A new species Neoaleopsomyia budaensis Narendran sp. nov. gastral tergites distinctly reticulate dorsally but paraspiracular carina absent, posterior margin of propodeum without transverse carina and scape exceeding the level of vertex. Unlike Paragaleopsomyia Girault first tergite of Neogaleopsomyia is reticulate dorsally and SMV with two or more dorsal setae.

Corpus luteum and its role in pregnancy is known in several Indian bats; however circulating progesterone concentration has not been investigated in any Indian rhinolophid. These aspects in Hipposideros lankadiva - an annual breeder where corpus luteum persists through retarded embryonic development during semi-torpor in an unusually long gestation period of 260-270 days have been dealt with. The corpus luteum is maximally developed at the time of implantation with plasma progesterone concentration reading 40.9 ng/ml; the level declines during semi-torpor to 12.6 ng/ml coinciding with its decreased size and defunct appearance. At arousal from semi-torpor the corpus luteum appears slightly reactivated without any increase in its size (660 μm); however progesterone concentration again reads high, that is, 41.6 ng/ml. The corpus luteum regresses at the late limb-bud stage coinciding with the establishment of the chorioallantoic placenta which probably secretes progesterone (46.0 ng/ml) required for further maintenance of pregnancy. It is concluded that the extended life of the corpus luteum is related to semi-torpor, long gestation period and low metabolism and that the decreased progesterone concentration may be one of the prime causes for retarded embryonic development.

Fingerling stages of Labeo rohita were exposed to three different sublethal concentration (1.50, 1.65 and 2.15 x 10^-6 ppm) of mercury chloride for 140 days. During the experimental period, vertebral and caudal fin deformities were noticed in some fingerling's of the treated group. Decreased level of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium in the skeletal muscle system of the treated fingerlings indicates the greater accumulation of heavy metal in the skeletal systems. Deformed fingerlings the vertebrae shows a loss in the size and shape of the centrum and plenty of spaces also appear in the notochord due to demineralization of bone and this is mainly due to chronic exposure of mercury toxin.

The DNA damage in blood and liver of rats treated with carbontetrachloride and tannic acid on diethylnitrosamine induced hepatocarcinogenesis was studied using fluorimeter. Rats were divided into six groups of 30 rats each. Group 1 served as untreated controls. Group II A and II B received weekly intragastric intubation of diethylnitrosamine. Groups III B and IV received weekly oral dose of diethylnitrosamine, followed after 3 days interval with carbontetrachloride and tannic acid respectively. The results indicated that administration of carbontetrachloride following diethylnitrosamine increased strand breaks in blood and liver than when the compounds were given separately. The administration of tannic acid following diethylnitrosamine failed to induce appreciable DNA strand breaks in both blood and liver.

It takes place once, twice or thrice. Female starts laying eggs on the same day or a day after mating. The average pre-oviposition period has been recorded to be 1.45±0.080 das, oviposition period 2.1±0.171, fecundity 167.60±20.987 eggs/ female, incubation period 6.5±1.308 days, larval period 21.31 0.419 days, pre-pupal period 2.2±0.165 days, pupal period 12.45±1.731 days. Total developmental period has been observed to be 42.5±5.731 days, with 3.53±0.041 and 5.51±0.107 days of male and female longevity respectively.

The article reports the changes in growth, production and histology of Penaeus monodon infested with loose shell syndrome in modified extensive grow-out ponds. The carapace of the affected shrimp is papery in nature and the gill is brown in colour. The gill filament shows fouling by protozoa and muddy particles. Hepatopan-creas tissue reveals the absence of fat globules in its cells. Secondary infection of shrimp is caused by microbes and this fouling leads to the severity of the disease. In the loose shell-affected pond, the final average body weight of shrimps on 147 days of culture is 27.87 g, but in the case of the normal pond it is 31.29 g on the 140th day. The average daily growth rate of the loose shell-affected shrimp is 0.18 g and in the normal pond it is 0.22 g. The mean final survival rate of the loose shell-affected pond is 60.65% and in the normal pond it is 81.95%. The mean biomass production of the affected pond is 1058.97 kg/ha^-1, and in the normal pond it is 1915.21 kg ha_-1. The poor survival and biomass production in the loose shell-affected pond is due to cannibalistic behaviour of the shrimp during loose shell disease. There is also a derangement of parameters, especially salinity and temperature in the loose shell-affected pond.

Isolated scale melanophores of a hill stream fish Tor khudree were examined for their physiological and pharmacological responses. The effects of KCI, adrenaline and noradrenaline were observed on innervated and denervated melanophores. On the innervated melanophores KCI, adrenaline and nor-adrenaline and nor-adrenaline evoked aggeregatory responses. Denervated melanophores were refractory to KCI, while adrenaline and nor-adrenaline induced aggregation was potentiated and inhibited according to the concentration of the drugs. Phenylephrine, clonidine, isoprenaline, salbutamol, dobutamine, dopamine, 5-Hydroxytryptamine and histamine all induced aggregation in the melanophores of this fish. In most cases responses were not concentration-related. ATP and GABA could not evoke any clear-cut aggregation or dispersion in the fish melanophores. Acetylcholine induced a dual nature of response depending upon the concentration of the drug. It is indicated from the study that Tor khudree melanophores are innervated in a traditional manner of adrenergic type and the results with specific agonists suggests that both alpha 1 and alpha 2 adrenoceptors are present in this fish melanophores while the presence of beta adrenoceptors in this fish melanophores has no direct evidence.

In the study spread over two years (2002-2004) an attempt has been made to enumerate the density and distribution of zooplankton during three seasons in Sadatpur water. In all, 21 species of zooplankton of four groups such as protozoa, rotifers, cladocera and copepod have been undercounted. Of the 21 species of zooplankton, 7 species of protozoa, 7 species of rotifers, 4 species of cladocera and 3 species of copepod were recorded in various densities in summer, rainy and winter. In general, there is tendency of over all population; the density is in order such as rotifers (43.72%), protozoa (29.5%), cladocera (15.38%) and copepod (11.38%). Seasonal physico-chemical parameters of water such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, alkalinity (HCO₃ and CO₃), calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, hardnes, chloride and phosphate have been studied.

Various cytochemical techniques show keratinized nature of surface epithelial cells in elevated regions. These cells contain appreciable amount of cysteine bound sulphydryl groups (-SH), basic proteins, protein bound NH₂ groups and calcium and give strong Papanicolaou's reactions. Absence of cystine bound disulphide groups (-SS) probably suggests poorly bonded nature of keratine chains in comified layer in Sisor rabdophorus. In addition to keratinization, epithelial cells at elevated regions undergo mucogenesis synthesizing neutral glycoproteins. Possible role of tryptophan in keratinized surface epithelial cells that may be converted into NAD and NADP, in oxidation of cysteine bound sulphydryl (-SH) groups in disulphide bonds of cystine belonging to adjacent kertin chains has been suggested.

This is the second species of the genus and is named Stromaturus otolithii n.sp. This trematode is different from the previously reported type species in having posterior end pointed and seminal vesicle dorsal to acetabulum instead of anterior to acetabulum, genital opening is posterior to pharynx instead of ventrolateral to pharynx in addition to other variations.

Quantitative studies of the major microfauna from 19 gravity cores and 8 grab samples and semi-quantitative studies of 47 surficial sediments, collected between 191m and 2334 m water depths off Middle Andaman Island and around Barren Island shows a characteristic relation of the microfauna with the physiographic domains in the Andaman basin. Craggy domain of volcanic arc zone in Andaman Sea reveals a variation of pteropod preservation profile (PPP) in the seabed sediments. The PPP bears a direct relationship with the nature of sediment, quantity of pyroclastic materials and physiographic configuration of the region. The degree of preservation of the dissolution prone pteropods and its numerical abundance at various water depths in 27 surficial sediments are utilized to examine the PPP in the area. These parameter can be applied to examine and compare different pteropod preservation domains in other parts of Andaman Sea for oceanographic inferences.

Studies on seasonal influence on occurrence and population dynamics of entomophilic nematodes were carried out during the routine course of morphological and taxonomical investigations on nematode parasites of some economically important insect hosts. The data on entomophilic nematodes collected during different seasonal cycles through the years 2002-2004, infecting the beetles of family scarabaeidae has been given. Periodicities of occurence of parasites were found dependent on climatic variations such as temperature and humidity. The infection as well as population density were low during extreme temperatures and increase as the weather conditions become optimum, being highest during February to April. Whole data collected from all-round the seasoans of the years is presented in tabular form, analysed statistically, and represented graphically.

Histopathological alterations were observed in the fresh water fish Oreochromis mossambicus when exposed to 10% sublethal concentration of 96 hr LC₅₀ for a period of 7, 14 and 21 days. The rate of oxygen consumption was increased when fish exposed to the sublethal concentration of 10% cadmium for 7 days. However, a decline rate of oxygen consumption was recorded when they were exposed for prolonged period of 14 and 21 days. Histopathological changes such as fusion of the secondary lamellae, separation of the respiratory epithelium of the secondary lamellae, disintegration of gill lamellae and pycnotic nuclei were observed. In addition to above alterations, vacuolization, necrosis, empty blood vessels and oedematous changes were also observed in the gill of treated fish.

One-hundred-and-thirty-one hatchlings were successfully hatched in an average of 198 days. A positive correlation was noticed between egg size and hatchling size.

Mature specimens of Clarias batrachus were exposed to blue green algae containing environment for 115 days duration, over which the observations were recorded on 30th, 60th, 90th, 105th and finally 115th day. The fish were maintained unfed. An avrage increase of 4.2 <145> 0.35 cm in length and that of 5.2 <145> 0.39 gm. in weight were recorded and in the same period the liver was found to have lost its weight by 3259 <145> 8.1 mg. About half of exposed specimens died, during experiment, while remaining half were apparently sluggish. Control specimens gained 7.0 <145> 0.13 cm in length and 9.6 <145> 0.9 gm. in weight but their liver showed a decrease in their weight in a range of 3859 <145> 7.4 mg. About 15<37> fishes died and 85<37> inactive. The index was initially based on comparison of data obtained on 0 (zero) days.

Nematodes with direct life cycle were found to be most predominant helminth infection among these animals. Cestodes and trematodes were poorly represented as their occurrence is primarily determined by the presence of the invetebrate intermediate hosts in the locality of the final host.

Meganathan and David (1994) reported the occurrence of this genus in India by describing P. sairandhryensis. The study revealed the occurrence of P. myricae in Western Ghats of southern India on Wendlandia thrysoidea (Rutaceae). The details of this species and a key to the Indian species of Parabemisia are presented in the paper.

A new species of Scenocharops Uchida, S. sinui sp. nov. is described from Karnataka, India, the new species is parasitic on Rice leaf folder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenee). Scenocharops sinui sp. nov. is similar to S. namkumensis Gupta and Maheshwary but differs in the sculptures on frons, vertex, and mesoscutum, in having a median longitudinal carina on frons and larger malar space. The species Campoplex artonae Narendran is transferred to the genus Dusona and a new combination, Dusona artonae (Narendran) comb. nov. is proposed.

The study reveals that among the three families of Lepidoptera the family Pieridae is more rich than Paplionidae and Danidae.

Description on chromosomes of aphid belonging to genus Pyrolachnus and aphid belonging to species Hyalopterus atriplicies have been given. In P. pyre most stable number of chromosome is 8, however variations are also observed. Chromosomes vary in length from 5.1-7.8<109>. The genomic set constitutes one long, two medium and one small chromosome. The karyotypic analysis represents heterozygosity, since two bivalents are formed by unequal matching partners. In H. atriplicies, the majority of metaphase spreads represent 8 number of chromosome. The species exhibit cogeneric variation from earlier described only species H. pruni. Chromosome varies in length from 2.5-7.2<109>. In genomic set medium and short chromosomes are prevalently observed. The cospecies variation in chromosomal number is also observed.

Red beetle, Tricliona picea Jacoby a major plant pest is found to damage foliage of Terminalia arjuna Bedd. and T. tomentosa W & A which are primary tasar food plants of Antheraea mylilta D. (Lepidoptera : Saturniidae). Azadirachtin was evaluated for its insecticidal and antifeedant effects against adults of T. picea. Application of azadirachtin on T. arjuna leaves resulted in feeding inhibition and mortality in a dose-dependant manner. Mortality to the tune of 80<37> was observed when adults of T. picea were fed with 15 ppm azadirachtin treated leaves, whereas in control 13.33<37> mortality was recorded. Higher mortality rate in treated lots over control clearly indicate the combined effect of antifeedant and insecticidal properties of azadirachtin. It was also observed that the excretion of litter was minimum (0.189 g) in the treatment vis-a-vis control (0.944 g) after 120 hours of treatment, which reflects minimum feeding due to strong antifeedant property of azadirachtin. The outcome of the study could be utilized for devising eco-friendly control measures against.

Labeo rohita fingerlings were fed with three types of formulated diets (low, medium and high lipids) containing cod liver oil (CLO) supplemented with 0, 10, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mg of <97>-tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E) per kg of diet for 49 days. Vitamin E deficit fish exhibited lower feed conversion efficiency and loss of weight compared to other fish. Anorexia, muscle degradation, fin hemorrhages, skin discoloration and impaired erythropoieses were observed in liver and spleen. The vitamin E requirement of rohu was estimated to be 51,102 and 106 mg <97>-tocopheryl acetate/kg of diet at low, medium and high lipid diets respectively. In the study the recommended requirement of vitamin E was 50-106 mg/kg to prevent deficiency in L. rohita containing 7 -14<37> of cod liver oil in the diets.

Relationship between length and weight and condition factor (Kn) of Mastacembelus armatus (Lacepede) from Aligarh (U.P.) region was studied. The study revealed that the fish did not follow the cube law strictly, and the weight increase was at a rate more than the cube of its length in both juveniles and adults. A positive straight line correlation was found between these two variables. A significant difference was noticed in the value of 'b' among juveniles, males and females. The value obtained from covariance analysis for the difference between the slopes of regression lines for males and females suggested that separate equations are required for both the sexes. The length-weight relationship and relative condition factor showed that the growth of Mastacembelus armatus is satisfactory.

Siraswa river is a polluted waterbody of Himalayan origin. The soil of this river at the selected effluent point is sandy/loam. The pH was slightly alkaline with moderate phosphate concentration. Calcium and magnesium, sodium and potassium were in good amounts. The microbes were dominated by bacteria followed by the fungi and actinomycetes. The mortality data of fish were found to be related to the concentration of materials in water and the exposure period.

A study has been made to assess the reviving ability of cells of primary cultures treated with different percentage of serum and stored under refrigerated condition. The primary chicken embryo fibroblast cells can be stored up to 15 days at 4<144>C using 30<37> serum. The primary culture cells cannot be maintained continuously after certain period of time. Hence a storage of primary cells under refrigerated condition could be an alternative method of maintenance of primary cells. A virus replicates and produces cytopathic effect within 48-72 hrs was passaged 4-5 times using a one time stored CEF cells.

The effect of three pesticides namely Metacid-50 (Organophosphate), Dithane M-45 (Carbamate) and Kelthane (Organochlorine) were studied on changes in bimodal oxygen uptake of an obligate air breathing fish, Anabas testudineus (Bloch). The mean values of aquatic, aerial and total oxygen uptake of control group of fishes (40.0 <145> 1.5g) were recorded as 52.44, 61.56 and 114.0 cc/kg/h respectively. This group of fishes obtaiend 46<37> and 54<37> oxygen respectively from aquatic and aerial route. Exposure of fishes to above noted pesticides brought significant decrease both in aquatic and total oxygen uptake and significant increase in oxygen uptake through aerial route as compared to control. The reason for such changes has been discussed.

Paratelphusa spinigera belongs to class Crustacea and the family Potamonidae its body is covered by hard cuticle. Due to rigid exoskeleton and consequent discontinuous growth, crustaceans have been used to separate sexually mature from sexually immature animals and for studying sexual dimorphism among these animals. Relative growth in crustacean is usually described by isometric and allometric growth equations. Change or discontinuity in the relative growth curve has been reported at whcih maturity is reached. The study was initiated to investigate the general morphometrics and relative growth of the Paratelphusa spinigera. Several parameters have been studied including carapace width, propodus length, dactyl length and width of the chela in the male and with of the third and fourth segemnts of the abdomen for males and females respectively. All the relationships showed simple isometric growth, but the graph of the abdomen width of the female showed a distinct discontinuity. There is a significant difference between the relative growth of the propodus and dactyl length width of chela for males and females. The propodus of the males, are larger than the females. The `b' value for male and female propodus length is 1.364 and 1.073 respectively. Similarly dactyl length also is significantly more in male than the female, showing b=1.496 for male and b=1.498 in the male and b=1.138 for female.
