The life cycle duration varied between 38 to 57 days. The longevity of male and female was observed 2 to 4 and 5 to 8 days respectively.

(A.) bangalorica Lambert and Narendran sp. nov. can be distinguished from other species in having second metasomal tergite not petiolate and propodeum without close fine striations. R.(A.)indica Lambert and Narendran sp., nov. differs from other species in having temple smaller than eye in profile, second metasomal tergite without yellow marking at base and mesosoma and metasoma reddish-brown. R. (A.) rodialipa Lambert and Narendran sp. nov. can be distinguished in the presence of following combination of characters: median line of median groove of propodeum not distinct, temple distinctly shorter than eye in profile, absence of yellow mark on interantennal space and metasomal petiole with apical yellow band.

Twenty eight species of nine families of caddisflies (Trichoptera) were identified in 170 samples taken over on 8 month period from five emergence traps placed on a second-order, forested, cold stenothermal stream in the Narganj (Dumka), Jharkhand. A mean of 980.9 caddisflies of streambed was obtained over the entire sampling period. Eleven common spades accounted for 92.8<37> of the total mergence with specific proportions ranging from 23.8<37> (Wormaldia moesta) to 0.11<37> (Rhyacophila sp.). The use of various kinds of traps in other studies and their effects on the detection of species composition and abundance are discussed and compared with the present study. The emergence periods and patterns of the eleven common species are described and compared with other studies. Of these common species, one emerged in spring, seven during summer and three during late summer or early fall. Ten species had a short emergence period with a distinct peak and a significantly skewed pattern. One species, Parapsyche apicalis, exhibited a prolonged emergence period, no distinct peak and a significantly platykurtotic pattern. With the exception of Lepidostoma sp. A. The emergence patterns of the common species were unimodal.

Detailed comparative osteo-morphological study of vertebral column of two-snowtrout cyprinoid, fishes S. richardsonii (Gray) and S. plagiostomus (Heckel) has been provided. The S. richardsonii possess 48 vertebrae, qualitatively they are with 4 complex trunk vertebrae, 18 typical trunk vertebrae with ribs and 26 caudal vertebrae. While the S. plagiostomus have 49 vertebrae including 4 complex vertebrae, 19 typical trunk vertebrae having ribs with 26 caudal vertebrae. The caudal region of both Schizothorax species is supported by 2 epurals and 8 hypurals. The tripus of both fish species is slender and curved internally after its connection with weavirean ossicles.

Eighteen adult, clinically healthy, mongrel bitches were divied into 3 groups of 6 animals each and were subjected to ovariohysterectomy (OH) through 2 approaches viz., minilaparotomy (MLT) through rightflank without external skin sutures MLT through rightflank with skin sutures (modification of the former) and the conventional midventral laparotomy in the 3rd group. It was found that minimum complications, minimum time taken (18.33±0.988 minutes) and minimum cost (Rs.l04.98±3.455) for surgery was for MLT for OH without skin sutures. On the other hand the conventional midventral laparotomy for OH had maximum complications besides the longest duration of time (39.5±0.619 minutes) and maximum cost (Rs.230.22±17.208) for surgery.

Soil health degradation is one of the main reasons for loss of soil sustainability in arid region. The activities of soil fauna associated with litter decomposition play a vital role in maintaining the soil fertility. These fauna have direct and indirect effect on physical, chemical and biological properties of soil. Therefore, different groups of soil faunal community associated with litter decomposition were studied in various silvipasture fields of Western Rajasthan in summer season. A number of soil faunal groups (spider, mite, beetle, millipede, centipede, woodlouse, silverfish, termite, and other arthropods) were observed in these pedoecosystems. The densities of these faunal groups were divided as abundant, moderate and poor in comparison to each other. Biodiversity indices were determined for all faunal groups occurring in arid pedoecosystems. Differences in biodiversity indices reflected the effects of differences in litter food quality. This suggests that litter addition and decomposition in arid pedoecosystem induce activities of faunal resources for improving chemical and biological health of soil.

Bioassy studies of insecticides with reference to their toxicity were conducted in the laboratory with four granular insecticides viz; carbofuran, phorate, cartap hydrochloride and quinalphos as contact poison, to the adults of earthwarm Drawida willsi. The mortality was counted 24 hrs after treatment and then LC₅₀ values of each insecticide were calculated. The granular insecticide carbofuran was found to be most toxic followed by quinalphos recording LC₅₀ values of 0.6248 and 0.7290 respectively. With regards to phorate and cartap hydrochloride LC₅₀ was 1.4448 and 1.2023 respectively indicating safer to the earthworms at their recommended doses applied in rice fields against various insect pests.

On post-mortem examination of 400 abomasums from the slaughtered goats aged between 1-2 years collected from the largest slaughter house Bazaria, Kanpur during the period from July 2002 to February 2004, a total 16 (4%) goats were observed affected with H. contortus. Seasonal infection and severity of infection, both were found higher in rainy season in comparison to winter and summer seasons. But the number of worms counted as per abomasum was not found more that 10,000 to assess the severity of haemonchosis to be hyper acute form in any affected goat in any season.

Sesame leaf webber Antigastra catalaunasis D. is a serious pest attaching sesame. It feeds on tender foliage by webbing the top leaves, and bores into the pods and shoots. Control of the pest using pesticide cannot be recommended due to the concealed feeding behaviour of the insect as well as due to the fact that sesame is an oil-seed crop. Hence, eco-friendly pest management is recommended. Authors has studied the reproductive biology and sex communication of A. catalaunalis. Laboratory bioassay studies were done using the olfactometer and pheromone extraction chamber. It was found that the males produce sex pheromones. The pest can be managed by sex pheromones after isolation and chemical characterization. Thus, the use of chemical pesticides may be reduced.

The effluent of tanning industry contains heavy load of pollutants, like chromium, total sulphides etc. The effluent also contains high amounts of protein, which are biologically degradable and exert high biological oxygen demand (BOD). This leads to depletion of dissolved oxygen content, which is a threat to the life of aquatic animals. The continuous flow respirometer was used to measure the effect of tannery effluent on the respiration of Gambusia affinis and Poecilia reticulata. The results showed that the oxygen consumption was markedly decreased in the exposed group of both the larvivorous fishes.

Ten cows with retention of foetal membrane (RFM) and six cows delivering normally were included in the present investigation. Blood samples were subjected for estimation of certain haematological and biochemical constituents. The total leucocytic count as well as eosinophil, basophil and monocyte percentage did not vary significantly between cows with RFM and normal cows. Neutrophil count in RFM cases was significantly lower (P <60>0.01), whereas lymphocyte percent in RFM was significantly higher (P <60>0.01) than the values for normally delivered cows. The serum calcium, inorganic phosphorous, ALT and AST concentration in RFM cases did not differ significantly with normal parturient animals. On the contrary, the ALP activities were significantly higher (P <60>0.01) in cows with retained fetal membrane (35.38±1.69 IU/L) in comparison to normal cows (25.73±1.79IU/L).

Acid and alkaline phosphatases activity showed phasic changes in tissues of mud crab, Scylla tranquebarica to autotomy and bleeding stress. Being non-specific in action and in the selection of substrates their temporal changes suggest their role in meeting the energy demand. Their activities may also be attributed, besides energy derivation, to the mobilization of free nitrogenous substrates from the bound precursors and the maintenance of interior osmotic milieu in vivo. The overall changes in the tissues and the haemolymph in vivo represent preparatory events towards wound healing and regeneration involving both cellular and humoral factor.

Whiteflies colonizing on the mangrove plant Excoecaria agallocha have been reported for the time from India. Five species of whiteflies viz., Aleurocanthus martini David, Aleurocanthus rugosa Singh, Aleuroclava sp. indet., Aleurolobus marlatti (Quaintance) and Aleuroplatus alcocki (Peal) have been noticed to occur on the mangrove in Andhra Pradesh whereas only Aleuroplatus alcocki (Peal) was noticed in Tamil Nadu. A field identification key is provided for easy identification of mangrove whitefles.

Food production from the estuaries of India amounts to several thousand tonnes per annum. It is spread over throughout the year and continues even during the monsoon months. Along the East Coast of India, four estuaries, namely Hooghly, Rushikulya, Godavari and Vellar are the most important ones. Hooghly in West Bengal provides one of the richest grounds for fishery, while Rushikulya in Orissa is largely being used for the collection of prawn seeds and fries of milkfish for aquaculture. Godavari, in Andhra Pradesh, yields besides finfishes, about four thousand tonnes of prawns per year and in Vellar Estuary of Tamil Nadu, the total landing is quite high during the year. Along the West Coast of India, five estuarine areas are considered important for food production. Of these, Ashtamudiin Kerala yields quite substantial catches of finfishes, prawns, crabs and clams. Cochin Backwaters are well-known for their sustained food production throughout the year. It also provides paddy-cum-fish and prawn harvest. The backwaters end in Vembanad Lake where clam harvest is estimated at the rate of 334 kg/ha and several thousand tonnes of prawns are harvested from the lake annually. Kali Estuary of Karnataka largely forms the mainstay of fish and prawn harvest during the year, while Mandovi Zuariestuarine complex of Goa, on an average, yields about 200 tonnes of food annually. Rope culture of the green mussel in this estuary gives a very high yield and a fairly high rate of return on the investment.

Chratogonus trachypterus Blach. (Orthoptera: Acrididae) adults were reared at three experimental conditions A, B and C. The nutritional parameters like consumption index (C.I.), growth rate (G.R.), approximate digestibility (A.D.), efficiency with which the ingested and digested food is converted to body substance (ECl aria ECD) were computed at above-mentioned conditions. Observations indicated that A.D. was maximum under condition - A. where as the C.I. and G.R. were maximum under condition - B. The gross and net conversion efficiencies (E.C.I, and E.C.D.) were maximum under condition - B. The three parameters C.A.D., E.C.I, and E.C.D. were observed in each of the dietary constituents under each condition. The maximum value of these parameters in all dietary constituents was observed under condition - B. The value of C.A.D. for total and reducing sugars, protein, fat and nitrogen was directly proportional to adult life.

In Antheraea mylitta a pair of long, coiled, tubular male accessory sex glands (MASG) are extended into the abdominal cavity and open into the duplex ejaculatory ducts. The wall of the MASG is composed of a layer of columnar epithelial cells and the lumen is filled with secretory material in the newly emerged male moth. The histochemical studies revealed the presence of abundant quantity of DNA in the nuclei, RNA in the nuclei and cytoplasm suggesting active secretory activity soon after emergence of the adult male. The histochemical tests suggest that the secretory material accumulated in the cells and lumen of the MASG is a mixture of protein, carbohydrate and lipid. The biochemical analysis showed that the secretory material of MASG is composed of a large quantity of protein and a little amount of carbohydrate and lipid. The maximum level of DNA, RNA, protein, carbohydrate and lipid concentration in MASG was noticed in the newly emerged male moth which was reduced gradually in the old moths suggesting gradual reduction in the secretory activity of the MASG. The SDS-PAGE separated in-all 22 protein bands ranging from 19.17 to 205.000 in molecular weight. Topical application of JH- III on the newly emerged male moths caused significant increase while that of β-ecdysone showed reduction in the total protein concentration of MASG.

The investigation is an attempt to establish optimal culture conditions for in vitro fertilization (IVF) of goat oocytes. Ovaries were obtained from a slaughter house and, cumulus oocytes complexes (COCs) were washed three times in TL-HEPES medium and were matured for 24 h in TCM-199 (M-199) media supplemented with 10% fetal calf serum (FCS) and hormones (1 mg/ml 17β estradiol, E₂; 0.5 mg/ml ml follicle stimulating hormones (PSH) and 5.0 mg/ml leutinizing hormone, LH). After 24 hrs. of incubation oocytes were inseminated with percoll separated epididymal spermatozoa in Brackett and Oliphant (BO) or Talp-fertilization medium and treated with either Ca⁺⁺ ionophore (A-23187) (0.1, 0.2 and 0.5 mM/ml + SmM caffeine/L ) or heparin (0, 1, 10 and 100 mg/ml) + 5mM caffeine/L or heparin (0, 1, 10 and 100 mg/ml) alone in Talp-fertilization medium.

Synchronization of oestrus in Osmanabadi goats was carried out by using different hormones. The objective of the study was to evaluate mean time interval for exhibition of oestrus, duration of oestrus, conception rate and biochemical changes of serum total protein and serum cholesterol before and after treatment and in control groups. It was observed that the efficacy of PGF₂ alpha for synchronization was 50 percent by IM route, 75 percent by IVSM route. The efficacy of progesterone and PMSG was 60 percent. The conception rate 60.0, 66.7 and 50.0 percent in group I, II and III, respectively. Serum total protein did not show appreciable change in treatment and control groups both before and after treatment. However, the serum cholesterol level was found to be higher after injection in treatment group between 24 to 72 hrs.

Raphanus seedlings treated with brassinolide for 10 days were infected with root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) and its developmental studies (gall size, gall number and egg mass number) were carried out periodically. Likewise, the development of root system of brassinolide treated seedlings after infection of nematode was observed. It was observed that the growth of roots and development of M. incognita was enhanced when compared with untreated seedlings, thus suggesting a stimulatory effect on the development of Meloidogyne incognita.

Two new species viz. Epiclerus keralensis Narendran sp. nov and Foersterella areena Narendran sp. nov. are described and their comparison with related species are provided. E. keralensis differs from E. indica (Mani) in the size and shape of antennal segments, body colour, forewing venation and in the sculpture of mesoscutum. F. areena differs from F. anupama Narendran mainly in the nature of metasoma antennal segments and in having distinct frenum.
