Attempt has been made to evaluate the performance of the bivoltine sex-limited cocoon colour breeds with normal breeds and their polyvoltine x bivoltine hybrids under three different temperature and humidity conditions (25±1°C (65±5% RH), 31±1°C (50±5% Rlft-and 36±1°C (85±5% RH). By utilizing four bivoltine breeds viz. CSR2 normal, CSR2(SL) sex-limited for cocoon color, NB4D2 and CSR8(SL) sex-limited for cocoon color and 6 polyvoltine breeds viz. PM, Nistari, BL67, MY1, RD1, and PV1, 24 polyvoltine x bivoltine hybrids were prepared and studied. Significant differences were noticed for majority of the characters in bivoltine and polyvoltine breeds and their hybrids at different environmental conditions. The results of this study indicate that the performance of sex-limited cocoon colour bivoltine breed CSR2(SL) was marginally better than the normal bivoltine breed, CSR2 and also indicate that hybrids of sex limited breed CSR2(SL) with all polyvoltine breeds performed better than other breeds at adverse conditions. Therefore, it is concluded that sex-limited cocoon colour breed CSR2(SL) can be used as male component for preparation of polyvoltine x bivoltine hybrids throughout the year.

Eleven induced breeding exercises were conduced on Cyprinus carpio (L.) in die CIFE-D81 Hatchery at Jodhpur from 20.12.98 to 5.3.2000 using ovatide @ 0.3 ml/ kg body weight of female-and @ O.I ml/kg body weight for male brooder. The optimum water temperature (21.6-25.3°C) was observed during breeding exercises. The eggs (1.15-3.45 lakhs) were obtained by varying the injection time (9.00 am-4.30 pm). The fertilization percent (58-94%) and hatching percent (65-90%) demonstrates that ovatide is a convenient ovulating agent for induced breeding.

Present specimens differ from all the valid species of the subgenus Dichelyne (Neocueultunellus) in the absence of cervical papillae. Further. It can be differentiated from all species of the genus except D. (N.) longispiculum in the absence of gubernaculums, but it differs from it in the presence of precloacal sucker.

Study has been undertaken on 1000 subjects, 50% were from urban and 50% from rural population. In 445, 274 (61.6%) women were in the state of premenopause and 171 (38.4%) in. postmenopausal status. Out of total (445) women, 135 (30.3%). 37 (8.3%), 16 (3.6%) and 53 (11.9%) were borderline, newly detected, known and total diabeiics, respectively. Borderline (33-9%), newly detected (11.6%). known (7.6%) and total disbetic cases (19.3%) were more in menopausal women as compared to the premenopausal women. Out of total diabetics 20 females in premenopausal status, 17 (85%) were newly detected but postmenopausal 33 women, these were 20 (66.6%). The data also reflected th0at obesity was more pronounced in females as compared to males. Value for body mass index<62>25 were 30.8% in females and 22.5% in males.

Attempt has been made to assess and validate newly developed double hybrids of the silkworm Bombyx mori L under large scale in house testing as per the farmers practice. The double hybrids (D2 x S8) x (SI x D15), (D7 x S5) x (D13 x SI), (CSR2 x CSR 27) x (D7 x S5) and commercially popular single hybrid CSR2 x CSR4 were reared in large scale with 200 dfls each and evaluated Data indicate that double hybrids have recorded 20-24% improvement in fecundity compared to the single hybrid component. Among the three double hybrids evaluated (D7 x S5) x (D13 x SI) is significantly superior over the other hybrids in cocoon weight (2.025 g), cocoon shell weight (0.459 g) and cocoon yield (76.328 kg/ 50,000 eggs).

The present study to assess the antibacterial acivity of seaweeds from the vellar and Uppanar estuarie was carried out using three different solvents namely aceone, methanol and diethyl ether. A total of 6 seaweeds were tested against 8 pathogens. Off which, the antibacterial activity was noted to be the maximum in Phaeophyceae followed by Rhodophyceae and Chlorophyceae. Of the tested pathogens Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus subtilis were highly susceptible whereas Escherichia coli, vibrio parahaemolyticus, - Klebsiella pneumoniae and vibrio cholerae were highly resistant against tested algal extracts. Among the solvents diethyl ether was more effective and the series of activity was followed by methanol and acetone. Comparing the fresh and dry extracts, samples of dry extracts were more active. Overall, the samples collected from the Uppanar extuary showed higher activity when compared to the samples from Vellar estuary.

Siganus canaliadatus fry with of an average weight of 1.22 ± 0.6 g and an average length of 3.6 ± 0.8 cm were fed for 60 days with six isonitrogenous experimental diets viz. A, B, C, D, E, and diet F having 35 per cent protein. The diet A, B and C were prepared from the animal protein while diet .D, E, and F were incorporated with the plant protein. The fry were fed @ 10 % of body weight twice daily. Significantly higher (p<60> 0.05) food conversion efficiency, specific growth rate and protein efficiency ratio were observed in fry fed on diet 'F followed by diet, B, E, D, A and C. Survival ranged between 50 to 80 per cent Significantly higher survival was observed in fry fed on diet E. However, there was no significant difference (p<62> 0.05) in rate of survival of fry fed on diets, A, B, C, D and E Based on ANOVA it was found that S. canaliadatus fry showed better growth on diet prepared from plant protein sources (Sareassum tenerrimum).

The waterspreadarea and the effective waterspreadarea of these water bodies was estimated. The fish production of these water bodies in the district have been estimated. The study has been conducted for five (5) consecutive years from 2000-01 to 2004-05. The picture emerged on the fish production in various freshwater bodies in the district indicates that the fish production must be enhanced through modern management practices and also with artificial and supplementary diet.

Susceptibility status of two flea species namely Xenopsylla cheopis and X. astia, collected from Distt. Baghpat of western U.P. India has been discussed. The fleas were tested for 4% DDT by WHO standard methods for 1 hr. The Xenopsylla cheopis showed 82.69% mortality while X. astia showed 92.66%. Males were found more susceptible than females in both the species. The results showed that the fleas of Xenopsylla cheopis possessed a considerable degree of resistance to DDT. It is inferred that the fleas have been exposed to DDT in local environment due to various sanitary conditions.

The species is very similar to S. prasbadi in its body colouration. However, it has shallower body, shorter predorsal length, shorter length of caudal peduncle, absence of a black spot at the base of dorsal fin, dissociated black bar at the base of caudal fin, less number of dorsal and caudal fin rays.

Myiasis is a condition-originating from the invasion of tissues or organs of man or animals by fly larvae (maggots).It is commonly seen in the domestic and wild animals but occurs rarely in man also. This tissue invasion in man by maggots is generally a well recognized complication of neglected wounds. A case of human myiasis in a 17-yrs old male has been reported following trauma in wrestling. The wound on left leg was neglected leading to oviposition by flies. The causative maggots were identified as larvae of Crysomya bazziana belonging to family Calliphorjdae.

Fig pollinating wasps lay their eggs in the fig flowers. It is assumed that there is a short span of time during which a tig crop should be pollinated. Hence, pollination of figs is thought to depend on efficiency of the wasps in locating receptive trees. Attractiveness of three Ficus Species, namely Ficus racemosa, F. drupacea and F. hispida to their pollinator wasps were analysed by correlation respective host Ficus. This emphasizes the -need for explaining how fig-pollinator mutualism is maintained.

Among the abiotic factors, pesticides are known to have much effect on different physiological mechanisms in annelids. In the study the effects of two pesticides such as monocrotophos 35EC and endosulfan 25EC on the nitrogenous excretory products of nephridia of the earthworm Pheretima elongata were determined during premonsoon (January-May), mansoon (June-September) and postmansoon (October-December) seasons.. Exposure of worms to two concentrations such as 1 ml/kg of soil and 2 ml/kg of soil at 0.07 ppm of monocrotophos and 0.06 ppm of endosulfan produced a significant (P<60> 0.01) decrease in the nephridial urea and uric acid contents in all 3 seasons. When the results were compared the endosulfan was found to be more toxic than monocrotophos.

Biology and behaviour of Caryedon crineus Arora, infesting pods and seeds of Cassia occidentalis (L.) was studied. Female beetle lays 16-27 eggs on pods and seeds of host plant during nights, which hatch after about 9 days. All larval instars are voracious feeders and their development is completed inside the host seed. Larval duration lasts for 23-27 days and last instar larva emerges out of seed by cutting a hole and then undergoes pupation outside. Pupal duration inside coccon lasts for 51-60 days during favourable period and 191-220 days during adverse conditions and adult emerged out after 85-96 days.

After certain intervals the level of glycogen and glucose were studied in foot, mantle and hepatopancreas. The glycogen level decreased while glucose level | increased significantly (P<60>0.05} in acute as well as chronic exposure. Significant glycogen decrease was found in hepatopancreas followed by foot and mantle.

Different concentrations of β-ecdysterone (No-E-2003) in solution in the newly emerged female insect from day 1 to 30 days during the genotrophic cycle stimulates vitellogenin synthesis in the adipose tissue. This was found to be the effect of 'A' type of neurosecretory cells and inhibition of its hormone secretion regressed the activity of Corpus allatum (CA). On the contrary, the 'B' type cells of the pars- intercerebralis of EDNH system remain unaffected and their secretions reach the hemolymph via Corpus cardiacum (cc) and acts in conjunction with ecdysone to regulate the uptake of vitellogenin in the ovaries. This uptake is rather slower in the presence of juvenile hormone (JH). It is concluded that 'B' type neurosecretory cell hormone is comparable to a parsian -Lom OMP described by Girardie et al. (1996a,b) in Locusta migratoria that influence egg development.

Study was undertaken on three adult Emu birds. The two large os coxae were less widely separated. No symphysis was found between opposite pelvic bones. The ilium was lying vertical to the long axis of the body. The fossa renalis was absent. The short pre acetabular part was in the form of rough quadrilateral plate while the long post acetabular part was in the form of elongated triangle. The acetabulum was perforated. The large antitrochanter was found on caudodorsal part of acetabulum. The ischium resembled stylohyoid of cattle. The foramen ischaidicum was in the form of a long iIio-ischiatic incisure. Pubis was a thin rod like bone directed backwards parallel to the ischium. The large ischiopubic incisure was divided incompletely into oval obturator foramen cranially and elongated slit caudally. In femur fovea capitis was absent. Trochanter major was very large. A large foramen was found on posterior surface of femur. Trochanter minor was in the form of a small tubercle. The distal extremity consisted trochlea with asymmetrical ridges cranially and asymmetrical condyles caudally. The patella was absent.

Highlights the species diversity of Malacofauna (Gastropods and Bivalves) in terms of species richness and equitability, in Similipal Biosphere Reserve. Previous Z.S.I, study records only 2 species of Gastropods from the Tiger reserve. The present inventory, takes the faunal list to 20 species, under 9 genera and 11 families with taxonomic accounts and their habitat/ecology.

Oryza sativa Linnaeus (Graminae) have been recorded as the larval host plant of Pelopicfas mathias (Fabricius). The gross morphology and duration of various life history stages have been recorded. The larval and oviposition behaviour has been studied in details. A tachinid parasitoid, Podomyia setosa Dol has been observed to attack the larvae of the species under reference.
