Variation in temperature significantly (P <60> 0.05) influenced total DNA content of silk glands of multivoltine race of Bombyx mori while RNA content was not changed considerably. The maximum level of DNA (0.046 μg/mg) and RNA (0.075 μg/mg) were found at 26±1°C, while the minimum 0.029 μ g/mg DNA and 0.059, μ g/mg RNA values were recorded at 10±1°C. It appears that in the last phase of fifth instar when the silk glands are ready to synthesise the silk fibre, variation in temperature alters DNA and RNA contents in the silk glands of B. mori.

Detailed histoenzymological mapping of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the mesencephalon of Hemidactylus flaviviridis, by employing a modified histochemical technique to visualize AChE containg neurons described by Hedreen et al. (1985), has been done. Mesencephalon in the present H. flaviviridis has been divided in to dorsal optic tectum and ventral tegmentum. In the tectum region the six strata exhibited mild to intense degree of reaction for AChE. In contrast, most of the nuclei of tegmentum demonstrated intense reaction for AChE. Substantia nigra and nucleus mesencephalicus trigemini, however, revealed mild activity. The functional significance of the enzyme has been discussed in relation to its variable distribution in the different nuclei of the mesencephalon of the present H. flaviviridis.

The order of decrease in the haematological components of the three fish is in the order of Catla catla <62> Labeo rohita <128><62> Cirrhinus mrigala.

Nilgiri tahr, Hemitragus hylocrius Ogilby, is an endangered mountain goat distributed in southern Western Ghats of Peninsular India. Monitoring tahr habitats and selection of sites for management interventions and reintroduction of the tahr in their natural environment require an understanding of habitat suitability and hence this study was undertaken. The estimated tahr population in Kerala was around 1,000 individuals on 11 sites. The Eravikulam National Park (ENP) was chosen for developing the Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) model since it has the sole viable population of about 700 individuals. Based on the habitat utilization, the ENP was divided into different blocks. The relational trends between block-wise tahr density and the critical habitat variables viz., altitude, extent of cliff and availability of principal food species were examined through correlation analysis for evolving habitat suitability criteria. This formed the basis for deriving suitability indices, ranging from 0 to 1, which were subsequently used for developing the HSI models. In order to find out how well the HSI models captured variation in tahr density, they were subjected to regression analysis. The analyses indicate that the HSI models were satisfactory considering the limited number of factors involved. However, the models should be evaluated in other habitat conditions especially in fragmented habitats considering their degradation factors such as human disturbance, grazing pressure.

Diversity and abundance of avifauna in the Thar Desert, Rajasthan, were studied during May 2000 to May 2003. Line transect and total count method was used to count the birds. A total of 272 species of birds, belonging to 17 Orders and 55 Families were recorded. Out of these, 223 species were resident and 49 migrants. Species richness was highest in the month of January followed by February. The highest bird species abundance was observed in February and the lowest in July. The Common Coot was highest in dominance followed by Blue Rock Pigeon and Eurasian Collard Dove. Diversity was highest in the month of May and October. Fourteen species of threatened bird species were recorded during the study. The species richness, abundance and diversity of birds in the Thar Desert are comparable with the other ecosystems in India.

Trioz hirsuta Crawford (Homoptera: Psyllidae) is a gallinauous insect pest of economically important tree Termina/ia tomentosa. Extensive development of galls on the leaves causes deformities and damages the foliage. Female psyllid oviposits the eggs singly on the ventral side of the leaf on either side of the midrib and side veins. A pre oviposition period after copulation varied from 2.55 to 45.50 h with an average of 7.00 h prior to egg laying. Before ovipoistion, the gravid female choose suitable spot for oviposition with the help of antennal and proboscis tip having sensory setae. Before, oviposition, the female looks restless and move here and there. At the time of oviposition, the female firmly hold the substratum with claw and lowers the genital part, then inter valvular space widen, egg starts coming out at the same time the female exudes a secretion from its accessory glands which gets hard after exposure to air and the egg is glued to the substratum. Eggs are laid singly. Rarely 2 to 6 eggs were also laid together. The female moves quickly forward to select another spot for oviposition after laying an egg or egg batch; 35 to 85 min, with an average of 57.41 min are required for the entire process of oviposition. Generally, 36-70 eggs with an average of 49.9 eggs are laid by an oviposition female during one oviposition period. Once mated female T.hirsuta laid two batches of eggs and then did not lay eggs during rest period of life. However, multi times copulated female laid eggs throughout life, though the fecundity of oviposition decreased with the age of the female. The variation in fecunditY of eggs depends upon climate factors, food supply and age of female. A female lays 48-180 eggs during her life span with an average of 98.6 eggs. Maximum eggs were laid by 2 to 5 days with an average 3.5 days old female. However during last one or two days of her life female did not laid any eggs.

Treatments with nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) results in the reduction of the genotoxic damage. A significant decrease was observed at all the tested doses of NDGA in sister chromatic exchanges of number of abnormal cells. The results suggest a protective role of NDGA against the genotoxic damage.

The condition of the fish including condition factor (K) and somatic condition factor (Ks) was determined based on weight of the body, length of the fish and gonad weight. In control fish the condition of the fish improve during prespawning phase compared to other phases. The hormone cortisol level estimated by radioimmunoassay (RIA) technique was found to be increased in preparatory and decreased during prespawning phase, may be because of the hormone involvement in metabolic activity, vitellogenesis. In cortisol treatment, the condition of the fish decrease during prespawning phase, compared to other phase may be because of extra expenditure of energy for progressing reproductive activity such as vitellogenesis.

Morphological differences were reported in their valves, natatory satae, furca and body size.There was no male population in case of Hemicypris dissonus, Chrissia humilis and Candonopsis species. Whereas in case of Hemicypris anomala females were absent. Breeding occurred in the month of April and May.

Histopathological alterations in the liver of Clarias batrachus infected with Procamallanus were recorded on day 15, 30, 45 and 60. Liver of the catfish revealed infiltration of lymphocytes around hepatic portal tract and mild dilation in central vein on day 15 of infection. A distinct necrotic zone was fairly common around the central vein and the hepatocytes revealed mild degenerative changes. The hepatocytes exhibited pyknosis and karyolysis whereas edema and cloudy swelling were more pronounced. On 30 day post-infection, the pathological changes were more pronounced as evident by cloudy swelling, edema, infiltration of RBCs, atrophied nuclei, fibrotic layer around the central vein, dilation in central vein and focal collection of lymphocytes. Hepatocytes of the catfish depicted necrosis such as pyknosis, karyolysis and karyorhexis on day 45 of the infection. Edema was more pronounced between sinusoids and portal tract revealed marked degenerative changes with necrotic as well as chronic inflammatory cells around it. However, the degenerative changes were further exaggerated by 60 days post-infection as the hepatocytes exhibited pronounced pyknosis, karyorhexis and karyolysis. The focal collection of lymphocytes, pyknotic nuclei and edema were more pronounced in the liver of infected catfish. Necrotic cells were also observed around the portal tract and central vein.

Study reported for the first time on the effect of isopod parasite, Cymothoa indica infestation on Oxyurichthys microlepis an ecologically important gobiid fish from Parangipettai coastal environment (South-east coast of India). The loss of weight in host fishes (male 20.47 and female 32.84%) were observed due to parasitism. The weight of uninfested female fish was found to be higher than that of infested one. The calus like thickening developed on the gill arch and gill filaments of host fish due to the persistent irritation caused by the appendages of the parasite. The reduction of gill surface area was observed due to the attachment of the parasites. The maximum reduction noticed in the first gill arch is mainly due to the heavy pressure exerted by the parasite. Details of gross lesions observed in the branchial chamber, buccal cavity and body surface was enumerated. Heavy infestations of parasitic juveniles have the potential to kill small fingerlings. The swimming capacity of the fish was also found to be affected.

Molluscicidal activity of root latex of Ferula asafetida (Umbelliferae), flower-bud of Syzygium aromaticum (Myrtaceae), and seed powder of Carum carvi (Umbelliferae) were studied in binary combination (l:1 ratio) against the snail Lymnaea acuminata and Indoplanorbls exustus. It has been observed that mortality caused by all the three combinations of spices were time and concentration dependent. Toxicity of binary combination of all the three spices was more than two times than their individual components indicating synergistic action.

The use of Trichogramma chilonis, an egg parasitoid of Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner), a polyphagous and destructive pest (Serious) pest of pulses Cereals, Vegetables was studied in relation to different temperatures at the laboratory conditions ranged between 20°C to 40°C. The developmental period and survival (longevity) was found 10,8, 8.5,5.5,05 days and60, 85,50, 30, 35% respectively. (P<0.05). The opening of vasa deferentia into ductus ejaculatorius duplex is beyond middle towards accessory glands and later are fused at tip in both the species. These attributes are of immense taxonomic significance and can be incorporated to update the species identification.

Describes the genotoxic effect of aluminium chloride on the structural organization of the polytene chromosomes of Chironomus plumosus Form B larvae, from the embryonic stage to the IV larval instar and for two successive generations F₁ and F₂. In chromosomes I, II, IIIl & IV, significant differences in chromosomal aberrations were found between exposed and control larvae. No morphological changes in the larvae were observed following exposure to aluminium but the rate of larval development decreased. The results of the investigation suggest that exposure to aluminium chloride enhances the activity of the chironomid genome and the resulting changes in the polytene chromosomes provide a subtle indicator of environmental stress.

Reveals the protective and bioenhancing role of Kamdhenu Ark (Cow's Urine Distillate) on histological alterations in thyroid of male mice affected by cadmium chloride toxicity. Single injection of CdCl₂ upto 60 days showed thyroidal hypertropy characterized by increased follicullar cell height with less amount of cytoplasmic material. CdCl₂ exposed animals treated with 100 ppm of ZnSO₄ up to 60 days showed degenerative and necrotic changes in thyroid follicles characterized by peripheral vacuolization and low lining of secreting epithelial cells with large amount of colloid suggesting hypoactive thyroidal activity. However, thyroid examined after single injection of CdCl₂ and 100 ppm of Zn + kamdhenu ark (KA) and 100 ppm of KA alone up to 60 days showed maximum recovery and normalcy of the thyroid follicles indicating that KA works as an antidote against cadmium chloride toxicity and as a bioenhancer of zinc.

Coffea arabica (Linn.) (decoction and alcoholic extract) was administered to male albino rats, orally, at dose levels of 100, 250 and 500 mg/kg. b.w./day for 30 and 60 days respectively. The decoction of C. arabica (Linn.) (500 mg/kg) was duration and dose dependent. It caused significant reduction in the wet weight of genital tissue without any change in body weight. Alcoholic extract at the same dose level for 30 and 60 days resulted in significant reduction of genital tissue wet weight. The latter was more effective than the former in this respect. Significant effects on testicular architecture, at this dose, were observed; seminal tubules were disfigured, spermatogenesis was arrested, Leydig's cells were atrophied and germinal epithelium was disorganized. Spermatozoa were completely absent. Stereocilia were scanty, seminal vesicle lumen was totally devoid of secretions. The compound 1,3,7-trimethylxanthine, found in C. arabica (Linn.), was active in inducing the antifertility effect in male albino rats.

Egg laying in untreated adults of Tribolium castaneum started on the fourth day (6.66 eggs per female) after emergence of adults. The mean total number of eggs laid per female in 20 days were 206.6 (100%). At I and 2% treatment with neem leaf powder, the egg layings were significantly lower (38.00 and 13.2% respectively). The dietary incorporation of menthol mint leaf powder also significantly reduced (79.86 and 33.97%) the mean number of eggs at I and 2% treatment respectively. T. castaneum reared at 2% treatment of tulsi leaf powder laid only 60.46% egg in 20 days.

Ethanolic (95%) extract of the whole plant of M. charantia significantly lowered blood sugar in fastcil, fed and mild diabetic male albino rats at a single oral dose of 250mg/kg that has not been reported earlier. This extract also depressed the peak value significantly in the glucose loaded model.

In April 2001, a population survey of Urial (Ovis orientalis) was conducted in the Kalabagh Game Reserve, in northwest Pakistan, to determine its suitability for sustainable use management. During the survey, 259 Urial were observed (143 females, 20 lambs, 96 males). The 96 males were classified as 30, 19, 19, and 28; Class 1. Class II, Class III, and Class IV rams, respectively. The number of lambs observed was low (7.7%) because the survey was conducted at or near the peak of lambing, when observing lambs is difficult. However, the high frequency of lambing activity we observed during the survey and proportion of Class 1 rams (male lambs of the previous year) indicates a productive population. An overall density of 13 Urial per sq. km was observed on the Reserve, but ranged from 7-23 per sq. km among sectors. Urial were abundant with good survival of lambs and yearling rams during recent years, and good survival of rams into older age classes. An initial conservative harvest quota of 5 Class IV rams could be established without negative consequences. Specific recommendations for sustainable use management are provided.
