Dodonaea angustifolia leaf extract had significantly affected the cellular constituents of adults/larvae under in vitro conditions. Variation in the total sugar and reducing sugar, total soluble protein and total phenol was observed in the adults treated with different crude extracts. Acid and alkaline phosphatases were high in all the adults (irrespective of treatments) compared to normal control. Only hexane, acetone and water extracts treated larvae survived. The larvae emerged from these treatments also showed vast and minor variation in sugar and protein contents respectively, however, no variation was observed in phenolic content. Acid phosphatase was high in acetone, hexane and water extract treated larvae, whereas alkaline phosphatase was more in hexane extract treated larvae. The number of protein bands was high in acetone and hexane extract treated larvae and less in chloroform, water extract treated and untreated larvae.

Tracing many reasons, pesticidal cause is gaining momentum for the decline of amphibian population. As there are no reports on the effects of pesticides on amphibian fauna of Western Ghats, Lcarbaryl a carbamate pesticide was used to test their genotoxic effect on L. limnocharis. The pilot toxicity studies have revealed that the LD50 was estimated to be 125mg/kg b. wt at 96 h by an intraperitoneal injection. The median lethal and sub lethal doses 125, 93.75, 62.50 and 31.25 rng/ kg body weight equivalent to LD50 and 3/4lh, 1/2nd;. 1/4lh of the LD50 were employed to treat the animals for further studies. Protocols such as chromosomal aberrations micronucleus test and Sperm morphology assay were used to evaluate the genotoxicity. The frequency of chromosomal aberrations are not significant even at higher doses, micronucleus and sperm abnormalities were significantly more in higher doses of pesticide exposure during 72 and 96 h treated groups compared to controls.

The quantitative analysis for protein, carbohydrates and lipids were analysed in a fresh water crab, Oziotelphusa senex senex. Three groups of crabs were injected with aqueous extract of brain, thoracic ganglion and eyestalk of the matured female crab, Emerita asiatica. The mobilization of organic contents from hepatopancreas to ovary and spermatheca were highly significant in thoracic ganglion treated crab followed by brain, the eyestalk extract treated group showed significant decrease in the organic contents.

The effect of an antiestrogen, Tamoxifen Citrate on the differential follicular counts in the domestic pigeon Columba livia is investigated. 250μg/tamoxifen citrate/0.2 ml olive oil/day (7 injections) were administered to female pigeons during preincubation phase. The weight of the ovary, oviduct and length of the oviduct were noted at autopsy. The number of follicles at different developmental stages was counted and classified depending on their diameter. There was a significant decrease in the length of the oviduct and weight of the ovary and oviduct in tamoxifen citrate treated pigeons. There was a significant increase in the total number of normal and atretic follicles and only Stage I to Stage III follicles were found in the tamoxifen citrate treated pigeons. This study suggests that, estrogen is needed for the maintenance of dominant yolky follicles. The growth of previtellogenic follicles, stage I does not seem to be dependent upon estrogen. A significant increase in the number of Stage I previtellogenic follicles in tamoxifen citrate treated pigeons suggests that the recruitment of these follicles might be under inhibitory/regulatory influence of dominant yolky follicles in the ovary.

Total carbohydrate, protein contents and succinate dehydrogenase en zyme activity in kidney muscle and brain were found to be decreased within one to two hours but recovery required ten to twelve hours after injection of venom.

SublethaI toxicity of ammonium sulphate on the certain haematological parameters of the air-breathing fish Channa striata was examined for 25 days. Fifteen groups often fish each were exposed to 0.2 g/l (10% of LC50 value) of ammonium sulphate solution, prepared in tap water. Fish were sacrificed after different stages of exposure. Percentage haemoglobin (Hb), haematocrit, total number of erythrocytes (RBCs) and leucocytes (TLCs) were estimated. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin content (MCHC) were calculated. Hb, RBCs, Ht and TLCs have been decreased indicating very poor physiological status of the ammonium sulphate exposed fish causing anemia. MCH, MCV and MCHC have also been altered indicating alterations in the size of RBCs and their Hb content.

The present study reports the effect of oral administration of methanol, acetone and hexane extract of polyherbal formulation named "Madhumega Suranam" are being used extensively in Indian system of medicine. A significant increase in the blood glucose level and liver cholesterol was observed in diabetic rats. Decreased level of protein, liver glycogen and muscle glycogen of diabetic rats were also noted. Methanol, acetone and hexane polyherbal extract administered at a dose of 20mg/kg body weight to diabetic rats orally for 21 days normalized the biochemical changes. The effect of polyherbal extract was more potent than glibenclamide (600mg/kg body weight). Insulin (6Units/Kg) restored all the parameters to normal status. Thus all the three extracts tested produced significant results but hexane polyherbal extract is the most promising one.

Assessment of population structure on the basis of density, distribution and diversity dominance pattern was carried out in Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, Uttarakhand, India. Besides, distribution pattern, population structure and conservation status of ten rare and endangered medicinal plants were also evaluated. N Different habitat types for these species were identified and sampled using vertical belt transects. Out of ten habitats identified, distribution of most of the species was found to be restricted in 2-3 habitats. However, Picrorhiza kurrooa showed wide distribution in six habitats, while Swertia chirayita was restricted to a - single habitat. On the basis of density, occurrence in different habitats and level of pressure authours have grouped them into two broad categories: (i) restricted distribution and high pressure, and (ii) well distributed and low pressure. Accordingly, implication of conservation and management strategies has been suggested.

Channa punctatus was exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of. an organochlorine pesticide, endosulfan for 120 hours. Bioaccumulation and its effects on various biochemical parameters were estimated in the muscle of fish. Residue of endosulfan was quantitatively estimated by GLC and the increase noted in endosulfan content was both dose and duration dependent. Simultaneously a significant decline was noted in total proteins, glycogen, cholesterol and total lipids. The decrease was directly proportional to duration. It can be concluded that endosulfan lowers important metabolic constituents thereby lowering the nutritive value of the fish.

Presents a case of a recently described species, Nyctibatrachus hussaini, as an invalid name due to lack of typification and deposition of type specimen in any museum. Proposes a replacement name for the species - Nyctibatrachus karnata- kaensis nom. nov., - as well as holotype designation and vouchering the same in a museum.

Describes a new bird species of the genus Liocichla discovered near Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary in western Arunachal Pradesh, India. While the taxon most closely resembles L. omeiensis, an endemic of China, the many points of difference in plumage, size and vocalisations indicate a new species. The known population is very small and only three (breeding?) pairs responded to song play-back in May 2006. The plumage and the vocalisations are distinctive and therefore the paucity of records suggests a small and highly localized population.

Levels of soluble and structural proteins decreased at 12, 24, 36 and 48 hrs in the hepatopancreas (HP) and mantle of the snails, progressively overtime of exposure of them to the lethal concentration (30mg/l) of nickel with a corresponding increase in the levels of free amino acids(FFA) and protease activity. The activities of alamne and aspartate aminotransferases (AlAT and AAT) and arginase initially increased at 12 hrs but decreased progressively at 24,36 and 48 hrs, whereas the glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) activity exhibited a progressive increase over the time of exposure. Both the levels of ammonia and urea increased, but the increase in ammonia level was progressive and the urea level was regressive overtime of exposure. In the sublethal concentration (3mg/l) the level of soluble proteins decreased at day 5 and increased progressively at days 10, 20 and 30, whereas the level of structural proteins increased over time of exposure from days 5 to 30. The protease activity elevated at days 5 and 10 (day 5 <60> 10), but suppressed significantly at days 20 and 30 (day 20 > 30). The free amino acid levels, however, decreased at all the days of exposure in the order day 5 <60> 10 <62> 20 <62> 30. The activities of AlAT, AAT and arginase increased in the order days 5 <60> 10 <60> 20 <62> 30, whereas the GDH activity increased upto 20 days with a decrease of it at day 30. The ammonia level though initially increased at day 5 and 10 but decreased at days 20 and 30, with an elevation in the level of urea at all the days of exposure. The over all changes revealed breakdown of tissue proteins, elevation of deamination and suppression of urea-ornithine cycle resulting in the accumulation of ammonia in HP and mantle on exposure of the snails to the lethal concentration of nickel, and the elevation of protein , synthesis through transamination and activation of urea-ornithine cycle in the snails exposed to the sublethal concentration of nickel. The degree of these changes were greater in HP than in mantle.

Static bioassay test of lead nitrate on freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium dayanum revealed 129.90, 126.48, 123.14 and 116.46 mg/liter, LC₅₀ values for 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours exposure respectively. The lead induced chief behavioral alterations were hyperactivity, erratic swimming rapid surfacing, aggressiveness, loss of body balance and profuse mucous secretion.

Individuals of the Indian False Vampire Bat, Megaderma lyra, were maintained in captive conditions to study daily urine output for more than two years. Urine was collected and quantified by placing sheets of absorbant paper on the floor of cages beneath the roosting bats. Seasonality in the urine output is reported.

A checklist of snakes rescued and seen in Amravati district of Maharashtra from January 1996 to August 2006 is presented. Thirty-two species belonging to six families were recorded. These include important records of Elachistodon westermanni,Coelognathits helena manticollaris, Oligodon taeniolatus, Eryx johnii, Lycodon striatus, Lycodon flavomaculatus, Calliophis melanurus, Boiga forsteni, Bungarus sindanus walli. All the snakes rescued alive were released into suitable habitats.

Freshwater disease transmitting snails Lymnaea (Radix) acuminata breed throughout the year in Kolkata, India. The expected length of life in these snails varied with the month of their emergence from the eggs. The life tables show that the zero-day old snails of March batch have minimum expectation of life of 59.16 days while those belonging to September batch may thrive up to 126.42 days. The average expected length of life for such snails (zero-day old) is 83.56 days. The variations in expected life span are influenced by the months of emergence of the snails from the eggs and the ages of the snails in respect to the months of a year. The findings warn us to be cautious in designing experiments with L. (R.) acuminata.

To study the pattern of chromosomal abnormalities in adult patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Study design: A retrospective study. Place and duration of study: January 1998 to June 2005 at the Cytogenetics department, Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi. Patients and Methods: A retrospective analysis of cytogenetic studies was carried out in patients who were diagnosed as ALL and were more than 15 years of age. Cytogenetic analysis was performed using a trypsin-Giemsa banding technique. Karyotypes were interpreted using International System for Cytogenetics Nomenclature (1995) criteria. Results: The requests were received for cytogenetic analysis of bone marrow specimens in 69 patients who were diagnosed as ALL. Cytogenetic results were available in 62 patients; out of which 51 were males and 11 were females. 44 patients (70%) were found to have a normal karyotype. In 18 patients (29%), abnormal karyotype was found. Conclusion: Cytogenetic studies should be part of the initial work up of every patient with ALL. Larger scale studies will help refine our understanding of the less common chromosomal patterns and conduct multivariate analysis to define the relative prognostic value of karyotypic results.
