These include plants producing underground parts like corm, tuber, rhizome, tuberous roots and above ground parts like vegetables, unripe fruits, and flowers including floral buds, inflorescence, seeds, and ripe fruits. All these under the category like food, antidotes, fish stupefying agents, plants of fumitories, medicines, dyes, agricultural implements, stuffing beds and pillows, jewelers, oils, musical instruments, traps, alcoholic drinks, fiber and flosses, feed and fodder for pet animals. Here, only plants used in vegetables as well as for fodder purposes have been described.

Bagmara Forest Block is located in the southernmost part of Sundarbans Tiger Reserve (STR). It is one of the 15 Blocks present in the STR and situated within the 'Core area' of STR with 8 different compartments designated as 1 to 8. The floral diversity in the form of mangroves, mangrove associated plants, back mangroves, beach flora and different kinds of parasites, epiphytes, mistletoes were studied extensively and documented. A total no. of 62 plant species were collected, identified and recorded on the basis of their distributional pattern, dominance and different kinds of association groups. Out of 62 species, 22 species appeared to be true mangrove, 21 species were mangrove associated plants, 11 were back mangroves, 5 were beach flora and 3 were parasitic. 37 association groups were determined. The objective of the study is to help the forester and scientist by giving the actual status of the floral composition of that particular Block of STR.

India harbours over 45,000 species of plants including 17,500 Angiosperms comprising about 4000 medicinal plants. The indigenous knowledge about medicinal plants is degrading. So authors have to conserve these Ethno-medicinal plants as it can help to discover new drugs and also provide a large scale income source to the rural people. Therefore to protect the plants from various threats and adverse biotic effects, Govt. of India has taken a number of steps such as ban over export of commercial plants under CITES, amendment of the Indian Wild life protection act-1972 to include plants in its schedules to prohibit trade, declaration of Biosphere reserves, National parks and Wild life Sanctuaries. The present paper deals with study of about 300 plants used by the ethnic people from Koyna region. Methodology, forest types, enumeration of 50 medicinal plants used by rural poor for health and livelihood security is mentioned. Environmental impact (biotic and abiotic) on the vegetation and conservation aspects is discussed.

Plant diversity of the islanded forest areas and cardamom plantations were studied and 1044 species of flowering plants were recognised. Of these, 395 are endemic to the southern Western Ghats and 38 species are rare or threatened. Mathikettan Chola is the largest forested area in the CHR and there are 740 species of plants, of which 346 are endemic to Western Ghats. The percentage of endemism is 39%, which is more than that of any other forested areas in Kerala. The future of Cardamom, a spice that depends on tree shade for normal growth, is totally decided by the vegetation of the High Ranges. Reduction of forest cover in the Western Ghats, i.e., 25.6% by the last quarter of the 20th century is due to the conversion of cardamom plantations to other crops that require no forest cover. The reduction of forest cover is predicted as one of the detrimental factors for the future of cardamom plantations in the CHR.

Syzygium cuminii (wild jamun) is one of the most important wild fruit tree having great medicinal value. The present investigation was undertaken for characterizing wild jamun genotypes using DNA marker technology. Twenty three genotypes of wild Jamun comprising of twenty one from Andaman and Nicobar Islands and two from mainland were selected for analysis. A set of 30 ISSR and 20 RAPD primers were taken for DNA fingerprinting, among them 17 ISSR and 19 RAPD primers produced 70 and 126 amplicons out of which 43 and 70 amplicons were polymorphic having 61.4 and 55.5% polymorphism, respectively. The maximum discriminating band was obtained from primer ISSR8 and OPA7. Cluster analysis divided the all genotypes into five clusters with both RAPD and ISSR markers. The present study has not only differentiated islands genotypes from mainland but even clustered genotypes separately. The genotype collected from Car Nicobar was distinct with both RAPD and ISSR markers.

Density and frequency of woody species of 24 reserve forest areas were estimated in Alwar district of Rajasthan (27°4' to 28°4' north latitude and 76°7' to 76°13' east longitude ). Forty five woody species consisting of 25 tree and 20 shrub species were recorded in the study samples. Anogeissus pendula is the dominant tree with highest density varying from 17.4 per 100m² in the Rajgarh to 7.9 per 100m² in the Laxmangarh forest range. It is uniformly distributed with 100 per cent frequency in 5 out of 6 forest ranges.Among the shrubs, Capparis sepiaria, C. decidua and Grewia flavescens grow in almost all the forest ranges. Acacia catechu, Commiphora wightii, Mimosa hamata, Sterculia ureas and Tecomella undulata are the rare species of these forests. A gymnosperm, Ephedra foliata grows in the Jakharana forest of the Behror range. The alien invasive species, Prosopis juliflora has invaded with density varying from 6.9 to 2.0 per 100m² almost all forest areas in Alwar district.

Estimation of nutritive contents is essential for efficient utilization of available fodder plant as a whole or its parts for livestock. In the present study, crude proteins, crude fat (ether extract), carbohydrate and mineral elements - calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, iron, zinc and manganese were estimated from different parts of four rare plants - Monsonia heliotropioides, Seetzenia lanata, Psoralea odorata and Ceropegia bulbosa growing in Rajasthan desert. Analysis revealed that all species contained high amount of crude proteins ranged from 8.29 to 26.24%. Crude fat was found to be maximum 6.75% in fruits of Psoralea odorata and minimum 0.18% in stem of Seetzenia Janata. The concentration of mineral elements ranged between 1.01 to 1.69% (Calcium), 0.48 to 1.69% (Phosphorous), 103 to 168 mg/100 gdw (Magnesium), 2.1 to 7.2 mg/100 gdw (Copper), 34.2 to 87.3 mg/100 gdw (Iron), 1.2 to 3.2 mg/100 gdw (Zinc) and 1.0 to 8.7 mg/100 gdw (Manganese). High nutritive and mineral contents of desert plants make them better fodder.
