Genetic diversity was studied among 40 different zone samples in the Indian short-nosed fruit bat, Cynopterus sphinx. Samples were collected from 127 locations in different districts of southern Tamil Nadu, India. Polymorphism at molecular level was studied by random amplified polymorphic DNA marker technique. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with 30 arbitrary decamer oligonucleotide primers was applied to the 40 zone samples. Out of 30 random primers screened, 22 gave reproducible polymorphic bands. PCR product of bat genome revealed a total of 234 bands, out of which 171 were found to be polymorphic. The dendrogram displaying the relative genetic similarities between the zones ranged from 0.42 to 0.92. Principal coordinates analysis revealed that the first two components accounted for 51.4% of the total variation. The results show that considerable genetic diversity was observed in this species from different zonal populations, possibly due to complete dispersal of juveniles of both sexes from their natal groups and gene flow between the zones. The results obtained from this study suggest not only a predictive framework for future studies, but also the use of genetic data in the management and meaningful conservation of this species.

Some of the ecological aspects of the species studied during June to November, 2005 are presented here. The animal was cultured ex situ and some notes on its embryonic development is presented.

The spent decontamination solutions generated from nuclear power reactors contain radionuclides of cobalt ( ⁶⁰Co, ⁵⁶Co and ⁵⁷Co) along with a large excess (10⁵) of non-radioactive metal ions (Fe, Ni and Cr). Previous studies demonstrated that bioremediation of Co from simulated effluents using fungal biomass can provide an alternative to conventional ion exchangers. In this study, author used several bacteria to further improve the process of bioremediation by decreasing biomass requirement and treatment period. Further, metabolite activation in specific bacterial species resulted in enhanced bioremediation of ⁶⁰Co from simulated effluent. Optimization of conditions in simulated effluent for the eight bacterial species to accomplish maximum Co removal is discussed.

One-year-plus age groups (yearlings) of Indian major carps (IMC) were artificially infected with the epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS) pathogen, Aphanomyces invadans and detailed sequential inflammatory response against the pathogen was delineated. For comparison, the corresponding age groups of EUS-resistant (common carp, CC) and susceptible (snakehead) fish species were used in the artificial infection experiments. In all the fish species the injected spores were able to germinate, but in susceptible fish species the germinated hyphae were able to proliferate massively and cause extensive necrotic pathology leading to severe gross lesions. On the other hand, in IMC and CC, the germinated hyphae were prevented from significant proliferation and spreading to the neighbouring tissues and the lesion area was healed over the experimental period of 15 days and no gross visible lesion was observed. Higher number of inflammatory cells and more efficient epithelioid cell layer formation are believed to play an important role in the defence mechanism of yearlings of IMC and CC against A. invadans infection.

The rate of cocoon production, cocoon incubation time, hatching ability, survival and hatchlings growth rate of the earthworm, Lampito mauritii kept in 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5, 1 and 0.5% substrate ratios (PSR) prepared from pressmud, cow dung and soil for 90 days were determined. The worms kept in soil alone for 90 days though showed a 100% survival value, but none laid cocoon during the course of study. The worms kept in 20, 15, 5.0, 1.0 and 0.5 PSR of pressmud and in all PSR of cow dung from 27 June 2003 to 24 September 2003 showed a marginal increase in their total weight at the end of 90 days. However, the per cent weight gain observed in all the PSR of cow dung was relatively high when compared to pressmud media. But marginal decreases with relatively more in pressmud and less in cow dung media were noted in the body weight of earthworm kept from 28 December 2003 to 26 March 2004. The worms kept in cow dung with 20 PSR for 90 days produced relatively more cocoons than the worms in other cow dung or pressmud media. A reduction trend was noted in the cocoon production of worms kept in 15, 10, 5.0, 2.5, 1.0 and 0.5 PSR of pressmud and cow dung over 20 PSR value. The worms kept in all PSR media in the second experimental period showed relatively lesser rate of cocoon production over the first experimental period. The cocoons collected in all the media invariably showed lesser but uniform incubation period with 100% hatching success. The hatching rate of cocoon also showed similar values but lies between 1.33 and 1.83. The per cent weight gains observed in the hatchlings kept in cow dung were relatively high when compared to hatchlings grown in pressmud but in accordance with PSR values, where there was a high PSR, the gain value was also high and vice versa. It could be inferred that the substrate ratio with 20% is considered to be a good medium for the culture of earthworm under laboratory condition and also no culture study could be made in Lampito mauritii at least during the months of January-March.

The ecology of Bulinus (Physopsis) globosus in four Odual communities was studied between October 2004 and September 2005. thirty-Six freshwater sites were investigated for snail occurrence and water quality. Habitat preference of snails was as follows : burrow pits (60%), streams (20%), swamps (10%), fishponds (5%) and rivers (5%). Snail population was highest in June (271) and lowest February (23). Infected snails were collected in all the months except in March and September Although percentage of snail infection (12.1%) was recorded during the dry months there was no distinct seasonality in transmission but the risk of infection appeared to be higher during the dry months. The borrow pits were the highest transmission sites (87.5%) because of their close proximity to the communities throughout the year.

Studies on human infections of Schistosoma spp. and the water chemistry of the snail vectors' habitats were conducted in the old Ahoada Local Government Area, Rivers State, Nigeria. Both intestinal and urinary schistosomiasis were diagnosed. Intestinal schistosomiasis was caused by the infection of Schistosoma intercalatum and had an overall prevalence of 0.9%. There were more infections (1.2%) in the males than in the females (0.3%). No infection occurred after 20 years of age in both sexes. Urinary schistosomiasis was restricted to the villages on the bank of Orasi river. It was widespread with an overall prevalence of 20.7%. Sex related infection was not statistically significant. Peak infection (25.7%) occurred in the (10-14) years old. Both prevalence and intensity of infection declined with increasing age. Water related occupations carried high risk of infection with the fishermen (25.7%) and farmers (15.7%). Snail vectors collected from the study area were Bulinus globosus and B. forskali. The dynamics of snail population and infection were seasonally influenced. With the establishment of the snail vectors in the area and the detection of some infection foci, a high infection rate which may approximate to an epidemic proportion is imminent.

Mass production of Artemia franciscana through batch culture system revealed high hatching rate and percentage efficiency from Utah than with California strains cysts. Observations showed significant growth in terms of length weight and culture period with rice bran-malt combination in comparison to rice bran alone fed A. franciscana. An Air Water Lift System (AWL) replaced the traditional method in removing the debris from the culture tank. An ideal stocking density of 5000 nauplii L^-1 yielded 6Kg of A. franciscana 3500 L^-1 week^-1.The cost benefit analysis on A. franciscana revealed an attractive profit of US $ 637.47/11 months.

Arunachal macaque Macaca munzala was discovered in 2003 from the high altitudes of western Arunachal Pradesh, and described as a new species in 2005. Virtually nothing is yet known of this new macaque species. In order to generate scientific knowledge on this primate, a field study was conducted to collect information on its ranging patterns, diet and behaviour. Two multimale multifemale troops were observed for a period of 112 h in Zemithang valley, Tawang District. The two troops, consisting of 22 and 13 individuals respectively, spent on an average, 48% of the observed time in moving and foraging, 36% in sitting and resting, and 16% in social interactions. Foraging alone accounted for 29% of the time-activity budget and was the major activity of the macaques throughout the study. The troops had home ranges of 28 ha and 16, ha respectively, much smaller than those of other macaque species studied in similar environments elsewhere. The macaques ranged largely in the secondary scrub habitat in the study area, where they were observed to feed mainly on Elaeagnus parvifolia and Erythrlna arborescens. Although fruits of the former species constituted more than 65.8% of the overall diet, this largely frugivorous diet is likely to be seasonal. Our preliminary results suggest the ranging and foraging behaviour of the Arunachal macaque to be largely in response to food resource availability. The species also appears to be a typical member of the sinica species-group of the genus in exhibiting a matrifocal society with tolerant social relationships.

In malathion treated sections the pseudostratified nature of epithelial fold gradually diminished. As the duration and dose of malathion increased there was significant decrease in epithelial cell height, width of intra-epithelial fold, epithelial fold, and nuclei length of migratory cells.

The existing systems are either less accurate or costly. There is need to develop a multi-channel digital temperature indicator which will be accurate and cost effective. In the present investigation, efforts have been made to develop a Multi-channel digital temperature indicator. The new system was tested for its application in muffle furnace and observed more reliable and accurate in various scientific studies.

Newly discovered assemblage of the Early Eocene (Ypresian) fish is recorded from the lower part of the Khuiala Formation of the Jaisalmer Basin, Western Rajasthan. It consists of exceptionally well preserved but mostly isolated teeth and some dermal denticles of fairly diverse ichthyofauna. Based on isolated teeth, 14 taxa belonging to six elasmobranch and five teleostean families have been identified, including a probably new but unnamed species of the nurse shark, Ginglymo-stoma. Other taxa comprise Galeorhinus sp., Hemiscyl-lium sp., Rhinobatos sp., Gymnura sp., Heterotorpedo sp., Dasyatis sp. 1, Dasyatis sp. 2, Coupatezia sp., Sphy-raena sp., Eutrichiurides sp., Sparus sp., Stephanodus lybicus and Diodon sp. Among these, Hemiscyllium and Coupatezia are new to the subcontinent. Among the Palaeocene-Eocene ichthyofaunas documented from ' India, this Khuiala assemblage is closest to the Lower Eocene fish assemblage from the subsurface Cambay Shale of Vastan Lignite Mine, Surat District, Gujarat. It is a dominantly shallow-water marine assemblage typically lacking coastal freshwater elements.

Long-range interracial hybridization experiments between a pair of cross fertile races, Drosophila nasuta nasuta (2n = 8) and Drosophila nasuta albomicans (2n = 6) have resulted in the evolution of two new karyotypic strains called cytoraces 1 and 2, which harbour chromosomes from both their parents and differ in their karyotypic composition, mating preference and mor-phometric traits. The effect of temperature on certain life-history traits such as lifetime fecundity, lifetime fertility, ovariole number and longevity of virgin and mated males and females was tested in the parents and two cytoraces. The results revealed that in most of the assessments, the newly evolved cytoraces showed maximum fitness, suggesting that the newly evolved cytoraces survive and live better than their parental races.

Baramati is one of the well-known regions of Pune District (Maharashtra), where most of the land is under sugarcane cultivation. In this region, irrigation is available on about 60,656.00 hectares. Due to heavy irrigation the soil becomes more saline in nature. In the present study the experiments were conducted on an earthworm Polypheretima elongata to find the lethal dose of sodium chloride. Well-acclimatized healthy earthworms were selected for toxicity test in soil for a period of 24 to 96 hours. Observed and calculated values were recorded. LD₅₀ values for sodium chloride were found to be 10.5,7.1,5.5, and 3.1 gm/kg of soil for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h respectively.

Study is aimed at assessing the existing fish fauna and their distribution pattern in River Narmada from Shahganj (Distt. Sehore) to Bandua (Distt. Hoshangabad), a stretch spread over 22 km in length, situated between 22°50'28°to 22°43'55"N and 77°36' 46 to 77°47'48" E. The investigation reveals presence of a total 47 species belonging to 29 genera, 15 families and 6 orders. The family Cyprinidae was observed as the most dominant of all, constituting 48% of the total fish population followed by Bagridae constituting 12% of the total collection. The study also encompasses the identification of preferential fish habitats (pools, riffles, runs and substrate differentiation) by means of analysing abundance and frequency of different species of fishes.

During the period population dynamics were studied on monthly basis for biostatical parameters such as Incidence of infection, Intensity of infection, Density of infection and Index of infection and observed the values are higher in during winter followed by summer and rainy.

Investigation on the influence of annual seasons and their role on helminth parasite had been carried out in the present study. The analysis of the data showed that the helminth parasites presented a cyclic variability and seasonal periodicity in their occurrence in the hosted fish. The incidence, intensity, density and index were recorded low in rainy season, ascended to maximum in winter season and touched the peak in summer season.

Effects caused after the treatment with heavy metals have been studied in laboratories all over the world. Most of the studies have been based on histological and histochemical observations. The present work has been undertaken to denote changes in the blood of Tilapia mossambica (Peters) after treatment with Cadmium Chloride. Treatment shows significant changes like irregular shape of cells, cytoplasmic vacuolation, ejection of nuclei and fragility of cells. Changes vary with the dosage of treatment and probably the period of exposure.

Intertidal meiofauna taxa diversity in three stations (Pulicat, Napier and Marina) of Chennai coast was studied during January 2003 to January 2005. Twenty six meiofaunal taxa were identified. Copepods, oligochaetes, archiannelids and turbellarians formed dominant and most prevalent taxa of three stations. Meiofaunal taxa diversity was generally high in Pulicat, while seasonally taxa diversity was high during summer.

Ecological studies on meiofaunal harpacticoid copepods of the intertidal region of three stations of the sandy beaches of the Chennai coast (Pulicat, Napier and Marina) were carried out from January 2003 to January 2005. Meiofaunal diversity, density and major environmental parameters of the sandy beaches are reported. Fifteen species of epibenthic and interstitial harpacticoids were recorded. The total density of harpacticoids ranged from 22 to 4225 No./10 cm. Among the three stations investigated, higher density was recorded in Marina and Pulicat stations than Napier station. Sand grain size, temperature and salinity showed minor variations in the three stations however, their influence is significant in controlling the diversity and density of harpacticoids. The low diversity and density of Napier station can be attributed to higher polluted state of the station.

The diversity of meiofauna of three stations (Pulicat, Royapuram and Marina) along the coast of Chennai (13°06'N, 80°8'E) were investigated from January 2003 to January 2005. One hundred and four species of meiofauna were recorded, of which 95, 88 and 75 species were reported from Marina, Pulicat and Royapuram stations, respectively. The meiofaunal groups recorded are Foraminifera, Ciliata, Cnidaria, Turbellaria, Nemertina, Nematoda, Gastrotricha, Rotifera, Kinorhyncha, Polychaeta, Archiannelida, Oligochaeta, Sipuncula, Cladocera, Ostracoda, Harpacticoida, Cyclopoida, Thermosbaenacea, Isopoda, Cumacea, Halacaroidea, Insecta (Collembola), Gastropoda, Bivalvia and Holothuroidea. Nemertina, Gastrotricha, Sipuncula, Thermosbaenacea, Cumacea, Halacaroidea, Insecta (Collembola), Gastropoda and Holothuroidea are the groups reported for the first time from the Chennai coast. The three stations showed similar diversity with regard to the major meiofaunal groups viz. nematodes, harpacticoid copepods, turbellarians and polychaetes.
