Indigofera hochstetteri Baker, belonging to Fabaceae, is recollected in Karnataka after a gap of more than nine decades. It was collected in Jyalawadgi, Gadag district, Mamdapur, Bijapur district and Buksagar, Bellary district. Among the Indigofera L. species, I. hochstetteri has dorsiventrally flattened pods, which is considered as a key character for identifying this species in the Indian subcontinent. In this study wound healing activity of aqueous and alcoholic extracts of bark of Acacia catechu (Fabaceae) was evaluated. This plant is common in the forests of India and Burma. It is used as a mouthwash for mouth, gum, sore throat, gingivitis, dental and oral infections. It is useful in cough, diarrhea, ulcers, boils and eruptions of the skin. . Successive extraction of bark of A. catechu was carried out using different solvents viz., alcohol and water. Results confirm the presence of phytoconstituents like glycosides, carbohydrates, proteins, saponins, phytosterols, tannins, gums in the acacia catechu bark. The aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Acacia catechu bark in the form of an ointment with two different concentrations (2% and 4% w/w) were evaluated for wound healing potential in excision wound model, incision model and dead space wound model in rats. Aquatic vegetation is an essential component of the aquatic ecosystem. Efforts are always made to curtail the excessive growth of aquatic plants in order to prevent them from becoming a nuisance in the ecosystem. One of the ways of solving such problem is the positive economic use of such plants. In the present study an attempt have been made to enumerate the macrophytes and their utilization in a fresh-water lentic water body (Borobandh) at Muchipara in Durgapur, West Bengal, India. As many as 52 species of macrophytes belonging to 26 families have been enumerated and their potential utilization has been evaluated. The present investigation revealed the multifarious uses of macrophytes viz., as a source of medicines (Alternanthera sessilis, Bacopa monnieri, Centella asiatica etc.), foods (Commelina paludosa, Enhydra fluctuans, Hygrophila difformis etc.), fodder (Brachiaria ramosa, Echinochloa colona etc.), compost or green manure (Salvinia cuculata, Vallisneria spiralis etc.), soil binder (Fimbristylis dichotoma, Panicum repens), biofertilizers (Azolla pinnata) and other uses (Cyperus exaltatus, Vetiveria zizanioides). These aquatic resources need optimum commercial exploitation for the upliftment of local stake holder.

The study gives an account on the diversity of medicinal plants and priority medicinal plants for conservation. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are known to influence plant growth by various direct or indirect mechanisms. In search of efficient PGPR strains with high activity of IAA, a total of 58 isolates belonging to Pseudomonas, Azotobacter and Bacillus were screened for plant growth promoting trait ie. indole acetic acid (IAA).The eighteen isolates (nine Azotobacter, six Pseudomonas and three Bacillus) were evaluated for quantitative IAA production. All the Azotobacter isolates shown to produce higher range (95.60-175.20 μg/ml) of IAA, while Pseudomonas produced (44.40- 95.00 μg/ml) IAA. More interestingly all Bacillus isolates also shown high potential of producing in the range of 95.60-170.20 μg/ml of IAA. The isolate Azt5, Bc1 and Bc3 tolerated 7% NaCl concentration.

This study purposed to identify the ethnobotalical aspect of Noken as one of traditional products that has been used for fit out a wide range of needs from high mountain indigenous community. Implicitly, Noken is defined as a traditional bag which produced from forest product materials particularly inner-bark of selective trees that are composed by weaving in traditional ways. In everyday lives, the people used it for meet many purposes such as carrying gardens products and food from their garden field even up to bringing their babies. Moreover, in the cultural ceremony, it always portrayed as a unity symbols and epitome togetherness in their social community. People was being informant deliberately chosen as much as 10-15% of the total population sample for each experimental location. Data was gathered through observation, interviews and focused group discussion (FGD) with people which is strongly influenced in the communities and be Noken-makers. Data gathered included indigenous knowledge of plants used and other indigenous practices and perceptions pertaining to manage and preserve Noken as a highly cultural symbol. There are 8 species of plant that used for making Noken belong to three families. The process is still fairly simple and length of processing time depending on the size desired.

Biochemical changes were observed from healthy and artificially inoculated carbendazim resistant (AnO and sensitive (An9) isolates of sapota fruit caused by Aspergillus rager. There was a significant variation between healthy and infected fruit which showed significant changes with respect to estimation of total sugar, reducing sugar, non reducing sugar, TSS, phenol, total ash, crude protein, Ascorbic acid and tannin. Among them, total sugar (28.2 gm/l00ml) was increased in healthy fruits. But phenol (118.8gm/100ml) it was decreased in healthy fruits as compared with infected fruits. Infected fruit of Man.ilkara achras by both resistant and sensitive isolates reduced the contents of all parameters. This was more pronounced due to utilization of nutritent compounds of the fruits by fungal pathogen for their growth and metabolism which causes fruit pulp deterioration.

Four (4) cattle herds were used for forage sample collection in Egbado North local Government area of Ogun State. The area is in the derived savannah zone where a large variety of herbage abounds for ruminant nutrition. A total of forty-one (41) samples were collected and classified as grasses, shrubs and legumes. The samples were identified and analysed for dry matter, crude protein, crude fibre, ether extracts, ash, gross energy and acid detergent fibre. The results obtained from this study showed that a wide variety of forages - grasses, shrubs and leguminous species abound in Egbado North. Elusine indica, Paspalum scrobiculatum, Pennisetum purpureum and Rottboellia exaltata had the highest frequency and distribution among grasses. Gomphrena celosoides was the most prevalent shrub sampled in the area while Centrosema pubescens showed higher frequency among the leguminous species adapted to the zone. Forages in the study area had high dry matter content, possibly due to the time they were sampled. Crude protein level was highest in leguminous species than in the other groups of forages while the fibre fractions were highest for the grasses sampled in the area. The gross energy obtained from the shrubs and legumes were similar and higher than values obtained in the grasses sampled. The results further showedl that the sampled forages in Egbado North have high potentials to meet the requirement of ruminant animals if adequately utilized.

Sacred groves are one of the finest examples of traditional in situ conservation practices and act as treasure house of endemic, endangered and rare plants. Endemic species of any geographical region, throw light on the biogeography of the area, areas of extinction and evolution of the flora. Six famous sacred groves of Kannur district were selected for study. Studies were aimed at the documentation of floristic diversity with special reference to endemic plants and to know threats to them. The vascular flora of the studied groves comprises 341 species belonging to 265 genera distributed among 99 families, with 329 angiosperms, 11 Pteridophytes and Gnetum ula Brongn. Major attraction are the presence of 48 endemic (14.1%), 80 edible (23.5%), 269 medicinal (78.9%) and 7 critically endangered plants. Only 10 plants are common to all the groves while among endemic plants only three show common presence, making them an important gene pool. The percentage of endemic plants ranges from a minimum of 11 in Andallur to a maximum of 18.1 in Edayilakkad.

Despite the continued efforts being made by government and policy makers to articulate ways of preserving biodiversity and its associated knowledge systems, a limited success has been recorded in environmental learning for conservation. The 'biodiversity contests' among younger generations of native people, and 'recipe contests' of uncommon forest plants and field crops among rural women are two important methods that have been devised to reduce erosion of indigenous biodiversity based knowledge systems. This paper demonstrates about the contests based approaches applied in mobilizing rural and school children, and elders of Adi tribe to enhance their ecological knowledge about local plant species. These contests were organized among Adi school children and rural women, respectively of East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Different events including radio talks, public meetings, contact with key individuals, circulation of posters and pamphlets and group discussions were organized to sensitize the members about events. In second phase, individual schools and villages were contacted to set-up the biodiversity and recipe contests. Results indicated that school children demonstrated encouraging results by presenting systematic herbaria of local plants, including uses, ecology and source of learning. The children from rural backgrounds had more knowledge than those from more settled areas, and were able to contribute more than 100 forest and semi-forest plants in their collections. Sampling and preparation of herbarium excelled knowledge among children about local species. Creation of vertical knowledge networks among school children, and group contests resulted in revealing more knowledge about local biodiversity as compared to individual participation, thus reflecting synergism. During recipe contests, Adi women showed a sound knowledge of local biodiversity, presenting as traditional foods with more than 50 indigenous forest based plants, many of which are locally uncommon. Significantly, the Gaon Burha (village headman) helped in diffusion of knowledge on plants and expanding learning networks created by children and women. It is concluded that creating a platform on which contests based ecological knowledge of community is collaborated with formal knowledge systems, can ultimately contribute in conserving biodiversity more sustainably.

Eleven wild plant species documented with fruits mainly used for food and other uses were based on the acquired knowledge passed from elders that has provided local people with wide selection of plants in their diets. Based on the information obtained, 11 wild fruit species were investigated for their sugar concentrations. Taste preference (e.g., mainly sweet, sour, bitter), flavour and ripeness were observed to be important for mode of consumption and uses. HPLC method was used to quantify the major sugars in the fruits. The retention times of sucrose, glucose, and fructose measured were 10.3, 12.7, and 15.1 min, respectively. Artocarpus odaratissimus has significantly high amounts of glucose (39.9 gm kg-1 DW) and fructose (48.5 gm kg-1 DW) whereas Dialium indum and Salacca magnifica had higher sucrose contents in comparison with other wild fruits. Etlingera elatior was found to have the lowest sugar content. Multivariate analysis (PCA) showed 3 groups of fruits species can be separated based on their sugar contents. With respect to glucose/fructose ratio, Artocarpus odoratisimus and Dialium indum have high amounts of fructose, which may induce fructose malabsorption if taken in excessive amount. Information on the wild plant species and their fruit sugar content is essential to determine their potential for further market utilization and human consumption.

Effect of EMS and SA and gamma rays on seeds of two pigeonpea varieties Amol (BDN-708) and Vaishali (BSMR- 853) was studied. The different parameters studied in M1 generation were seed germination percentage, seedling height, chlorophyll deficient sectors, leaf morphological changes, pollen sterility and survival of plants at maturity. The different types of chlorophyll chimeras observed were yellow, light green, yellowish green and dull green. All these chimeras were found to be affecting the leaflets totally, partially and at the margins. The maximum pollen sterility (10.87%) was observed at 0.020% SA in variety BSMR 853. The survival of plants at maturity showed a gradual decrease with increasing concentration/dose of mutagenic treatments.

Nitrite nitrogen content decreased with increasing concentration of salt salinity, while it was accumulated under water stress conditions. The accumulation of insoluble protein nitrogen was more in the leaves under water stress conditions, but, decreased in the stem. The free amino acids and amide contents were affected due to salinity stress than the water stress. The activity of nitrate reductase was inhibited by salinity treatments in leaves, roots and nodules. On the contrary, its activity increased underwater stress conditions. Nitrite reductase in leaves was inhibited, while got stimulated in the roots and nodules due to salinity stress. However, reverse pattern was observed underwater stress conditions.

The study revealed uses of 90 plant species (87 Angiosperms and 3 Gymnosperms) belonging to 45 families and 80 genera. These plants were found to be used for treating diabetes, arthritis, cardiac complaints, asthma, leucorrhoea, infertility, mental disorder, flatulence, abdominal complaints and chronic fever, etc.

Present investigation was carried out to study the effect of Plant Growth Retardants on flower quality and yield of African marigold. Three plant growth retardants i.e. maleic hydrazide, cycocel and SADH (Alar) with three varying concentrations have been used and were evaluated against the two control treatments (control without pinching and control with pinching). All three plant growth retardants were significantly superior over the two control treatments in all aspects of flower yield and quality. SADH 2000 ppm treatment recorded significant delayed initiation of first flower bud (47.13 days), duration for opening of flower from flower bud emergence (24.00 days), duration of 50% flowering (81.57 days), increase in number of flowers per plant (36.57), yield of flowers per plant (232.21 g), per hectare (12.90 t) and highest vase life of flowers (7.0 days). SADH 1500 ppm recorded significantly maximum flower diameter (5.43 cm) and weight of 20 flowers (138 g), while SADH 1000 ppm gave significantly highest seed yield per flower (255 seeds). Cycocel 750 ppm recorded the significantly maximum flower stalk length (15.50 cm). Significantly highest 1000 seed weight was recorded in maleic hydrazide 500 ppm treatment.

Minimum days of interval between two flowers were recorded in Sunglow (45.75 days). Maximum number of days taken for stigma receptivity was recorded in Meringue White (53.25). Maximum number of days stigma remain receptive was recorded in IIHR selection Al and Simba (5.25 days each).

Sufoof-e-mohazzil, a unani polyherbal formulation is used by Unani physicians for treatment of obesity. The present work involves standardization of Sufoof-e-mohazzil in order to assess the quality of In-house and marketed formulations. In-house and marketed formulations were subjected to pharmacognostic studies, physico-chemical properties, phytochemical analysis and HPTLC fingerprint profile to set the standards, which can be used as reference standard to evaluate the quality control in herbal industries and to overcome batch to batch variations in traditional preparation. In the present study, the anatomical markers fibro vascular tissue, endospermic cells, vittae, pitted vessels and group of sclereids from the mesocarp were observed. The extractive values were found to be more for alcohol than water. The preliminary phytochemical analysis indicated presence of alkaloids, fats and fixed oils, essential oils, glycosides, resins and saponins. HPTLC fingerprint profile of formulations showed a characteristic pinkish red band of Thymol at Rf of 0.43.

Hepatoprotective activity of Eurycoma longifolia Jack, roots methanol-water fraction on therapeutic dose was evaluated in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced rats. Hepatic cells were still normal after three months administration of methanol-water fraction at therapeutic dose. The administration of methanol-water fraction on therapeutic dose prior to CCl4-induced or CCl4-induced prior to methanol-water fraction resulted in suppression of ALT and AST. Histopathological and ultrastructure studies confirmed that methanol-water fraction protected hepatic cells. It is concluded that the methanol-water fraction of pasak bumi roots has a hepatoprotective activity.

But the herbal formulations which are being prepared using traditional methods may not have the desired quality and batch to batch consistency due to lack of modern pharmacopoeial standards. Four samples of Katphaladi Curna, procured from different Ayurvedic pharmacies, were subjected to physicochemical analysis, HPTLC fingerprinting and botanical characterization, and compared using authentic ingredients as reference. The studies suggest that these parameters may, together, be used for quality evaluation and standardization of compound formulations and maintaining their quality, purity and efficacy.

This study seeks to identify the types of pollen grains occurring in ten honey samples produced from different parts of Ekiti State in Southwestern Nigeria. According to Qualitative analysis, pollen grains of plants from 32 families were identified. They included Ceasalpiniaceae, Araceae, Poaceae, Malvaceae, Rubiaceae, Papilionaceae, Sapindaceae and Euphobiaceae. Dominant pollen types were Adenia cissampeloides, Euphorbia hirta, Elaies guineensis. Eighty-five pollen types were identified from the honey samples examined. Pollen grains of Adenia cordiflora, Elaies guineensis and Zea mays were found in nearly all the samples. Other important taxa used as sources of nectar by honey bees were identified and listed. The pollen spectra of the samples were indicator of various plant species visited by honey bees in the area which reflect the ecological vegetation type in Ekiti State, Nigeria .

Averages of 82.13±0.2%, 79.73±0.3% and 78.73±0.3% were the percentage moisture contents of the stem in top, middle and base regions respectively, whereas, averages of 76.00±0.2%, 78.40±0.1% and 81.80±0.4% were the moisture contents at the base of the stem in the core, middle and outer regions respectively. Moreso, averages of 77.40±0.3%, 79.00±0.2% and 82.80±0.1% were the moisture contents at the middle of the stern in the core, middle and outer regions respectively. Similarly, at the top of the stem, averages of 80.80±0.2%, 81.60±0.3% and 84.00±0.1% were the moisture contents in the core, middle and outer regions. The moisture contents therefore, increased from the base up the stem as well as from the core to the outer regions both at the base, middle and top. Interestingly, the methods of extraction of oils described in Ayurvedic literatures are similar to these methods, as well as the medicinal uses except using fish oil in skin diseases. Value addition in the extracted oil resulted in additional economic benefit. Plants used for oil extraction are being conserved in forests as well as cultivated in farm.

Purpose of this study is to analyze and record traditional knowledge of wild edible plants utilized by the indigenous people living on Jeju Island in Korea. This study reveals that 124 informants have produced 471 viable usages from the collection of 164 species, within 127 genera in 57 families. Regarding the distribution of recorded families, 12 species of Poaceae occupied 16.7% of the total use-reports. Overall, 31 kinds of plant-parts were selected as edible materials requiring 68 various preparatory methods. Fidelity levels of plants regarding preparatory methods, 55 plant species recorded a FL of 100%. The categories of preparatory methods with the highest degree of consensus from informants were all types of fermented soybean, chopped noodles, and raw (Type I). The field investigative method used semi-structured questionnaires and adopted the participatory rural appraisal method for this study and produced exceptional results in investigating and analyzing traditional wild edible plants.

Emergence of resistance among mosquitoes is a recent problem. Safe and ecofriendly agents from biological origin is need of the hour. An attempt is made in the present study to analyse the larvicidal effects of the plant leaves extract against anopheles mosquito. Among these selected plants, Catharanthus roseus, Phyllanthus amarus, Acalypha indica, zingiber officinale, cynodon dactylon and Aerva lanata showed the highest level of activity against mosquito larvae. In conclusion, the results obtained that the leaves extract used had some bioactive constituents which resulted in the larvicidal effects. Such findings are useful in promoting research aimed at the development of new agents for mosquitoe control, based on bioactive natural chemical components from indigenous plant sources. The use of indigenous plant based products by individual and community can provide a prophylactic measure for protecting against various mosquito borne diseases.

Curcuma neilgherrensis Wight is an unexplored drug in the current scientific world. Leaves of the plant are claimed to be effective in the management of diabetes mellitus. Pharmacodynamics and pharmacology of medicinal herbs used in Ayurveda can be identified in terms of Rasa (taste), Guna (inherent property), Veerya (Potency), Vipaka (post digestion property) and Prabhava (target oriented unique effect). To assess the status of Rasa, Guna, Veerya and Vipaka of Curcuma neilgherrensis Wight, based on its pharmacological actions, the powdered drug was orally administrated in a dose of 5 gm twice a day with lukewarm water for duration of one week. Rasa was assessed also by the immediate taste perception. The study revealed the tikta and kashaya rasa of drug, where as lagu, ruksha, vishada and ushna were the chief properties inherent to this drug. Curcuma neilgherrensis wight comes under the category of ushna veerya drugs and the Vipaka arises after the digestion of this particular dravya is katu. The application of Curcuma neilgherrensis wight for the management of diabetes mellitus can be justified; based on these findings.

Medicobotanical survey was undertaken to collect information from traditional healers on the use of medicinal plants in Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh. The indigenous knowledge of local traditional healers and native plants used for medicinal purpose were collected through questionnaire and personal interviews. The genus Phyllanthus represented by 18 species in Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh, of which 13 species are used by the aboriginal Adivasi communities in the treatment of various human diseases/ailments. The tribal people especially the elders have authentic information on medicinal values of different plant parts like leaves, fruits, flowers, seeds, stem bark, stem galls and roots. They use the drugs of different plant parts in the form of paste, powder, juice, decoction, infusion, and also in crude form, with other additives like calcium, camphor, castor oil, cow milk, dry chilli, garlic, gingelly oil, ginger, goat milk, honey, ilachi, jaggery, mustard oil, pepper, turmeric, white of hen's egg, cow urine, etc. The hither to unknown therapeutic properties of test species were analysed and indicated with asterisk. Pinus brutia Ten.. Pinus halepensis Mill., Pinus nigra Arnold, Pinus pinea L. and Pinus sylvestris L. forests cover approximately 10.91 million hectares area in Turkey. Since there are a lot of settlements inside or near these wide Pinus forest lands, the usages of Pinus species are very common among local people. Within this paper, 130 ethnobotanical and traditional medicinal studies published up to 2011 which were dealed different areas of Turkey are examined and the usages of Pinus species are compiled from 54 of them. It has 269 records that are to be proof of the wide range of ethnobotanical usages of pines. Due P. halepensis has a narrow distribution, the records about ethnobotanical usage of it does not exist in the investigated literature. Particularly medicinal use of pines is the most prominent way of their utilization. It is stated in the literature that the uppermost medicinal usage of Pinus species is for respiratory system diseases. They are also used as food, veterinary medicine, dye, firewood, handycrafts, etc. P. brutia and P. nigra have the widest distribution area in Turkey and ethnobotanical usages of them are found more than other species according to indexes obtained with Shannon-Wiener index system.

During the laboratory germination testing of one year old seeds of Holarrihena antidysenterica (Linn) Wall at times failed to germinate. This failure in germination is probably related to the state of seed dormancy. The exogenous application of hormones such as gibberellic acid (GA3) has been reported to break the seed dormancy (Khan 1980). However, precise information regarding breaking of dormancy in Holarrihena antidysenterica (Linn) wall is not available. An attempt has been made to find out a suitable method of breaking the dormancy.

A comprehensive survey of the pteridophyte flora have been collected from Southern Western Ghat particularly from Ratnagiri, Sawanwadi, Malvan, Castlerock, Anmode, Molem and its environs. The habitat was examined with reference to terrestrial and other ecological parameters, such as habitat, ecology and fruiting season. The data reveal a total of 12 species of pteridophytes.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies provide a revolutionary tool with numerous applications in transcriptome studies. The power of NGS technologies to address diverse biological questions has already been proved in many studies. One of the most important applications of NGS is the sequencing and characterization of transcriptome of a non-model species using RNA-seq. This application of NGS technologies can be used to dissect the complete expressed gene content of an organism. In this article, I illustrate the use of NGS technologies in transcriptome characterization of a non-model species taking example of chickpea from our recent studies.
