Effects of petroleum crude oil and its water soluble fraction (WSF) on respiratory metabolism were studied in the fish Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch) for the period of 30 days. In sublethal concentration (1 mL/L for crude oil) and (2 mL/litre for WSF of crude oil), the O₂ consumption was gradually decreased in both the sexes with advancing days of exposure. The findings have been discussed in relation to metabolism of fish during stress.

Seasonal dynamics of mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi Kalt. and its parasitoid, Diaeretiella rapae (McIntosh) on cauliflower was studied for two consecutive cropping seasons (1997-98 & 1998-99) in the Vegetable Research Farm, M.A.U. Parbhani, Maharashtra (India). Aphid incidence started soon after transplanting and recorded peak in 5th & 6th standard week (240.0 & 328.4 aphid/sample) respectively. D. rapae followed up the pest after 1-2 weeks of its infestation. Parasitisation ranged from 2.40 to 97.39%. Highest parasitisation 97.39 & 94.61 % was noticed during 5th & 4th standard week respectively. A positive correlation was obtained with aphid population and temperature and parasitisation (Aphidius spp.); however relative humidity and rainfall indicated negative correlation.

The Indian major carp, Catla catla is exposed to low (8 mg/l) and high (64 mg/l) external concentrations of doxycycline for a period of 96h and its impact on the total carbohydrate and total protein levels of the major tissues viz., brain, liver, muscle and gill, was determined. The high and low concentrations were selected based on the recommended dosage per kg body weight of fish for treatment of different bacterial diseases. The results showed that there is a general decrease, which is highly varied, in the total carbohydrate and total protein contents of different tissues of the fish exposed to 96 h to low and high concentrations of the antibiotic. The decrease in the carbohydrate content is not significant in brain, muscle and gill at low concentration but is significant in liver even at low concentration and in all the tissues in high concentration. The decrease in protein content also showed variation. In the brain tissue the decrease in the protein level is not significant at both low and high concentrations and in liver at low concentration, whereas, in muscle and gill it is highly significant at both low and high concentrations and in liver only at high concentration.

Variations in the density, composition and diversity of the benthic macroinvertebrates were studied in the up and downstream sections of the impounded zones (Veerbhadra and Bhimgoda barrage) of the river Ganga in the foothills. In these sections differences in the benthic density were found to be insignificant (P<60>0.05). The sections differed in terms of composition and relative abundance of different taxa. The regulated stretch was found to harbour only Ephemerotera, Diptera, Trichoptera and Mollusca. Plecoterans were absent while Coleopterans were very rare in the regulated stretch as compared with the upstream pristine stretch studied earlier. The predominance of Heptageniidae and fragmented occurrence exhibited by other taxa are attributed to fluctuations in the flow regimes and loss of substrate diversity. The diversity of benthic community was lower in upstream sections being least in UVB (0.1348 - 1.1319). However, the differences were not significant. Similarity index indicated lack of similarity in the community at impounded locations.

Chronic toxicity of lead acetate was investigated with Parameaum caudatum, a fresh water ciliate protozoan. Paramecium caudatum was cultured in hay infusion and used for bio-asssay. The sub lethal concentrations tested ranged from 8mg/l-100mg/l. The test period was 144 hour. A significant reduction in the population growth rate occurred at all concentrations tested. Decrease in growth rate was in accordance with the increase in concentration and time of exposure. The possible causes for the growth rate inhibition have been discussed.

Lethal toxicity of cadmium chloride was investigated with Tetrahymena pyriformis (Ehrenberg), a fresh water holotrichous filter feeding ciliate protozoan, dilates were exposed over a range of concentrations from 2mg/-20mg/l. Instant death to Tetrahymena pyriformis occurred at a concentration of 20mg/l cadmium chloride. In higher concentration of 10mg/l the organisms initially exhibited marked increase in motility which rapidly dropped due to cell lysis with considerable alteration in morphology. In lower concentrations of 2mg/-4mg/l organisms remained normal in the beginning but with prolonged exposure they became cyst like with reduction in molity. Tetrahymena pyriformis was sensitive to cadmium chloride. Possible causes for the morphological changes observed have been discussed.

Length-weight relationship of Harpiosquilla harpax from Parangipettai waters was studied from 281 males and 268 females ranging in size from 100 to 234 mm and from 102 to 230 mm respectively. The equation obtained for the relationship was Loge W = -3.6479 + 2.3758 Loge X (for males), Loge W = -3.4826 + 2.3024 Loge X (for females) and Loge W = -3.5589 + 2.336 Loge X (pooled). The 'b' values found near to 3 indicated isometric growth and matched up with the cube law. The ANCOVA indicated not much variation between the 'b' values for males and females.

Female sex pheromone production in certain moth species have been shown to be regulated by a cephalic endocrine peptidic factor: pheromone biosynthesis activating neuropeptide (PBAN), having 33 amino acid residues. Antisera against synthetic Heliothis zea-PBAN were developed. Using these polyclonals, immunoreactivity was mapped in the nervous system of Achaea Janata. Three distinct groups of immunopositive secretory neurons were identified in the suboesophageal ganglion; and immunoreactivity was observed in the corpora cardiaca, thoracic and in the abdominal ganglia. From about 6000 brain sub-oesophageal ganglion complexes, the neuro-peptide was isolated; and purified sequentially by Sep-pak and reversed phase high performance liquid chromatographic methods. Identity of purified PBAN fraction was confirmed with polyclonal antibody by immunoblotting. Molecular mass of the isolated peptide was determined by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry, and was found to be 3900 Da, same as that of known H. zea-PBAN. Radiochemical bioassay confirmed the pheromonotropic effect of the isolated neuropeptide in this insect.

During the extensive survey of aphids and their natural enemies in northeast U.P. and Bihar, four species of Aphidini (Homoptera: Aphididae), viz., Hyalopterus pruni (Geoffroy), Hysteroneura setariae (Thomas), Melanaphis sacchari (Zehntner) and Schizaphis graminum (Rondani) were recorded on several species of crops and weeds. M. sacchari and S. graminum were found abundantly in most of the localities. Only M. sacchari and H. setariae were observed to be parasitised by four species of the parasitoids, Aphehnus gossypii Timberlake (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), Lysiphlebus delhiensis (Subba Rao & Sharma), Lysiphlebia mirzai Shuja-Uddin and Binodoxys indicus (Subba Rao & Sharma) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae). The extent of parasitism of M. sacchari by L. delhiensis and L. mirzai was very high in most of the localities in the target area.

The subpleural microvessel of the lung in the bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) was studied with the replica scanning electron microscopic method. The results showed that the microvessels of the lung arranged densely, branched and coursed regularly, of which the corrosion casts revealed a complex three-dimensional network completely. According to the microvascular architecture, the subpleural microvessel mainly comprised the arteriole, terminal arteriole, precapillary arteriole, and capillary. Sometimes, the terminal arteriole directly gave rise to large number of capillaries which anastomosed with each other, forming the subpleural capillary network. The network was loose, in which the diameter of the mesh was larger than that of the capillary, and the mesh was often hexagon and pentagon in appearance. There are obvious impressions of the smooth muscles on the surface of the casts of the arteriole, the terminal arteriole and the precapillary arteriole. On the surface of the casts of the precapillary arteriole and the capillary, there are obvious impressions of the endothelial nuclei as well.

Horizontal starch gel electrophoresis was used to analyse the genetic variation and relationship between the mud-flat crab of genus Helice and three other grapsid crabs, Chiromantes dehaani, Eriocheir japonica and Hemigrapsus penicillatus. Twenty five allozyme loci of 15 enzymes were investigated. The reaction of phosphoglucomutase (PGM) was found in those crabs except for E. japonica. Gene replacement was found at six loci, ALP*, FH-1*, G3PDH-1*, HK-1*, MPI-1*' and MPI-2*'. The average proportion of polymorphic loci and heterozygosity were 0.058 and 0.005 in Helice species, 0.091 and 0.023 in C. dehaani, 0.050 and 0.009 in E. japonica and 0.040 and 0.002 in H. penicillatus. Genetic analysis showed that Nei's genetic distance was 0.14196 between the genus Helice and H. penicillatus and 1.23512 between C. dehaani and E. japonica.

Neurosecretory cells of type A, and B were observed in the larval instars i.e- first instar to fifth instar, pupa and adults. The number, topography and distribution of neurosecretory cells were investigated during post embryonic development These were found to be variable along with the developmental stages. The neurosecretory cells were observed in brain, frontal ganglion, suboesophageal ganglion and in the various ganglia of the ventral nerve cord. These cells were found in various stages of activity having correlation with the development of the insect. The corpora cardiaca and corpora allata were morphologically and historically studied and the corpora allata were found to be neurohaemal organ in this insect. The structure of corpora allata was interestingly, found to be variable in shape, size number of lobes and secretory activity daring the postembryonic development of the insect.

Analgesic effects of morphine on the relative intensity and specific distributional pattern of AChE in the medulla oblongata (middle region) of morphine-administered brown dove, Streptopelia senegalensis were studied. It was noticed that AChE activity in the motor nuclear groups notably MVN, DVN, HP and LRN of the medulla oblongata of brown dove appears to be more pronounced being accompanied by marked accumulation of reaction product in their perikarya unlike control sets. However, in the untreated brown doves, AChE staining seems to be relatively less marked in MVN, DVN, HP and LRN whereas other nuclear groups such as NIO, SO and NRP displayed somewhat weak reaction. A possible functional significance of AChE activity in relation to specific distributional patterns among several nuclear groups of the medulla oblongata of brown dove as well as toxicity induced changes have been evaluated.

Qualitative and quantitative studies of zooplankton population in the Ithikkara river of Kerala during November 1995 to October 1996 were studied. Zooplankton composed of six species of Protozoans, thirteen species of Rotifers, fourteen species of Crustaceans (especially Cladocera, Copepoda and Ostracoda) and five groups of Meroplanktonic organisms mainly including nymph/larval forms of terrestrial insects. Their population dynamics were mainly influenced by sand mining. Among zooplankton, Crustaceans, particularly Copepods were the dominant group (33.92% to 78.66%) followed by Rotifers. Meroplanktonic organisms decreased from upstream to down stream regions.

Whether clinical white spots in shrimp appear only because of white spot disease (WSD) is a question needed to be asked in the light of new causes for development of white spots. The answer is 'no'. In fact white spots could be due to WSD caused by White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) or bacterial disease or high water pH. Most shrimp farmers rely on white spots in the exoskeleton of shrimp as the specific diagnosis for the most dreaded WSD and resort to emergency harvest without knowing the actual cause. Against this background, the mechanism and possibilities of formation of white spots in shrimp has been discussed, which would help farmers and the farming industry in understanding the white spots better and in proper decision making for emergency harvest.

Five disinfectants viz. paraformaldehyde, asiphore (alkyl phenoxy poly-glycol ether iodine compound), slaked lime (Calcium hydroxide), benzoic acid and bleaching powder (CaOCl₂) were tested on tasar silkworm, Antherea mylitta D. for assessing their comparative efficacy in controlling various diseases. The disinfectants were applied topically on the body of silkworms once each during I to IV instars and twice during V instar with a gap of six days between the two applications. All the disinfectants tested were found effective in suppressing diseases significantly (P<60>0.05). However, the treatment with Asiphore (1%) was found most effective in controlling not only diseases of tasar silkworm but also bringing qualitative improvement in cocoon.

Syndrome of unilateral ovarian regression was found in some induced bred, farm reared brood population of Labeo rohita. Both virgin and spent brood had the anomaly. One of the ovary lobes, (left or right) were found regressed and the counter part was normal. The G.S.I of the syndrome ovary varied between 0.91 to 6.50 over the normal range of 2.19 to 14.99 in different months from February to May. Weight ratio of regressed and normal lobe of the syndrome ovary was 5: 51 to 1: 16. The regressed lobe was thin, tubular, with very few oocytes. Most of the oocytes were found in different stages of atresia. Oogonia and primary oocytes showed perinuclear cytoplasmic shrinkage and yolk nuclear degeneration type of atresia, whereas yolky oocyte showed liquefaction of ovular content as the indication of pre ovulatory oocyte abortion and resorption.

Bromodiolone belonging to hydroxy coumarin family of anticoagulant is widely established as rodenticidal anticoagulent. Its anticoagulant properties have been proved by the clinical investigations. However, its effect over the electrolyte balance which is a critical factor for cells and tissues function is not yet studied. The effect of bromodiolone given as an oral bait to Bandicota bengalensis on its tissue Na⁺, K⁺ and Ca⁺⁺ ions was determined. The levels of Na⁺ showed a temporal fluctuation in the tissues. On the contrary, the K⁺ ions in the tissues decreased. The calcium ion invariably decreased in the liver indicating the lack of sufficient Ca⁺⁺ ions to promote the function of prothrombin in the blood coagulation. The results reveal that the changes in the Na⁺, K⁺ and Ca⁺⁺ ions reflect upon the general metabolism of the animal and infers loss of protein synthesis and physiological disturbance in the active transport of Na⁺⁺ ions.

Based on the crown morphology of the molar, it is assigned to Democricetodon sp. (Cricetodontinae). Since Democricetodon has never been reported from deposits older than early Micocene, the cricetid rodent yielding stratigraphic level (Basgo Formation) within the Ladakh Molasse is assigned an Early to Middle Miocene age.

The ovaries of 96 non-pregnant dromedary camels of unknown history were collected and examined grossly and histopathologically. The pathological changes observed included: paraovarian cyst (2.08%), follicular cyst (2.08%), haemorrhagic cyst (1.04%), intrafollicular haemorrhage (5.2%), ovarian hydrobursitis (1.04%), oophoritis (3.12%) and benign cystic teratoma or dermoid cyst (1.04%). Also, in this study serous cystadenoma was diagnosed in the ovary of a dromedary camel. This is the first reported case of ovarian serous cystadenoma. Additionally, on the basis of gross and histopathological characteristics, this study suggest and support two hypotheses including occurrence of ovarian hydrobursitis due to haemorrhage of atretic follicles and existence of a probable relationship between ovarian luteinised haemorrhagic cyst and cystic hyperplastic endometritis in the dromedary camel.

Mahi river (Mahi Sagar), one of the perennial rivers of Gujarat, flows around 12 km from Baroda. It receives treated and even raw industrial effluent from petroleum, petrochemicals, organo-chemical, dyes and other chemical industries. Aquatic pollution over the years has adversely affected the biota of Mahi river. Study reports crustacean community structure in the river. A total of thirty crustacean species were identified from the samples arid their seasonal occurrence and distribution was studied. The crustaceans were dominated by copepods and cladocearns. Highest density observed was that of Moina sp. at site I. Variations were noted in the distribution of crustaceans of different sites, however no significant effect of pollution could be identified.

The male : female ratio is 1 : 1.30. The pre-oviposition and oviposition period, fecundity and incubation period of eggs are : 2-5 (3.4±1.35) days, 3-7 (4.6±1.49) days, 54-225 (163.16±57.86) eggs/female and 4.5-6.0 (5.2±5.0) days, respectively.

In 1965 Drake & Ruhoff in their world catalogue, list 100 spp. belonging to 51 genera and the subfamilies from Indian region. At present this list, has risen to 128 spp. Belonging to 50 genera and two subfamilies from Indian region, affecting 138 spp. of plants, belonging to 42 genera and 20 families, as against a world record of 1820 spp. belonging to 236 genera and 3 subfamilies affecting 1040 spp. of host plants, belonging to 105 families. Most species are host specific. Polyphagous species are confined to annuals. More than 20 species are endemic to Tropical Rainforests of Western Ghats and all of them are monophagous. The natural enemies are both ectoparasites such as mites and a burgeoning list of predators and parasitoids.

Thirteen complete stomachs of adult one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius) were collected from the slaughterhouse. They were brought to the laboratory within two hours, cleaned, photographed and fixed in different fixatives for gross, light and electron microscopic studies. Fixation, processing and staining were carried out following standard histological procedures. Additionally, three embalmed, dissected and dried camels were studied and photographed. The stomach of the camel is multilocular compound. The rumen and the considerably reduced reticulum is one compartment (C1) and/are omasum (C2) and abomasum (C3) other two. It was found that all three compartments are glandular. Non-glandular regions were found only in the rumen part of C1. The peculiar cellulae (previously called water sacs) in the wall are arranged in rows in the dorsal and ventral sacs of the rumen. The gastric groove ventral lip is formed by the right longitudinal pillar, which bounds the ventral part of the dorsal cellulae. The left longitudinal groove and pillar are absent. Histologically, there is no lamina muscularis mucosa in the wall with the exception of the regions of the cellulae where there is a thin smooth muscle layer present. The omasum was found to have one type of lamellae (laminae) and is lined with simple columnar epithelium and contains simple straight tubular glands in its wall. The abomasum is very extensive and folded inside. The parietal cells were found to be much higher in number when compared to other cell types.

Mobilization of nutrients and energy for reproduction were studied in female Betta splendens as a function of body weight. The nutrient and energy contents in the somatic and gonadal tissues increased with increase in body weight of fish which suggests the deposition of nutrients in the body with the advent of the reproductive period. Low level of lipid in the somatic tissue and high level of lipid in the gonads indicate the mobilization of lipid from the somatic tissue to the gonads to provide nutrients for the development of eggs. The nutrients and energy resources were found to be conserved during pre-spawning period and then declined during the spawning period. Large sized female brooders, however, conserved more energy resources than small sized ones, but they did not exhibit any significant changes in the inorganic reserves when compared between pre-spawning and post-spawning periods.

The effect of vitamin supplementation by three doses each of Vitamin-C (VC;L-Ascorbic acid) and b-carotene (BC), used separately, has been gel electrophoretically studied with regard to amelioration of EMS-induced proteotoxicity in nine different tissues of Anabas testudineus at 72 hr after treatment, by comparing the data with that of controls EMS-induced proteotoxicity was indicated by way of protein damage in different tissues as revealed from the drastic reduction of band numbers and total protein contents in EMS treated fish. On the other hand each of the three doses of either VC or BC, when conjointly treated with EMS, appeared to show less drastic effects on protein band profiles of nine tissues, some tissue apparently showing differential ameliorative response. However, the minimum among the three doses apparently had as good or even greater protective potentials in some cases.

The comparative predatory efficiency of Acanthaspis pedestris Stal a major reduviid predator of many insect pests in South India was assessed on two cotton pests, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) and Spodoptera litura Fabricius. Gradual increase in prey consumption was recorded by the progression of the developmental stages of the predator. The adult female consumed more than the male. The consumption of predators was found to be decreased with the advancement of prey stages. First and second instar A. pedestris were limited in their ability to capture large sized prey in both the prey species. Among the two prey species, S. litura was the most preferred prey.

The Vattakayal backwater system of Kollam district in Kerala receives industrial effluents from the KMML Titanium dioxide factory. The plankton biomass from four different station of this water body was estimated every month for a period of two years (1994-1996). There was drastic reduction of plankton biomass at Station I which directly received the effluents. Station II which was near to Station I also recorded decreased values. Station III closer to the river discharge site and Station IV closer to the estuarine mouth to the sea exhibited almost normal values. The interrelationship of plankton biomass with year, station and season are discussed.

Aquatic ecosystems in agricultural areas are inadvertently dosed through the use of large number of agrochemicals including pesticides, which has direct or indirect effect on human health. So there is utter need to evaluate the genotoxic potential, if any, of such environmental pollutants. The genotoxic properties of carbaryl (l-napthyl-N-methyl-carbamate) or sevin® , an insecticide, employing micronucleus test (MNT) in the penpheral blood erythrocytes of Anabas testudineus have been reported. Different doses (50, 100 and 150 mg/kg) of carbaryl were injected intraperitoneally and specimens were sacrificed after 24, 48 and 72 hours. Peripheral blood (from caudal region) smear slides were prepared and stained with Giemsa (pH 7.0). Besides micronuclei the chemical also induced other nuclear and cytoplasmic anomalies. The results revealed the genotoxic potential of carbaryl.

Depletion of NH₄-N and PO₄-P was compared in pure and mixed culture/coexistence of Ceratophyllum demersum and Microcystis aeruginosa. The depletion of NH₄-N in mixed culture was more than in pure culture, while the depletion of PO₄-P was similar. Algal spp. numbers decreased in coexistence more than in the separation. Competition for N and P nutrients was not the primary influence leading to the decrease of algae, but due to the inhibitory allelopathic activity of C. demersum against M. aeruginosa. Allelochemicals in culture solution were analyzed with Solid phase extraction - high performance liquid chromatography (SPE-HPLC). The content of allelochemicals in coexistence culture was different than separate culture. In coexistence treatment, the presence of algae might stimulate the release of some potential allelochemicals from macrophytes to inhibit the growth of algae.

Length-weight relationship and condition factor (K) of freshwater catfish, Mystus cavasius (Hamilton-Buchanan) from Bhadra reservoir, Karnataka were studied on 200 specimens ranging from 11.7 cm to 22.6 cm in total length and 9.13 g to 76.98 g in weight, for 1 year from June 2004 to August 2005. The equation for length-weight relationship was W=0.0309 L^2.493 for male and W=0.0648L^2.7402 for female. The exponential value b significantly less than 3 (ideal isometric growth) indicating that the fish do not grow according to the isometric growth pattern. The coefficient correlation (r) was found to be 0.904 and 0.918 for male and female respectively which is positively significant. The higher values of K was observed during May, June and July reflecting the maturity of the fish. The length-weight relationship showed that the M. covasius(Hamilton-Buchanan) follow the allometric growth pattern.

Tilapia mossambica exposed to median lethal concentration of cadmium chloride for 120 hours to study the histopathological changes in the spleen and kidney. Distinct histopathological changes were observed in the spleen and kidney due to cadmium toxicity. Increased number of lymphocytes in the white pulp of spleen was observed. Kidney tubules were damaged and appearance of melano-macrophage centers in kidney and spleen were noticed. Cadmium chloride induced changes in the hematological profiles also. These histopathological changes were correlated with immunomodulatory or immunosuppressive role of heavy metal toxicity.

Acute toxicity tests (24. 48. 72 and 96hr) were conducted using static and renewable bioassay method to determine the lethal toxicity (LC₅₀) of a heavy metal compound chromium (VI) oxide to the freshwater fish, Mystus vittattus (Bloch) and to study its behavioural response during toxicity test. The safe level concentration was also determined The dose and dose-time dependent increases in mortality rate were observed in the fish in response to chromium (VI) oxide. Behavioural parameters under investigations showed prominent changes as erratic swimming activity, increase in opercular move-ment, jerk and violent reaction, loss of equilibrium, and aggressiveness in fish exposed to lethal concentration of chromium (VI) oxide. The prominent features of death were respiratory distress, paraly-sis and loss of equilibrium.
