Greater wax moth (Galleria mellonella L) preferred darker places. The results showed lighting conditions have significant effect on the egg laying behaviour of greater wax moth and determines the various parameters viz. oviposition period and total number of eggs aid. Constant exposure to light showed considerable reduction in egg laying capacity of greater wax moth. In darker conditions 96.68%eggs were laid by the wax moth. In case of normal and continuous light exposure 52.93%and 32.26% eggs laid respectively. Under above-mentioned lighting conditions, a significant variation in ovipositional period was observed viz. 7.3 days, 6,6 days and 3.8 days. The substratum also showed an influence on egg laying behaviour of wax moth. The detailed study of the egg laying behaviour of greater wax moth suggested that the pest (wax moth) was nocturnal in habit. The relationship between the host and pest shows the ecological balance and their harmonious co-existence.

The results indicated that the females of P. (P.) concinnus, the males and females of M. latimanus and O. platytarsis exhibited, allometric growth while the males of P. (P.) concinnus exhibited isometric growth pattern.

Rodenticide baiting and trapping are the common methods for the control of rodents. During the present studies, efficacy of multi catch wonder traps baited with mixture of broken wheat grains, sugar powder and groundnut oil( WSO, 96:2:2) and with 0.5% female urine of bandicoot rat was determined in maize and bajra fields. Use of baits with 0.5% urine of female B. bengalensis improved the efficacy of trapping in fodder fields. Out of total trapped rats, 68.75% were caught in traps with 0.5% urine bait and 31.25% in traps baited without urine. Capturing of greater number of rats in traps with 0.5% urine bait during the present field experiment established the practical importance of urine for improving the trappability of rats in field situations where rats are widely dispersed.

Study was carried out to assess suitable method with the urine application for improving the acceptance of bait by the bandicoot rats. T-maze was fabricated by using laboratory cages for this experiment, which consisted of three arms I, II and III and the central cage. In the control experiment mixture of cracked wheat, powdered milk, powdered sugar and groundnut oil (WMSG, 85:5:5:5) was placed on a piece of paper in I and II arms whereas III arm had WMSG in a bait station fabricated from condemned scooter tyre pieces. Three experiments were carried out in which plain I lit was kept in all the three, II rat urine was applied to the paper on which plain bait was kept and in the III experiment 0.5% urine was mixed with bait and kept on plain paper. The last one experiment attracted maximum number of rats. The experiments were statistically verified and third experiment proved to be accepted significantly.

Gut content analysis of Barilius vagra (Ham.) in all the four age group viz. 0+, 1+. 2+, 3+ size range (2.1-13 cm TL) revealed that the fish is mainly an euryphagic and column feeder. Its food mainly composed of Algae, Insects, Crustaceans, Diatoms, Rotifers, Deteritius and Miscellaneous items. The younger stages i.e. from 0+ to 1+ age group were found to be carni-omnivorous, as the under yearlings feed mainly on 47.15% of animal matter and, 32.07% of plant matter, whereas in 1+ age group the animal and plant matter composition was 32.79% and 23.03% respectively. On the other hand, fishes of 2+ and 3+ age groups mainly feed on 11.29% and 14.52% of animal matter and 40.4% and 42.02% of plant matter respectively. On this basis, the adult stages can be safely categorized as herbi-omnivorous. Relative Gut length increase from 0.7280 in 0+ age group to 1.145 in 3+ age group and shows significant linear co-relation with length of the fish. The value of "r" was found to be 0.997, 0.983, 0.984, and 0.993 in 0+, 1+, 2+ and 3+ age group respectively. Gastrosomatic index shows gradual decline, it was maximum i.e. 4.39 in 0+ and minimum i.e. 1.95 in 3+ age group. In adults, the feeding intensity was maximum in pre-spawning period, moderate in post-spawning period and minimum during spawning phase.

Bacopa monniera is a medicinal plant used in Ayurveda for improving memory and learning. It is also used as anxiolytic, cognition enhancer, antidepressant, anticancer, immuno-modulatory, and anti-inflammatory agent. It has been proven to posess antioxidant property. In the present investigation effect of ethanolic extract of B. monniera was studied on lipofuscinogenesis and fluorescence product in the brain of female albino mice. For this study ageing was accelerated by the treatment of 0.5 ml 5% D-galactose for 15 days. This resulted in increased accumulation of lipofuscin granules and increased fluorescence product. After co-treatment with ethanolic extract of B. monniera (40 mg/kg body wt.) there was decrease in accumulation of lipofuscin granules and significantly decreased fluorescence product in cerebral cortex, hippocampus, corpora quadrigemina, cerebellum as compared to ageing accelerated group.

Baramati is one of the well-known regions of Pune District (Maharashtra), where most of the land is under sugarcane cultivation. In this region, irrigation is available on about 60,656.00 hectares. Due to heavy irrigation the soil becomes more saline in nature. Study the experiments were conducted on an earthworm Polypheretima elongata to find the lethal dose of sodium chloride. Well-acclimatized healthy earthworms were selected for toxicity test in soil for a period of 24 to 96 hours. Observed and calculated values were recorded. LD50 values for sodium chloride were found to be 10.5, 7.1, 5.5, and 3.1 gm/kg of soil for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h respectively.

Consumption of green vegetables and fruits slow down the process of ageing as they contain natural antioxidants. Lactuca sativa is a rich source of flavonol antioxidants like quercetin and caffeic acid. In addition, it also carries ascorbic acid, which is a well-known antioxidant. Lettuce is routinely used in many parts of the world as green salad. Anti-ageing effect of ethanolic extract of Lactuca sativa was studied in D-galactose induced ageing accelerated female albino mice. For this purpose the animals were divided into three groups viz., control group - injected (s.c.) with 0.5 ml sterile water for fifteen days, ageing accelerated group - injected (s. c.) with 0.5 ml of 5% D-galactose for fifteen days and D-galactose + Lactuca sativa cotreated group - given 0.5 ml of 5% D-galactose containing ethanolic extract of Lactuca sativa (40 mg/kg body wt.) for fifteen days. Measurement of malondialdehyde (MDA), antioxidant enzymes SOD, CAT and GPx were carried out in various regions of brain viz., cerebral cortex, hippocampus, corpora quadrigemina and cerebellum. Aim of present study is to investigate the effect of salivariadenectomy on the postnatal development of testicular lactate dehydrogenase-X. In general the salivariadenectomy means either the removal of sublingual or submandibular glands or removal of both the glands. These glands were removed in male mice at their age of 20 days. The controls were sham operated. The operated male mice were sacrificed at the age of 45 days, 60 days and 90 days. The testes of these animals were studied biochemically and by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) for lactate dehydrogenase activity. The epididymis was used to study the sperm count. In control mice, the lactate dehydrogenase were electrophoretically separated into six bands i.e., I, II, HI, IV, V and LDH-X, but the testis specific LDH-X band was completely disappeared in salivariadenectomised mice. The total LDH activity and the sperm count were decreased significantly in the operated mice sacrificed at different age intervals.

Deals with the histo-morphologjcal study of optic tissue in the larvae of Himalayan snow trout Schizothorax plagiostomus (Heckel). It is observed that the development of eyes is closely related to the development of brain, which starts to develop after 74 hrs of fertilization. At hatching the larvae have unpigmented optic tissue and after that the formation and development of different cells layer, enlargement and thickness of cells takes place. Retractor muscles were not functional until 15th day post hatching. During post flexion stage the retina of Schizothorax plagiostomus larvae had only single cones layer, while twin cone and rods cells begin to develop with the ending of post flexion stage (25-30th day post hatching). On 30th day post hatching the optic tissue (eyes) consists of well developed cornea and eight layered retina (outer is pigmented epithelial layer followed by rods and cones, next is outer nuclear layer, outer plexiform layer, inner nuclear layer, inner plexiform layer, ganglion cell layer, and nerve fiber layer), surrounding the three layered (outer encapsulating sheath, followed by physiologically active cells and fibrous layer) spherical ball like lens.

Composition distribution and abundance of benthic macrofauna in the Andoni flats were studied from January 1999 to December 2000. A total of 30 species of benthic macrofauna were recorded which cut across the Phyla Coelenterata, Annelida, Mollusca, Arthropoda and Chordata. Coelenterata was represented by one species of anemone; Annelida had four genera of polychaetes, Arthropoda was represented by five species of crabs, and two species of shrimps. Phylum Mollusca was represented by four bivalve species and seven gastropods; while Chordata was represented by seven species of fin-fish. The bivalves were more abundant in the intertidal sandy substrate with characteristic low organic carbon content and longer hours of exposure to sunlight than in intertidal muddy substrate shaded by mangrove vegetation and in the subtidal areas.

In vitro effect of Allium sativum on lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) of Haemonchus contortus was studied. A. sativum significantly inhibited the LDH activity catalysing both oxidation of lactate and reduction of pyruvate. At 1% concentration after 8h exposure, the inhibition of LDH catalysing the oxidation of lactate was 74.57% and the inhibition of LDH catalysing the reduction of pyruvate was 38.41%. This results in the debilitation of pyruvate and the accumulation of lactate. Consequently, the generation of ATP is affected and the energy-deprived worms unable to sustain themselves in situ get eliminated from the host.

Metabolic syndrome-X induced stress is prevalent world over and is being managed through pharmacological treatment. There are some dietary components such as Zn, Cu, Mg, Mn, vitamin-E, C and omega-3 fatty acids which have been shown, to reduce the severity of stress associated with metabolic syndrome-X. But in the Indian staple diet, there is a big gap between requirement of these dietary components and their availability in food particularly in the patients of metabolic syndrome-X. Keeping this in mind, modified eggs were designed (Patent Application No.2264 Del-2005) and their efficacy on metabolic syndrome-X was studied in female wistar rats. The results of this study revealed that feeding on these eggs mixed diets to metabolic syndrome-X induced rats, a considerable reduction in stress hormone cortisol, total lipids, IDL-c and VLDL-c in the blood, improvement in the sensitivity of insulin leading to reduction in blood glucose and rise in HDL-c and improvement in the mineral status in blood serum and tissues were observed. This data suggests that these modified eggs are effective in reducing the metabolic syndrome-X induced stress.

Effect on life process of S. oryzae was observed in grains treated with various grain protectants. All grain protectants were found to be significantly superior in affecting the life process of the pest over untreated check, the oil of A. indica (18.00 eggs) was found to be most effective in reducing the number of egg laid by weevil which was followed by A. indica powder, M. azedarach and M. dioica being 21.00, 24.67 and 31.00 eggs, respectively. The incubation period was non significant in different grain protectants which varied from 6.48 to 8.95 days. However, it was 6.48 days in M. azedarach signify the minimum larval period was in the treatment C. nucifera (19.30 days), significantly highest larval period (26.50 days) was recorded on grains treated with A. indica powder. There was no significant variation in pupal period of the pest and it ranged from 12.54 to 13.94 days in different treatments. The F1 population of the pest ranged from 3.33 to 31.00 adults in different grain protectants, while it was 76.33 adults in untreated check. The less number of weevils were found in grains treated with A. indica oil. The wheat grains treated with different grains protectants the grain damage by S. oryzae was maximum in grains treated with C. nucifera (39.39 percent) and minimum (4.65 percent) in A. indica oil. The loss in weight of the wheat grains in different grain protectants was significantly less, which ranged from 1.95 to 23.02 percent in comparison of untreated check (48.63 percent).

Present investigation was carried out to analyse the response of varying concentrations of paclobutrazol in plant tissues. Evidences were produced by examining the interaction of gibberellic acid (GA3) and paclobutrazol (PBZ) in lettuce hypocotyl bioassay and 6-benzyl aminopurine (BAP) and paclobutrazol in radish cotyledon enlargement test that paclobutrazol counteracts gibberellin activity when applied exogenously. It also favoured radish cotyledon enlargement at low concentration without counteracting BAP action. Paclobutrazol slightly increased radish cotyledon growth at low concentration (up to 0.01 ppm) and could not counteract the growth caused by 1.0 ppm BAP at its 0.001 to 1.0 ppm concentrations suggesting independent effect of paclobutrazol to that of BAP. Furthermore, the activity of paclobutrazol was tested in corn root curvature test and it was found that PBZ concentrations from 0.001 to 10,0 ppm linearly increased the percentage of corn roots showing more than 90° curvature.

Long slender hair like processes present on right and left margins in the distal region of hypopharynx may be sensilla cheatica. Very small peg like pointed structures on the margins in proximal part of hypopharynx may be sensilla basiconica. The surface of hypopharynx is covered with very small, medium and long processes. Some long and medium processes are fused together at their tips. These may be sensilla trichodea of variable length - responding to different phagostimulants.

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of zooplankton collected for 12 months from 5 stations showed that the fauna were diverse in time and space. The planktonic groups included coelenterates, rotifers, nematods, oligochaets, polychaets, copepods, ostracods, cladocerans, amphipods, insects and fish larvae. Rotifers and copepods formed the major components in all the samples. Absence of some of the major groups in the retting zone was very conspicuous.

Post vasectomized azoospermic semen sample were analyzed for short. tandem repeat (STR) on the Y- Chromosome by using 310 Genetic Analyzer. It has been observed a wide variation was attributed to the number of epithelial or white blood cells that are present in these azoospermic sample. DNA Profile of the vasectomized males was obtained for all six Y- STR Loci and by amplification kit. The method developed in the study demonstrate that Y- STR is a sensitive method for the identification of the presence of male epithelial cell in the post coital vagina.

Similarly WBC decreased, while RBC increased due to penitrem A. Significant changes in proteins, glycogen, and cholesterol of liver, brain, heart and kidney were also recorded. Histopathological changes of much significance were also recorded in tissues of heart, liver and brain.

Study was conducted to evaluate ascorbate defense system and oxidative stress in male albino rats under acute ethanol treatment. The levels of ascorbate (Liver & Adrenals) and cholesterol (Liver, Adrenals and Testes) were decreased significantly in ethanol treated animals as compared to control and distilled water treated animals. When ascorbate was supplemented with ethanol, the cholesterol and ascorbate levels decreased to a lesser extent as compared to only ethanol treated animals, but the decrease was significant as compared to both controls. Results show increased oxidative stress and compromised antioxidant ascorbate defense system in ethanol treated albino rats.

Microorganisms play an important and often essential role in the digestion and growth of many arthropods. Little is known about symbiotic bacteria associated with Crustaecae. We inventoried the gut bacteria of an omnivore, the giant tiger prawn (Peaneous monodon). This shrimp consumes algal polysaccharides as their part of diet. Cellulose and starch are the major composition of marine green algae. As they consume polysaccharide in their diet, their digestive tract must contain cellulose and starch degrading enzymes. This is supported by bacteria in the digestion of cellulose and starch. The bacteria isolated were characterized biochemically and found to be Citrobacter, Proteus, Serratia, Bacillus and Pseudomonas. These bacteria help in the digestion of cellulose and starch in the diet of prawn P. monodon. Hence, the study shows that the midgut has higher activity than foregut and hindgut in cellulose and starch degradation.

Prevalence of freshwater snails in Greater Guwahati (26°05' to 26°15'N latitudes and longitudes 91°35' to 91°50'E) was studied for a period of one year (September 1999 to August 2000). Out of a total 17 species recorded, the prevalence of Brotia (antimalania) costula, Lymnaea (Pseudosuccinia) acuminata f. chlamys, Lymnaea (Galba) andersoniana, Segmentina trochoidea, Physa acuta and Lamellidens corrianus are found to be new record from the region. Species wise highest and lowest prevalence was found in Indoplanorbis exustus (10.68%) and Lamel'idens corrianus (0.97%) species, respectively. Physa acuta has been recorded from the region which was otherwise considered to be available only in fossil forms in India.

Male albino rats were studied from birth to postnatal day 98. Prolonged intermittent stress was inflicted. Consequent upon stress, body weight and weight of the seminal vesicles declined. Using morphometric methods, volume of the components of the seminal vesicle were estimated. Details of the results showed that between day 42 and day 98 in normal control rats, body weight and weight of seminal vesicle increase. The height of the epithelium increase approximately three fold, nuclear diameter increase to nearly double. Absolute volume of the epithelium multiplied enormously followed by the volume of the stroma. The luminal space widen with age of the normal rats. All parameters were depressed due to prolonged stress. On withdrawal of the prolonged stress, the size of the seminal vesicles and the prolific histo-architecture tend to build up.

Medial cortex of lizards is a Simple three layered brain region displaying cyto- and chemoarchitectonical, connectional and ontogenetics that relate it to the hippocampal fascia dentata of mammals. Its neurons in the cell layer-II show a morphologically diverse population, partly as a result of the prominent continuous growth of this telencephalic region. Authors describe here the morphology of the neurons present in the medial cortex of the common Indian wall lizard (Hemidactylus flaviviridis) by using the classical Golgi-Colonnier procedure. According to classification criteria of dendritic tree pattern and dendritic spine covering we have observed seven different types of neurons in the cell layer-II of the medial cortex. Three of them, "bipolar", "aspinous monotufted monopolar", "aspinous monotufted bipolar", were without spines; whereas the four others having spines were classified as "spinous monotufted monopolar", "spinous monotufted bipolar", "spinous bitufted bipolar", "spinous multipolar". These neurons in the middle layer send their projection dendrites and axon towards the outer plexiform layer and inner plexiform layer. These neuronal types were compared with those reported previously by different workers in the other reptilian medial cortex and in the mammalian dentate area.

The families have been arranged phylogenetically and the species under a genus follow an alphabetic sequence. For each species, correct Zoological name with author citation, have been cited. The fauna is a mixture of endemic hill stream, Burmese, Indochinese and widely distributed forms. Status, distribution and production potentials of the fish fauna are discussed.

After 24 hrs of exposure, the Hexane extract of the leaves of Azardirachta indica at 62.5, 125, 250, 500 and 1000 ppm produced percentage mortality of 24.0 ± 4.4, 36.0 ± 4.2, 55.0 ± 3.6, 64.0 ±, 4.2, 72.5 ± 4.3 and Chloroform extract produced percentage mortality of 12.2 ± 1.7, 48.5 ± 4.3, 56.5 ± 4.0, 73.0 ± 1.7, 87.0 ±1.7 respectively. In Datura metel the percentage mortality was 9.0 ± 1.7, 17.5 ± 2.5, 30.0 ± 2.8, 42.0 ± 2.0, 57.0 ±1.7 in Hexane extracts and 13.7 ± 2.1, 27.0 ± 1.7, 32.0 ± 2.0, 47.0 ± 1.7 and 62.0 ± 4.2 in Chloroform extract. Increase in the concentration of extracts produced higher mortality. The chloroform extract of the leaves of Azardirachta indica and Datura metel were highly effective against the larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus.

Efficacy of varying concentrations of potassium permanganate, copper sulphate, potassium dichromate, acriflavin, picric acid, ammonium chloride, sodium chloride, potassium iodide and formaldehyde against the nauplius and copepodid stages of Lernaea cyprinacea were studied. Formaldehyde, picric acid and ammonium chloride are capable of killing the free living developmental stages of Lernaea at the lowest concentrations studied. Formalin and picric acid at 0.025% concentration were able to kill the nauplius stages within 21.00 and 16.00 min and copepodid I stages within 3.25 and 1.50 min of exposure, respectively. Ammonium chloride at 0.05% concentration was effective in killing the copepodid I stages within 9 min of exposure. However, it was observed that copper sulphate, acriflavin, potassium iodide, potassium permanganate and potassium dichromate were effective against the developmental stages at a much higher concentration reported to be toxic to the fish host. The possibility of using ammonium chloride which is commonly used as a fertilizer as a potential chemical in killing the free living stages of Lernaea cyprinacea, thereby disrupting the developmental cycle of the parasite is discussed.

Since synthetic carotenoids are known to have deteriorating effects on the environment, there is a great demand for inclusion of natural carotenoids in aqua feed to achieve bright coloration in fish. The possible use of naturally available carotenoid rich ingredients such as microalgal pigments (Chlorella vulgaris Beijer, Haematococcus pluvialis, Dunaliella salina(Dun.) It also increased the blood glucose and slightly depleted the liver glycogen of the pigeons. The probable mechanism behind these results was briefly discussed.

Crude seed extract of Ricinus communis in acetone and petrolium ether exhibited toxic effects on the larvae and pupae of Trogoderma granarium. Each extract was tested at four concentrations 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%, along with a control in respective solvent. The acetone extract was found to be more toxic than the petrolium ether extract at highest dose concentration. Percent larval corrected mortality was 76.67% in acetone and 61.40% in petrolium ether. The pupae also showed significant retardation in the development as compared to control. Percent pupal corrected mortality was 72.54% in acetone and 66.67% in petrolium ether extract at 100% dose concentration.
