A study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of capsular PCR typing in differentiating the serogroups / capsular groups of Pasteurella multocida . Totally twelve isolates were identified as Pasteurella multocida by species specific PCR assay. Out of the total isolates nine conventionally typed field isolates of Pasteurella multocida and three other untyped isolates along with the reference strain P52 were subjected to capsular PCR typing. Seven isolates were typed as serogroup A, four isolates and P52 vaccine strain as serogroup B, and one as untypable. The results correlated with conventional serotyping.

In the investigation it has been observed that in food content / crop if there is deficiency of Riboflavin then larval life span is negligible. It indicate that those crops in which there is lack of riboflabin vitamin, are naturlaly protected from H. armigera.

Species richness, density, biomass and herbivory of aboveground insects were studied in a grassland community of central Himalayan tarai region from April 1999 to March 2001. A total of 31 plant species were recorded in the grassland and mean aboveground net primary production was 2815 KJ m^-2 yr^-1. Fifty-nine insect species belonging 8 insect orders were recorded in the grassland. Most of these individuals were herbivores. The maximum density of insects was 7.4 m^-2 and the maximum biomass 1295 mg m^-2. The Shanon-Wiener diversity index H ranged from 1.32 to 1.44. Mean secondary net production due to herbivores was 47.9 KJ m^-2 yr^-1. Herbivores consumed an average of 12.8% of the above ground primary production.

Study was conducted with a cross sectional sample of 45 different mechanized boats. In addition to this 5 auctioneers, 5 wholesalers, 5 retailers and one co-operative society were selected as market functionaries involved in different channels of marketing. The mechanized boat owners grouped into three size groups as boats with single cylinder (Group - I) boats with double cylinder (Group - II) and boats with 1 cylinder and 6 cylinder (Group - III) on this basis marketing of prawns was studied. At overall level, total fish production throughout fishing season was 36,102.23 kg valued to Rs.24,96,093.77. Total fish production comprised 1,428.54 kg (3.96 %) white prawns valued to Rs.3,52,685.20 (k, 13%),2,350.95 kg (6.51 %), brown prawns valued to Rs.2,71,290.14 (10.87 %), 5,973.89 kg (16.55 %) Povalen prawns valued to Rs.3,59,105.89 (14.39), 16253.65 kg (45.02) tiny prawns valued to Rs.6,58,340.97 (26.37%),2,728.12 kg (7.56%) Kapshi prawns valued to Rs.3,09,692.14 (12.41 %) and 7,366.78 kg (20.40%) other fishes valued to Rs.5,44,979.44 (21.83%). Out of 45 fishermen 86.67 per cent fishermen sold their produce through auctioneer, 68.89 per cent through co-operative society, 68.89 per cent through retailer, 31.11 per cent through wholesaler and 24.44 per cent fishermen sold their catch direct to the consumer. It was found that all types of the prawns passed through the following prominent channels to reach the ultimate consumers.

Scapulae from 3 adult elephants collected from Kaziranga National Park, were studied and biometrical values recorded. It was well developed roughly triangular in shape. It had 2 surfaces, 3 borders and 3 angles. Scapular spine divided the lateral surface into 2 unequal fossae. The spine showed the uncinate process which was directed caudally. Subscapular fossa occupied the major portion of the costal surface that extended from the vertebral end to the glenoid cavity. The glenoid cavity was almost rectangular in shape. The coracoid process was also well developed.

Fish recruitment into Keoladeo National Park (KNP) with incoming water was examined for a period of three years - 2003 to 2005. In total, 24 species were recorded during the survey, Six species were recorded during the survey. Six species were recorded a new records to KNP, and five species as new to the state of Rajasthan. None of the species reported from KNP till date are Critically Endangered as per the IUCN Red List. The species new to the KNP are Cyprinus carpio communis, Brachydanio albolineatus, Danio dangila, Securicula gora, Clarias gariepinus and Mystus tengara, while those new to the Rajasthan state are Brachydanio albolineatus, Clarias gariepinus, danio dangila, Mystus tengara and Securicula gora. The investigation has increased the number of fish species known from KNP to 58 belonging to 15 families and 39 genera. This revised list as a result of both loss and addition in number of species in KNP draws attention for a thorough review on the prevailing anthropogenic pressures in the catchment.

An attempt was made to study the femur of three adult rhinoceros. The femur was the most massive of all the long bones and comprised of a shaft arid two extremities. The head was well developed facing upward arid the well developed trochanter major was at a level lower than the head. The fovea capitis was wide and deep. Presence of a rough ridge at the proximal half the medial surface separated this from the caudal. The trochlear groove in between the two epicondyles was wide and deep which lodged the massive patella. A distinct sulcus was present on the distal part of the medial ridge of the trochlea.

Statistical analysis of growth pattern and meristic studies of body parts of the banded estuarine prawn, Macrobrachium sulcatus (Henderson & Matthai) of Vembanad Lake, Kerala State is reported. The results showed that the growth pattern of carapace length, abdominal length, body length, propodus length and dactylus length in relation to total length were significantly different between the sexes at slope itself (at 1% level) and that of merus length at 5% level. Growth pattern of ischium and palm were significant at elevations (5%, 1% levels respectively). The average sizes of all these characters were greater in males than in females. Regression equations have been calculated for the characters and presented in the text. Among the characters of the carapace, only the post-orbital length showed significant difference between sexes, at 5 % level (slope value) (Table 1). The average sizes of all these characters were higher in males. Among the meristic characters studied in the species exhibited sexual dimorphism only with regard to the ventral teeth. The fundamental data generated is essential for establishing the species status as well as it is useful for making comparison with other species.

Population status, structure, abundance and trend of plains zebra (Equus quagga) were studied in Nechisar plains, Nechisar National Park, southern Ethiopia, using transects and silent detection methods. The population of plains zebra in the area was estimated at 4500, with the population density of 16.6 km^-2. The average herd sizes of one-male harem and bachelor stallion herds were 10.8 and 6.4, respectively. Adult males constituted 34.8%, adult females 41.5% and unsexed young 23.7%. Male:female ratio was 1.00:1.19. The age structure was 76.3% adult, 14.7% subadult, 5.2% juvenile and 3.8% foal. There was a rapid increase in their population during 1970-1985 and then a decline over the period 1991-1995. An integrated action involving implementation of effective awareness programme among the local people and improving the socio-economic standards of the communities in the Nechisar plains is essential for the management of the plains zebra in Nechisar National Park.

Amphibians are important to the overall ecosystem balance. The large biomass of these amphibians makes them significant prey for other animals. Currently amphibian populations are declining in a number of geographical locations throughout the world including Pakistan. In most cases, the cause or causes are unknown, but are assumed to result from manmade alterations in the environment. In this study, Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis was exposed to two selected pesticides; cypermethrin, and endosulfan in the laboratory experiments. Two different concentrations i.e. 1and 0.5% of both pesticides were used, and cholinesterase activity was observed in the brain, liver and kidney of E. cyanophlyctis. Under the treatment of cypermethrin, it was decreased upto 45.32 and 26.44% in the brain and 38.00 and 22.60% in the liver and 40.25 and 38.87% in the kidney, respectively. While under the effect of endosulfan, it was decreased upto 20.06 and 2.24% in the brain and 9.03 and 5.56 in the liver and 17.72% and 16.77%in the kidney, respectivey.

Mallophaga (biting lice) are ectoparasites of domestic birds including hens, roosters and ducks. They feed on feathers and skin of birds and cause damage in them including shortage of longevity, decreasing the egg production and causing infectious diseases. Mallophaga were studied among domestic birds in the traditional poultry houses from Ahwaz region, south west of Iran. In this project 40 birds were detected to collect the biting lice from the birds in the poultry houses which located in the different geographical positions of Ahvaz. In total 1200 lice were collected and identified using Allen Walker and Stonjanvich keys and light microscope. All of the collected specimens were recognized as Mallophaga order, Ambelycera sub-order. The collected specimens were determined as Menacanthus stramineus sp. and Menopon sp. from hens and roosters and Menacanthus stramineus from ducks.

Seventy five species of butterflies belonging to 48 genera and five families were documented from different forest types and watershed in the Great Himalayan Conservation Landscape area of Himachal Pradesh. The butterfly composition (richness and diversity) was significantly higher in broad leaved forest compared to other forested habitats. Sub-alpine habitat had the most dissimilar butterfly species. The richness pattern also showed a positive trend with an increase in altitudinal gradient.

In this study, endoparasites of the Rana ridibunda specimens collected from Dalaman area, southwestern Turkey were investigated. In the intestine of 17 specimens of R. ridibunda, five different parasites, represented by three species of the trematoda (Diplodiscus sp, Pleurogenoides sp, Plagiorchis sp) and two genera of round worms species are observed in the cavity*.

Oysters, Crassostrea cattuckensis were exposed to sublethal levels of cadmium for 15 and 30 days for metal accumulation and 15 days of metal detoxification. In metal exposed oysters to 0.10 and 0.38ppm concentrations there was increased protein content significantly in all body parts. But certain exceptions were seen like decrease in protein of gill (24.22), gonad (21.12) and siphon (29.39) in 0.38 concentrations on 15 days exposure. The increased rate upon 15 days in 0.10ppm concentrations was from mantle (42.83), followed by hepatopancreas (34.22), gill (36.11), gonad (29.22), adductor muscle (34.91), and siphon (32.49). While in 0.38 the protein was from hepatopancreas (35.68), than mantle (35.77), gonad (21.12), gill (24.22), adductor muscle (35.42) and siphon (29.39). During detoxification process the protein content decreased in all body parts.

Studies on consumption of Corcyra cephalonica Stainton and Clostera fulgurite Walker by Canthecona furcellata Wolff under different temperature regimes viz., 22°C, 27°C, 32°C and 37°C revealed that the maximum average predation on C. cephalonica was observed at 27°C (9.50%) followed by 37°C (7.37%), 32°C (7.13%) and 22°C (2.75%) while in case of C. fulgurita the maximum average predation was at 32°C (24.39%) followed by 27°C (23.60%), 22°C (13.78%) and 37°C (13.06%).

Worm was procured from small intestine of desimyna, Acridotheres tristis (Linn.) at Raksa, district Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, India. After morphological study of worm it is conclused that present species differs from all known species of genus Ophryocotylus in shape of ovary, distribution of testes and in other characters, thus established as a new species.

New caryophyllid Pseudobeanata n.g. and its type species, Pseudobeanata paleraensis n.g., n.sp. has been described from the fresh water cat fish, Clarius batrachus from district Tikamgrah, Madhya Pradesh. The present form differs from all the known genera of the family capingentidae in the shape of ovary and other characters.

Feeding habits of skipjack tuna associated with flotsam and those from free schools were studied based on data collected from the pole and line fishery from Minicoy during 1999-2001. The flotsam were found in different months but was more frequent during Sept. to Nov. A preponderance of smaller size groups below 40 cm (48%) was seen around flotsam whereas in free schools size groups above 50 cm (65%) dominated. Stomach contents of 828 individuals were analysed. In flotsam associated skipjack, stomachs were found to be either empty or with natural prey. Caridian shrimps were found to be the main food in all size groups and were actively fed. The average ration per 1000 g body weight ranged between 17.3 and 39.4 ml suggesting that the flotsam have a function related to feeding rather than refuge.

Club cells are observed in the epidermis of Clupisoma garua in present investigations. These are voluminous and beinucleated. Their secretory contents stain strongly for different classes of proteins. In addition, the club cells of Clupisoma garua display very strong reactions for glycoproteins. Club cells have been associated playing significant role in providing protection to the fish in various ways.

The catfish, H. fossilis were exposed to endosulfan for 30 days at sub-lethal concentration (0.002ppm) during different phases of its annual reproductive cycle. Its impact on total (TP) and different phospholipids- phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatdylinositol (PI) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) were measured in liver , plasma and ovary. On pesticide exposure, during perpartory phase, the hepatic TP, PC and PE were declined. The plasma levles of TP, PC, and PS were declined with the elevation of PE whereas in ovary PC was lowered after endsulfan exposure. During pre-spawing phase, the hepatic TP, PC and PE declined in liver, plasma and ovary after endosulfan exposure. During spawning phase, only plasma and ovarian phospholipids showed decreases in their levels following endosulfan exposure. In the post-spawning phase, endosulfan elevated the levels of TP, PC and PS in ovary but had had no effect on their levels and plasma. During resting phase, the TP, PC and Pl were found to be decreasing its levels. Thus it appears that this pesticide interfere with phospholipids metabolism during annual reproductive cycle of this species.

Histopathological effects of sublethal dose of heavy metal, cadmium have been studied on the mucous cells in the gills of peppered loach, Lepidocephalichthys guntea. Laying down of slimy coat by the mucous cells of gills following exposure to cadmium chloride has been correlated to delay penetration of the heavy metal atleast in initial stage of exposure. Elaboration of glycoproteins by the mucous cells has been associated to trap the heavy metal ions. Mucous secreted by the mucous cells has detoxifying action against ambient toxins.

Effect of lethal concentration (LC₅₀ 96h, 0.444mg/l) of malachite green on sensory structures-taste buds and ampullary organs in the epidermis of a cat fish, Mystus vittatus was studied. Taste buds present in the epidermis of Mystus vittatus have been correlated to accurate localization of prey and trigger of a pick up reflex. Their presence has been considered as an adaptation to the restrict visibility in the column of the water bodies in which they inhabit. Presence of glycoproteins in taste buds indicates a secretory functions of the taste buds and has been postulated to maintain and regulate the chemical micro environment, to protect mucous or other glycoproteins in the taste bud cells and inside taste pore from premature enzymatic degradation and to have hormone like paraneuronal functions. Closing of taste pore, disintegration of taste hairs and cellular components of taste buds and decline in glycoprotein moieties during different exposures of malachite green has been associated with great 'reduction in the ability of the fish to sense the chemical nature of surrounding water and food available in a particular feeding zone. The presence of ampullary organs in the epidermis of Mystus vittatus suggest that they play a significant role in complementing the taste buds in location of prey in this predatory cat fish.

Oral administration of Malvaciscus conzatti Greenm (leaves) alcoholic extract @ 25 mg/l00g body weight for consecutive 10, 20 and 30 days caused wide spread testicular changes. A general tendency of hemorrhage in interstitial space was observed. After 10 days of extract feeding defragmentation of nuclei was observed at primary spermatocyte, secondary spermatocyte and spermatid stages. After 30 days of treatment due to destruction of germinal components lumen and tubules were almost empty. Vacuoles were also visible. Sertoli cells appeared unaffected.

Random survey was conducted in the fields of district Kangra (H.P.) to assess nematode associations and their distribution. A total of 50 soil samples were collected from four Tehsils (palampur, Kangra, Baijnath and Jaisinghpur) of Kangra District; only 34 soil samples were having nematodes. Two different localities were searched out in each Tehsil respectively. The localities surveyed in Tehsil Palampur were Bhattu Sa mula and Rani Sidhpur, in Tehsil Kangra were Tanda and Hatwas, in Tehsil Baijnath were Taragarh and Jhikley Beth and in Tehsil Jaisinghpur were Bairghat and Bal Bhuriyan. The nematode population was rich around the root zone of Calocasia antiquorum in Bhattu Samula (palampur) Taragarh (Baijnath), Bairghat and Bal Bhuriyan (Jaisinghpur) and Zingiber officinale in Rani Sidhpur respectively. It was observed that in case of Hatwas (Kangra), the sampled rhizosphere of Lycopersicon esculentum and Momordica charantia showed very poor nematode population. Bairghat (Jaisinghpur) area was quite rich in respect of nematode infestations in Zingiber officinale, Hibiscus esulentus and Capsicumfrutescens also. Moderate nematode population was observed around the rood zone of Cucurbita maxima in Tanda (Kangra) and Jhikley Beth (Baijnath) and Hibiscus esulentus in Rani Sidhpur (Palampur) respectively.
