For the involvement of Rhizomania resistance genes in breeding programs, tagging these genes by molecular markers is necessary. In this study, some breeding populations and commercial varieties of sugar beet originated from Holly source were used for the validation of three repulsion SCAR molecular markers correlated with ELISA and field resistance. Comparison between ELISA and field resistance and molecular markers showed that repulsion marker ZN5 had 96% and - 391 - 98% agreement with ELISA and field resistance, respectively with 95% and 100% presence in susceptible and resistant varieties, respectively. Therefore, this marker can be used for screening of homozygous lines resistant to rhizomania originated from Rz1 gene source.

The present investigation was done on six pruning time's i.e 15th May, 15th June, 15th July, 15th August, 15th Sept and Control and seven different genotypes such as. Sardar, RHR-Guv-58, RHR-Guv-60, RHR-Guv-14, RHR-Guv-16, RHR-Guv-3 and RHR-Guv-6. The experiment was laid out in factorial randomized block design with fourty two treatments replicated two times. Growth characters were significantly influenced by different genotypes. The plant spread, number of sprouted shoots, girth of shoot, shoot length was recorded maximum in Sardar. The Minimum time required for initiation of new shoots was observed in 15th May pruning time and in Sardar and also in their interactions. As well as, with respect to marketable yield 15th July pruning time was found to be better.

The acute toxicity studies on chlorpyriphos, cartap hydrochloride, chlorantraniliprole and profenophos to the target pest rice leaffolder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenee) in order to fix the baseline data of these chemicals to calibrate discriminating dose indicated that the Lc50 and Lc95 obtained for subsequent six generations without selection pressure to insecticides like chlorpyriphos, cartap hydrochloride, chlorantraniliprole and profenophos (F11 to F16 generation) decreased from 20.146 to 15.334, 18.798 to 14.704, 2.559 to 2.246, 15.003 to 12.708 ppm and 55.815 to 45.759, 49.957 to 39.537, 4.334 to 3.519 and 43.532 to 35.788 ppm respectively showing gradual decline with generations. Considering the susceptible population of rice leaffolder, the tentative discriminating doses (DD) by seedling dip method to third instar larvae were 46, 40, 4 and 36 ppm for chlorpyriphos, cartap hydrochloride, chlorantraniliprole and profenophos, respectively.

The study was conducted with fourteen ratios of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P2O5) fertilizer with a constant potassium level (25 kg K2O ha-1). The dry pod yield increased due to increasing N/P ratios upto 0.78. The treatment receiving N/P fertilizer ratio of 0.57 (basal application of 20 kg N, 60 kg P2O5, 25 kg K2O ha-1 + foliar application of nitrogen @ 7 kg N ha-1 at 45 days after sowing and foliar application of nitrogen @ 7 kg N ha-1 at 60 days after sowing) recorded significantly higher dry pod yield (4361 kg ha-1), days total number of pods plant-1 (29.53), number of double and triple seeded pods per 200 pods (181.33 and 36.33, respectively), number of good kernels per 100 g of kernels (384.67) and less number of shriveled kernels per 100 g of kernels (17). This treatment also recorded significantly higher leaf area index (5.817), leaf area ratio (2.228 dm2 g-1), total dry matter production (39.359 g), more number of root nodules at 45 and 60 (28.13 and 34.80) and their dry weight (0.310 and 0.272 g) respectively. With respect to economics also the same treatment recorded significantly higher gross monetary return (Rs. 139522 ha-1) and net monetary return (Rs. 107448 ha-1) and it was on par with the N/P fertilizer ratios of 0.70, 0.52, 0.54 and - 390 - 0.43 (Rs. 106171, 103448, 103323 and 104065 ha-1) respectively.

Field experiment was conducted in clay loam soil to evaluate the influence of different ratios of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers and top dressing of nitrogen fertilizers in TAG 24 cultivar during Kharif 2011. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design. The treatments comprised of 14 N/P fertilizer ratios. The N/P fertilizer ratio of 0.57 recorded significantly higher seed oil content (47.23), oil yield (1575 kg ha-1), seed germination (94.00%), and seedling vigour index (2472.8) as compared to control and potassium level alone. With respect to nutrient uptake, the same N/P fertilizer ratio shown significant effect on nitrogen uptake (225.53 kg ha-1), phosphorus (21.33 kg ha-1) and potassium (112.31 kg ha-1) over control and other N/P fertilizer ratios and it was on par with N/P ratio of 0.52, 0.70 and 0.78.

Alloplasmic Brassica juncea lines with B. oxyrrhina cytoplasm show stable cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) but display chlorosis due to incompatible interaction between the plastid and the nuclear genomes. Normal, green CMS cybrids were developed through somatic hybridization between chlorotic CMS line and B. juncea. This study was aimed at characterization of the mitochondrial genome constitution of two chlorosis-corrected B. juncea cybrids. Comparative RFLP analysis of parents and cybrids with mitochondrial gene specific probes revealed B. oxyrrhina specific pattern in cybrids for atp4, ccmfn2, nad4L and cox3 but atp1 and orf108 gave novel pattern indicating recombinant mitochondria. RT-PCR showed cotranscription of orf108 and atp1 in the cybrids. PCR analysis with mitochondrial genome specific primers revealed that the cybrids had mostly B. oxyrrhina like mitochondrial genome. The two cybrids showed - 389 - identical RFLP and PCR pattern suggesting that they are derived from the same event. Interestingly, RFLP pattern indicated two copies of orf108-atp1 in the cybrid. One of the copies was derived from intermolecular recombination between B. juncea and B. oxyrrhina whereas the second copy resulted from intramolecular recombination between a pair of short repeat regions. The results show that orf108-atp1 region is recombinationally active and could be involved in causing male sterility.

Aquilaria malaccensis is one of the 15 tree species of the genus Aquilaria widely distributed in the Indo-Malaysian region. Its resin (Agar or Gaharu) is widely known for its use in the production of highly valued incense and traditional medicine throughout Asia. The species has been listed as 'Vulnerable' in the IUCN red list of threatened species due to its over exploitation. In the present study, for the first time, next generation sequencing platform (Ion Torrent PGMTM) was used to obtain a large number of sequences containing microsatellites for A. malaccensis. A total of 527, 425 high quality reads were identified, which contained 4138 SSRs. In these SSRs, the number of dinucleotide repeats were the most frequent one (74.77%). Primers were developed for 93 loci; of these 82 loci were successfully amplified and 47 were polymorphic across a panel of 42 genotypes. Fifteen loci with at least three or more alleles were chosen for detailed characterization. The observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.25 to 0.90, whereas the expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.24 to 0.89, with 5.9 alleles per locus on average. Simple matching dissimilarity coefficients and cluster analysis revealed significant diversity among the genotypes. The study suggested that PGMTM sequencing is a rapid technique for developing microsatellite markers. The microsatellite markers developed in the present study would be useful in comprehensive genetic diversity studies aimed towards the conservation and germplasm management of Aquilaria.

An experiment was carried out at Main Horticulture Research and Extension Centre, University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot. In this experiment fifteen different rooting media were taken to evaluate roots growth, vegetative growth and survival of guava air layers in cv. Sardar during the year 2014-15. Among these treatments, the sphagnum moss was found to be better rooting media for number of leaves (12.33), number of shoots (3.66) and survival percentage (72.22%) which is on par with cocopeat. For highest number of primary and secondary roots (8.17 and 6.67), length and longest length of primary roots (4.77 cm and 6.00 cm), plant height at 30 and 60 days (30.70 cm and 31.23 cm), diameter of roots (1.47 mm) and leaf area (5.07 cm2) - 388 - was found to be maximum in cocopeat. The coir pith was recorded lesser plant height at 30 and 60 days after transferring layers to polybags (30.00 and 30.17) respectively, number of leaves (1.66), number of shoots (1.02) and leaf area (3.30 cm2) after transferring of layers to polybags.

For improving the yield potential of varieties and hybrids the decision should be made about the choice of right type of parents for hybridization. Based on the determination of divergence for the characters pertaining to green and ripe chilli all the 24 genotypes could meaningfully be grouped into 10 clusters. Cluster I was comprises maximum 7 and 5 genotypes for green and ripe chilli. Highest percent contribution characters to the divergence of the genotypes based on green chilli characters were fruit weight (22%), pedicel length (20.4%), pedicel: fruit ratio (13.5%), days to first flowering (12.19%), seeds fruit-1 (9.88%), fruit yield plant-1 (9.77%), fruit length (6.66) and fruit plant-1 (3.4%) and based on ripe chilli, characters were dry weight of ripe fruit (45.05%), fruit yield (26.09%), days to first flowering (8.3%), seeds fruit-1(7.1%), pedicel length (6.34%) and fruit weight (5.1%). The genotypes from the Cluster V, VII, VIII and XI could be selected for hybridization programme to produce highly heterotic genotypes as these were found to be most divergent with a number of desirable traits. Therefore, diverse promising genotypes viz., AC 575, AC 573, Hyb 3(2)-2, AC 587, AC 571, Hyb 3(2)-1 and AC 576 emerged as outstanding which may be used as such as breeding lines to develop the varieties after rendering to stability through necessary purification by selfing and single plant selection.

Treatments comprised offour nutrient management practices and three - 387 - foliar application nutrients were tested in split plot design with three replications. Results revealed that application of FYM +Rec. NPK + Borax @ 5 kg + ZnSo4 @ 10 kg ha-1recorded maximum yield and oil quality. Foliar application of 2% urea recorded highest yield and oil quality attributes. Application of FYM +Rec. NPK + Borax @ 5 kg + ZnSo4 @ 10 kg ha-1 along with foliar spray of 2% urea at 30 and 60 DAS improved yield and nutrient uptake of groundnut. Highest net return and benefit cost ratio was observed with combined application of FYM +Rec. NPK + Borax @ 5 kg + ZnSo4 @ 10 kg ha-1 andfoliar spray of 2% urea at 30 and 60 DAS.

To study the effect of nutrient management practices and foliar spray on yield of groundnut. Treatments consists of four nutrient management practices viz., FYM 7.5 t ha-1, Recommended NPK (25:50:25 kg ha-1), FYM @ 7.5 t ha-1 + Rec. NPK (25:50:25 kg ha-1) and FYM +Rec. NPK + Borax @ 5 kg + ZnSo4 @ 10 kg ha-1 in main plots and three foliar spray viz., Absolute control (No spray), Foliar spray of 2% urea at 30 DAS and Foliar spray of 2% urea at 30 and 60 DAS in sub plots. Application of FYM +Rec. NPK + Borax @ 5 kg + ZnSo4 @ 10 kg ha-1 significantly increased the growth, yield attributes and yield over other nutrient management practices.Highest net return (Rs 17,520) and benefit cost ratio (1.73) was estimated with application of FYM +Rec. NPK + Borax @ 5 kg + ZnSo4 @ 10 kg ha-1 only 0.2% urea foliar spray at 30 and 60 DAS significantly improved the growth, yield,highest net returns (16,600 Rs ha-1) and B: C ratio (1.68) over control. Integrated use of FYM +Rec. NPK + Borax @ 5 kg + ZnSo4 @ 10 kg ha-1 along with foliar spray of 2% urea at 30 and 60 DAS was good for groundnut cultivation.

A study was conducted to analyze divergence in 49 genotypes of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under terminal heat stress environment. The results indicated a good amount of genetic divergence among the wheat genotypes under heat stress. The genotypes were grouped into five clusters with maximum intra cluster distance of 70.392 (Cluster V) and maximum inter cluster distance was recorded between clusters III and V (72.11). Principal component analysis extracted seven principal components accounting 80.9% of total genetic variation. The identification of genotypes displaying heat stress tolerance may be useful in breeding.

National wheat programme of India was examined for progress made in yield and quality in ten different production environments. During the period 2000-16, productivity improved in three environments namely timelysown condition of north-western plains zone (NWPZ) and timely and late-sown wheats of central zone (CZ). Certain non-grain parameters like plant height, vegetative period and crop duration were the significant contributors in these environments. Improvement in grain quality was zonespecific but simultaneous increase in productivity and value addition was witnessed in the most important region of the country i.e., NWPZ. Chapati quality and physical grain quality improved in the Indo-Gangetic plains and peninsular zone (PZ). Amongst the baked products; quality of the cookies was improvised in the hills whereas progress in bread loaf volume was visible in NWPZ and PZ. In quality components, protein content was enhanced in PZ and gluten characteristics were improved in NWPZ. Except reduction in bread quality score, no major change occurred in grain quality of the new varieties developed for hot and dry climate of central India.

Phalsa (Grewia subinaequalis D.C.) grown worldwide but in India acupise large area. Phalsa has great utility and its own importance and usefulness but its cultivation is restricted and confined to only small scale in a particular area. An experiment was designed physico-chemical changes in phalsa fruits. The maximum TSS was observed (15%), reducing sugar (10.10%), Total sugars (12.25%), ascorbic acid (37.08 mg/100g), anthocyanins (205.00 mg/100g) at 40 days of intervals while the maximum acidity (2.47%) at 24 days of intervals and the non- reducing sugar (4.15%) at 16 days intervals. Rice root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne graminicola is one of the major pests of rice cropping system and is responsible for considerable yield reductions. Out of various management options tried so far, the resistance against M. graminicola in rice could be the most valuable in alleviating this problem. In present study a rice cultivar Abhishek exhibited a strong resistance with least number of galls (2galls/plant) and a kind of necrotic browning of roots which is typical of R-gene mediated resistance response. In order to map the gene governing resistance to root-knot nematode, the cultivar Abhishek was crossed with the Bangla Patni, a highly susceptible genotype to generate F2 mapping population. Using bulked segregant analysis, a marker HvSSR10-21 was identified to be putatively linked with the resistant locus in cv. Abhishek with significant LOD score. The significant LOD score value indicates the linkage between identified marker and the resistant locus against M. graminicola. We designate this gene as Mg1(t).

A study was done during rabi season (November to March) 2009-10. Results showed that maximum seed yield (1405 kg ha-1), straw yield (1946 kg ha-1), N and S uptake in seed (46.60 and 4.73 kg ha-1) and straw (22.58 and 2.55 kg ha-1), protein content (20.73%) and essential oil content (0.39%) of coriander were recorded with 500 ppm Thiourea spray, but was at par with 1000 ppm Triacontanol and significantly higher than water spray and 1.0 ppm Brassinolide spray. Significantly highest seed yield (1394 kg ha-1), straw yield (1991 kg ha-1), N and S uptake in seed (46.21 and 4.57 kg ha-1) and straw (21.40 and 2.46 kg ha-1) and protein content (20.54%) and essential oil (0.40%) were recorded up to 40 kg ha-1 application, which was higher as compared to control and 20 kg S ha-1. The results of this study suggestedthat foliar application of 500 ppm Thiourea twice at 45 at 80 DAS and soil applied sulphur at 40 kg S h-1 fetched significantly higher net returns as well as B: C ratioin coriander cultivation.

This study presents an analysis on the food diet of Batissa violacea - a threatened indigenous non-marine edible mollusk, in the largest river ecosystem in the Philippines. The B. violacea samples were collected along the Cagayan River using a dredging equipment locally known "Tako". A 240 samples out from collected 1,510 B. violacea were dissected and food organisms were estimated using gut analysis. The food diet of B. violacea is composed of 80-90% detritus and 10-20% food items such as green algae (35.83%), diatoms (33.13%), euglenophyceae (3.22%) and cryptophyceae (1.94%). These food items could be acquired by the bivalves through suspension feeding and deposit feeding. To ensure success in fishery development on breeding and production of B. violacea to replenish natural stocks in Cagayan River and in the prospect of venturing to aquaculture production of B. violacea in the future, sufficient supply of these identified food items must be ensured.

Heterosis has been a phenomenon of great interest for plant breeders and its utilization has led to the considerable yield improvement in crop plants. Fifty hybrids along with three checks raised in randomized block design with two replication in the experimental farm of Agriculture Research Farm Beechwal, Bikaner. The analysis of genetic divergence was carried out by using Mahalanobis D2 statistic. The grouping of genotypes in to clusters was made as per Tocher's methods. The 50 genotypes were - 383 - grouped together in to 10 clusters. Cluster I was the largest and consist of thirty seven genotypes followed by cluster II with four genotypes. Seven clusters contained only single genotypes. The maximum inter cluster distance (505.75) was recorded between cluster IV and cluster X. Likewise intra cluster distance (50.41) was highest for cluster X. The highest positive significant economic heterosis for seed yield (61.73%) was exhibited by the genotype 88004A? MRC HS-170-3-5-2-B-B-2-B-B-B-1 followed by 843-22A? MRC HS-130-2-2-1-B-B-1-B-B-B-B-1-B-B (49.66%).

Cabbage is one of the most important commercial cole vegetable in India. It is widely cultivated in temperate and tropical parts of India and abroad. It can withstand rough handlings as well as long distance transport and thus fetch better return in the market. Therefore, the present investigation was carried out at Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour during Rabi season of 2010-11 in Factorial Randomized Block Design for yield contributing characters in cabbage. The microbial inoculants M1 (Azospirillum) at nitrogen level of N3 (150 kg N/ha) i.e. M1N3 gave significantly highest head diameter (20.86 cm) and volume of head (23.15'00 ml). This treatment combination i.e. M1N3 also fetched significantly maximum net return of Rs. 162745.00/ ha with higher B:C ratio (4.31). However, it was statistically comparable to N4 200 kg/ ha along with M1 (Azospirillum) i.e. M1N4 fetching the net return of Rs. 15,71,89.00/ ha with B:C ratio of 4.09. The least B: C. ratio of 0.73 was registered at nitrogen level of N0 (0 kg N/ha) on the absence of microbial inoculant (M0) i.e. M0N0. Therefore, application of microbial inoculants basically Azospirillum as seedling treatment as well as soil application of nitrogen @ 150 kg/ha was the most effective treatment combination for enhancement of yield and profitability in cabbage cultivation.

The experiment on "Isolation and disease scoring of Colletotrichum lindemuthianum causing anthracnose disease in French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)" was carried out by planting Forty - 382 - frenchbean accessions. Two resistance genotypes viz., D-line, L-line and two susceptible varieties viz., Kanchana and Jwala were used for evaluation. Thirty days plants were inoculated with Colletotrichum lindemuthianum spore culture and disease scoring was done using 0-9 scale, 15 days after inoculation, genotypes were rated as highly resistant, resistant, moderately resistant, susceptible and highly susceptible based on disease severity. The genotypes EC500474, IC328848, EC530819, EC530886, EC500641, IC319370 and EC398483 showed highly resistance for the C. lindemuthianum pathogen under field conditions, along with the confirmed resistant lines D-line and L-line. The genotypes EC115962, EC540876, EC531078 and IC318852 showed high susceptibility for the pathogen along with the susceptible checks Kanchana and Jwala.

Four decades of cocoa research paved way for identification of potential clones and development of varieties suitable for different agro climatic conditions and tolerant to both biotic and abiotic stresses. The achievements are well recognised by International cocoa research communities especially in the Asia Pacific region which is mainly on coconut based cropping models. The challenges of management of genetic resources in the introduced environment coupled with long term breeding strategies resulted in positive achievements to take Indian cocoa to satisfy the requirement of chocolate industries. Supply of quality planting material of elite clones and hybrids encouraged cocoa cultivation in non traditional areas as well.

In the present study, the papaya seeds of cv. Pusa Dwarf were treated with different doses of gamma rays viz, 05, 10, 15 and 20 krad to observe the influence of treatment on fruit quality of papaya. The results revealed that 10 krad doses of gamma rays, had fruits with minimum central cavity(10.61&10.46 cm), maximum fruit length (23.14 & 24.60 cm), fruit girth (48.08 & 51.47 cm), fruit weight (1463.40 & 1669.78 gm) and pulp thickness (3.30 & 3.54 cm). The fruit attributes were effectively improved by seed treatment with gamma rays than untreated seeds (control), which had minimum fruit length, fruit girth, fruit weight and pulp thickness. The fruits obtained from the seeds treated with 10 krad gamma rays had significantly maximum TSS (12.98 & 13.12 °brix), sugar (10.92 & 11.18%), fat (0.17 & 0.18%), ash (0.75 & 0.77%), carbohydrate (10.94 & 11.13%), protein (0.64 & 0.66%), carotene (40.02 & 41.98 ug/100gm) and minimum moisture content (87.53 & 87.36%) during both the years of study.

Aiming at detecting possible potentials of Tibetan semiwild wheat in breeding programs, we have identified several Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) for seedling habit, grain color and cuticular wax that are related to stress resistance such as cold resistance, pre-harvest sprouting and drought resistance using recombinant inbred line population derived from a cross between Tibetan semi-wild wheat (Q1028) and Zhengmai 9023 (ZM9023). A total of 17 QTLs were detected. Four QTLs were detected for seedling habits on chromosomes 2A, 2B, 2D, 6B, explaining 4.64%-26.40% of phenotypic variance. Of these, QTLs on chromosomes, 2A, 2B and 2D were stable across two growing years. Two stable QTLs were detected for grain color on chromosomes, 3A and 3B explaining 7.59%-12.81% of phenotypic variance. Five QTLs for spike wax, detected on chromosomes, 1B (2 QTLs), 2B, 2D and 5A explained 6.53%-13.20% of phenotypic variance, while six QTLs for stem wax were detected on chromosomes, 1A, 2B, 2D, 4A, 6A and 6B explaining 5.59%21.03% of phenotypic variance. The QTLs identified in this study broadened our understanding on Tibetan semi-wild wheat and laid the foundation for their further utilization in breeding program in order to improve the cold resistance, pre-harvest sprouting and drought tolerance.

Two years studies on "the seasonal incidence of the major insect pests in maize with intercrops under marigold farmscaping" showed that the sap feeding insect pests like the aphids, jassids and whiteflies were observed from the first week of August until harvest. The mean atmospheric temperature indicated significant positive correlation with some of the insect pests of maize and the pulse intercrops during both years; while the mean relative humidity evinced a significant negative correlation with the whitefly population on pulse crops during 1st year; whereas, during 2nd year, the mean atmospheric temperature as well as the mean relative humidity showed a significant positive correlation with some of the insect pests. During the two successive crop seasons, significantly low insect pest populations were recorded under the marigold farmscaping treatment. The mean population of maize aphid was significantly more in maize sole (14.56 & 26.59), maize + cowpea (13.53 & 20.84) and maize + blackgram (12.74 & 25.80) without seed treatment; likewise, the mean populations of jassids, whitefly and legume aphid were significantly higher in maize + cowpea, maize + blackgram with and without seed treatment the coccinellid populations were significantly higher under marigold farmscaping during both the years.

Information on the extent of genetic variability and heritability for important quantitative traits is a requirement to obtain a suitable plant breeding material. Present study was undertaken to evaluate fifty six F3 lines of the cross NIAW 1415 X Parula for grain yield, its attributing traits and leaf rust resistance. To estimate the genetic parameters like GCV, PCV, h-2, GA and GAM, the F2 progenies were evaluated under normal as well as under artificial epiphytotic condition for all the nine quantitative characters. One of the ways in which the variability assessed is through the simplest approach of examining the variance component. The genetic variability studies in both the parents (NIAW 1415 and Parula) was found to be similar for most of the quantitative traits indicating, no much influence of rust pathogen on these traits. Whereas, the traits like SPS (Seeds Per Spike), TGW (1000 grain weight) and YP (Yield per plant) has recorded reduced level of expression with the respective values of 43.56, 35.45 (SPS), 30.25, 30.00 (TGW) and 25.45, 27.0 (YP) for respective parents indicating there is an influence of rust pathogen on yield contributing traits. Similar trend was recorded in F3- segregating population. High GCV (Genotypic Coefficient of Variation) and PCV(Phenotypic Coefficient of Variation) with the values of 21.20, 21.75 (GCV) and 28.57, 28.80 (PCV) were recorded for the traits such as PTP and YP respectively. This suggested the greater effectiveness of selection and improvement to be expected for these characters in future breeding programme. On the contrary, in protected experiment low GCV and PCV values were recorded for the traits such as, DFF (Days to Fifty percent Flowering), DM (Days to Maturity) and PH (Plant Height) indicating, less scope for selection as they are under the influence of environment. Interestingly some of the traits like PTP 9 productive tillers per Plant), SL (Spike Length), SKS (Spikelets per Spike) and YP (Yield per Plant) have recorded reduced level of GAM (Genetic Advance over Mean) in rust condition, hence the selection is not suitable for these traits in disease condition as they are effected by rust pathogen. Traits like PTP and YP recorded higher GAM hence, selection is desirable for these traits in protected condition.

Among the major causes of soil degradation in India, water erosion is considered to be the most severe one which covers almost 68.39% of the affected area resulting into the annual soil loss of about 5.3 billion tons through erosion. In the present study an attempt has been made to measure and model the water erosion to identify priority of micro-watersheds for watershed management planning of study area using the ArcGIS interface. Sub-watershed (5D1A5c) that catches water from main stream of Dediapada region (Dist.-Narmada, Gujarat) was selected for the study purpose. The sub-watershed covers 7 micro-watersheds i. e. d, e, f, g, h, j and k. Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) was used to estimate cell wise gross soil erosion of study area. The - 379 - parameters of RUSLE were estimated separately by adopting standard procedure. The erosion susceptibility map was derived using gross erosion rate and soil loss tolerance limit of the study area using standard formula. Two different approaches were adopted for prioritization of micro-watersheds. In an attempt to study the role of nitric oxide and iron sulphate on alleviating lime induced iron chlorosis in three genotypes, it was observed that iron deficiency reduced the plant growth and development. A field experiment was conducted at, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad during kharif 2014. The genotype GPBD-6 recorded higher number of leaves (273) and lower plant height (25.37) at all the stages. The combination of FeSO4 and SNP reduced leaf interveinal chlorosis, and increased the plant height, number of leaves, leaf area and reduced per cent chlorosis suggesting that nitric oxide action could be related to iron availability rather than iron sulphate to the plant. These results suggest that foliar application of nitric oxide and FeSO4 could alleviate iron deficiency induced chlorosis of groundnut plants growing on calcareous soil and helps to restore morphology.

Field experiment was conducted to study the effect of sowing date and nutrient - 378 - management in three genotypes of bread wheat under late sown irrigated condition during rabi 2014-15. Results revealed that, wheat genotype HD-3090 produced significantly higher grain yield (3628 kg ha-1) and straw yield (5152 kg ha-1) compared to the genotype NIAW-34 (2710 and 4142 kg ha-1, respectively). The higher yield was due to the significantly higher performance of yield parameters viz., panicle length (12.1cm), number of grains per panicle (56.0) and test weight (41.08g). The crop sown on December 15th recorded significantly higher grain yield (3260 kg ha-1) compared to December 30th sowing. The higher yield was due to the significantly higher performance of yield parameters viz., panicle length (11.0 cm), number of grains per panicle (52.0) and test weight (39.16 g). Fertilizer level of 125:93.75:62.5 kg N, P2O5 and K2O ha-1 recorded significantly higher grain yield (3111 kg ha-1) compared to 125:93.75:62.5 kg N, P2O5 and K2O ha-1. Higher interaction effect of wheat genotype HD 3090 sown on December 15th at fertilizer level of 125:93.75:62.5 kg N, P2O5 and K2O ha-1 recorded significantly higher grain yield (3983 kg ha-1), gross returns (Rs. 78773 ha-1), net returns (Rs. 55248 ha-1) and B:C (2.35) compared to other interactions.

More than 100 genes have been reported to impart resistance against rice blast, however, not all are equally effective. Their effectiveness relies on factors such as the diversity in pathogen races prevailing in a certain area, rate of pathogen evolution, genetic background of a host and few others. Pi54 is a major gene showing resistance to Magnaporthe populations in North-west Himalayas. In search of novel temperate donors suitable to high altitudes, a set of germplasm was screened using gene based markers for Pi54. Eighty three exotic and indigenous germplasm lines were genotyped using gene based markers and also validated for disease reaction using Pi54 gene specific isolate namely, Mo-nwi-kash-32. Nine out of 83 germplasm lines amplified resistance specific alleles with both the markers Pi54 MAS and Pikh-STS. All these lines expressed resistance against the said diagnostic isolate, thereby validating the possible presence of gene in the lines. Further validation using more number of isolates and sequence analysis will help in mining useful alleles for this gene.

The pheromones play an important role in animal behavior and reproductive processes. This review article aims to highlight the role of pheromones of farm animals. The pheromone signals are known to have a potential role in animal reproduction and management. The sources of chemosignals are urine, feces, vaginal secretions, saliva, and specialized scent glands including the odor produced from hair and wool. Pheromones can act as a marker to detect estrus where its detection is a problem and for diagnosing early pregnancy in farm animals. The potential implication of pheromones on improving sexual desire in male is also important. There is huge scope of application of pheromones once it is characterized and synthesized chemically.

Studies on seasonal abundance of S. parcesetosum and its predatory potential on whitefly in cotton were carried out in field and laboratory conditions. The peak activity of B. tabaci nymphs and S. parcesetosum larvae and adults were observed in cotton fields in mid growing season. Development duration of S. parcesetosum averaged 21.9 days and it was longest for pupa and shortest in first instar. The mean prey consumption increased with growth of the predator, being maximum in the fourth instar. On an average, a single S. parcesetosum larva consumed a mean of 560.2 nymphs of B. tabaci during its entire larval - 377 - period of 12.8 days. The predator was active for most part of the cotton season. Which indicated it to be a potential biological control agent for B. tabaci.

Identification of superior parental lines and their hybrid combinations for seed quality traits pave the way for enhancement of crop stand and yield per se. A line x tester analysis was carried out using GGE biplot to identify best combiners for seed quality and storability in 6 A and 9 R grain sorghum lines. ANOVA showed significant effects of lines, testers and their interactions for all the traits. L2 (296A) proved to be a poor combiner for all the traits both in fresh (FS) and aged seeds (AS), while L1 (2219A) was the best combiner for germination (G) and field emergence (FE) in FS, and L6 (IMS 9A) for seedling vigour index (SVI) of FS. 'Which-won-where' analysis proved that L1 (2219A) gave the best or near the best cross combination with all testers for G-FS, G-AS, FE-FS and FE-AS. L6 (IMS 9A) combined well with majority of testers for SVI-FS and SVI-AS. It was observed that the SCA effect of lines which come out in 'mean-versus-stability' analysis may not necessarily identify lines with SCA in favorable direction. Polygon view gives a better visualization of the heterotic pattern. T6 (C43) proved to be the best tester for G-FS and G-AS, and was near ideal tester for all other traits except for SVI-FS. For SVI-AS, T1 (CS 3541) proved to be better than T6 (C 43). Among all testers T3 (RS 29) was relatively less informative for being non-discriminatory or non-representative in most of the cases.

Chawki rearing is one of the vital activities in silkworm rearing, which enables the farmers to reap good harvest of quality cocoons. Conventional chawki rearing practice using nylon net widely exists among the tasar farmers for tasar chawki rearing. However, since, this practice involving higher cost, tasar farmer are could not afford to adopt chawki practice in tasar sericulture. - 376 - Hence, the study was examined with the objective of the access the performance of tasar silkworm under different viable chawki rearing methods which can easily adopt by tasar tribal farmers. The study revealed that the tasar silkworm larva grown under Jar method had performed better in respect to food habits and larval growth and development followed by the cage rearing method. However, when considering in large scale rearing of chawki silkworm Jar method is question. So, this jar method can be adopted in small scale, particularly, experimental purpose. Whereas, cage method for Tasar chawki rearing can be recommended who is practicing in large scale extensively.

A six parent diallel cross of pumpkin revealed contribution of both additive and non-additive gene action controlling the expression of yield and its components. The Combining ability study was carried out at Kittur Rani Channama College of Horticulture, Arabhavi, Karnataka, Epistasis was pronounced for all the characters. Among parents, KP-31 and KP-51 ranked as top general combiners for yield and its components. Higher yield was associated with increased number of fruits KP-51(0.30), average fruit weight KP-31(0.54), fruit length KP-51(2.03) and fruit diameter KP-31(4.21). Good specific combination involved high x low general combiners. Exploitation of heterosis appeared to be limited. Three crosses KP-31x KP-26, KP-17xArabhavi local and KP-51xArabhavi local were identified for developing high yielding genotypes of pumpkin with other desirable characters.

Water plays an important role in augmenting the growth and development of crop plants in their different stages of ontogeny. Since water is the life line for accruing desired yield levels, its time of application and method of application plays an important role in increasing the yield levels besides saving water. Further, water is the prime natural resource, which is often costly and limiting input particularly in arid and semi arid regions, hence needs judicious use to reap the maximum benefit from this limiting resource. Off late, among irrigation methods, drip irrigation is receiving better appreciation, acceptance, adaption and plays an important role in saving the water in water scarce areas. It enables the efficient use of limited water with higher water use efficiency. Optimum irrigation levels with suitable method would help in enhancing the economic yield as well as water use efficiency in many field crops including sunflower crop in line with the high value commercial and horticultural crops.

Nanoscience coupled with nanotechnology has emerged as possible cost-cutting measure to prodigal farming and environmental clean-up operations. Nanoscale science, engineering, and technology, which is more widely known using the novel term 'nanotechnology', is an emerging multidisciplinary field that can have enormous potential impact on our society. Nanofertilizers facilitate slow and steady release of nutrients and thereby reduce the loss of nutrients and enhance the nutrient use efficiency. The full recommended rate of conventional and nanofertilizer (FRR-CF+FRR-NF) enhanced the plant height, chlorophyll content, number of reproductive tillers, panicles, and spikelets in rice. The magnitudes of increase over the FRR-CF were 3.6%, 2.72%, 9.10%, 9.10%, and 15.42%, respectively. In rice, an exposure to Zn NP (at 0, 25, 50, 75, 100 & 150 mg L-1) caused significant changes in root and shoot length and mass (fresh and dry mass). The ZnO nanoparticles increased the shoot dry matter and leaf area indexes by 63.8% and 69.7% respectively in mineral poor soils. The effect of TiO2 Nano particles was significant on number of corn in plant, maize dry weight and corn yield in P≤0.05 in. Mean comparison showed that the highest number of corn in plant (10.10), maize dry weight (2396.35 kg ha-1) and corn yield (1744.13 kg ha-1) were achieved by flowering stage. Silver nanoparticles in 25 ppm concentration have showed significant improvement in maximum leaf area and highest grain yield while 75 ppm concentration resulted in decrease in grain yield in wheat. Maximum number of grains per spike was recorded with 25 ppm followed by 50 ppm whereas maximum 100-grain - 375 - weight was obtained for 25 and 125 ppm soil applied silver nanoparticles in wheat.

Current research evaluates a novel methodology in the production of the flour moth (Anagasta Kuehniella) by isolating the parasitoid Bracon hebetor and comparing production between the already employed production method (conventional) and the proposed one (experimental). Paper isolated the parasitoid Bracon hebetor from the production of Anagasta Kuehniella, with full efficiency from the attacks of the parasitoid Bracon hebetor, whereas the lots from the conventional treatment were attacked by the parasitoids. There was no significant difference in the production of adults and Anagasta Kuehniella eggs in all treatments. The two methods were efficient with regard to production and productivity. The proposed method is highly recommended due to its efficient isolation from the attacks of the parasitoid Bracon hebetor.

The study was conducted to analyse the abundance of thrips on vegetables plantation in the lowlands and the highlands region of Jambi. A survey was carried out in vegetables plantation of the region of Jambi. total 34 species of plants were surveyed and sampled on the highland as well as plants that are in the lowlands. Thrips from each study site were collected and then taken to the laboratory for identification. Thrips species were collected in 70% alcohol. Identification of thrips species was conducted in the laboratory of the Biology FKIP Jambi University. The study from highlands revealed 7 species of thrips of which four (4) species were of the suborder Terebrantia namely; Thrips parvispinus, Thrips palmi, Thrips hawaiiensis, Megalurothrips usitatus, and 3 (three) of sub order Tubulifera namely; Haplothrips sp., and species 1 and species 2. Identification results obtained from various locations in the lowlands survey found seven species of thrips; four - 374 - (4) species of the suborder Terebrantia namely; Thrips parvispinus, Thrips palmi, Thrips hawaiiensis, Megalurothrips usitatus, and 3 (three) of the suborder Tubulifera namely; Haplothrips sp., Species 1 and Species 2. Thrips were most commonly found in the plant family Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae. Thrips parvispinus was found most widely spread on all types of plants in the highlands and lowlands of Jambi.

A reproducible in vitro pollen germination medium (PGM) for cereal rye is reported here using tryptone for the first time. Rye pollen is very difficult to germinate on nutrient medium being trinucleate and is classified as recalcitrant pollen. This study addresses the possibility of testing the viability of rye pollen within short time (15-20 min) using pollen germination medium (PGM). The viability of rye pollen was tested with FDA staining also. The results of both staining and in vitro pollen germination were found comparable. In this study, tryptone, a nitrogen source was used in addition to essential sugar and inorganic salts. PGM used for rye consisted of 19% maltose, 13% poly ethylene glycol 6000, 62.5 mgl-1 boric acid, 50 mgl-1 tryptone and 1% agar. During the flowering period, a pollen sterility of 3-12% was recorded. The present investigation was carried out in the rabi season in different genotype of onion. The investigation was laid out in RBD with three replications. There were 8 genotypes wide variation was observed among the genotypes for all traits. Results revealed that the genotype cv. Pusa Madhavi (38.48 t/ha), Bhima Sakti (30.93 t/ha) and Bhima Kiran (30.16 t/ha) performed betterin terms of yield and yield attributing characters - 373 - and therefore, these lines may be used for breeding programme. The highest phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation were recorded on dry weight of bulb (25.04-20.18%), bulb yield per plot and yield per ha (23.31-17.74%) and bulb diameter (22.12-17.12%). Similarly, the high heritability and genetic advance were also recorded on Fresh weight of bulb (71.70-44.35%)and Dry weight of bulb (65.00-39.45%), being suggesting the major role of genetic constitution in the expression of the characters. dry weight of bulb had positive and highly significant correlation with yield per haand Bulb yield per plot both at phenotypic and genotypic level, respectively.

Samples of cultured Litopenaeus vannamei showing symptoms of Abdominal Segment Deformity Disease (ASDD) and simultaneously infected by Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) collected during the period 2013-2014 from culture ponds of Andhra Pradesh, India were subjected to histopathological, microbiological, molecular and Transmission Electron Microscopic (TEM) studies. Histopathological studies revealed changes such as excessive vacuolization in the gills, sloughing off epithelial layers in the gut, disintegration and lacunae formation in the muscle fibres, degeneration of hepatopancreatic tubules besides haemocytic infiltration into the inter tubular spaces. Spores of Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP) were found inside the B-cells of hepatopancreas. All the samples were found positive for EHP but IHHNV 50% only. Vibrio harveyi, V. alginolyticus and V. vulnificus were found as associated bacteria. TEM studies confirmed 20-25 nm virus like particles in gill and muscle tissue. This constitutes the first report from India for the mixed infection of ASDD and EHP in cultured L. vannamei.

Genetic diversity is indispensable to sustain genetic gain in breeding programmes. Present investigation in search of genetically diverse - 372 - clones was conducted in Randomized complete block design (RCBD) with two replications at Zonal Agriculture Research Station (ZARS), Vishweshwaraiah Canal Farm, Mandya, Karnataka, India. Based on Mahalanobis D2 statistic thirty five clones were grouped into eight clusters of which, cluster III was the largest followed by cluster V with 15 and 10 genotypes, respectively. Higher inter-cluster distance was noticed between cluster V and VII (21.439) indicating high genetic diversity among two clusters. Thus, exploitation of genotypes of these two clusters as parents for crossing could produce good segregants. Lower inter cluster distance between cluster II and IV (6.214) and intra cluster distance within cluster II (3.523) and I (3.742) was noticed to indicate the close relationship of genotypes within each of these clusters. Commercial cane sugar (CCS) yield (t/ha) followed by pol per cent juice and single cane weight contributed the highest whereas, CCS (%) contributed least towards the divergence. High cluster mean value for juice quality was exhibited by cluster VIII and IV whereas for cane yield and sugar yield, cluster VI was the best. It has been suggested that genotypes within these clusters could show greater potentiality for breeding purpose by virtue of their desirable characters.

The impact of untreated effluent from dye industries and domestic sewage that are discharged into the irrigation tank in Pandravedu village in South India was assessed through physico-chemical analysis of water samples and focus group discussion with the community. Thirty-six samples were collected from the study area across three seasons and analysed in the laboratory. The irrigation water quality indices computed indicated that the levels of sodium, salinity and hardness exceeded the permissible limits of irrigation standards. Consequently, rice yield had reduced by 40% in the region, thereby affecting the livelihood of the farmers. The colour of fishes in the tank also changed and their consumption contributed to health-related issues in the village.

The study was carried out to assess the genetic diversity in durum wheat genotypes under rainfed and irrigation conditions in dryland agricultural research institute (DARI) during the 2011-13 cropping seasons. Results of multivariate analysis revealed that the number of fertile spikes, number of grain per spike and days to physiological maturity were highly effective on grain yield under both conditions. A clustering analysis based on both agro-morphological and molecular characters indicated a good level of genetic diversity. Low correlation was found between the diversity obtained by markers and the agro-morphological traits. The Sardari genotype had the maximum genetic distance from other genotypes in the agro-morphological analysis. The average polymorphic percentage for inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) primers was 83.46%. Primers, IS6, IS25, IS14 and IS27 had the highest resolving power. Maximum genetic distance among the genotypes with the Jaccard similarity (0.314) was between G6 (19E-M84859) and G17 (19E-M142070). The findings would help selecting suitable genotypes for enhancing the yield of durum wheat.

Sorghum is an important crop of semi arid regions where it suffers from several biotic stresses. Among biotic stresses, charcoal rot/stalk rot is a major constraint for rabi (post rainy) sorghum production. Identification of stable resistant sources and incorporation of the genes or quantitative trait loci (QTL1) governing resistance are the prerequisite to make progress in breeding for charcoal rot resistance. A set of 242 sorghum minicore collection were phenotyped in sick plot of charcoal rot disease. A total of 31 polymorphic EST-SSR markers were developed and mapped through association analysis. The population structure analysis indicated the partitioning of the genetic population structure into four clusters. In the current study six new markers were identified for charcoal rot disease resistance (Xiabt 210, Xiabt 527, Xiabt 301, Xiabt 37, Xiabt 77, Xiabt 81) and was validated - 371 - previously identified flanking markers for charcoal rot disease QTLs (locus Xiabt 275) at RARS Vijayapura location. Six marker trait associations were stable at two locations and these significant associations are useful and suitable for marker assisted selection in charcoal rot disease resistance breeding programs.

The microbiota, the microbiological parameters of the soil cover, and its biological activity are first changed under the anthropogenic impact; so, many researchers consider them to be the most sensitive indicators of soil contamination.
