The data of 2516 eggs from 115 dams mated to 23 sires were utilized for estimation of means and genetic parameters of egg weight, shape index and day old keet weight of guinea fowl maintained at poultry research center, Pantnagar. The average of egg weight, shape index and day old keet weight were estimated as 40.80 ± 0.056 g. 77.67 ± 0.057 percent and 27.21 ± 0.061 g. respectively. The hertiability estimates of egg weight was found to be moderate (0.344 ± 0.015) whereas the value for shape index and day old keet weight were low (0.167 ± 0.059,01.56 ± 0.056). The genetic, phenotypic and environmental correlations between egg weight and shape index were estimated as 0.436 ± 0.001, -0.017 ± 0.019 and -0.164, respectively. The corresponding correlations between egg weight and keet weight were found to be 0.147 ± 0.002, 0.047 ± 0.019 and 0.017, respectively, indicating that larger eggs would produce heavier keels.

Single dose of extract (250mg/kg body weight, orally) administered with 2% gum acacia suspension to male albino rats consisting of fasted, fed, glucose loaded and diabetic models. Significant blood sugar lowering effect was observed in all models.

Sambhaji is a major Lake of Solapur town situated in the bird sanctuary area near the Mahatma Gandhi National Zoo. It is one of the magnificent habitats in the district of Solapur. The study presents selected results of the research conducted from Jan. 1989 to Oct. 2004. Present investigations indicate a sharp decline in the visiting migratory birds including some of the local resident avian members. Due to increasing anthropogenic activities number of migrant birds show a continuous decline during the study periods of 1989 (31%) and 2004 October end (16%). Present findings indicate that the lake water is' most polluted due to high alkalinity 418 mg/l, free carbon dioxide 12.23 mg/l, hardness 212 mg/I, pH 9 and low dissolved oxygen 4.3 mg/l. There is an immediate danger for the aquatic flora and fauna of the lake. Some of the fish variety has consistently found to be reducing. Wild animals of this area have also shown sharp decline and some are not sighted these days. The total ecological habitat and vegetational cover has suffered a great loss indicating irrepairable damage to the overall ecology of the area. This (semi) natural human managed habitat has shown biotransformation over past years as evidenced by increasing anthropogenic activities.

Effect of selection for 4-week body weight on juvenile growth, packed cell volume (haematocrii) and thermoregulatory ability of birds was studied in a selected and a control line of Japanese quails. Juvenile body weights at day old, 1. 2. 4 and 6 weeks of age were higher in growth selected line compared to control line and females have higher body weights than males at all siages except at I -week of age. Relative growth rate (%) was highest for period 0-1 week. There were little differences between males and females for relative growth rate (%). Packed cell volume (PCV) was studied at four stages viz; 1, 3, 5 and 9-weeks of age Average PCV at 1, 3. 5 and 9 weeks of age was 42.5, 42.6. 42.6 and 44.7 percent, respectively. The differences between growth selected and control line were non-significant at 1, 3 and 5 weeks of age while they were significant at 9-weeks of age. Males were having higher packed cell volume as compared to females. Growth-selected and control line quails were used for recording of cloacal and surface temperatures (foot pad). The core and surface temperatures were significantly higher in the afternoon thati the morning by about 1.2 to 2.6% while the increase in the environmental temperature from morning (31 øC) to afternoon (33øC) was 2øC (6.5% increase). However, the surface to core temperature ratio, which is indicative of maintenance of warmth in extremities in relation to body temperature, declined from morning to evening by 2.4%. The genetically improved line quails had significantly lower core as well as surface temperatures than the control line.

The gills exposed to untreated effluent exhibits marked histopathological changes when compared to treated effluent.

Effect of sublethal concentration of lead acetate (0.52 mg/l) was examined on the acid and alkaline phosphatase enzyme activities of liver, intestine, muscle, and gill tissue of a freshwater fish Cyprinus carpio (Linn) exposed to 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours. The observed values indicate that lead decreased acid and alkaline phosphatase activity in all the tissues during all the period of exposures. Particularly the maximum inhibition was found in 120 hours exposure. The decrease acid phosphatase activity was due to uncoupling of phosphorylation increased glyconeogenolysis changes in the mitochondrial membrane function and a similar inhibition of alkaline phosphatase activity could be due to meet energy demand aiding anaerobic breakdown of glycogen arrest of cell secretory activity under lead stress.

One week old chicks (Japanese quail) were divided into two groups of 12 birds each. Birds of group - I were provided with normal diet (special chick ration) and served as control. Group - II were provided with normal diet mixed with L-Dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA, a precursor of dopamine) (50 mg / 15gm food). Observations were made on the egg laying, weight and size of both control as well as L-DOPA fed group of birds. Results indicate that both L-DOPA fed and control (normal diet fed) group did not start egg laying up to the two and half weeks. But at 3 weeks, L-DOPA fed quail started egg laying. In the control group first egg laying was noticed at 5 weeks. The size and weight of the eggs layed by L-DOPA fed quails were significantly higher (P<60>0.001) than those of control group. The results of the present study (i.e. egg laying, size and weight influenced by L-DOPA feeding) suggest the involvement of neurotransmitter in the regulations of reproductive mechanism of poultry birds.

Criconemella lobelia sp.n. is characterized by the presence of slightly ventrally arcuate body, lips with two annuli, strongly developed stylet, 85-92 body annules and tail lobe formation. Caloosia langolus sp.n. has a posteriorly tapering body 0.72-0.83 mm long with 243-259 annules, lip region continuous with body contour, slender spear and an elongate-conoid tail.

Macrones bleekeri is abundantly found in Sadatpur lake and it has high economic value and considerable fishery importance in the area. The length-weight relationship of M. bleekeri can be described by the equation Males: Log W = - 4.87357 + 2.86252 Log L, Females : Log W = - 4.94441 + 2.88106 Log L and combined males and females : Log W = - 4.95701 + 2.89219 Log L which indicated closely the cubic law for the isometric growth of the fish in its natural habitat. The seasonal changes taking place in Kn values was mainly related to greatly influence by cyclical changes taking place in the gonads and feeding intensity. The increased in Kn values with length from 194.5 mm were related to sexual activity. The major peak at 204.5 mm in males and 214.5 mm in females were probably due to high feeding. The mean Kn values for different months and length groups indicated good conditions of the fishes in the Sadatpur lake with scope for aquaculture.

Histopathological changes occurred in the gills and kidney of catfish, H. fossilis due to acute, sub acute and sub lethal concentration of an anionic detergent (Nirma) for acute (96h), short (15-30days) and long (45-90 days) terms. Severe damage in secondary gill lamellae (SGL) in the form of hypertrophy in the respiratory and mucus cells was observed due to exposure of fish to acute and sub acute concentrations. The separation of epithelial layer of secondary lamellae from basement membrane, wilting of pillar cells, lamellar thrombosis and curling and swelling of SGL were the common occurrence. Extensive necrosis of epithelium and fusion of adjacent lamellae on long term exposure was also noticeable. In toxication with acute and sub acute concentrations of the detergent for acute and long term exposure led to a marked shrinkage in the glomerular capsule and tuft, the renal tubules were necrosed and degenerative changes like karyorrhexis, karyolysis and piknosis of the epithelial cells were frequently encountered. Hemopoitic tissues also showed degeneration and tubular nuclei were enlarged and vascularized.

The percent composition of dicot, monocot and other groups were 46.15, 30.76 and 23.07 respectively. The Hydrilla verticilata was recorded as the most dominant aquatic species, while Azolla pinnata, Ottelia alismodes, Vallisnaria spiralis and Nymphoides cristatum were the rare species. The present water body was also observed as a good wintering habitatd for many water birds.

Eighteen species of phytoplankton were recorded. A number of phytoplankton increased in the month of January and decreased in the month of March. While ten species of zooplankton were recorded. Zooplankton showed distinct quantitative variations. A numbers of zooplankton increased in the summer months and decreased in the winter months. Different groups of zooplankton exhibited their distinct peaks in different months of the year.

Persons from fourteen different fruit and vegetable farm stations from Gadap (rural area), Karachi-Pakistan were examined for the presence of pesticide (cypermethrin, deltamethrin, polytrin-C, diazinon, monocrotophos, DDT and DDE) residues in their blood samples, and their effects on different enzymes levels (GPT, GOT, ALP, cholinesterase and gamma-glutamyltransferase) and the health of exposed persons. There is a significant increase in the enzyme levels at different timings and at different stations. Exposed persons complained about liver and kidney dysfunction and respiratory tract infection. It may be concluded that exposure of multiple pesticides for prolonged period has affected the normal functioning of different organ system and possibly produced harmful clinical effects such as hepatitis, dyspnea and burning sensation in urine.

Darkening in the body colour followe by lightening has been observed when the fishes are exposed to carpet dyeing chemical Chrome black - T. Darkening of the skin in Colisa chuna at different exposure of carpet dye has been associated to expansion of cell processes, dispersion of melanin granules in cell processes of melanophores and due to increase in the density of melanophores. Darkening in the body colour is followed by lightening due to reverse processes. Decrease in number of melanophores has been correlated due to heavy lysis in mehinophorescaused due to capacity- of melanin for binding carpet dyes. The reason for frequent periodital colour change has been associated to destruction of melanophores and their nerve supply by carpet dye absorbed through the epidermis which itself gets enormously damaged.

A population of White Leghorn selected for a period of 15 consecutive generations to improve part period (141-280 days) egg production was evaluated for response to selection. Regression analysis showed that there was an increase in the trait though not significant (1.432 ± 0.527). The magnitude of selection differential (SD). phenotypic standard deviation (5P) and intensity of selection (i) varied from 10.9 to 17.00 eggs, 10.95 to 24.52 eggs and 0.469 to 1.097, respectively over generations. The average effective number of parents (Ne) over generation were 243.837 and increase in the rate of inbreeding (ΔF) per generation was 0.21%. The cumulative inbreeding over 15 generations of selection was 3.22%. The inbreeding co-efficient would not probably have any effect on response to selection. However. the down ward trend of heritability estimate of the trait (EP140) has shown that expected response was higher in earlier generation in this population.

Synanthropic species were identified to develop synanthropic index for each species, and to correlate abundance of flies in relation to human habit, habitation, and sanitation. Flies of Calliphoridae, Parasarcophagidae, and Muscidae were trapped from 12 localities in Midnapore, Hooghly, and North-24-Parganas districts in the state of West Bengal (India). Altogether 23 species of flies from 14 genera were identified from these localities. Maximum number of species in a genus was five (Sarcophaga and Musca) followed by two under Lucilia and Chrysomya. None of 12 species of Muscidae was common in all the studied localities. Six out of 23 species were found in one study,locality. Synanthropic index (SI) of females of most of the species was higher than those of the males in most of the seasons. Results showed that SI was the highest for M. domestica in all the four groups followed by Chrysomya megacephala) and Musca sorbens. Variation in SI of species in different districts reflected the habit and culture in the local human settlements. All of the sarcophagid flies trapped during the present investigation were negatively synanthropic. Members of Sarcophaga were less important in terms of disease transmission. Results categorically point the preferred habitats of these carrion flies, and would help in assessing the sanitation and habitat status of human settlements.

Sheep of Garhwal (India) were infested by three species of phthirapteran ectoparasites (i.e.- Bovicola ovis,Linognathus ovillus and L. pedalis). B. ovis were found on all body region covered with hair or wool. The most preferred site was top line (back) and sides. Eggs of B. ovis were laid close to skin in line onto wool fiber of back and sides. Eggs were also readily found where lice were present. L. ovillus prefers to live principally on hair covered part particularly face But heavily and very heavily infested sheep have louse on all regions except the extremities (i.e. lower parts of limb). The eggs and lice were found scattered on head. L. pedatis were found in the foot, legs and scrotum. They were occasionally found on belly (abdomen). The other body regions were not favourable for this louse. The eggs were laid in clusters onto the hairs of foot and legs at close to skin.

Roslerstamm, mysisalis Walker, sabinusalis Walker have been transferred, described and illustrated under this genus. The external male and female genitalic structures of these species have been described and illustrated for the first time. A key to the known Indian species of genus Patania Moore has been formulated. A new species P. menoni is reported and described in detail.

Protozoan parasites often cause passive and chronic infections in shrimp population. In this study we investigated the incidence of protozoan parasites infecting commercially important Penaeus indicus, P. monodon, P. semisulcatus, Macrobrachium rosenbergii and M. malcomsonii collected from Gosthani and Gambeeragedda estuaries, mangrove water ways of Kakinada Bay and, a hatchery, along the northeast coast of Andhra Pradesh, India. Altogether incidence of 20 protozoan species represented by sarcomastigophorans including, Amyloodinium ocellatum, Isochrysis galbana, Paramoeba perniciosa, P. aesturina and Rosculus macrobrachii,' apicomplexans including Caridohabitans macrobrachii, Cephalolobus andhrae, Didymophyes penaei, Montonella macrobrachii and Solenococcidium indicus; microsporidian Agamosoma duorara and; ciliates including Acineta tubetosa, A. lacustris, Chilodonella longypharynx, Actinochona gaucha, Zoothamnium adamsi, Z. arbuscula, Epistylis niagarae, Gymnodinoides caridinae and Bursaria truncatella were observed. Also, studies on the host type and locality, pathogen morphology, site and prevalence of infection, symptoms and pathogenicity and special features, if any, were made. Overall, the protozoans occur both as endosymbionts and epibionts and often culminated in chronic or acute and extensive damage to shrimp production. Species like, Amyloodinium ocellatum, Paramoeba perniciosa, P. aesturina, Caridohabitans macrobrachii, Didymophyes penaei, Agamosoma (=Thelohania) duorara were found to inflict moderate to intense tissue reactions.

The giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii was injected with an inoculum containing LD₅₀ 96 hr dose of 10⁷ Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC 1688) to determine the histopathological effects in vivo. The comparison of tissues of both the control and the bacterial endotoxin treated prawns after 96 hr revealed significant degenerative changes in treated prawns. Both light microscopic and electron microscopic observations revealed the infiltration of the tissues of Pseudomonas sp in the muscular and hepatopancreatic tissues of prawn. The muscular tissue changes in the myofibrillar arrangement with blockage at the gap junctions and necrotic lesions were observed. The hepatopancreatic cells were vacuolated with hypertrophied nucleus. Atrophy of hepatopancreatic tubules was conspicuous. The pathogenicity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is attributed to its infiltration and multiplication inside the tissues and the consequent release of extra-cellular enzymes for its metabolism. The degeneration of host tissues is also attributed to the latter.

Deals with the deleterious changes at ultrastructural level of the epithelial cells of gills of Cyprinus carpio communis Linn, upon exposure to 1/10th of LC₅₀ of monocrotophos which is considered to be insignificant concentration from lexicological point of view. The gills of the fish are the primary corridor for molecular exchange between the internal milieu of a fish and its environment. Gills perform numerous functions such as oxygen uptake and C0₂ excretion, osmoregulation, acid-basic balance, excretion of nitrogenous compounds and taste. Hazardous chemicals present in water may alter the morphology of the epithelial cells of gills of the fish, which may affect the process of diffusion of gases and ultimately the overall health of the fish. To prove this fact Cyprinus carpio communis Linn, was kept in water for 30 days having low concentration of 0.038 ppm (110th of LC₅₀) of monocrotophos and an attempt was made to study the different types of degenerations produced in the epithelial cells of gills as compared to the normal epithelial cells of gills of this culturable fish using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) technique. The ultrastructural changes due to the toxic exposure at finer scale were thinning of microridges, uplifiment of epithelial cells, development of hyperplasia, decrease in the density of mucous cells which are considered to be the first line of defence and total dystrophy of epithelial tissue. Thus, it is opined that a low concentration of monocrotophos has the potential to bring different type of degenerations at finer scale hence affecting the fish's health drastically and altering the fitness of the fish in water even having insignificant amount of this toxicant in the ambient water.

Oral administration of ethanolic (95%) extract Cassia alata flowers daily at 500 mg /kg .b. wt. dose for a period of 60 'days caused a significant decline in the relative weights of testes and accessory sex organs. A marked decrease in epididymal sperm count and motility and fertility was also recorded. Quantitative study on spermatogenic cells revealed a significant depletion in the numbers of perleptotene and mid pachytene spermatocytes, round and elongated spermatids, reduced (p<60>0.001) seminiferous tubular and Leydig cells nucleus diameters were also recorded. Significant reduction of protein and sialic acid contents in genital organs and fructose content in seminal vesicle were noticed after extract treatment. However, the cholesterol level in testis increased significantly. No alteration were recorded in any hematological parameters. Thus the results suggest impairment of reproductive function in C.alata extract treated rat which appears to be mediated through antispermatogenic and antiandrogenic effect of the plant extract.

The collected parasite on closer observation, were turned out to be the genus Ganges/a sp¹⁴. and Proteocephalus sp⁵. The Gangesia Sp¹⁶. occurred in Aurangabad and Proteocephalus sp. in Osmanabad. and values for percentage of incidence, intensity, density and index of infection were seen throughout the study period and seasonal variation were also studied for all above parameters. The values were high in rainy, moderate in winter and low in summer season for Ganges/a sp. at Aurangabad district. From Osmanabad district the values were high during summer season, moderate in rainy season and lowest in winter season for the Proteocephalus sp.

Demographic responses of Ceriodaphnia dubia exposed to copper at 3 different levels (0.1,0.2 and 0.4 mgI^-1) and at 4 exposure periods (3, 6,12 and 24 hr) in addition to controls (without the heavy metal). The tested levels of Cu concentration and the chosen periods of exposure affected some demographic variables (average lifespan, gross and net reproductive rates and generation time). Depending on the heavy metal concentration and the period of exposure, the average lifespan of C. dubia varied from 18 to 24 day. Net reproductive rates (NRR) ranged from 50 to 80 offspring per female per lifespan. while the rate of population increase (r) varied from 0.30 to 0.34 per day. Though gross reproductive rates (especially at low and intermediate copper levels and shorter duration of exposure) showed significantly higher values than controls, both NRR and r were either unaffected or decreased. It is therefore necessary to regulate the release of untreated industrial effluents containing copper into freshwater ecosystems. This study thus highlights the importance of including, not only toxicant concentrations but also exposure time, in ecotoxicological evaluations.

The microzoobenthos constitutes 42.9% Oligochaeta, 30.7% Insecta 5.9% Gastropoda, 5.4% Hirudina, 3.1 % Crustacea and 1.9% Miscellaneous organisms. The oligochaetes dominated among the benthos species.

The study was conducted on a sample size of 233 fertile eggs of IC-3. medium body size broiler populations aged between 32 to 35 weeks, obtained through natural mating with the purpose of improving efficiency of 'Double Window EY-V/VO Chick Embryo Culture System at Phase II and III. Consequently, 134 eggs from the same strain were used as control. Out of 233 eggs set. 97 chicks were hatched out and out of 134 control eggs, 112 chicks came out on 22nd day. Hatching observations were done in both the groups. Hatching observation with respect to yolk sac. allantoic fluid, urates, beak, orientation of embryo, feet-leg visibility, membrane penetration, breathing and activity of embrxos in ex-vivo embryo culture system were recorded. The observations were studied in terms of Pipped (pipped but could not hatch), Hatched (total number of hatch out) and Navel (connected/detached) in control group. The results concluded that for successful hatching of embryos in culture system, the orientation of embryos should be on left position, visibility of right feet/legs, horizontal position of beak, chorioallantoic membrane and yolk sac are becoming attached, climax activity and dry allantoic fluid. These optimum conditions with relation of position of embryo irf'embryo culture system should be maximized through suitable modifications in the procedure for healthy hatching.

In order to record the effects of sublethal heroin administration on plasma calcium (Ca) and inorganic phosphate (Pi) metabolism, the drug was administered intramuscularly (16.4 mg/kg body weight/day; 0.75 LD₅₀ dose; intramuscular) in Rattus norvegicus for 30 days. Plasma Ca level of control rats ranged between 9.53±0.32-9.88±0.22 mg/100 ml while the average Pi concentration, fluctuated between 4.55±0.18-4.71±0.24 mg/100 ml. Sublethal heroin administration in rat elicited a progressive increase in plasma Ca level during the first seven days, thereafter the level registered a significant decline (P<60>0.001) by day 30. However, plasma Pi level of the heroin-treated rats registered a progressive increase with the peak value (P<60>0.001) on day 30. Sublethal heroin administration for 30 days induced degenerative changes the parathyroid gland which was evident by the cytoplamic vacuolization, presence of more pycnotic nuclei and occurrence of patchy areas among the chief cells.

The mean performance of pure lines and per cent heterosis for production traits in reciprocal crosses between two lines (IWH & IWI) of White Leghorn undergoing reciprocal recurrent selection for part period egg production up to 280 days of age were studied over six consecutive generations. The crosses were, in general, superior to their mid-parent values over the generations for egg production. 20 and 40 week body weights, but inferior for egg weight and age at sexual maturity. The average heterosis for egg production to 280 days of age, egg weight, age at sexual maturity, 20 and 40 week body weight varied from 1.24 to 19.00%. -4.85 to 6.11%, -6.01 to 0.13%, -0.26 to 9.38% and -8.47 to 12.01%, respectively over the generations. The reciprocal crosses differed in performance for all the traits suggesting the existence of maternal / sex-linked effects. The superiority of HI cross over respective 1H crosses consistently across the generations suggested the use of IWH as sire and IWI as dam line for the production of a commercial layer strain.

Various histochemical methods reveal that the epithelial cells in surface layer of epidermis of Xenentodon cancila are keratinized. Presence of very few flattened mucous cells in the epidermis of this fish shows an inverse relationship between degree of keratinization and the density of slime secreting glands. The cells of superficial keratinized layer contain cystine (-S-S-) groups, Cysteine (-SH) groups and bound calcium. Lateral cell membranes of mature keratinized cells are fused, forming a continuous sheet, which acts as barrier between internal environment and surrounding media. The keratinized epidermal surface protects the fish from abrasion during swimming and from desiccation when it glides in the air.

Evaluate the toxic effects of an azodye direct deep black on the blood cells count of albino rat. The observations recorded during experimentation yielded in significant decrease in the red blood corpuscle count (RBC count) in the blood of albino rat when exposed to direct deep black. It was found to be maximum for both the lower and higher doses of toxicant in test animals when exposed to 15 days, 30 days, 45 days and 60 days. As compared to RBC count, the total leucocytes count (TLC) represented significant increase in number in the blood of test animals under the stress of both the doses of direct deep black. The well pronounced elevation was recorded after 60 days exposure of both the doses of direct deep black Significant variations have been observed in DLC.
