Higher values of the pollutants pre-valid in peak months (December and January) of winter than in summer (May and June) and rainy (August and September) seasons. There was no significant variation in temperatue, relative humidity and wind velocity at the sites.

Mandiakudar is a rural area near Rourkela, the steel city of Orissa. A large number of mini cement plants are in operation in and around Rourkela to meet the increasing demand of not only the steel plant but also the locality. The particulate matters of the dust exhausted from the cement plants are released to the air and it creates considerable environmental pollution. In order to monitor the ambient air quality of mandiekudar bassed on suspended particutate, sulphur dioxide (SO₂) and oxides of nitrogen (NO₂) a fact finding survey was conducted for a period of 3 year from January 1997 to December 1999. The amount of different pollutants are compared with the standard limits recommended by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and air quality parameters and/or air quality indices (AQI) are also worked out on that basis.

It is possible because the addition of new potential field, that means magnetic field, changes the energetic state of equilibrium occurring in spinning friction of slides.

It has been developed a 3D route planner, called 3DPLAN, which employs the A^* algorithm to find optimum paths. The A^* algorithm has a major advantage compared to other search methods because it is guaranteed to give the optimum path. In spit of this significant advantage, no one has previously used A^* in 3D searches as far as authors are aware. The probable reason for this is the belief that the computational cost of using A^* for 3D route planning would be prohibitive. Shows that, on the contrary, it is quite feasible to use A^* for 3D searches if one employs the new mobility and threat heuristics that has been developed. These new heuristics substantially speed up the A^* algorithm so that the run times are quite reasonable for the large grids that are typical of 3D searches.

In the past, resonant converters have generally been analyzed and characterized for constant output voltage power supplies. When applied to power supplies, in which output current is regulated, the topological requirements of a resonant converter differ. This means, a resonant converter topology not suitable for constant voltage power supplies may become attractive for constant current power supplies. This fact is illustrated here. The operation of a parallel resonant converter (PRC) as a constant current power supply is presented. A PRC operating at resonant frequency gives constant output current. If designed properly, the output current can become nearly independent of load over a wide range of switching frequency. Repeated simulations and laboratory experiments on prototype converter overify the analysis.

A study was carried out to assess the sulphur - dioxide (SO₂)and nitrogen oxides (NO₂ concentration present in the ambient air in chennai metropolitan city from 1998 to 2000. The study was conducted at 5 sampling stations across the city. The collected data were subjected to statistical techniques. Such as Pearson correlation at 5 level or significance and non-parametric Wilcoxon signed rank test to study the variation in air quality in the city over the period from 1998 to 2000. The observed data were plotted against the expected data for every year to analyze the deviation of the data from the normal status. The collected data was curve fitted into cubic polynomial. The satistical analysis revealed that there was significant decrease in concentration of primary pollutants in the ambient air in the city. The levels of SO₂ and NO_x concentration increases, annual mean of these two pollutants was found to lie below NAAOS values.

Indian coals have difficult washing characteristics. The washablity characteristics are further getting deteriorated as a result of large scale mechanized mining operations. In many of the preparation plants, these coals are processesed by using jigs and dense medium baths for coarser sizes, dense medium cyclones for intermediate sizes (13*0.5 mm), and flotation of sizes below 0.5mm. Heavy medium cyclones operate inferior at sizes below 1mm and coal particles above 0.25mm respond inferior during flotation. Reports on Western coals indicated that the overall performance of the coal preparation plant could be enhanced by adopting water based separation techniques like Floatex density separators as a supplement to heavy medium cyclone and flotation in the size range between 1.0*0.25mm. Till date no attempts have been made to evaluate the performance of this technique for treating Indian coals. Thus, in the present study attempts are made to evaluate optimum size range for separation inside a Floatex density separator. Coal sample (5mm*0.159mm in size) from Moonidih washery containing 36.6% ash content was treated. The size by size particle separation studies have indicated that coal between. 1.2*0.212 mm size responds good for separation.

The lead-zinc operating mine Rampura-Agucha of Hindusthan Zinc Limited is the most promising one in India. the lead flotation concentrate produced from this mine is invariably contaminated with graphite, which is a deleterious mineral as it reduces the lead sinter strength during further metallurgical operations. Studies carried out in the operating beneficiation plant at Rampura-Agucha mines of Hindustan Zinc Limited, on a mine scale multi-gravity separator, for reducing the graphite content in the lead flotation concentrate are presented. Effect of important variables like wash water, drum inclination, drum revolutions, feed flow rate and feed grade on the metallurgical results like lead and graphite grades and lead revocery are highlighted. Further, suitable mathematical models are developed for predicting the metallurgical performance.

Reports the results of a numerical study of mixed convection of low Prandtl number fluids in a vertical clindrical annulus, when both the walls of the annulus are maintained at the same constant temperature that is lower than the fluid temperature. The bottom and top of the annulus are inlet and outlet respectively as far the flow is concerned. Numerical results for heat transfer rates and flow characteristics for 1≤A≤10, 2≤DR≤6, 0.01≤Ri≤100, 200≤Re≤2 x 10⁴, and 0.007≤Pr≤0.026 are reported. The study clearly establishes that Ri. Pr product is a crucial dimensionless parameter in such flow.After a parameric study a, correlation for Nusselt number has been developed for the above range of parameters.

Coal and nonmetal mining used about 4.3 billion pounds of explosives and blasting agents during 2001 in the United States. A major part of this consumption was related to surface mining. Mine Safety and Health Administration accient data indicate that flyrock and lack of blast area security were the primary causes of blasting-related injuries in surface mining. Fatal injuries due to lack of blast area security were primarily caused by failure to clear blast area orinadequate access control to the blast area. At a coal mine, a neighbor walked into the blast area and was fatally injured. The blaster could not see the victim entering the blast area from the firing station. In another case, a passenger in a vehicle was fatally injured by flyrock because highway traffic was not monitored during the blast. In another example, a dozer operator entered a blast area due to lack of access control. Several fatalities resulted from using inadequate or no blasting shelter. A crane operator was fatally injured while standing in the open about 120 ft from the blast site. In another instance, a helper, standing about 150 ft waay from the edge of a blast, was fatally injured by flyrock. In a limestone mine an equipment operatory was fatally injured while guarding access roads in a pickup truck. Briefly describes six representative fatalities due to flyrock and lack of blast area secutry in coal and nonmetal mines. Several mines were visited to collected information relative to working practices aimed at mitigating blasting hazards. Salient information obtained through these visits is presented.

Scouring in rocky bed downstream of spilway with flip-bucked is complicated due to the complex hydraulic and geological conditions. The estimation of various parameters determiining the erosion resistance of the rock is difficult. The prediction of the local scour downstream of spillways can be made by means of oversimplified equations. These equations are sufficiently good for assessment of initial scourgeometry to ensure the safety of dam as well as its abutments. Many researchers have developed emprirical formulae considering various hydraulic as well as geological parameters. In the study, extensive experimental results were collected and analyzed in order to investigate the effect of different parameters on scour downstream of a flip bucket spillway. It was found that the scour paramenters are function of downstream Froude number (discarge parmeter), ratio of head to tail water depth, ration of radius of flip bucket to tail wather depth, ratio of sediment means size to tail water depth and lip angle of the bucket. The functional relationships are expressed by dimensionless equations.

It is seen that, if the temperature gradient to the plates is adverse, when the heat flux at the boundaries is fixed the critical Rayleigh number is zero, irrespective of the value of the anisotropy further a decrease in the anisotropy parameter from its isotropic value causes a decrease in the growth rate for both the Darcy and Brinkman models when either the heat flux or the temperature at the boundaries is fixed.

With the installation of strong motion arrays in various seismically active parts of the world, ensembles of records originating from the same event are readily available. These are being studied to understand spatial variability of ground motion in terms of cross correlation, cross power spectral density and coherence functions. However, the sutdies are possible since records are available at specifie distances. The natural qustion arises, how a set of strong motion records obtained from arbitrarily located stations are interrelated ? To this end, the paper analyses Indian strong motion array records and proposes a new strong motion parameter Force Centre. The acceleration time history at any station is attached with a control area surrounding the station and the force Centre is found statistically as a point of application of resultant of resultant of coplanar area weighted acceleration time histories. The Force Centre in X-Y plane is shown to be closely linked with exicentre whereas the locus of force Centre in Y-Z and X-Z plane gives good estimate of focal depth.

With the introduction of large diameter deep hole blasting in underground metal mines in India for extraction of ores, there was a serious concern for safety and stability of underground structures. Deals with vibration monitoring and demage assessment in five different metal mines. The damage was assessed by visual observation and the rock mass conditions were evaluated through RMR values. Attempts were made to correlate the extent of damage with peak particle velocity (PPV). Using the data generated, a generalised predictor equation was derived for prediction of ground vibration in other mines. The analysis of the field data indicates that vibrations produced by large and small blasts in a mine can be grouped together to derive a predictor equation for the same mine. The degree of damage to the rock mass vis-a-vis supports requirement depends on the intensity of ground vibration and rock mass quality. In general, falling of loose pieces' is expected at PPV greater than 200 mm/s and formation of new cracks' at PPV exceeding 300 mm/s.
